John, Funny you should ask... the best I have found I got at the Green Dragon... now if you know what it is and where it is... I don't even know if it is available any longer... I bought a large container from a fellow there about 5 years ago, still have 1/2 a container left... has 'Spice It' on the label... Wink [;)]

Yes I do know what & where it is, but I haven't been there for a long time, probably 25-30 years.

Is it still around?  Last I heard it was only open on Friday night (makes it kind of hard to get there from Baltimore and still have time to wonder around).  I hadn't been there in over 15 years before I went 5 years ago and I remembered it being a heck of alot bigger...

Jim, I hope you get that tomato, been following the 'tomato' saga for a while with baited breath. Whistling [:-^]  I have gotten quite a few, but I cheat and start some early in the greenhouse so that they have tomatos hanging on when I plant them outside.

The recipe below is one we really like.  We use it on chicken pieces cooked slow over charcoal. Mop with sauce and turn until done. We have also used it on boneless skinless chicken *** as a marinade and  sauce for mopping.  We have also used in on pork loin and chops.

1 cup vegetable oil

1 cup cider vinegar 

1/2 cup water

2 tablespoons salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 

1 and 1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning

1/4 tsp paprika 

1 egg

4 teaspoons Tabasco sauce  (or more according to your taste)

Mix dry ingredients and then add liquids and blend 

 

Another alternative is:

1 cup mayonaise
1 cup cider vinegar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne

Wish you Yanks would stop trying to do bar-be-que.  You all think the grill is called a bar-be-que.  Bar-be-que is PORK.  The best is EASTERN NC BAR-BE-QUE.   OH, black pepper will heat it up more than red as it sticks to the meat.

Morning All,

JeffElectric-Yes, Grandma's cooking was special.  Certain things remind me of her.  The smell of bleach, (it was used to clean everything), women wearing aprons and hearing "Amazing Grace".  Simpler times.   Very strict but you never doubted that she loved you.  I am trying to use that model with my own grandkids.

Anybody have some reccomendations of things to see in Huston Tx?  Bride and I are travelling down the middle of August for a meeting and going to extend our stay a few days.

We moved away from the rest of our family for Dad's job, early on.  But we still visited a few times a year, especially Christmas and Thanksgiving....MMMmmm Pierogis.

Grandma always had a fresh batch of apple slices ready for us.  Apple pie in a sheet pan.  Mom always tried to get her recipe right...but always said 'Mom's is better.'....Recipe said shortening...  Found out later Grandma used lard in her dough.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a sunny 65 degrees. Going up to 85, today, with a chance of rain this afternoon.

Today is a relaxing day. I was busy, running errands, most of yesterday. Got all the shopping done for the week. Gas prices were about 30 cents cheaper in Cambridge, compared to Caldwell. Best price was $2.84 a gallon. Highest I saw $3.19. That's a big difference. It looks like we will have to live with this. Hard to do any traveling.

I may run trains, later. Need to  spend some quality time in the train room.  Plenty of work to do.

Here comes the Dining Car. Wonder if " points west " has boarded yet? It is time for breakfast. Be back later.

Good morning all,

It is raining in SE Indiana with temps in the 80s today.  I practiced soccer with the high school kids last night.  Only had seven guys and five gals show up.  These kids think they can just show the first day of "official" practice and win games against teams who work all year round....right.  One of these days they will realize what it takes to win.  For once, when I got home, I stayed off the computer and went upstairs to run the 8E and the 10E.  The pendulum reverse unit on the 8E is getting a little balky, but I just use it for the passenger set anyway and do not switch much with it.  The 10E is my workhorse.  I slept "hard" last night and woke up feeling pretty wide-awake for once. 

All this talk of grits and barbecue brings up some Hoosier delicacies.  My wife fixes a mean pork cutlet that is breaded, served up with mashed "taters" and a nice Romaine lettuce salad and you are talking a slice of heaven.  I'll try to get the recipe from her.  Last day for cinnamon rolls on the dining car as it heads to "Points East".  I hope everyone has a good day.

  58 and nice this morning did a slow 6 miler.  Seemed to be only jogger out there saw 4 walkers.  Slow day for all the regulars on my route.

  I see we have another Coffee pot going.  What is this regular and the other decafe?  I'm staying regular, hot and black.  Sorry GRAYSON.

  Got my notice from TRAINZ, that my NYC FT AA are shipping today.

CHIEF,  we do know its grillin not BBQ but they don't sell or make grillin sauce.

I guess grayson doesn't understand it's the grits that "holds" everyone together. I will probably check on  the trains this morning, got a sherwin-williams sign to install somewhere on my Hard Rock building. maybe the roof.  I'll drop by later        Sir James

Sorry no photos. I one finger an HP laptop thats all I have and it still knows a lot more than me.Until Jan.06 I never touched a computer in my life. I did not buy it there, but a store on ebay sells them and you can see it work in one sequence. there are a total of 41.

My secret to a good grilling sauce is 'chocolate'! No, really, try it. Add a couple of tablespoons of cocoa powder to your usual or favorite mix and see what a difference it makes.

