Jim - sounds like a nice project (bookcase).  Did you get the plans from a magazine?  What kind of wood did you use?

Jim,
I figured it was a LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG shot, but one I was willing to take!  The Williams engines are quite inexpensive so that is why I'm leaning that dirrection and just stripping the shell and repainting it.

Brent

Brent, I would guess that the problem is that none come over from China in undecorated.  The market would be very small.

0930GMT here in a very windy Stockport 80MPH gusts forecast and a lot of rain some local roads are closed by floods, chance of snow tomorrow.

Got myself a humdinger of a cold, Vet says "take plenty liquids and keep warm", so it's pints of hot strong tea cooled down with a good measure of Scotlands finest and the 'stat turned up to 24deg.

I read somewhere that Lionel are/have equipped some of their loco's with magnets to aid adhesion-bad news; Hornby tried it about 20 yrs ago (they called it magnadhesion), I only bought one so equipped a 'Lord of the Isles' 4-2-2  as my track was NS the engine could barely propel itself, but much worse the magnet found vast quantities of iron filings on the track; yes you would be amazed at how much metal we have in our homes. Just try running a good magnet across the carpet, it's everywhere!

Close on a ton of posts since my last, this looks like being one of the biggest ever. Hadn't noticed the ad's until some one mentioned them. TV ad's are worse because they crank the volume up, I tend to record commercial programmes and then zapp the ad's during playback.

Good morning, everyone.

At 14 degrees, it's twice as warm as it was yesterday at this time. I hate winter!

John, take care of that cold before it turns to something worse! Keep yourself well lubricated!

My wife's sister came over last night and bought pizza for everyone. That was a nice surprise. Then all the kids fell asleep early (another very nice surprise) and I got to run trains for a while by myself.

Not much else going on. I'm going to build some shelves this weekend to store trains on. Got to head to Home Depot for some materials.

Have a great day, all.

Jim,

Thanks for you commiserations I am taking the medication liberally I shall soon be as well as a newt. Lost my voice, my dear lady is now able to get all the last words in.

Sorry to hear of your health relapse chief.

Are you talking degrees F or C? We are on Celsius with zero being 32 F, it's now 12C, I think we are now getting the severe weather that hit your eastern seaboard a few days ago. I live under the airport glide path and I find it a bit unnerving to see an aircraft flying like a crab, glad I'm not on it!

Can't wait for USPS to deliver my train set.

Have a nice day all.

Going to be a cold, frigid next 5 days in ol' Bal'more!

Supposed to get a quick rain/snow mix tonight - no accumulation, but could make the morning commute tomorrow very interesting!

Still nothing from either CharlesRo or TAS... this is strange.

Calling them both today to see what is up...

The whobbling engine still has me perplexed and concerned...

John, That is what I was thinking, they sell undecorated deisels so I was hoping I could talk em into an undecorated GG-1... maybe they never thought there was a market for them?

I would actually like to find a few undecorated engines: Torpedo, GG-1, K-4, and something along the F3, F7, E? style deisels... I have a few custom trains that I want to build and I have this itch to do something different... Big Smile [:D]

I am definitely going to rebuild or redecorate 2 GG-1s, one in the B&O and one in the C&O paint schemes I posted earlier.  I also would like to find some passenger cars to redecorate to match the GG-1s, or passenger cars to use with the engines and not have to repaint them...

John,  it's 14F degrees here in New England. Time to break out the sweaters!

Lion, I believe Atlas is coming out with an undecorated F3 this year.

Laz, your layout is coming along great!

Good evening all,

It is warmer but cloudier in SE Indiana with temps heading to the low 40s today.  My wife had my dad over for supper last night so there was no time to run trains.  Brwebster, that is one fine looking Corvair in the picture.  Those were good cars.  I wonder if GM will ever get it right again.  The Solistice by Pontiac does come close.  I had a 1973 Opel Manta that was really sweet.  All  I did last night was run Lucas around and go the Y.  I guess "Points West" better head east with the dining car.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It's a cloudy 26 degrees. Going up to 45 today, withmaybe some sunshine. That would be nice. No snow on the ground.

Today, I am going to do a few things around here. I will probably go to the lumber yard and pick up some wood for the layout, tomorrow. I think I have a good idea how I will build the bridge supports. I will have to cut some track with the Dremel tool. Much faster than a hack saw.

