Hello all
Been a while since I checked in here. When I am off during the summer I kind of get out of habit to check different sites on the computer. We had an extended shutdown due to our site UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) croaking.
We just got the new one installed last week and turned on yesterday. I am now pretty much back on the normal observing schedule.
Was an interesting summer vehicularly. The van got backed into while I was working on the sandrail debacle. Guy had no insurance and was a jerk to boot.
Bill and I spent a while trying to figure out why we weren't getting oil to the heads after we replaced the guides and valves on #2 cylinder. Finally got that dealt with and two weeks after I started driving it again, someone backed into it at the pizza place and drove away. Most of that damage is fixed and I have a 'new' set of doors to put on the van. Got most of my money back from the sandrail.
I turned 50 last week and we had a combination celebration of Mark (84), me (50), and bus #112 (70), a 1947 Twin Coach 41S transit coach, last Sunday. From the builder's plaque we knew the exact day it was completed (Nov.19). One of the better birthdays I have celebrated in recent memory. Will post a pic once I get them from my friend.
DougN - hope things get better soon. I need to come out and see your museum some day.

Guten abend,
It was rainy and a cool 42 today. The day flew by as I had a full schedule at work, our office Thanksgiving potluck, and then the older son's soccer game (another loss) this evening. For the office potluck, we did non-Thanksgiving day foods as we all tend to have our fill of Turkey this time of year. I made Cincinnati chili (Skyline Chili version). However, the wife did prepare our Thanksgiving day feast today since we hit the road tomorrow. We will begin our drive to Normandy around 13:00 and should arrive by 19:00. We will return home Sunday night. We have one day set aside to tour the beaches and I am looking forward to it. The rest of the trip will not consist of a formal itinerary.
Rob - Yes, Turkey is definitely making things interesting for many countries these days. It is a shame as the country has a great deal to offer historically and culturally. You are certainly correct about Normandy being a sobering place to reflect and give thanks; that is why I picked this time of year to visit. A Band of Brothers tour would be cool.
Good night,
Joe
Howdy Folks,
Temps soared to 50*F this afternoon so along with an oil change the beast got a it's bi-annual wash.
Off tomorrow to pick up another scale GG1. This one is a JLC version in brunswick and five stripes. Now I'll have 2 versions of the Washington terminal crasher 4876. Kinda interesting to discover the 13 year old Lionel has operating pantograph sounds whereas the most recent MTH offering is still silent here. I'll be curious to compare the JLC with the VL Legacy version.
Ran some trains late into last evening. Totally lost track of time until the sleepy Missus told me to shut it down. I can get so involved with both hands full, DCS in one, Legacy in the other.
Happy Hunting All!
Hi All,
Just popped in on my break. Low 40s and sunny here. I'll take it.
Joe - I was thinking about your trip when I was watching Designated Survivor the other night. Turkey was trying to hang President Kirkman out to dry when renewing the lease agreements for the bases. Very cool being in Normandy this week. Definitely a great spot to "give thanks." The Mrs. and I hoping to do the Band of Brothers tour in the next couple of years. A big one on my bucket list.
Roy - The switch stand lantern project sounds cool! I'd like to see pics if possible. Railroad memoriabilia is one area I'd like to get into more.
Dennis - Better wear the stretchy pants for sure!!
Have a good one.
Rob
Good morning,
Cloudy with light rain as a cold front comes through. Temps will fall all day into the low 30s. Glad I got what needed to be done yesterday.
I see that Caterpillar is now going into the UTV market. Just like them, They buy them from someone else and add yellow paint and 30% to the price. They are nothing but yellow Textron machines. Okay by me I guess as long as they keep my pension deposits coming!

Morning all!
Cloudy even though the news just said it was sunny. 50* right now.
Accomplished several projects yesterday. Hung a TV in the old family room, now my work room, so I can ditch the old stand. Daughter and BF stopped by so he helped me lift it on the wall mount. Installed new speakers on the back porch. Wasps had invaded the old ones this past summer! Cleaned/scrubbed a Dessel RR switch stand kerosene lantern I picked up at York several years ago. It was filthy with kerosene soot. Came out good and now on display. It is in very nice condition with all 4 lenses, fount, wick, etc.,
Phish - good dad tactics, of course it will eventually all backfire,
Chief - hope the inspection went well!
Joe - nice trip! I have heard Turkey is very interesting. Unfortunately in recent years long trips and time zone inversions are too hard on the wife and I. The trip to Germany, Austria, and Hungary a couple of years ago really flattened us...took 2 weeks to recover.
Daughter just called me and her car battery is dead. Guess I have a little project for today.
Regards, Roy
Good evening all,
Stur-fish, spoken like a true dad! Quiet day at work, but busy as well. Weather good enough for a nice walk today. Not much else going on. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,

