Today is an easy day. I have a few chores to do and then I can relax and watch the Nascar race. One more week and they televise the spring training ballgames for the Indians. It will be interesting to see how the new Manager and players work.

Good morning. It's 63° with 100% humidity. Numerous showers and thunderstorms.


Looks like it's going to be a wet one today. Thunderstorms are expected all day with heavy rain and high wind gusts.

I'm not really sure what I'll be doing today. I finally got to sleep late last night then woke up in the middle of a sugar crash about 3:15 and I've been up ever since. Needless to say I'm tired and don't really feel like doing anything. In fact you could say I feel like crap. I burned up a 5/64" metal cutting drill bit yesterday when I was working on a Mantua gondola so I need to get a replacement for that when I can. I didn't think the metal bottom of those old Mantua cars was that tough. Most plastic cars have a metal plate in them and the bit goes through them like butter. Guess it's time had come. Now you're probably wondering why I'd be using a 5/64" bit as that seems a little big. That's the closest I have to the size screw I use to secure my Kadee 242 coupler boxes. There's nowhere in this area to get 2-56 screws so I use 2x3/8 slotted brass wood screws. It fits and does the job I need it to do and I can get them right in town. If it's too long I can cut off the excess.

It seems that my internet problem has vanished. No more IP dropouts. Looks like it was the modem despite the cable company's assertions that it MUST be something in my cable in the trailer. But when you go through and replace every bit of cable with new and have everything out to the main pole replaced and the problem remains there's only one thing it can be. It looks like I have that bug out of my hair.

Cheif, Thats exactly how i do my generator.  they can keep the 1500.00 switch.  I once forgot to flip the main, the breaker on the generator trips instantly, has to do with the generator not being "Tuned" to the line frequency    I dont know, some EE was trying to explain it to me awhile back, but in engineering terms,

 And, i forgot to mention, the excavator guy was here yesterday, and said it so muddy down there from 100's of years of leaves decomposing.  he said scrape er' down a foot or so and it'll be fine!

  Nice this morning here a4 37 to get to 54 today.  Yesterday did nice walk with my GALs.  Came home and warshed the two vehicles, and shammied down.  Went to church then had supper.  No trains last nite.

PAT, yepper got to look into the gas generators.  Gotta talk with my GASMAN and see what is out there.  I know about the GENARIC Gens but is there other brands.  I'll check it out maybe this week.

RYAN, 100 years o leaves that will make good worm bedding for trout season.

Chief and Ryan. manual transfer switches cost a lot less and do the job.

My Generator is hooked to a manual transfer switch and will not let gen power to the main line circuits with the line power hooked up. It is also okay per code. It has ten circuits and keeps the house alive. I got it NIB on the bay for $124. 00 and it can handle 30 AMP. It is just like this one in the link below but 10 circuit not eight. The 100’ of 10-3 with ground wire cost more than the generator manual transfer switch. All you do is start the gen decide what circuits in the manual transfer switch you want to run turn off the ones you don’t want and throw the switch. When the power comes back turn off the gen turn on all the circuits in the transfer box and flip the main switch.   If I had a bigger generator I could just throw the switch but my generator is not large enough to run all ten circuits at once. It is only 5,000 watt and 20 AMP

I had a thread deleted from OGR yesterday and I think it was sabotaged by a couple guys. Too bad they spoiled it, I thought it was a good subject and was quite active. Our power is back on. Off for 3 3/4 days!

Chief - To run AC we will have to flip switches back and forth between the AC and other motors (Ref and freezer. etc.) I timed my generator and I got 11.5 hrs on one tank of gas. I still have to fill it twice a day.

Laz - I have a westinghouse 9000 watt. There are other brands out there.  I sugest you stay away fron Harbor Freight. They only have 1 yr warrentee and no electric start. Also has several poor ratings.

Kev - I considered the manual transfer switch, but didn't have the required extra breakers.

John - The extension cord game can't be fun. How do you shout the doors with the cords entering the house? And don't the cords mess up the carpeting? And there is the trip factor.

Beautiful but chilly day here today. It hit 45 and not much sun. My son and I finished the mounting and wiring for a Aerator on the front  of his John Deere Quick Track Stand up machine. We bought it used and made all of the mounts ourselves. Works great.

Rich: The train show in Edison is next weekend. We are planning to be there.

Chief, Ryan: Please use care with that setup for the generators. They are a Lineman's Nightmare. Kevin is right.

Pat, I agree with you with the extension cords. It is a small generator and all we used it for was the sump pump, the refrigerator and a couple of lights. Heating we use the wood stove, cooking the wood stove and the Coleman propane stove or the BBQ Grill. Soon we aill be springing for that 20kv Kohler, hooked up according to code. The 40 year old 3500 watt Sears Generator is giving up the ghost.

Evening all.  Warm.  Fair and like spring should be.  Warmer tomorrow.

SIL's mid afternoon meal was great.  Went to Red Bowl.  Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian and Vietnamise.

John, you noticed I put in bold and first, THROW MAIN BREAKER FIRST.  I also noted if you didn't, you would give linemen a fit.

