Kev - I agree with you 100%. As I posted on facebook on Brent's site "To bad they didn't get rid of the 19 yo. Now they will spend all the money and time, blame his brother, and then give him a short jail time.

And on Brutus's site "will the American people get justice? With our court system, our attorney system and the leniency in sentencing, I doubt we will get justice."

Jack,

Interesting to me that YOU can talk and claim to KNOW  the opinions for all of those 1,000,000+ local residents in your corner of the U.S. "That IS the opinion of the 1,000,000+ local residents in my corner of the U.S. who lived through it and were directly and indirectly affected here this past week.  Count my family among them."

Get off your SoapBox Dots - Sign

KEV......get real.  You, I , and each of us knows that the terms "all" or "none" seldom apply to anything.  You are parsing words.

But you and I would be very hard-pressed to find a significant portion of that 1,000,000+,  grousing about the massive LE and civilian effort and the expense, either during and/or after these tragic events.  I forgot to mention the economic hardship on the countless metropolitan businesses, large and small, that had to close as a matter of public safety and civic duty.  And yes, re your mention of Dunkin Donuts, a few of the local DDs, with the prior express permission of LE and local authorities, did remain open....... to feed those on the front lines.  Good for them.

_______________________________________________________________________________________.

Speaking only for myself,

I feel you guys misread the main points in my post. Most of it was a reflection on media overkill and  political overreaction and it's cost.

KEV........maybe you should have chosen your words a bit more carefully.

Media overkill was evident, agreed.  But it was that same media overkill that plastered the air waves with enhanced photographs and video of the suspects, "overkill" that brought the public out of the woodwork with actionable and effective tips:  i.e., the license plate numers and make/year/color of the vehicles the suspects were (actively) driving after the blasts.  In two instances those vehicles were located within minutes of the airing by the media, enabling LE to close in on and keep the heat on the bombers (Cambridge, Watertown).  There were more of these civilian contributions due to the media coverage which I won't go into here.

Political overreaction?  We should only hope that our Congressmen and Senators could act this decisively, this swiftly, and with this level of bipartisanship on other weighty matters as they did here when it was really needed.

Cost?  When public safety and lives remain in continued imminent danger as was the case here, cost has to take a back seat.  Now let's talk about results.  Short term that  "overreaction" saved more lives and reduced costs by ending this and nailing the bombers before they had an opportunity to either continue their assault or escape.  These two were still armed, still carried explosives, and were still using them until they were stopped.  Justice will not be delayed.

You need to clarify your position on the limitations you believe should have been placed on the media and on LE in response to the Boston bombings.  My position is clear: the response was appropriate and effective.  The imminent threat was eliminated.  It sent the right message to others, foreign or domestic, contemplating similar terrorism against the citizens of the U.S.  And the payback was in the results.  With every bold and decisive act comes a price to be paid.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Weather it was handled right or wrong only time will tell. I truly doubt that it will stop the next line of attacks by people intent on doing so and they will relish in the glow of the media hype and knowledge that they are effecting so many. We tend to feed them what they are looking for.

My Dad (RIP) always used to say that we remember the longest and regret the most the things in life we did not do.  I am pretty sure you, I, and the rest of us here hope and pray that none of the three tragedies that befell our nation this past week or so will have been suffered in vain, and that the actions taken will bear fruit.

 _____________________________________________________________________________________

Unforeseen  things happen all of the time to good and bad people and if it is in your back yard then it is more meaningful to you than others. I doubt the people in the Texas town that got blown up were paying much mind to the Boston area the last few days. I would also think that those who are dealing with flood waters in their houses have much else to think about.

The U.S. is my/your back yard.  All three incidents should be meaningful to each of us, no matter where that tragedy occured.......whether it be the bombings in Boston, the Texas blast, or the flood waters in your old home town.  Lives, safety, and suffering know no state lines.  I would hope that when those in need are rightfully consumed with their own dilemma that the empathy, concern, sympathy, and support of others would know no boundaries.  I did not say we should dwell on one tragedy over another.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

But maybe they should ask your advice on what to dwell on.

