Hi RYAN,

I live in Millersburg, about 25 miles north of Harrisburg.  East Earl, is over by Millersville.  That's where I got my teaching degree.

Good morning all,

Went to visit our friend in the extended care home yesterday.  First time we have seen her since she was moved over there.  We had a nice visit and her husband showed up too before we left.  It's a small place and they only care for three patients but seems well run, clean and comfortable.  A nurse came while we were there and checked her vital signs.

No further word yet on our other stroke victim friend.

Running my trains almost daily now with warmer weather here making it comfortable in the garage.  Ran my MTH proto 1 Santa Fe F units yesterday.  They still run good but now and then give out a loud buzzing noise until they get warmed up.  Some kind of electronic grimlin I guess.  I have Lionel, MTH and Williams.  Best runners by far are the Williams.

V8 Vega, with your experience in restoring cars, where would you suggest I get my 96 Honda Accord repainted?  I'm leary of those one day places or places like the former Earl Sheib.

Ray

Hi all!

Still running in stealth mode and little time to post/keep up.

Hope all are well.

I am on track to make it to York in April, but that is still a month and a half away and things seem to change rapidly here.

Have a great day all!

Regards, Roy

Ray........let me open with this admission of fact.  I am pretty anal when it comes to the condition and appearance of the cars I drive.  So right out of the box I have a bias toward the better paint job.

The (former) Earl Scheib and the present Maaco (discount) paint shops are not what I would pick unless I did not excessively care about the finished product (up close).  You get what you pay for.  You spend a little ($300-$500) and that is what you get with one of their advertised paint specials.  It comes down to labor to them.  Any needed or additional body work is usually at your discretion and is ala carte.  They don't do a whole lot of panel and paint prep with their less expensive packages and not enough finish/buffing work after the car is painted to bring up the shine.  And their masking is hit and miss in spots.

I used Maaco (once) back in the early 1970s when I was trying to make one of my $50 "beaters" look halfway decent for a short period of time.  The finish wasn't great out of the box, had dulled appreciably within 6 months, and was falling/chipping off in quarter sized pieces within a year.  Both my son-in-law and his father used Maaco on their cars for some minor collision repairs in the past five years.   And it shows, even my wife can see the difference.  You sight down the side of the car and the finish is dull, especially up against an undamaged panel that was left alone.  And the paint is chipping away on the edges of the hatch of my SIL's SUV.  Then the SIL and his father ask me how I keep my cars looking so good.  Protect the paint and use a better collision shop, but expect to pay for "better."

Your trusted collision/body shop would be my first recommendation for a quality job, but expect to pay $2,000 and up for the whole car repaint......at least that is what I paid when I had my Camaro repainted (no dents or scrapes to be repaired).  But the paint and finish looked factory fresh from the get go, held up very well, and looked new for another 6 years (despite the fact the car was not garaged) until I sold the car.

OEM automobile dealerships also do a credible job also but are usually the high-priced spread.  But they should be able to replicate the quality of the finished product like your collision guy would deliver..

If I had a collectible car (I do) and/or I was going to hang on to a vehicle for a very long time (say 5 more years or more), I would spend the money with my known and trusted collision guy.  That is what I do because I keep and drive my cars to the grave or end of their financially practical and useful life.  The newest car in my fleet is pushing 7 years old.

Good to see you Roy. Smile

Stopped off at the DMV and got my stickers for the wife's car and my bike. I was in and out in 5 min because they were not giving driving test today due to the weather? Hmm

I have been playing out in the snow and BOY,, did I get the Gator stuck in the east ravine. Embarrassed Sure glad I put that winch on her. I had to tie off to two different trees before it got up to where it could pull itself out on it's own.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Laz, like you and Ryan I to have been a scrap yard rat. I worked for Speicher & Gaylords auto wreckers in 1971 and 1972 and in 1996 I partnered with Bill Speicher and Russ Bennett to open up Speicher's truck parts. I have had plenty of time behind the cutting torch. I never had clean fingernails back then. Laugh

Ray,

I agree with Jack about finding a good bodyshop.  I've seen too many cheap resprays to suggest otherwise.  As soon as I read your post, the 93 Probe at the local yard came to mind.  It is the victim of a cheap respray, and between the poor masking, flaking bright orange paint revealing the original Steel Blue Frost beneath, and massive amount of orange peel texture, I feel sorry for it.  A good respray won't be cheap, but you are paying for the painter's experience/skill.

