Laz,
Spent some time yesterday taking pictures of the Christmas layout.
lionroar88Jack - TheQ and I have really been thinking it through, and we aren't sure what we are going to do as far as flying down vs driving when the birth takes place. We have no choice for next Wednesday it is a 2.5 hour flight vs 16 hour drive... no brainer. As for when the birth happens, we just aren't sure. I guess it depends on when the call comes in. We were called at noon when Christina was born and we didn't make it down there till almost 3am, so we could have driven it just as fast - the issue was the 5 hour delay at BWI!!!!If we can drive it I think that is the route we will take as it will be a considerable cost savings... but who knows... we'll cross the bridge when we get there.
Hi Brent......I sat down and calculated the time factor flying versus driving, once upon a time. With flying you have to pack the car, drive to the airport, drop off the wife and little one(s) at the curb, get a cart, load it, then leave to go park the car, get back to the terminal, check the baggage (and car seat), of course be there well in advance of the flight, check thru security, drag wife out of the shops, a bite to eat then intercedes, check in at the gate, wait some more, then board. Only then does that 2.5 hour flight begin......if it departs on time. At the landing end of things a whole reverse process starts whereby you have to retrieve your baggage, drag it all out to the curb, get to the car rental place, etc. I figured that the 2.5 hour flight and all of the before and after activities add up to about a good 8-9 hours plus whatever value you want to place on stress.

Good evening all,
And a better evening than the last one for sure, for sure as some sort of intestinal issue kept me perched on the throne for most of the evening. Stayed home from work today, but will go in tomorrow. TBIL, but someone else will have to drive. Welcome to the pot, Prarietype, and to others I may have missed. This is a good place to hang out and discuss important topics such as soccer, Corvairs, and occasionally trains. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,

Gone north to lake house. Cold worse. Hope to ride it out inside up there. Yuall behave.

It was really cold in Rogers Corners this morning but we are tougher than those 50 degree wimps from Roseyville. I suppose the Chief is sitting on his porch tonight sipping an adult beverage and trying to cool off from the heat.
Speaking of trains, the Wall Street Journel stated that we are going to see a couple of billion dollars of construction for new rail facilities to handle Blueberry's oil in Eastern Ohio. Has he told you that Blueberry Hill is in the middle of a huge oil and gas play? Oops..
Going to warm up this weekend, so I'm going to beach.

Good Evening guys!
After reading all of the temp readings today, I guess that I will have to say that it is cold enough to make the P in the Post Toasties.
Started reading the Pot when I was waiting for Mom at the hospital for her treatment. Mike C is right, we talk about everything and occasionally trains, but I enjoy it all! THANKS
RT: Prayers for your friend. You were there for him!
Kev/SJ/AF53: Layouts and Articles. SJ: I like the answer that yours is too much of a 1950's layout. Kev: yours is too nice and you did it yourself. AF53: Ray, we have too much fun with ours. I do not care what is protypical, exact scale or what. I do what I want because it is my layout.
Joe Demay: If are allowed to receice Kielbasa, I will send you a couple of rings from the German Butcher. They are great. Just like the ones from the Polish Butchers where I grew up. Let me know. Those that are available from you are OK, but......
Brutus: Way to go with your son!
Bo, I agree with you on retirement! I went out with a "BANG". I retireed a month after Superstorm Sandy! I worked for an Electric and Gas Company! I retired November 30. I am being kept busy taking mom for her daily Cancer treatments. They will be ending soon. It is a 150+ mile round trip that I do not mind.
Ryan: Congrats on 2 fronts: 1. the article, good luck with the business, 2. The layout progress!
Prairetype: Congrats on your retirement!
Pat: LOL: Prime and CURED!!!!
Bob: An all CORVAIR LAYOUT!!! Hope that it is summer year long! Just kidding. That would be cool!
Jack: I am going to check out Dinkles and order some for my wife. thanks! I am sure that Rich's next ride will be a MOPAR. Your Alcos may not be perfect, but you do enjoy them.
V8: Congrats on the Alco purchase!
V8/Kev: I agree with you on Hot Rod Magazine. That is why I do not subscribe anymore, or even read it!
Jack/Jim: If we meet up at York maybe we can go 736 Berk hunting and flush a few out!
Everyone: Enjoy the Evening!
John
Every one,
Thanks for the congrats on the article
I revived my original build thread and posted some updated pics there