My whirlwind tour of Turkey ended late Friday night. In six days, I went to three different locations (Ankara, Izmir, and Adana), which meant I took six flights and stayed in four hotels. I was tired when I returned home around midnight Friday, but then the family and I hit the road Saturday morning. We drove five hours to Beaujeu, France, to enjoy the arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau wine and the corresponding festival. It was well worth the trip as we stocked up on plenty of wine. We returned home Sunday evening. I am happy this work week is short and then on Wednesday the family and I hit the road again. We will drive six hours and spend a few days in Normandy, France. We have not been there yet and I believe it will be a great way to spend Thanksgiving. It is about bed time now.
Pretty much a football weekend. Both my Wolverines and my Packers had a tough go. :( Since the son was loafing around today, I had him do one last round of raking before the weather turns again.
Kev - My thoughts exactly on the NASCAR outcome! Nice burnout tribute to Jr. from the Ford team.
Jim - I cringe every time my daughters go out. I just hope they make smart choices. I prefer to keep my head in the sand and use the "don't ask, don't tell" method. May not be the best approach, but it keeps my sanity in check.
Good Morning from a chilly and sunny 34°F Southern Ohio,
A busy weekend it was. A couple of friends stopped by Friday morning and the extra hands were a big help in getting the Basketball goal set up. All the kids are glad to have the hoop back up since I had to move it for the new garage. Moved an acre of leaves and wrapped up the electrical in the distribution panel. All the circuits are now identified and a new panel schedule is made. Saturday was cleaning the house and in the evening a formal dance and three of the kids went. The oldest girls was all dressed up and hair made up and she was beautiful! When her date came by to pick her up I told him, “Nothing below the neck!” just to set the ground rules. Vigil and Sunday Masses and I got started making the pattern for the living room mantle. The stonework makes for a real challenge to fit the mantle as sung as possible. The top is pretty close to done in foam core, then I’ll make the bottom and transfer the foam core over to a one piece pattern in ¼” lauan plywood. After that the bottom following the same method. After that it’s pretty much a box with fancy trim. I’ll secure it to the stone with a ledger secured with tapcons.
It’s going to be a short 2 work day week so it is going to be busy couple of days,
May God bless
Jim
cheapclassics Roy, whatever it takes to get the job done....
A 45 degree start to the day. Crisp, clear skies!
Well the fridge is stocked for T-Day!
Banks - on the grandson's trophy!
Sun this morning, it's been awhile.
Snowed yesterday but temps were at 37 so none stuck.

And everything and anything is considered Game?????
Hello there,
rain continues now snow mixed in.
RT...sounds scary. Did you get any grief for a mistaken kill?
Roy....not sure I'd want to be in the woods knowing that kind of weaponry could come to bear. PA is pretty restricted. Small game semi automatic shotgunso are permitted but manual or semi must be plugged to 2 shells in the magazine. Large game has no magazine restrictions but must be manual.
Fife. ....sounds like you are enjoying your retirement job.
Prayers for those in need
Mornin' boys. Partly sunny and 41 right now, with wind and occasional snohizo throughout the day. Last train as narrator today, then I trade in the mic for an oversized red suit and itchy white beard... Youngest Princess and I are headed to yard tomorrow to decorate the rolling stock.
Looking forward to watching the last Nascar race when I get home tonight. Pretty cool that Jr and Matt are racing in the colors they entered the series in.
No one (except the networks) will miss "sparkle pony".
Still have yet to watch one snap of NFL. We are on bear watch again at fifedom.
Bruce, smooth trade! Good luck to you. Ah, Kevin, those do bring back memories. My dad's parents had a set of those for the grandkids to play with. Lots of hours spent constructing and de-constructing various assemblies. Good day today. Went to Columbus, Indiana and did some more Christmas shopping. Went pretty well. Got everything accomplished and did not spend all day doing it. Went to Mass this afternoon and the temps dropped 15 degrees while we were there. Watched an English Premiere League that I recorded earlier today this evening. I see where Princess Sparkle Pony "announced" she would end her career with the 2018 Daytona 500 and the Indy 500, but no signed deals have been confirmed. Probably will not turn a wheel next year. Sad thing is she probably would have had a semi-successful career in Indycar (and maybe won a few more races), but she traded that in for a NASCAR option that may have paid more money but left her with a record of nothing to brag about. Oh well. Rained like crazy today, but will be cold and dry tomorrow. Roy, I hope you and the better half enjoy the flick. I hope everyone has a good day.
Evening folks!
RT: LOL
Enough of our fawna get wiped out by disracted drivers that culling the heard with guns isn't necessary. I doubt the town would allow firearm usage here anyways. Never owned one myself.
All good things must come to an end, sorta. A number of home improvement deconstructions required the removal of a section of layout #1. But wait! A contract was signed with SWMBO that in exchange for her new bathroom and closets, I get to add on to railroad real estate. Soon there'll be O gauge thorough the entire house, Muuuhahahaha!
Of course, I put her to work too.
Laxin' tonight and preparing to get atter again tomorrow. have a great weekend, all.
Banks I grew up in eastern PA. and all we could hunt with was what we called pumpkin balls ( slugs) The area to populated for rifle. I remembering the same situaltion when hunting at my cousins in southern N.Y. ( just across the state line outside of Binghamton ) I remember that time to well. I saw a deer ( or thought I did ) in some over groath and so I fired what I hit with a pumpkin ball was a brown bear in the ars. Lucky for me I had a 44 mag which I used to bring him down when he stood up on his rear legs and looked right at me.

Rain turned to snow and then quit.
If you remember these your old as dirt.
I think the grand-kids will like them. They may have to invaid the layout.
Watching Michigan football and rain outside the patio door. 50 today. Blah weather.
It all has to do with population Banks.
Wisconsin is rifle. But they charge out of staters a small fortune to hunt and their deer are smaller than ours in IL. A in state WI. tag is $20.00 non resident tag is $135.00
IL nonresident tags are even more.
Hard to imagine not hunting deer with a rifle. I can see it in the densely populated areas where a stray bullet could be dangerous. It's got to make it harder to hunt due to limited range. I've got deer at 10 yards but also a couple at 300 yards and beyond.
