Mornin' boys.  Sunny & 41 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Crocuses are in full bloom, which usually spells the end of winter.  Not counting my chickens, but still nice to see.  Gets me thinking of spring commissioning Pirate.

For the record (and read my past posts), not badmouthing Ms Patrick, just the media coverage.  The #51, #98 and #36 (all small teams w/ little funding) also finished in the top 10 (which to me, was cool).  Best part of attending any race, is not having to listen to what the network feeds us.  Just the engines, the flyovers (for now...), the National Anthem, the invocation, the crowd, and the occasional fender wrinkle.  I can't get MRN on the radio here for some reason, or I would turn down FOX.

Mornin' Fellas

Yes I am still alive, if that is what you call my current state of existance. I've been sleep deprived before, but this is INSANE... even the US Army gives you 4 hours of continuous sleep... but not Matthew!

Saw the latest Lionel RTR catalog. Some interesting stuff, esp the Remote James, Percy, and Diesel. I may get Matthew the Percy or Diesel set and get one each of the other engines. Have to think on it. Smile

Hi guys running late. Sunny and low 30s on the North Bluff today.

I just put my first item for sale on E-bay……….I hope I did it right. It is a carb from that 1927 Briggs and Stratton FH engine. If it works out I may list some other stuff I have. I have also listed my 1975 triumph for sale on Triples on-line. We shall see if it sells.

Thanks John, I knew I was confused.  Confused

I will give Danica credit for finishing the race and staying out of trouble. Any other eighth place finisher would not get an interview thou. it don’t look like there will be any passing on the super speedways with this Gen 6 car. What makes me maddest is the guys that go and run around a few laps then head to the garage and just cash the show up money check. E.g. Back row Joe Nemechek. Angry What is NASCAR Thinking??? Enough said. Dots - Sign

Fife, you are right FOX kills it for me too. Commercial overload at the least. It is to bad you can’t get MRN, I listen to it a lot and you don’t have to be watching the race to have a good time. Some times I will be working in the shed and just go in the house to see a replay of something that sounds good.

Brent,, get some sleep. Zzz

I was talking to the wife about the new grandson and she mentioned that she has never been around a baby boy. I told her there is nothing to it ,you just need to know how to take cover when changing the dippers  Wink

John, I feel bad for it, but it appears that what ever happened to it, has healed that way.  It seems to hoble around ok, I'll give it some time, fortunatly, its not bleeding all over the porch.  Which was a concern.

Kev - like a three letter word we aren't allowed to talk about here I get it when I can get it and when it is given to me! Surprise

Got my TCA Membership renewed and York Meet Badge ordered over the weekend... I was reminded by TheQ which was a surprise. Guess she feels I need some 'me' time since she will be getting quite a bit over the next month or so with all her commitments. Was nice to hear. Smile

sir james I
Temp is 34 with full sun. Everything changes tomorrow depending on whether we get more rain than snow. Out this morning to pay house and car insurance. Stopped at Walgreen's for milk and now you have to have another stupid card to carry around if you want the sale price. Idiots. That's my morning so far...S.J.

SJ.........I don't think you have to carry their customer loyalty "card" or have one of their mini cards that fit on your car key ring.  If you signed up with them, just give them your phone number when checking out and they usually can give you your discount and sale prices that way.  At least out my way that is how it works.  Drug stores, grocery stores, pet stores, hardware stores, home improvement stores, the Hallmark store, etc.

Yes I am still alive, if that is what you call my current state of existance. I've been sleep deprived before, but this is INSANE... even the US Army gives you 4 hours of continuous sleep... but not Matthew!

Brent.......yup!!!!  Kids are a younger man's game.  Better you than me. Thumbs UpLaugh

I still don't know how I and my wife twice survived the sleep deprivation game, or how we didn't kill each other during those sleep-deprived years.  At least until we could manage to get the little ones through the night with maybe just one or two temporary interruptions.  I am fairly certain I didn't share a beer with each of them before bedtime. But I pobably should have until they were sleeping through the night on their own. Whistling

Then when you are a grandparent and have the grandkids stay overnight, you quickly discover to your utter dismay at 3 in the morning that your daughter and son-in-law had been letting the then 2 year old get up in the middle of the night and crawl into bed with them, or refuse to go back to sleep in their own bed!!!.  Bang Head  Or you discover that when the kiddies are over for the day and hit the wall at, say, at 3PM and turn into little monsters that said daughter and son-in-law had somehow in their minds decided naps were not needed.  And the little ones start to fight you over it!!!!!!  "Mommy and Daddy don't make me take a nap."

Of course, the little ones quickly lose that battle:  "Grammy and Grampy's rules supercede all other rules in THIS house.  Period!!!  Get to bed!!!!"  It amazes me how some parents try to rationalize matters with a 9 year old or a 3 year old.  It can't be done!!!

My wife is fairly even-tempered and doesn't lose her cool too often.  But when she doesn't get her sleep, watch out.  Following one miserable sleepless overnight with the grandkids about two years back my very tired wife had a serious discussion with the daughter.  She told the daughter in no uncertain terms that if she wanted the kids to spend the night over here again that she had better straighten out a few parental bad habits, that the little ones must sleep in their own beds, must stay there, and they must take naps.

At the very front end of that exchange I heard my wife incredulously exclaim in an angered, raised tone of voice something like "What the H do you mean she sleeps in bed with you and doesn't take naps?!?!?  Is THIS how I raised you?!???"