Night people!
Well the laptop says it's 33, if it is that's the warmest it's been in about a week. Walmart took up most of our morning but the afternoon was routine. I wanted to finish CTT but never got to it. I guess I get to drive tonight so don't drink too much I'm tired of cleaning up after a few loop-D-loops. Banilla will be waiting...S.J.

RI512 - Thought you were a Nawthenur. When you wrote about pasties, I thought you were meaning the pie crust wrapped meat pie type delicacies that are commonly available in Northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. We used to stop by Leto's roadside pasty stand on US-2 just west of the Mackinac bridge on the north shore of Lake Michigan to get our fix of this treat. I've not made it that far north in a long time, though.
All for now

Answer: "You assigned 4 life-or-death, must-happen priorities at the beginning of the year with barely enough resources to git er done.....and then you piled on an additional 4 life-or-death priorities as the year progressed while still failing to approve any funding of the required resources to get them all done."
I've worked in places like that...best thing? No resources to speak of...or time...
A relatively nippy 13 deg F on the mountain tonight. Also, 94% humidity so we are closed due to frost accumulation right now. Hopefully we will be able to open up later.
Still working on getting over this cold.
Jack - most of the guys can switch their phones from their provider to wifi. Those that have limits on time prefer the wifi so as not to get the extra charge. I just downgraded my phone to talk/text only. The basic internet I tried out for a month was so slow I could walk down to the library and look something up in less time. If I can get on w/ the laptop at the house to check email and the forum, I'd be happy. However, I'd be just as happy to have an excuse to ride the bicycle down to the coffee shop and have a decent cup of coffee.
V8 - nice find on those Alcos! Nothings better than an Alco!
HudsonJohn - funny you mentioned the Corvair "heating". The lower shrouds are still off from when we replaced the pushrod seals over the summer. A lot of the guys leave 'em off during the summer so the engine cools better as well. Both shrouds and thermostats have been in my locker up here since I moved waiting for me to clean and re-install them. On New Years Eve I was driving across town and could see my breath IN the car. The blower fan also doesn't turn on. Since I got the car in the spring I wasn't worried about it much, until now. Plus there were plenty of other priorities on the car. Did I mentioned that the windshield leaks a bit? As the old seals contract and dry out they will leave gaps, so for a few days after a rain I get condensation on the INSIDE of the windows She is getting there though, as time, money, and schedule allow.
PrairieType - congrats on retirement! There is a 2-6-2 on display in La Junta, CO that I saw on the train ride this past summer. I am somewhat partial to them since my first PW steamer was an early 2026.
Kev - the docksider is an interesting design, although I doubt you will see much of it on the Lionel's best puller thread The motor seems almost like an afterthought.
Off to check on the frost.