Well, I hear the whistle, Dining Car has arrived. Breakfast is served.

Y'all have a great Thursday.

Jon Bakeer - I guess you'll need to visit the local pub(s) to get some meds. for that cold.  Hope it doesn't hang on too long.

Lionel had "Magnetraction" on their engines for a number of years and its been relatively recently that they've been using traction tires.  The tires are cheaper to manufacture.  The magnetic force was not all that great but it did help with traction.  And yes you did need to make sure no iron scraps were on the track.

Good morning from Greensboro--27 degrees. Snowing hard here this morning but ground and roads are warm---not expected to be much of an accumulation. However, prediction is that it will turn to freezing rain by noon and rain in late afternoon as it warms up.

Can't blame this storm on the Yankees---it came up from the south.

They think anything white in color and soggy is grits, and since the texture is kind of sandy, they think grits can be used for traction... So if it is white, looks like grits, then go faster cause you got lots o' traction!  WHOOOPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BOOM, SLAM, CRASH, SCREECH, CRUNCH, BANG...

Mornin' boys.  Day 2 of the "mini" vacation.  Six year old is going stir crazy.  Wants to go out on her swings (temp in the teens)!

Bakeer - Mornin' English.  Guess you will find out how good your roof slates are, eh?  Not sick here, but I'll have a swig to ya.

88 - manufacturers will tell you they don't put out undecorated shells for "quality control" reasons.  When they learned (ATLAS) that they could command the same price for an undecorated engine as a painted one, they started releaseing them.

Jim, That's minus 10 of our degrees, we would describe that as exceptional. Average January temperatures here in jolly Stockport +2 night and +7 day 36 and 45 of yours.

Good morning,

John, Take care of that cold. It does sound like you are on the right track with your treatment. Wink [;)]

Brent, Jim beat me to it but yes Atlas is going to make an undecorated F-3, choice of one or two headlights. Delivery is July. And then there is the cost. $409 at AM Hobbies for a powered unit and 175 for unpowered. List is 479 & 199. They make great stuff, but it is not inexpensive. The three unit Railking I bought yesterday cost less than that A unit.

Weather here this morning is clear and cold. 23 on the back porch, 36 in the pond and 64 in the greenhouse. Finished ordering my seeds on line yesterday. Will start some things about the first of February.

An elderly gentlemen with dementia in a nearby town wondered out yesterday and froze to death

Picked up a Railking FA2 A-B-A at the LHS yesterday, haven't run it a home yet. It ran fine at the shop. Need to decide what to take off to put it on the layout.

This is work out morning at the fitness center, going to take it easy today. Been having shoulder and back pain. Thought it might be the old ticker, but Doc says no. Did xray's of back and shoulder's. Now says it is Arthritis and to take Tylenol. That is what I was doing before I got his professional opinion. Big Smile [:D]

May get some catenary installed this afternoon, but this is the evening that I do dinner for the bride so not a lot of time left.

Enjoy your trains and keep warm.

Brent, I have seen parts dealers at train shows selling unpainted shells for several type of engines.  I don't specifically remember seeing a GG-1 shell, but again I wasn't looking that hard at all the parts.

Cold in Columbus.  WHTITE DEATH is on the way according to our ace TV weather-babe in the short skirt and low cut blouse.  A 1/2" of snow is predicted.  Of course, the hype always exceeds the actual, but John in NE OHIO is supposed to get 10" of snow.  Way to go, John!!!

Chuck, the real question is:  Where's the Chief?

Looking forward to the train show this weekend.  If I can find an Acela for $100 it would make my day!  I guess that would make anyone's day.

See ya down the tracks,

10 inches?!! Somewhere a weather babe is smiling! We are expecting 2 inches of White Death overnight. That's 2 inches more than I'd like.

The Chief is in Greenville, NC, holed up in some hotel waiting for his breakfast. I just spoke with him an hour ago. Said everything there is covered in ice. Some 80 cars off the road in the Raleigh area. His wife stayed home from work because of the conditions. Most likely, she is playing with Chiefie's trains as we speak. I hear she likes to run 'em white knuckle fast!

