Good morning all,

Did very little this weekend.  Changed blade on Toro.  Added some lights to portable layout.  Older daughter came down with her crew to get some glasses and to surprise my wife on her birthday Saturday.  No virtual Indycar this weekend.  To add to the storage/display question, all train items are stored in IKEA bookcases with glass doors.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

We just had a shaker, very minor one here so will have to check US Geologic for epicenter and size. It was a 4.5 out in Ocotilla Wells, about 65 or 70 miles East of here.

The only trains I have on shelves are these in the living room and one in the den.

I would like to make more but have never got around to it.

All of my stuff that isn't on the shelves is packed in tubs to schlep it back and forth to the museum.

Dennis right now I have a 12' x 16' layout. I have shelves all around it ( 3 sides ) 2 walls at 16' and a 22' wall. To swap out trains I have to get up on the train layout and walk across it to get something else, or option two, crawl under it ( it's 4' off the ground so I have about 3' 8" of clearance to calw thru. ) I'm still building shelves so when there done and there filled, the rest will be sold. as I want no trains under the table and forgotten about. I also have a K-Line Coca-Cola remake of the Lionel one and a K-Line hershey set with Alco's all in a hutch connected to a secatary type desk. They may or may not ever be used. most of my trains are what others call Shelf Queens. I like to look at them more than run them, but I do run them from time to time, especially the two on the layout at this time, There is 3 completed loop and one that will be completed in near future. I don't even have buildings out yet,

Dennis, when I had my 8x12 ft layout in the house, my situation was similar to Kevin. Trains - most of which had boxes except for my PW stuff - were (and still are) in closets on the other side of the house. So I also shuttled a few at a time. The only time I can run trains today are with a test loop on the floor or at a train show where our informal group sets up a layout. For the train shows I go to the train closets and decide which trains I plan to run (typ 3 locos with a selection of freight and passenger), unbox them, place into plastic tubs, and cart them to the show.

BTW - my closets look like Kev's photo of the shelves his trains on stacked on - packed to the gils!

Happy mother's day to all of you moms. Smile, Wink & Grin

Dennis, for me changing trains is a PITA.

Everything not on the table is boxed. So it is find something un-box it put it on the layout then box up what it replaced. And finding something in the box can be a job alone.

How do you guys change trains on your layouts.

It's pretty simple in my case, everything's ready to hand out in the "Chugger Barn," and with a simple 4 x 8 layout, three loop, it's easy.  Locomotives off the shelves, cars off the shelves, ready to go.

I theme the trains and they usually stay on the tracks for about a week, then I switch 'em out.  Last week was the N&W, this week it's the Jersey Central, diesel era, with a GP9 and a Trainmaster.  Next week, who knows?

Mornin' boys, and Happy Mother's Day to all you...  Well, you know what I mean.  We made a successful raid across the Potomac, yesterday, gathering provisions for the homestead.  No one would recognize me, as I had a bandana concealing my face.  The Mrs...?  She might stand out in a line-up, perhaps.  We treated ourselves to steak subs for dinner.

We will head up the mountain to Mom's later on.

I keep thinking about the chopper scene in Close Encounters, where Dreyfus takes off his mask...  Lots of strange vids on youtube...  And what's with the accelerated race to get back to the moon?  Coincidence?  Yeah, probably...

Hey, Lloyd was asking me what is the maximum incline, that is reasonable to pull a full train.  4 deg comes to mind but I'm not sure, or is it 2.5 deg, let me know what you all think.

As RT said, it depends on what is pulling the train. My Willams Trainmaster FM could handle a 3% grade, that is 3" vertical rise in 100" of horizontal run. It also depends how much of the train at one time is on the grade.

To calculate the angle of a 3% grade, (I really don't know why because one needs a vertical curve entering the grade.) use the Arctan of 3/100 and the angle is 1.7184°.  One half inch of rise in 20" of run equals a 2.5% grade. .5/20 = .025 or 2.5%

A 4° degree angle would need a 6.99 inches of rise in 100 inches of run.

The next lesson will be on how to calculate and stake in the field a 3-mile horizontal curve for a speed of 180 mph using the chord definition. This would be the type of calculation a high-speed European track engineer would need to perform.

Thanks.

Depends on the engine(s). also how many cars behind it. I have engines that could handle 4 degs and others couldn't with a fair size freight line behind it. Also is there a curve involved? then I would probably go with 2.5 degs or maybe a little more.

Take care all and have a great day!

Afternoon. Lumber finally gone except two boards [21"x 1/12" x 18']. Guy making table was impressed. Pine sawed from farm in the late 1920's. Really dried as was tobacco barn ["killing out" heat was 220 F]

They were late getting here as they got "involved" [witnessed] in a mess where I 40 and I 440 split. Guy running over 100mph in stolen car chased by deputy. Guy clips big trailer behind truck. Trailer flips pickup. Guy wrecks and bails. Frankie jumps out and chases. Lea [DIL RPD]called for dog and backup. Lea checks out guy in wrecked pickup. Then starts taking witness statements. Dog catches guy 2 miles away. He is now in WakeMed under guard. Wake deputy finds gun in vehicle.

Now go run and errand and then go to SisterIL's for ribs.