Sarcasm and personal attacks have no place here, do not support your position, and serve no useful purpose.

______________________________________________________________________________________

And that is my opinion.

And mine.

Prayers for All in need, Angel Good day!

My sentiments as well.

Jack.

Good morning all,

V8 Dennis, thanks for the report on the One Day paint job.  Sounds like they are the best for lower cost paint jobs.

Re Boston manhunt etc.  The media does go nuts over this stuff but it is the price we pay for a free press.  Glad they took the suspect alive though.  Maybe we can find out more about why?  We are still talking about conspiracy theories since Jack Ruby shot Oswalt after all these years.

later,

Ray

Good morning, afternoon, whatever. It's 62° with 31% humidity. It's sunny and the high will be 70°.

Got a late start today. I'm very sore from yesterday and I am moving very slow. I feel like I've been hit by a jet propelled FP7 attempting to break the land speed record for a railroad locomotive. I think I'll just stay home today and hold down the bed.

Lets look at this from another point Kev hopefully we can get info that might help prvent another insudace by taking him alive. ie who's working with him ect probably not but you never know. Thats why it was inportant to take him alive. Yes for fiancial purpose yeah blow him away and end it. But remember he's just a pawn in this they did not act alone they acted with backing from some where

Five days of carnage, loss, and terror in metro Boston is over, at least for those who were not directly harmed.

But it will never be over for the families and friends of those who lost their lives.  It is not over for the maimed and wounded (180+), dozens of whom remain in area hospitals.  It is not over for their families and friends.  It probably isn't over for those tens of thousands here who had a close brush with death, those who but for the grace of God or sheer luck, were not killed or wounded.

And it is not over for each and every one of us who came to the realization nearly 12 years ago that the U.S. is no longer insulated from those who would hate and attack the very freedoms and way of life on which this country was built, built with blood and ultimate sacrifice.

I agree with RT that apprehending the remaining bomber relatively intact is of paramount importance to determine if others were complicit in the lethal activities of the two.  We must leave no stone left unturned until this matter has been thoroughly investigated.

KEV.......re how to pay the bill for all of the over the top to catch one dumb kid???”

I think you lost the very purpose and importance of this level of response to the bombings and terrorism on our own soil, toward the apprehension of the two bombers.  It was not simply cost, votes, or the elimination of the imminent danger.  If nothing else, the response sends a powerful message to those who would do us harm and threaten our way of life, from within or otherwise.

Opinion?  Age of those with opinions?  That IS the opinion of the 1,000,000+ local residents in my corner of the U.S. who lived through it and were directly and indirectly affected here this past week.  Count my family among them.  My own granddaughter and son-in-law were in Boston the day of the bombings.  And right now someone with whom we train (our dog) is lying in a Boston hospital minus his limbs.  My personal list goes on, but I digress.

Looking back at the isolationism and head-in-the-sand avoidance of our forefathers during the ramp up to WWII, and considering this massacre and the level of response, my WWII vet Dad (RIP) would have summarized this effort and the cost thusly: “Cheap at twice the price.”

That is my opinion.

Mornin' boys.  Mornin' English.  Breezy & 50 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Ain't sure what's in store for me today.  Certainly have had my fill of the news viewing.

Well, my search for Lionel Generals yielded negative results...almost.  Found a gent who has the sweet boxed set by LCCA, and he will ship them to me this week.  I dragged poor Brent all over the fairgrounds yesterday trying to find a compensatory purchase, but glad I was finally able to seal-the-deal this morning.   As Wifey put it,"I see you're not going to be happy unless you get them..."  I bought Brent Wings-and-Yeungs for his patience last night.  Tough drive home in the downpour.