Temp is 35

The slush this morning kept jamming in the blower chute but it was just too heavy for us to move any other way. I should have sprayed it with silicone before I started. My # 2 son is a painter for a local Dodge dealer, good paint is expensive. If you want cheap you will get get cheap. I spent the afternoon goofing off so I will be ready with banilla for the thingy crew. We had a good chat last night...S.J.

evening all not much happening around here back finally feeling better. yesterday a.m. before I went to work I thru a bid on a trains set

But if you look carefully it has a special work caboose

It the version only made in early 1966 it alone is worth more than I paid for whole set and shipping. So I made a good scoop there most over look that caboose but I have found 2 this way in the last 8 years the last one the red shell wouldn't stay on as tab was broke but I still sold it for a fair price. The rest of the stuff is either in good condition to good at best. The engine was customized with a # 9 decal on the nose lol will see how all this works out once I get it in I will decide whats a keep ( the caboose for sure ) and whats a sell.

Have OT tomorrow so a long day tomorrow need to remember to bring my pain and inflammatory pills to take in the afternoon.

won some other items the other night also that I will do some work with as most where weaver including the diesel but its not the drive train version so will see what I will do with it its a nice Burlington SD-40-2 Probably put tmcc in it as it will be a nice addition to my collection. It had QSI board ( proto 1) but that died and was removed it has Williams electronic 6 amp sound board ( hello E-bay I don't like those boards) it has electro couplers but think by MTH so my question is there any difference really in Lionel electro couplers and MTH electro coupler. So can I run them off of Lionel's tmcc board is what I'm asking as I know nothing about MTH electronics.

RT,

What are the specifics on that 6119 caboose compared to the normal version?  I've got one around here somewhere, and I'm curious now.

Regular 6119 has LIONEL printed on the black frame where this has built by LIONEL heatstamped on the red cab. The latest I have ( which are older books) is good $175. ex $250 ( I paid $81 for the whole set including the shipping as he had it listed free shipping) A lot of times if I see a set for sale or bunch of cars I will look carefully at them and break out the books to see if maybe its a rare version in there that there not aware of.

Evening all,

Good to see a lot of the names from when I was regular reader, and your greetings really made me feel good.

Still have custody of the Grandkids aand  they are a true blessing.  They help me stay young.  Bride is as wonderful as ever.  I did finish the bedroom addition.  We moved in last fourth of July.  We bought a different truck and camper.  The truck is a '03 GMC 3500 duramax diesel crew dually, it is really nice, and the camper is an '05 Wildcat 31QBH fifth wheel.  I'm putting an EGT and boost gauge on it now.

Super busy at work with a multi-million dollar project to upgrade the support systems for the final test before DOE authorization for full deployment of the project I've been working on since '05.  Man, it how time flys.  Seems like yesterday I was in Oak Ridge Tn.

Church work has stepped up a notch or two, wher I was assigned to two parishes, I'm now assigned to four and rotate to different parishes for different Masses.  Never a dull moment.

The latest train related stuff is Marx tin plate.  They are neat and I don't think you could break them.  Got a bid on ebay for a set tonight.  You can generally pick up a nice set for under $100.

Good night and may God bless

Konnichiwa,

I’m about to go to work; I am going in late today since the wife had a Japanese-American culture club event this morning.  I spent the morning ensuring the kids did all their schoolwork; the older two are at piano lessons now and the youngest just went down for a nap.  It is sunny outside and not too cool.  I will be busy when I get to the office as I have many tasks to complete today.