Jim,

The bookcase was originally a Christmas present for the Grand kids, that grew into a bookcase for each one (3 grandkids), my youngest daughter liked them so well she asked for one which is the one I'm finishing now.

It is made from 3/4 red oak plywood, with solid oak facing.  I planned it to get the most bookcase from a 4x8 with minimum waste.

Here is a picture of one of them.  It looks like the girls will use the bookcase for oriental sleeping berths.

Last day off till I start dayshift.  Going to miss the trainshow in Columbus.  When you guys see American Flyer stuff, think of me.  Maybe a good thing I'm not going, train budget a little low.

Good morning from snowy/icy central North Carolina.  Woke up to sleet, freezing rain, and snow this morning.  But it's only a light dusting.  I'd much prefer a foot or two of snow.

Sorry I haven't been participating on the forum recently.  With kids and work, I haven't had time for any of my hobbies.

Good morning from a cold Crystal Lake where it is 30 and feels like 14. I got to work on the layout a bit last night - cutting down some droopy backdrops - dealing with cat damage - the bride and I need to talk about the cats... I unhooked this DC trainset transformer I was using to power everything on Mt Seaman - it's getting too hot. I also moved Apitz Forest to a better place.

John,
Thanks for the heads up... I've seen a couple A-B-A Railkings at the LHS and they are nice... problem is I've got all Lionel and am not sure I want to invest in DCS as well... One thing I have not been able to confirm is if you can control both PS-2 and TMCC engines from the DCS remote and still have access to all the TMCC commands and the PS-2 commands?  If that is possible then I may go with DCS as well... I just don't want to have to walk around with two remotes to control all the engines...

I've been thinking of using the FasTrack on only the Christmas layout and going with the Gargraves/ROSS switches for the big layout.  I just like the look of the Gargraves trackage... one question though... can you control other manufacturer Switches with TMCC or DCS?

I'm beginning to think that book by Neil on Command Control may have been a wise purchase last Sunday at the show...

BTW - John, how far are you from the Holiday Inn Express?  I stayed there a few years ago during a trip to Hershey Park... now I have their song from Chocolate World in my head! Disapprove [V]

lionelroar88,

You can control PS2 and TMCC locos from the DCS remote, but you need a cable to connect the TMCC command base to the TIU.  I have both TMCC and DCS, and I have not used TMCC since I got DCS in April 2002.  Once you get DCS, you will be hooked.  Which Railking F-3's where you looking at?  I bought the set with the chrome-plated Santa Fe F-3's (30-4144-1) and it is a great set.  The F-3's look like PW Lionel 2333/2343 F-3s.  The set is higher priced than other sets, but I think it was worth every penny.  I bought it from a store in Greensburg, PA.

Jim, thanks for the response.  So I would have access to everything on the CAB-1 from the DCS remote, all TMCC functions?

I was looking at the B&O and C&O versions at a LHS, they may have been F7s, but they are similiar in appearance (at least to my yet trained eye).

It's all hands on deck in Europe.. Big southwest storm, 130km/h winds, later in the evening the storm will turn north and even get heavier. Up to 12 Bft is predicted..

For me, the southwest storm is the most hazardous, since the trainshed is on the south side Big Smile [:D].. I've seen on the news that california has snow? Give some snow over here please, I don't really mind the storm, but I do mind the rain in it.. Snow would be a lot better.Cool [8D]

Now the storm turns north, and around midnight it's said to ease down to 6 or 7 bft.. Have a nice day all.

I went to see Keith's old friend, Dr. Tinker today at lunch. He's doing fine and we got to chat in his dining room for a little while. I dropped off a 2056 with a buggy e-unit. I have a 2055 that also has e-unit problems, but one at a time.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Lionel will be offering in 2007. I'm especially interested to see what K-Line products will be available and at what price.

I shaved the Apitz forest this morning, Doug.

John,

Arthritis is my cross, tried all the usual stuff, I now use just two medications; 500-1000 mg cod liver oil daily, lubes the joints. Up to 8 a day of 500/30 Co-codamol for the pain if it gets too bad, avoid cold, excessive body mass, stairs and hills. If all that fails? My back up is Dr Frederick Robinsons Excellent Elixir, about six pints is good.

Still got one and a half bottles of the cold cure left, I hope it lasts out (the cold, I mean).
