Those old boxes are valuable because almost everybody threw them away. Since most of the Lionel sold in the past 30 years went to adults who were likely to save boxes, it's likely that boxes will be needed to sell an item at all. Stuff without boxes will command very low prices.

High premiums for boxes is not specific to toy trains. Any collectable toy is worth considerably more in the original box. Just watch the antique road show some time.

I'm sure that the person who paid $5100 doesn't feel ripped off, like a sucker, or anything of the like, so far be it from me to make fun of him/her for doing so.

Many of you who are judging the buyer are woefully ignorant of the collector market-I admit to being ignorant of the specifics, but I can certainly understand why a collector would pay such high prices for an exceptionally rare(less than 200 made) set.

ROFL...IF ONLY I had two dozen S2 turbines!!! Laugh [(-D] I'm still on the hunt for the 3rd Rail version. Even with all the turbines I have and will have, they don't and won't come near $5000 samolies. The key difference is I can put my turbines on the track and RUN them. I have yet to see a cardboard box run around the track. And let's clarify...the guy didn't buy a SET. Or even the individual boxes each car was packed in. He bought a cardboard box that the entire set came in. What's next for sale at a ridiculous price...the gloves of the Sears delivery driver who brought the set in from the truck? The mud on the shoes the Sears delivery truck driver wore that day it arrived at the showroom? The Kleenex the Sears salesman used to wipe the box off with before opening it?

Hmmmm...actually, I'm giving myself and everyone else some great E-bay ideas. I may just put that stuff up for sale. Never know what kind of stuff a "collector" would "invest" in!!!  Thumbs Up [tup]

Jim: I MAY be able to get you an UNFOLDED U-Haul box for a super good price. These are VERY rare and I think only 5 billion of them are known to exist. Let me know if you're interested. Thumbs Up [tup]

Buckeye Riveter: Sounds like a great plan!!! Be sure to take pictures of the kids excited faces as you unveil each rare box. Thumbs Up [tup] Laugh [(-D]

yallaen: I am not a big fan of PayPal. But the alternative of NO protection is even worse. Once you send a money order or check and it gets cashed, you are at the mercy of the seller. At least with PayPal, I can dispute the sale with PayPal or VISA and get my money back. I have had ONE dispute that I used PayPal for and it worked quite well.
The box on E-Bay...I'm really thinking about it. All I need to do is get a magic marker and write "Lieonell" on the side and say it previously contained a 773 loco. What worries me is people will actually BID on it!!!!Shock [:O]

As to USPS and UPS...in my area USPS ranks lower than McDonalds employees as far as their job performance is concerned.

I use Paypal exclusively, however, something came to light the other day. I noticed one other engine I was going to bid on. However, the seller REFUSED to take paypal. He stated he had been burned too many times by Paypal, and politely suggested I look at www.paypalsucks.com

I read the forum postings, etc. on the site. I'm sure there have been a couple instances where sellers have been burned. BUT, that's the risk of running a business. I'd rather know I have the option of Paypal on my side. As a side note with paypal..I've read their TOS. If you have ANY problem with a paypal seller/buyer, immediately notify paypal/ebay. One of the posters stated that a buyer wanted to return an item he bought, saying it wasn't what he wanted. The seller agreed; the box was sent back empty after the money was credited back to the account. Ok, call the police! That's a criminal act. And the seller was whining because Paypal wouldn't do anything because after a month or so, no police report had been made.

 Just FYI type stuff...

Oh, BTW, did you REALLY put a Uhaul box on Ebay? I think it would be hilarious!

I have decided that for this year's neighborhood Christmas Party that instead of inviting all the kids to run the trains, I am going to just set up a display of empty boxes for them to look at.   I will explain to them that this box is worth $1.00 and this box is worth $2.00.  This should be the best Christmas Party ever.  Whistling [:-^]

Hi all!

Been a while...kinda busy at work and such. I agree, there are some on Ebay that are smoking crack. But there are deals to be had! I won this engine, which I think I did pretty good:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130113460880&rd=1&rd=1

Now I'm only having a "slight" problem with the seller...I asked him 2 minutes after winning if he would ship it via UPS instead of USPS as advertised. After 3 unanswered emails, Tuesday morning I called him. He agreed to UPS, and said he was busy, hadn't checked his email, and would get to it later in the day.

Another email left unanswered Wednesday..with no replies...

Another call Thursday, and his reply was "I work 17 hours, I don't have the time, but I'll get there today or Friday morning. Look, I like to ship USPS because it's right next to my shop, but if you give me some time, I'll do UPS for ya".

Here it is, Friday. Nada yet. I'm tempted to just go with USPS, but I HATE their tracking system.

The pictures suck and make it impossible to tell what you are getting. Lionel 700E's came with outside third rail shoes that you swapped out the center roller with. In decent condition they are worth at least $2,500. As someone else posted, the freight cars are not worth a lot. If they are nice build ups they are worth around $40 to $50 each.

It seems like every train item that seller lists is like that. He is listing an 8010 in an "original box" that has the model number and roadname rubbed out. I don't think the engine ever came in that style box.

I think the guy is listing the mini-history to try to appear like he is credible. So less informed people will assume the list must be accurate.

I see listings with what appear to be inaccurate or misleading claims on a daily basis.