A fine turn-out for the Pot-pic yesterday.  Always the best part of my trip.  Got to meet AFRay.  HudsonJohn supplied us cream Laugh from the "stoe-ah..."  Dinner

Hope everyone has a safe trip home, including Buckeye from his Baltimoe-ah/Philly trip.

Konbanwa,

The weather was vastly different today than the past week or so: the high probably only reached 45 and it rained most of the afternoon and evening.  The base had planned a power outage for about 10 hours starting at 0600.  So last night before bed I cranked up the refrigerator and freezer and then woke up this morning at 0545 to make some bacon and hardboiled eggs so the kids and I could have a hot breakfast even though the power would be out.  It turns out our part of the base was not affected by the outage and I was robbed of over an hour of sleep as the youngest did not wake up until 0700.  Oh well, I’m glad we had power all day.  I did have time to complete the homemade bacon today: I took the pork belly out of the refrigerator and then smoked it.  After it cooled a little, I sliced off a few pieces and fried in a pan for a couple of minutes.   I do believe I will never buy store-bought, packaged bacon again as it turned out great.  I’ll start another pork belly tomorrow and will try pure maple syrup this time instead of the honey.   The honey did not cut the salt cure as much I would have liked, but it was still great.  My two boys would have eaten all of it today if I would have let them.  It’s just about bedtime here and we Sunday school and church in the morning.

I’m thankful order has been restored to Boston; the law enforcement folks up there did a great job in my opinion.  I also read about some of the heroes (firemen) who died in the plant explosion in Texas.  Those were some brave folks indeed.

Great job Jake!   That should look great on the scholarship applications.

Ryan – That’s great you were able to meet the guys at York.  I’m like Kev and hoping to make it there someday too, but I think my drive might be a bit longer than his. Whistling

SJ – Thanks for sharing your York memories with us.  I figured you were able to hear the sounds before buying one.  I’m sure they’ll sell for less than $200 soon as well.  I paid significantly less than retail for the one WBB loco I have; it’s a great engine and I am very pleased with its sound and performance.  Have a safe trip back home.

Joe

Good Morning All!

It is a whole 28 degrees here this morning. Going to high in the mid 40's. Some spring so far. It has been quiet on the pot ... maybe now that some of those yorkers are back things will pick back up.

I agree with rtraincollector I wanna see some pics from the trip.

Ran the trains for a few laps last night. Still trying to figure out the layout in my mind. Hope to have a foundation started this weekend.

Off to do some dream shopping and surfing.

Hope everyone is safe from storms and such. Have a great day!

The answer is WHY.

WHY did he do it/

What made him do it?

Who brainwashed him and his brother?

Lots o questions and with a dead lifeless body NO answers.

Food for thought.

laz57

Why they should have not killed him on the spot and saved us tax money.  The above is it.  Once he is dead, it harder to determine all of the above.

Dogs were not deemed dangerous.  Drunk neighbor who had harassed them through the fence continously, entered the fenced in back yard [with sign on the gate] where he had been told not to go, got attached.  Pretty bad but NC General Statute says, if harassed prsent or past and trespassing on private property, dog is not deemed dangerous.  That was our findings.  When in hospital, he first admitted he was not suppose to be there and was drinking.  Later changed his story to the dog unlatched the gate and they all came out and got him in driveway.  Three animal control officers testified impossible for dog to do unless it had fingers.  Hearing started at 11 AM and ended at 3 PM with no lunch break.  LOOONG!

Storms came through.  Tornado warnings north of us in VA with damage.  None at lake house or here.  Good rains.

I understand that Jack was on his usual stealth investigation in finding the last bomber.  Seems he found the torn boat cover and called the owner to investigate. Whistling  Got watch that old Yank.  He's sneaky.

Off to bed.  Parade tomorrow AM.