You know I've tried steaks coated (one side) with really good cocoa powder, and it was very good.  I've also had one coated with espresso powder...same result.

Been holdin off doing this post, wanted it too be somehing worthy, significant, enlightening, intelligent, and generally worth while.  (Since it is my 1,000th.)  But I don't think that would ever happen.  Probably would never post again if I were to wait to achieve all that. 

I did think I should come up with a new Avatar, being from CA and all, thought a avatar that was more geographical would be appropriate.  Hence, the surfboard.  Actually, this was taken in '64, at Carpenteria Ca.  The other guy was my best friend at the time, we met in the 7th grade.  He still lives in the area, and I had him over just two weeks ago and he brought this picture.  I had never seen it before, or don't remember it.  (I'm on the left, the good looking guy.)

All these recipes sound good, (well  not sure about the cocoa ?). May just try some of them.

Family got back last night.  They had a good time but was glad to be home!  They brought me a Redwood Train, I don't know what scale it would be, maybe On3.  But has steam engine (no tender) 2 log cars, (fitting), box car with a window(?), and caboose all made from redwood.  Its fine, I like it.  Now to find a place for it?

Edit - I did a edit of the photo, took the other guy out of the pic.  Didn't want to confuse everyone. 

Didn't have great news for Kay (wife) when she got home, the washer and dryer don't work !  The washers dampers are worn out, and the dryer has a burned out coil (1of3).  Both of them are about 26 yrs old, not worth repairing, so we will have to go out and get new ones.

HOPEFULLY WE MAY SEE SOMETHING FROM DOUG TODAY!  I believe he had a Dr appt, and maybe he can look at the computer for a brief time.  Hope he doesn't try to read all the history of the last week.

Off to work, hope everyone has a great day!  Will definetely be glad when all the immaturity that is abounding settles down.

Morning all.  Been cleaning kitchen floor.  Warning: Labs shed!!!! Disapprove [V]  Peks, you send to groomer and clip close so they don't. Thumbs Up [tup]  Labs are smarter and behave better than Peks [Peks are very stubborn]. Thumbs Up [tup]

Got to get back to painting the soundboard.  MAN, that stuff soaks up the paint!!!  Got to water.  The rain has not come as forecast.

Houston, the most watched thing is mosquitoes!! Laugh [(-D]  Got west on I10 and go to Katy [sub of Houston].  Town has restored depot and then go to Town's area of restoration.  Lots of history in Katy [the Katy RR].  There is a Bass Pro Shops there and I got to visit last year.

As you can see, waterfowl hunting is still big there.  Big rice farms [lots being sold as commercial and residential].  Big grain elevators clsoed.  Guess it is cheaper to import rice.  Tracks to Houston have been cut into and a new road crosses where they use to be.  Years ago during waterfowl season, a train use to run from Katy to Houston each day taking waterfowl.  Also, Hubble Oil Co was in Houston and furnished all the avation fuel for the alies during WWII.

Got to go.  Have a good one.

PS: forgot, chocolate!!!!  Will try that.  Have smeared mustard on steaks before cooking.  Pretty good.  I am a chocoholic!!!  Will strat putting it on everything!!!!

Now for some train news.  This is an email I received from a friend in the industry.  Nothing secret, so I am including it in this post.

Subject: Bad News Re: PRR K-4s #1361

It's probably apropos that this news would come on Friday the 13th: the K4s
#1361 restoration project is reportedly dead.

According to a very reliable source, as of next Friday (July 20) the project is shut down and all paid people will be laid off.  Two factors have been mentioned:

1)  Funding has been cut off and bills have not been paid, and

2)
According to an engineering report, the firebox doesn't conform to specifications.  Reportedly, the parts will be placed in secure storage.  There is now an almost-new tender, nearly complete, with no engine to pull it...

If you are not aware of it, this is the K-4 that was on display for many years at the horseshoe curve, until it was removed, about 10 years ago, to be restored.  Unfortunatly the restoration has been rather mismanaged (my opinion) and has now been stopped.

I have had my Lionel FT A-B-B units for several years.  Never a problem.  Would like to install cruise control in the future from TAS.   I need to keep the wheels very clean to pull the dummy B, dummy A, and seven more passenger cars upgrade.  I think you will like them.

Chief, you are not going to make me post on Grayson's Caboose, are you?  I haven't beat you up about Grits, Sweet Tea, Hound Dogs, Junk Cars or going barefoot for a long time and that is why you should let me stay at the Coffee Pot for another week or two.  Whistling [:-^]

JOHN is this the K4 being restored up in STEAMTOWN?  Saw it 2 years ago, was in real bad shape,both the engine and tender.  What a shame.

Checkin' the Pot during lunch.  Need to work some crazy hours between now and Friday to go over some things with all the shifts, Disapprove [V]  Oh well, it does pay the bills!

Looking forward to the arrival of the Polar Express.  I wonder why they were being sold so cheap?  Maybe returns?  Would the warranty still be in place if it is a return or a refurb?

My wife adds cocoa and cinnamon to her chilli; make huge difference.  Add ostyer crackers and cheddar cheese Yum!  For a special treat, add coneys for a 4 way!