I wisely stayed out of that discussion, and out of the room.  The wife was on fire and I had all I could handle muffling my laughter!!!! Whistling

Jack - When we were in FL Christina had to sleep with us - good thing we got a king sized bed because Christina took up 1/2 of it! When we got back to MD she fought us tooth and nail to sleep in our bed, but she lost each battle... that was till last night... neither TheQ nor I had the energy/willpower/wherewithall to do anything than pick her up and plop her in bed with us. Hopefully that will not happen tonight!

My parents were down this past weekend and I was very pleased that they backed TheQ and I on all fronts. It amazes me that at 18mo Christina has already learned the art of playing one adult against another... REALLY!!!!!! Unfortunately she hasn't learned that Mommy and Daddy share the same beliefs... no you cannot have a chocolate chip cookie 5 minutes before bedtime, no you cannot have a piece of candy 1 hour before bedtime, no you cannot have sugar infused drinks 1.5 hours before bed time... but she tries... oh and those flop on the floor and scream your head off tantrums... nope we don't recognize those either.

Let me try this again,

Not being a race car fan I can honestly say, Danica who?  Gentlemen I just got a news flash, women in heretofore male only jobs are here to stay.  However, I sympathize with Fife and Pat re over kill on an also ran.

New March issue of Trains Magazine was a good one for me.  It had an article about some of the territory I used to work in when I was with the Southern Pacific, now Union Pacific Railroad.  Its about the area below sea level down by the Salton Sea in California.  They also showed a picture of a sign  on a siding named after a conductor friend of mine who died of a heart attack at this location while working on his train.  I was on a following train right behind him. I, along with his other friends errected this station sign a few months after his death.  The railroad changed the name of the siding to "Rogoza" and that name is now in the employee timetable.

The magazine also had a nice railroad map of the area where I grew up (Portsmouth, Va.) from 1954 and another one showing the way it looks now.

Lastly, there was an article about the revived steam excusions on the Norfolk Southern Railway.  I saw on another souce that they might run the 611 class J locomotive again if they can get enough private money to make it ready.  NS was sympathetic.

later,

Ray

Good evening.

Got a good start on that P-38 model. It turns out that the reason it seemed like that the paint wasn't drying was that it had a dusty film. I then decided to buff it with a t-shirt, and WOW did it start to shine!!!! The paint looks like it belongs on the P-51D Mustang or the ATSF's Super Chief cars.

Getting late, night everyone.

Cloudy today and started out about 40 degrees.  Falling temps. all day, wind out of the north east, storm arriving from the south.  Snow started falling about 8:30.   Supposed to start in earnest a little after midnight and keep going until tomorrow afternoon.  Prediction is for 12" to 15".  It's that wet heavy stuff too.

Fair warning.  Airplane trivia ahead.  Stop reading here if you are not interested.

The P-38 was one of the first airplanes that compressability became a factor in the aerodynamics.  It was fast enough in a dive that the wing would make a wake that messed up the airflow around the stablilizer and elevator bad enough that the elevator would not work.  The fix was to change the angle of the tail assembly by a few degrees and to add some flap like surfaces between the pilot nacell and the tail booms.  These fixes were put into production very rapidly.  They never re-developed the sheet metal pattern for the tail to match the angle change.  One joint ahead of the tail assembly in the booms looks like it is miss-aligned.  I didn't believe that story until I checked it out on the P-38 that is on display in the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Oh.

All for now.

Konbanwa,

I survived the marathon; thanks for all the support.  I did not do as well as I hoped but I finished.  The wind was crazy on race day and only grew stronger as the day progressed.  By the time I was two hours into the race, the winds were sustaining 30 mph and gusting around 35 mph.  I didn’t mind the cold temps but the wind and unexpected inclines broke me down.  Another factor that affected me was the amount of people stopping to take photographs.  I suppose 20 years ago this would not have been an issue, but today everyone has some nifty smartphone and it is easy to do.  However, stopping during the race to take a photograph is pretty dumb in my opinion.  I literally had to sidestep people at some of the big Tokyo attractions which took its toll on my legs around the 19.75 mile mark.  At that point I had to start walking and only jogged again intermittently.  It took me roughly 5 hours and 35 minutes to finish but the official has not been posted yet.  All in all it was a great experience: a neat way to see Tokyo with 37,000 other people.  I’ll run another marathon sometime next year and I’m glad I was able to do this one.

The rest of our time in Tokyo was enjoyable as well.  However, the day before the marathon I spent too much time walking around malls with the older son.  He wanted to visit a Lego store and I also spotted a Kripy Kreme donut shop, which I couldn’t avoid.  This excessive walking was a poor idea considering I planned to run 26.2 miles the next day.  Oh well, that’s a good lesson learned.  But those donuts were sure worth it.

I briefly the read the posts from the past few days and it appears all is well.  I don’t follow NASCAR or the Oscars do I have no input on those topics.

Sayonara,

Joe

Trains.com was acting up so bad this morning, Monday that I gave up on it and figured I would try tonight. No one else mentioned it. Maybe that;s why SPRay lost his post.

I haven't been having any problems with the site, certainly none that I've noticed and I was on just about all day.

Didn't the fighter get to near supersonic speed in a dive?

Good morning every one.

No three and half legged cat last night, but was visited by a large fury SKUNK.

JOE: its funny how, that in another country, things like Krispy Kreme doughnuts and McDonalds are a savored treat, when in the USofA, those places are just another notch in our daily routine.  And yet, as Americans, we ALL complain about how bad McDonalds is, yet we continue to go there?!

I personally try to avoid them, but in the daily hussle and bussle, sometimes its Mcdonalds or no lunch at all, so I'm left to choose fast food over nothing

gotta run

Didn't the fighter get to near supersonic speed in a dive?

Maximum reported dive speed of the P-38 in an isolated incident was nearly 600 mph but this was an extreme exception that was never repeated. Maximum operational speed was 390 mph.