WOW. 68 and breezy. Sun helps.

Morning All,

Today is moving day, helping Chris to a new apartment.  Still "screwing" around in the garage.  Did manage to wash 3 cars yesterday.

Fife, Glad day went well, and only 1 bad moment?  That's good!  If your not feeling any pain you must have been taking it easy.

RT, Shelves look good!  Lots of work and trains!

Dennis, Enjoy the cooler weather, I too have lots of stuff to get rid of, hopefully someday soon.

Dennis my new attuted is if it doesn't fit on my layout or the shelves it's going to be sold.

I'm doing the same thing as well.  If I haven't run it for a while or wonder what the hell I bought it for to begin with into the trainshow box it goes.  I've been doing pretty well at the club's shows, not turning a profit on any of it but then I don't expect to.  Then I take the cash and turn it into someting else tasty.

Cool You rang...?  Mornin' boys.  Sunny and 41 along the Patterson Creek cut-off.  After 3 long days of bustin' my buttooty, 'tis nice to be home.  Did get to shake the rust off my brakeman skills yesterday, as we shunted some rolling stock around.  No pile-ups, but I did have one Dunce moment.  It felt really good to be back at the yard, and I'm not as sore as I thought I would be.

Wifey wants to go to the grocery store today.  We have the house all to ourselves, as youngest got picked up by her boyfriend?

New MTH catalog on-line now.  I find myself conflicted ordering anything after all of this...  I did win an AF Chessie animated caboose from e-bay, and it arrived intact, so that was nice.

Morning all, been a while. heres what I have been up to.

Started out at 48* this am, only going to 69* according to the weather people.

Well I now have 8 shelves of 16' done out of the 22', six feet to go, ( +/- a inch )

Kinda cut it off a little in this pic

I missed the bottom row in this pic but nothing there really set up yet.

And finally a distant shot of it all I've done so far.

I still have to paint the 9 boards I have left from when I ran out of paint, 8 will get cut to size before painting and after that I have more track coming in to finish them/wall. I'm starting to think I may have more shelves when I get done trains but I can't see how that would even be remotely possible.

I'm thinking when I get my new shed and can get things out of here of doing some custom ( height and width ) shelves to put unopened sets in. I have four or five I believe and all are shrink wrapped where you can take the lid off and display them. I don't really want to open them to display them. We will see.

Later all.

Evening folks!

Front blasted through this morning with a bit of rain, heavy wind from the nawth, and cool down. Sunny, 70's for the weekend!

Visit to foot doc today - licensed physicians were allowed to open this week. Trip to Lowes - time to replace the hoses to the washer - I do this every couple of years. Bought parts to get the automatic pool filler installed and operational for the summer. Could not locate a critical part to the unit, but finally found it after an hour...Grumpy

Had the lawn guy plant a large crepe myrtle to replace one ripped up by the tornado...$300 for an 8 footer...did not want to wait years for it to grow and the other ones are around 20 ft. Will possibly plant another one next week to balance out the yard.

Dennis - glad they got you on the meals distribution. Less time in the grocery store and more time to unbox your trains! I like those metal 6400's. They look good behind  most PW steamers!

Good Morning,

Weather sure has been warm around here.  Yesterday was the peak of the current heat wave.  Some places here in the LA basin got to the upper 90's, we were in the upper 80's.  Suppose to break today and be cooler, mid 70's.  Then stay around that for about a week I think.

My garage project is goin well, slow but good.  Can't believe all the stuff I have found!  Given that I have the majority of tools my Dad had (machinist), and my Step-Dad, and now my FIL.  I think I could open a hardware store.  Today, going to be sorting sheet metal and wood screws.  Sometimes it is difficult to identify which is which.  I know the threads are different, and wood screws typically are tappered.   But many sure look the same.  So I guess the final determinate will be which bin needs which. Indifferent

We did make a trip to Costco the other morning, boy do they have that well organized.  We got everything on our list, and got out of there in no time.

Chris is moving to a new apartment this weekend, so will help him with that.  And Lloyd sent me a text about working on some layouts, will find out the details later today.  Hoping wont start until Monday.

All the knews I have,

Nice looking turkey Congrats to your grandson Banks!

Take care all, be safe!  And, Happy Mother's Day

Same here SJ, 40 degrees heading to 50 with full sun and 31 tonight,,,WTH???

We have been on the end of May thing for some time already. Makes sence in Chicago not sure if it does out here. Is what it is. Our life has not changed much. We still come and go much like we always have. Now there is no meat in the stores. Seems there is now something from COVID-19 that the kids can get. If it is true, that will be a game changer for sure! They will give us old folks up in a heartbeat but their kids start to get sick and OH BOY watch their opinions change. Wink

I also see where the no lockdown thing in Sweden has backfired big time for them. Angel

SJ, it looks like you could be sitting next to a timebomb in MI with that open carry thing there. Hope it don't turn into a mob thing. People! Confused

March has returned Hi of 47 today. Low of 25 tonight. Our dicktater has extended the stay at home order till May 28, She is being sued from several sources but knows how long it will take to go through the legal system. The auto plants will open soon, that will put a lot of people back to work but won't help the small business' that can't reopen.