Laz – Running on Antarctica would be pretty amazing.  I’m hoping when I’m home this June that I will be able to run the Coal Cracker 10K in Shenandoah.  I’ve never done it before and it seems only right to run it since it’s in my hometown.  I think you and Minnie should run it too.

Doug – Yes, McDonald’s is extremely good at uniformity across its restaurants.  They have strict franchise rules – it clearly works.

Congratulations to those expecting grandsons!

Sayonara,

Joe

Hi GUYZ,

38 here and nice got the PT done and now gonna take my gal for her 5 mile walk to the river and back.  Today got to take wife Kia in for her first oil change.  Then come back and work some on the layout.

JOE D, WIFE is from Mahanoy City and ran the COALCRACKER 10k and I think won her age bracket, a few years ago.  I don't know if they allow dogs to run?  But, MINNIE and I ran a trail run last fall here in Millersburg, The NED SMITH Conservation Run.  Just a 5k and I started us out dead last.  Letting all the other dogs and runners get at least a 150 yard lead, fore I didn't know how she would react to the other dogs.  When we finally started she tore out like shot in the butt.  Before long we were passing everyone going back and forth along the road till we hit the trails.  Had to stop for a dump, not me but MINNIE, then around a few trees, stopped for a drink in the creek, then onward to the finish.  We finished second out of 30 dogs and runners.  Coulda won but I didn't know how she would do with the other dogs.  Oh well not to bad for the day maybe this year we'll start in the front of the pack?

Stay frosty my friends,

Good morning all,

It is snowy in SE Indiana.  Took my time and still made it ontime to work.  Last night I came home, slept until 6:30, ate leftovers, watched two episodes of MASH, watched "Arrow", checked emails on PC, went to bed.  Could be an interesting day at work.  TBIL anytime tonight and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

32 degrees with light snow. Maybe picked up an inch more on the North Bluff.

This story should bring the Chief much Joy!!

Yesterday afternoon I found out something I did not know about the new Silverado. I went up to the mailbox to take it off of the post so I could fix the door hinge. Anyway I pulled off to the side of the street, put on the 4 way flashers, shut off the truck, left the keys in the ignition and walked to the mailbox. (NEVER DO THIS) Surprise  I was taking the screws out that hold the mailbox to the post and the truck horn honks once??? Hmm  What??  Confused   I walk over to the truck and it has locked itself. Bang Head   Bang Head   Oops - Sign   Well as some of you know our driveway is ½ mile long. It is cold and I don’t have my heavy winter gear on.  Tongue Tied  Well anyway I got a nice one-mile walk in that I had not planned on by the time I got back to the house for the extra set of keys.   Sad  BTW I did braze a flat washer to the mailbox door and got it fixed. Good morning. It's 39° with 65% humidity. It'll be sunny with a high of 58°.

The plan for today is to clean up the layout. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen. I hope to get out later today when it's warmer. There's some light outdoor work that needs to be done and I need to do general preventive maintenance on my van.

Aloha. Grey and hopefully warmer. Speaking of warmer, that's what's happening to the inside of our two-year old fridge. There's nothing really to check too on these sealed units. Ah well. Gotta call someone. Nice to check in with the TARDIS crew last night, whilst trying to figure out Minecraft mods.

Kev, I am always fearful of that happening in my wife's car. It is full of magic bells and whistles that seem to work by themselves. One time I set off some kind of alarm by dropping the key fob. Of course, I couldn't figure out how to turn it off. I'm always opening the windows instead of the door locks. Smile

JimFish, that's a nice Fifth Wheel. They really have you jumping as a Deacon  Looking forward to hearing good news about your project.

Temp is 35, but a colder weekend is coming.

I couldn't wait till tomorrow, changed the calenders to March 1st this morning. Starting tomorrow no more complaints about winter from me. Granny fixed me eggs, hash browns and 1 toast for breakfast. We gotta keep that other forum informed of what we eat as they do seemed interested in that. A nice chat with some of the guys last night..S.J.

EDIT: RT we may need you to put on some fresh coffee at midnight, you know how all that popcorn puts the chief to sleep.