Good morning.
Cold again this morning, though to warm up to about 45 during the weekend. Nice change. The radar is saying that we are supposed to have a clear week.
Bob: It's nice to know someone else appreciates those little 2026's. I have two of those; one was rebuilt from a junker into a fine running locomotive. I took the approach outlined in several CTT articles about touching up paint, tuning, ect. It really does work. The junker was a donation to the mall layout we work on. I'm the repair maintenance guy, and really the only one who know how to work on it; and I'm no expert. However, the 2026 became a project. It was chipped, missing the pilot and light assembly, some side rod pieces and drive wheel. The drive wheel seemed to have been wrenched off with vice grips and was missing. The axle was bent and the splines mangled. Even so, the engine was running sharp and smooth. So, the choice was attempt a fix or through away or salvage parts. I decided to rebuild it, and the club gave it to me.
I'll post some before and after photos of the project in the near future.
I do like the Prairietypes. When I picked up a 2035 Prairietype "Adriatic" a few years back, I switched out the stamped 4 wheel trailing turck for diecast 2 wheel trailing truck. Just recently, I put it back to original after getting both 2026s running well.
There are Santa Fe Prairietypes all over Kansas Oklahoma, Texas and Coloradoand points west and aouth. Kansas has a particularly large concentration of them in Wellington, Newton, Independence, Emporia, Dodge City, and closest to me, Lawrence. I've seen the LaJunta 2-6-2 from the window of the South west Chief. Is there also one in Lamar? I think I've seen one in a park near the tracks.
I like a Prairietype locomotive because of its wheel arrangement and medium size, imagining it doing freight and occasional passenger service with 3-4 coaches between snall towns on the prairie in the early 20th century, a golden age.
There are also a number of ATSF Pacifics, and Consolidations in city parks in Kansas. ATSF 3415, a beautiful Pacific was restored in just four year's time and is now running on old Rock Island tracks east between Abiline and Enterprise, Kansas. It is a classic Pacific and very impressive. And then there is that one surviving Hudson in Topeka that I guess is still headed to Minnesota to become a biofuel experiment.
Well, it is beginning to get light now, Time to plan the day.
Good Morning
Weather here is just the same as ever...dull and ccold...and snowy....high of 30F expected...low of 25F.......like to see some sun on occasion....

Good Morning!
Spent the night at Mom's. This morning she informs me that the cold water valve for the washer is leaking. She is starting to panic. All that had to be done is to tighten the packing. Fixed in 2 minutes. If only life was this easy.
Getting ready to leave for her radiation treatment. then it is heading home after a stop at an ice cream supplier in Edison. A stones throw from the old garage. Definitely not stopping in. Then it is home and continue the cleanup from Sandy. A lot of wood to be cut and split before I even get to the garage. The bulk of the brush is out of the yard and disposed of.
Everyone enjoy the day!
SubmmBob,
Heat and Corvairs: I had a Father and Son Team in my Auto Body class who restore, collect and drive Corvairs. They also belong to a Club. During class one night, somone mentioned the optional gasoline powered heater that was available for the cars. The father started laughing and said that the gas heater used more gas than the engine. During the 1974 gas shortage he did not use it at all. The shourding on the corvair that he had was rusted out and he remembers "fondly" scrapping the inside of the windows so that he could see.
Sunny and bright but cold, only about 17 degrees. The Gray Squirrels are having a party under the bird feeder.
Shopping today for food. Nothing else in the works.
Have a good day

JACK, we picked up a neoprene coat for MINNIE at Cabelas. It's made for waterdogs and has a nice camo design on it. Took MINNIE some time to get use to it but now she is. Still takes time to put it on her but she doesn't mind it now. The coat is an AVERY one that can be cut to fit. Here it is

Good morning. It's a nice balmy 40° with 81% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a small chance of rain. The high will be a blazing 50°.Nothing much planned for today. Work on the layout, watch some TV, wonder what those in better circumstances are doing. In other words pretty much a normal day.
We finally have some sunshine at 29 degrees.
A good long chat with Brutus and Charlie last night. Granny is out with daughter and the boys. Breakfast of oatmeal and grapefruit. The end.

Jack, I'll let you in front of me in the line for RT buying us 736s. Maybe the Chief willl give anyone who moves to NC a 773 Hudson?
JimmyT........when you first posted your "5 trains under the tree setup," I showed it to my wife. Now she knows there are guys far crazier and more addicted to the trains than I am. Thank you for that!!!
I am certain RT will buy us a both the 736s and 773s as presents because that is the type of great guy he is. The Chief won't be of any help to us unless an engine has NS plastered all over it.....
I don't how much more publicity I can take. the front Page headlines about e waste recycling and my company was interesting and good.
Today I get a call from our district Senator's office, and they want to come do a 30 minute TV show about e waste recycling and film it all at my facility. it will Air in March 2013 on the PCN (Pennsylvania Cable Network)