Worked in Box for a little.  Been getting a motion detector going off during the night.  Last time, within 15 mintues.  Turned both of them off.  Well, found the problem.  Tom and Jerry [or just one].  I found someone had eaten some of my dried Edgecombe Co. peanuts in the shell.  Left crumbles and a "calling card".  I knew we caulked around the floor next to the wall and this flooring was right over the subflooring.  Also caulked around the ceiling and then put up molding.  Doors and windows are sealed tight.  AH.   Check the electrical closet.  I had forgoten to caulk around the cables going through the floor and a couple going through the ceiling in the closet.  Also in there was an empty peanut shell.  Its caulked up tight now [top and bottom].  Up by the peanuts is a tray of "blue candy" for desert.   That is in case they or it is hiding inside.  Don't think so but wanted to be sure.  Wait a week and then enable motion detectors [which are marked pet safe].

Now for popcorn and TV.

Drizzle and in the 40's here today.  Haven't really seen much sun for the last three weeks.

We returned home yesterdat froma vacation trip to Kentucky.  We've put an offer in on a 5 acre woodes hillside lot there.  We walked it and saw that there were a couple of potential building sites on it.  Nice views, hiddwn from the road, and there is lots of mature hickory and oak trees standing on the property.  The price was right, so we bit.  Starting to tie up the financing and other details related to closing a real estate deal over the next few weeks.

Going to be fun to describe our retirement property to my boss this week

The hotel internet service was poor, so I didn't bother keeping up with the pot.

Finally got the land line back in service last Thursday.  The last snow cannon shot that landed here on Feb.26 took the phones out.  They came back on March 4 long enough to get a computerized sales call, then went out again until Thursday.  I'm thinking that I should get a reduction in the bill for the time I didn't have.  I would not complain over a day or two, but 10 days is a different matter.

Sumbob - saw a Corvair panel truck that is probably for sale on I-70 just west of Columbis, Mo. on the way home.  Looked rough and incomplete, though.  Would be a pretty big project.

Got the #60 trolly and #50 gang car I picked up in that group of used stuff I bought at the LHS last month cleaned up and running.  I'll need a couple of parts for the trolly. 

Speaking of the trolly, it falls in and out of a 'coffee grinder' sound similar to a Burro crane.  When the trolly is making the 'coffee grinder' sound, is is slower than when it settles down and runs quietly.  It is worse in one direction than the other.    This is the first one that I have messed with.  Do I have an armature end play issue here?

Back to work tomorrow - the SS fund needs my help.

John!!! never say that Kevin is right about anything again.   ( burns Chief's blood and he can't take a yank being right)  I don't want Chief to have the big one on my account. But what could happen if someone did not know what Chief knows about his hook up and tried to fire up his system with the wrong procedure? A lineman may get fried. That is why I did mine by code not Reb style where someone could get killed. My system is fail-safe, and code.

 Pat. If you look at the transfer switch I got , it comes with the breakers, I did not have to buy any extras.,

Did get a bit more of weed pulling done today, spent about two hours climbing around the hill like a mountain goat. Filled a garbage can for yardwaste pickup on tuesday, after that I was wiped out.

Just got back from the morning walk with my dynamic duo. A chilly 32. Because of the time change, it was dark and we just did a lap around the block. A very uneventful walk. Now it is time for breakfast. I think I will join Chuck in a bowl of Cheerios.

Today, Doray and I are going to a trade show for the Ice Cream Shop, at a supplier's wharehouse in Vineland. They have a great lunch and sampling the products is alwas tasty!  Tonight I have school.

The temperature dropped a few degrees today but it was still sunny.  The workload was the typical amount for a Monday.  We had some authentic Filipino food today for lunch, but it wasn’t as good as the stuff I had in the Philippines in 2000.  I made my version of al pastor tacos for dinner tonight and not a morsel is left.  The older son’s newest Wii game arrived today; it is a Star Wars game and it is awesome. 

John – I’m looking forward to baseball season.  We’ve been watching the World Baseball Classic the past few days.  I wish I would have known there were some games being played in Tokyo sooner and I would have bought some tickets.  Have fun at the trade show.

SJ – Do you ever see any Lionel Reading passenger cars (6-15102, 6-15104, 6-15105, 6-15106) at these shows?  I have two (6-15101, 6-15103) so far to go with the FA-2 AA (6-18934) set I have, but I would like to get a few more.  The one set for sale on eBay is way expensive.  I haven’t seen any for sale at any of the online retailers.

John, Cheif, Kevin, as a electrician by trade ( I never finished my EE degree, just couldnt wrap my head around the way those guys think. )     I was employed and also had a electrical contracting company  that I started in High school and ran for many, many  years after that,

When I hook the generator up, trust me, theres not a lineman in sight.  we are also on our own transformer. and when I do forget then main, like I said before, it trips the breaker instantly on the transfer pannel I have set up.   The way the pole transformers are set up, I am guessing, is that the 240 volt side has such a low resistance or is it impeadance? , it acts as a dead short. when back fed.

its too early for all this teckinical stuff.........

let me think here for a second....  your typical wall charger is a 10:1 ratio  (120v to 12 v)  the trans former at the pole would be about a 42:1 ratio (10Kv to 240 Vac)    so that means there is 42 turns on the primary side to every one turn on the secondary side.......

I'll leave out the three phase Delta and Wye configureations, along with 208/277 and 480  industiral set ups