Got called down to my fathers place today. He wanted to get some things done that require two people. While their my niece and her husband came down to look at the work that's being done on the west wing. It's starting to look like a house now instead of a bunch of framed walls. So I went around with them and we all inspected the quality of the work. It pretty good overall. Not ready to move into yet but it's getting there. The floor plan is open concept. With the exception of the bathrooms and bedrooms you can go into each area unhindered by doors and you can see quite well from one room to another. But I ended being on my way too long and now my knees, hips, back and shoulders are giving me plenty of grief. I hope I can get some sleep tonight. Looks like tomorrow will be a sunny day with a high in the 70's. I was a bit surprised that nobody asked what that big loco on the Sundown shop track was this morning. That's my second largest loco and it can take 18" radius curves and #4 turnouts all day long. So can my biggest one.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Amen he's in custody YEAH!! now the freakin' turkey has to deal with system.

Now how to pay the bill for all of the over the top to catch one dumb kid??? Open your wallet RT too bad we can't make the media pay with some of the money they got from the commercialism on slot they forced on us today. They should of saved us the money and killed the dumb kid, he will be on the tax payers dime till way past the end of me. Dots - Sign. The waste of people and resources was the worst I have ever seen in my 61 years. WTF? Now we will need to thank all of the guys that got OT and had Donuts today on the Gov dime. Dead Come ON!!!! what is wrong here?????  I wish I was out there today and wanted to commit a crime. It would of been a cake walk. Laugh Hmm Shame on us all. Law and Order is out of control. One dumb kid stops the world???????????????

Now don't get me wrong here,,, I have the highest regard for these men and woman who put their lives on the line but I think that their management is out of control. It is driven by the political a$$holes who put these men and woman out there in stupid numbers as working for the people when they just want to stay in office  and be re-elected.

The day started early with breakfast at 7 am. John, John Jr, Ray, Laz, jefelectric & wife, Roy and Ryan.  1pm we met for pictures.  The entire breakfast crew plus Brent, Fife, Banks & wife also joined us.  Brent took our photo.  After that we had a tailgate gathering at John's vehicle for some ice cream.  Homemade NJ Ice cream, YUM!   Lemon was fantastic!!

Capped off the day with a filling diner at a local diner with my Michigan crew, John, John Jr and Ray.

Has been a great York.  From all my friends here on the forum to Norm Charbonneau, Todd Wagner a former Lionel employee and others I have not mentioned, spending time wandering the halls and chatting has been fun.

It was a deliteful no grits day. Besides Lemon, John also brought Banilla and several other flavors that were vere good...Joe I can't run the new GP30 until we get home but I have heard them and they sound good for an engine that sells for about $200....S.J.

Kev, I forgot .... about your HAZ-MAT cabinet

Thats too bad its not gonna work.   That would have been cool to have that in the den full of guns.......

On a serious note, you should see what the second hand market is like on them.   You may be able to sell it and buy a gun cabinet.  And take it from me, pay the 50.00 to where ever you buy the gun safe from to have them deliver it and put it where you want it.  Then all you have to do is stand there and drink a cold one and point.........

Or just keep it and use it in our workshop for paints and stuff..... or maybe an auxillery ammo cabinet?  LOL

AF RAY, I missed ya leaving breakfast this AM, did you get in touch with Tyke at the show?

gotta run

Ryan

Kev, bet your glad to be on high ground......

Ryan You bet I am. Wink Someday I hope to meet the guys face to face. Tongue Tied A bit of a drive from North Central ILL. Surprise

Jake the dam did not break but the barges that hit it stopped the water from flowing over it and cause the back up of water into town. What a mess Marseilles is today. Most of the south side of town is under water and the town is locked down to all traffic. BTW, Congrats on the top ten. Yes  I was one of those kids that would,,,,,,,,,, get into trouble. Mischief Smile, Wink & Grin

You all have a good night.

P.S.  Here is a picture our daughter took of our old place in Plainfield. Bad but about 4' shy of the flood of 1996. In 1996 that lot line fence was under water. Sure am glad we are not there anymore. I am tooooo old for that stuff. I did love living on the river in Plainfield IL. Most of the time. Surprise
