Thanx Big-Boy for your explanation. It's a piece of american culture that I don't know much about.. But I can see the "curse" and the fanatic support now..
Something like Ajax and Feyenoord in Holland (Football).
Daan. I'm Dutch, but only by country...

You're welcome Daan, and now you have me completely baffled with Ajax and Feyenoord, though I get the general idea. At least I know that when you say football, you mean the game we call "soccer". We Americans can be a little weird.[swg]

A very interesting observation Easter. I'm sure it was in the 50's some time. Hirailjon has actually provided some insight with his answer as to when the Dodgers moved west. 1955. Up until that time, there were really no major league teams west of the Mississippi. St Louis was as far west as baseball went. Train travel was still practical.

The A's moved from Phily to KC, the Giants from New York to San Fran. In 1961( the year I was born) both leagues expanded, shifting farther west, but the days of train travel were gone by then. Just think about the condition of the railroads passenger service.

We can try to deny it, but baseball and trains DO have connections. Do you think that the Yankees and Red Sox will ride Amtrak for their series?[swg]

Big,

Being a life-long Yankee fan...and the fact that the GM is a life-long Red Sox fan...I just kept my mouth shut!

By the way, my mom practically grew up on the third base line at Ebbets Field. My grandfather was golf-partners with Walter O'Malley and Fred Schaffer(as in: "the one beer to have when you're having more than one"). They were close enough that Mr. O'Malley bought a house across the creek from my grandfather, and joined the yacht club where he was Commodore.

Later, Walter's son Peter had a crush on my Mom. Just think of the trains I coulda' bought with that money!!!

My prediction: Sox in seven, swept by the cards in four.

Good one Easter. The bigger question is did the visiting team ride a team bus across town after meeting at their home stadium, or did they all just drive their own cars since both teams were at home? The subway was reserved for the fans.[:p]

Jon, given the part of the world you live in maybe it's best not to mention the fact that you are a Yankee fan. Life is just easier that way. You have some interesting baseball connections.

I like your prediction for the Sox. It puts them on cloud nine to take the Yankees, but I think the World Series needs more drama. How about 6 games with the Cardinals? Give the curse a chance to really kick in.[}:)][:D][;)]

Scratch, it's a best of seven series, and the Yankees have home field advantage. So, Sox by a score of 6 to 4. I'll put you down for $5, any takers?

Just kidding.[8D][:D][:P][;)]

big boy. i know one ball player that should have taken the bus. that was john rocker from the atlanta braves. it seems he took the number 7 train to get to shay staduim for a ball game against the mets. the next day he came out with some ethic red neck jokes about the type of clientel that rode that train. i think they baned his butt from baseball. i think he's some where in georgia now fishing in some brooks for some bottomfeeders.

I remember that guy, and the incident. I think that may be a good reason to take the team bus from the hotel to the stadium.

I've never riden the 7, but I've ridden a number of other trains. It is very interesting how at certain stops the demographic of the passengers riding changes completely. The train almost changes colors. It can be a little unnerving to suddenly be in the minority, because everyone knows you aren't a local, you're a tourist.[;)]

I'm not sure how safe it is to ride to Yankee's Stadium when it isn't game day. It was OK when we rode, but we were advised to stay with the crowd before and after the game.

Ah, the 7 train. This thread is giong back on topic quite nicely. Those MTH subway trains were a great contribution by Mike Wolf. Me and some friends are going to NYC this weekend to visit the Harmon Shops open house. (Former lair of the NYC S-1's). The #7 is definitely on our agenda.

John, I've been throwing in train stuff much of the way along this topic. I don't think Scratch expected all this when he started it, but it has been a lot of fun. I have to warn you, there will be another round of baseball after the game tonight, and throughout the series, so be nice.[;)]

Yes, the MTH subway cars are very cool. I can't use them on my railroad, but I like them. It is probably just as well that they don't come with a special set of station sounds, they would have to be unintelligible to realistic. Did you ever see that Saturday Night Live sketch with Harvey Keitel many years ago?[swg]

No Jerry, I haven't touched it since last May. I need to clean out my garage, so I can get my lawn tractor out of my workshop, and get my truck in for the winter. Then the layout will be back on my radar. Very soon.

That happens when one pitcher stinks and the other does not. Calls tend to go the way of the good pitcher....

Anyway - I take the train every time I go to the stadium - there's NO better way to get there. It's a long ride from Hamilton, NJ on the NEC then the subway, but it's a fun ride. They put on extra trains for the crowd. I have never felt unsafe on that ride. People are very nice - many are fellow fans. New York remains one of the greatest cities in the world.

Yeah Scratch, they made it interesting. I had given up on the Sox in the third, but flipped back in the seventh and was surprised ti see that it was a game again. So close in the ninth. Try again tonight.

Suggestion for the sox: MAKE RAMIREZ the DH, two balls got past him that should have been stopped.
NL rookie of the year: KHALIL GREENE !!!!!!
