Morning all,

Still in the heat wave here until tomorrow.

Regarding unions, I have worked with them and without them.  I fared better with them.  I am a retired member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (now includes trainmen) BLET.  Sometimes things were bad enough with a union.  God knows what it would have been like without it.  The railroads would have eaten us alive without the union.  Sounds like they are doing a pretty good job of it today from what I hear.  No cabooses, engineer only in the cab, including passenger trains, remote controlled helper engines and yard engines.  They have one or two switchmen doing everything in the yard now including running the engine.  Just my two cents.

Ray

The times they are a changing. Tongue Tied

That is right Ray guess you and I are not part of WeSmile, Wink & Grin I have been Union, non union, management and a small business owner. I retired as management on the Cat. union earned pension. So I think I have seen most of the sides in question.

There is a new generation out there that I am sorry to say I helped bring up, they are the generation of ME, MINE and I. They have no clue what the words We, Ours, and Us mean. All one needs to do is listen to them talk to figure it out.

Rich, just because some of the forum guys jumped does not mean they speak for all of the others. As you know, many are smart enough to keep their opinions to themselves.

I just wrote a whole long reply to you Kev and I just deleted it.  You're welcome, Jeff Laugh

You wrong on so many levels....but you're union.  That's fine I didn't want to start flaming this but you know....I'm ending this on my end.

If you have something to say, then you can e-mail me.  We differ on opinions.  That's that.

Yes, I am p$$ed off.  Just so you know.  And I ain't leavin'.

WOW someone is full of themselves!

Kev - You don't know me from Adam and what you have done is take this to a personal level - again. I purposefully chose to word my posts the way I did as to avoid ruffling feathers - you chose to continue to ruff your grouse.

My grandfather dropped out of school in the 8th grade and opened his own business, ran it in the black for 37+ years. It was this work ethic that he passed down to his children, who then passed it down to theirs... you don't deserve ANYTHING off the back of someone else, you work for what you earn and you do it with the utmost of your ability and with pride. If you live by those ethos then there is no need for a union in your life. I am not saying there are union workers that don't have a strong work ethic - I know quite a few who do... back in PA I had two friends who graduated HS together, one was a union pipe fitter the other was a plumber who worked for his father's company, when his father retired he signed the company over to his son they are @ 40 years old now - guess which one is considering retiring in 5 years?

OK guys, this is starting to get personal. That's enough about the unions. Let's move on to something else.

Sunny and into the 70's today.

Busy weekend.  Re-installed the trim in the bedroom that we are re-working.  Cut new trim to go along the bottom of the baseboard and the floor - bedroom is on 2nd floor, table saw with 45 degree cut set up is in the basement.  Got my stairmaster workout!

We bought some herb plants, pepper plants and some tomato plants.  Everything is in the ground but the tomatoes, which didn't look too good Sunday morning.  It didn't help that Saturday night was near freezing.

Ran trains for a bit on Saturday afternoon.  Decided that the MPC era Hudson I got recently needs some work on the smoke unit - it is kind of weak.

My '72 Chevy truck did not start Saturday.  Lots of crank, no fire.  Took a look at it tonight.  Fuel in the tank, started on starting fluid, took the fuel line loose and found that the pump was working.  Ended up having to cut the fuel line to get to the filter in the carb, which was not really too dirty.  Here is the strange part - I put everything back together with a piece of hose to patch the fuel line I cut, and it fired up and ran.  I fixed it without really fixing anything ? Tongue Tied ?  I'll put an order into LMC truck for a new fuel line.  I don't like running too much rubber fuel hose under the hood.

All for now.

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps reaching 60.  Sato was 6th quick in practice today for AJ.  Work was manageably busy.  Spent the evening trimming the redbuds so neighbor would not complain about them.  Cleared dead wood out of apple tree and trimmed out some low hanging branches out of a maple.   TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

The temp outside is 49 and yes the furnace is on.

RI Jack grab a sleeping bag and you could spend a couple days in the Tardis, BYOB though. We can set in down in the back yard. A few indoor things done this PM but no heavy stuff. Too much pain in my hands and wrist today. Most days it doesn't hurt at all. This wasn't one of them..For some reason we skipped Banilla tonight but there is plenty for the thingy crew...S.J.

Got my business in town taken care of today. The bank business was just a $30 deposit but when you're as poor as I am that's a lot of money. Went to the pharmacy and got refills on the meds I needed. Didn't get much done on the layout today. I tore down the two new (rebuilds) GP40's and put them back together just to make sure I did it right in the first place and for the fun of it. Later I got wrapped up in a movie about Ernie Pyle. If you don't know the name look it up. He's well worth reading about. Tonight I'm watching something from 1949 called 'Canadian Pacific' starring Randolph Scott.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Happy Birthday John!  Sorry, thought I posted last night, but I don't see it now?  Banks  - hope all is well!

Been really stressful at work, we had to get some help to deal with some crap coming from managers who don't have even a clue what my job is or how I do it, and that goes for my whole team.  We have a new SOP coming from Washington, and that will help a lot.  I can't really go into this, but I'm very grateful for my representation at work.  You guys would not believe....

Man we had a hard frost this morning and headed for really warm weather now!

Great video Charlie and great Layout SJ!  You sure have some fun going there, boy!

TARDIS is ready - we have banilla and chocolate syrup, but someone ate all the nuts!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Mornin' boys.  Sunny and frosty in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Hope my palm tree makes it.

WV was breezy and cold.  The mountain gave Fifepup one last snowfall before as we left.  He was anxious to get home.  Had a real nice visit with Fifemom and Poppy, and even sang for my supper.

Checked on our property; still there.  There's a concern statewide in WV with potential wildfires, which really got me looking into escape routes, and defensive landscaping.  Some of our smoke-eaters can chime in.

Good Morning!

Woke up to 37 @ 6:00 AM. Is this May 14 or March 14?

Brutus: I could have swore that I posted yesterday too!

Thanks for the Birthday Wishes.

Yesterday I took Mom for some tests. So far she is doing great.

Happy Birthday Doug M!

Fife: In the Jersey Pines it is recommended that your property be cleared at least 100 feet from your house. With the right wind I have seen fire jump a 2 lane County Road that ran adjacent to the 6 lane Garden State Parkway with a median and continue on the other side.

Have a Great Day!

Fife, there is alot you can do to protect your house from wild fires.  If I remember correctly, your building new?  exterior building materials have come a long way.  things like cement board siding and metal roofing.   Now of coarse, if the fire starts on the inside, these materials only make the damage worse, because it doesnt let the fire burn straight up, it instead contains it to the inside.  maybe ANJDEVIL can chime in here.

Defensive landscaping is a MUST, but I dont know much about it..

When I lived in the mountians, I had the trees cut back far enough that if the tallest one was on fire and fell, it would miss the house

I know none of this is stuff anyone wants to think about, but what they say "a ounce of prevention is worth  ....... i dont know the rest

I will at the very least be clearing away the "fall" line.  Wifey wants to clear 5 acres.  I shall resist of course.  I will however gather and burn all deadwood.  Some unknown local has apparently been riding an atv across the N/E corner of the property, and at first this perturbed me (heck, it's posted),  but the "trail" could lead us out to safety, if need be.  My development is one way in/one way out from the south, but you can get to the river by going off-road to the north.

Fife, Sounds like a good idea having a second way out. We only have one but we could cross the neighbors if need be. You will enjoy building out the property. It is a great project, everyone should have the chance to do in their lifetime. As John said trees too close can be a problem and in hindsight I have a few I should remove. Also a metal roof is a good idea too. Something else I wish I had done. It would also do you good to put on a raincoat and walk the land in a downpour so you know where the water is moving before you place your buildings. Water management is something some forget and it can cause a lot of grief. Storm Storm  My neighbor Jim can tell you about that. Bang Head

Our 10 acres is on top of a crescent shaped ridgeline.  Zero drainage issues.  A gully separates us from the mountain bottom.  From a tactical viewpoint, we got "the high ground".

Fife, Sounds like you have it covered. Yes

We installed a berm behind our shed to surface drain water coming down the north slop into one of 5 ravines on the property. I sure am glad we did that.

Newer log homes are treated with a fire retardant. The logs will smolder for hours before actually burning. I've seen homes built out of concrete as well - not blocks, but foam 'blocks' that interlock and are then filled with concrete - most people use them for foundations only, but I have seen them used above ground as well. They are then wrapped on the outside with standard exterior surfaces, and drywall inside.

Aloha. I am celebrating my birthday at work - although it is suddenly a beautiful summer day. Maybe Ivor will  get a flanged friend today. This sure is interesting about defensive landscaping. I thought Fife was going to put in a huge outdoor layout taking up all 10 acres. Wouldn't that solve everything? Big Smile
