Back up at work. A brisk 20 deg F out there right now. We are open for business. Still getting over my cold, but much better than I was a couple days ago.

Speaking of which, I guess I can add January and February to the missing issues list along w/ December. Either someone in the postal system has taken a liking to them or the magazine staff is miffed I didn't renew my subscription. Changed my address right away when I moved, so who knows

Dug the Lionel 4060 transformer out of storage and was surprised to find it puts out only 15A, compared to the unit that came w/ the Amtrak Lionel set @ 25A. I bought this around 1988 - 1990 when I was in college and paid a whopping $64.99 from a local train store that is no longer in business. Since I still have the original instructions and box I may try putting this puppy on the bay just to see what happens. Was made in Mt. Clemens, MI unlike the one w/ the 1995 set that was made in China. In the meantime I will keep looking for a Marx 1049.

The roomates did some sleuthing w/ their smart phones this afternoon before I went to work. Turns out our unit is pretty much a dead zone on the property for the current wifi units. We are looking into getting a booster for our unit, so I may not have to go down to the coffee shop to get internet.

Good morning all.  Got up a little early this morning as I have some things I need to get done.

laz57 - You're right this is a pretty chatty group.  I was away for aday and it took me awhile to get caught up.

Jack - Yes, I'm good with the teasing.  I've been known to do a little bit of it myself.  Can't fault the Chief for liking grits though, it's a breakfast staple at my home as well.  Grits, Oh so good!  Now I'm hungry!

Going to get some work done on the railroad today.  Have to order some relays for some MTH signals that need to be installed.  I'm using the "isolated rail" approach for train detection and it seems to work pretty well.

Retirement has proven to be a good thing.  Let's me do the things I seldom had time for before retirement. Highly recommended when you are ready.  Bo

KRM, I don't see anything wrong with your layout.  I think I know which other one your talking about, and I have posted a build thread over there and it seems as soon as they saw it was tubular track, and that I didnt use some $5000.00 track design software, andthe fact that I was a "moron" for not even having a track plan  the resposes to my posts stoped and nd the thread got buried. I really don't care for most of that forum, as I don't think they care about us over here. Stupid rivit counters!

  12 here tis morning.  Got all the PT done now for long walk down to river with WIFE and MINNIE.  Gonna be cold.  Then going out again for deer with Flintlock.  Didn'r see any yesterday saw a bunch o pheasants in the corn field but they went out in December. 

JACK, MINNIE set a record this morning too.  She was beating feet to get on home after doing her business.

SUBMMBOB, nice CORVAIR!  I got that one in red and also have the Franklin mint one with the 4 door hard top.  The doors open on that one and got it at a rediculously low price of $5.00.

JOEY D, MIL told me at KOVOLONICs the line streched all the way around the block 2 days before Christmas.  Wonder how much  kielbasie, they sold?

There were two resolutions that I came up with in recent months. One has already been accomplished. I announced to family that I plan to retire sometime in 2013.  Then I followed that up by telling everyone that my last day at work was December 28th, and officially, today is my second day of retirement. 

The other resolution is to join the Coffee Pot discussion more actively.  It has always been a challenge to chime in when others are active on the forum. Most of the time it was in a hurry.

So, here I am. It's a bright sunny and moderately cold morning in Kansas City.  I've already had my coffee and worked on a few retirement list items.  A little later I'll go to the Great Mall of the Great Plains where I help with the maintaining of the Lionel layout that is part of a consortium of layouts in several scales; O, HO, N, G, and "Thomas."  These are installations in two large storefronts directly across from each other.

I plan to switch out 1-of-3 KWs and replace that with our ZW. This is part of a rewiring effort that will allow us to decommission two RWs and simplify operations.

Another thing I resolve to do is to re-learn how to post pictures and videos in the threads. It's been a while, and now I have some quality time to do this.

Looking forward to all of it.

Good morning. It's 37° with 97% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a high of 52°. North wind coming off the lake will make it feel colder.


Now that my food stamp card is reloaded I can do the remainder of the grocery shopping today. I have a tremendous budget of $45 to work with. I also need to get a couple of cans of engine restore for the vans engine. That quiets those old valve trains down nicely. Paper towels are also on the procurement list. Later I may be able to get some cleanup work done on the layout. That depends on if someone has made plans for my day that I don't know about.

To post pictures you need a photo storage account somewhere like Flickr or Paint Bucket (its free). Then put the address of the picture between  brackets [] with img in the bracket before the address and a [] with /img in it at the end or the address. A wild explanation, but to lay it out simply it wont print. OK RT?

 I really don't care about the picture thing. They contacted me first so I thought they may want something. Just that you have to have a professional photograph shoot your layout to get it in is ridicules. I think if the truth be know maybe he just did not like the picture content. Chief's buck the Hobos shot was bleeding out on the hanging post in the picture of the Hobo camp. But heck, I thought all cheese-heads were into deer hunting. Guess not. At least now I know not to try. Bet this gets hacked.  I will stick with SPF.

Prairietype. retirement is a good thing. Join the fun. For pictures I use Shutterfly. Just open the picture in Shutterfly and right click copy and just paste it into the forum text. Lots of other ways to.

Good Mornin' Again From Frigid Cape Ann,

So last night I was going to start looking into why my 2046 was stuttering in cold start-ups.  Apparently the extensive running New Years Eve must have had beneficial effects because it started right up in both forward and reverse without missing a beat.  Must have needed to get in some work after a year layoff. 

It is about that time of year when some of us need to start harassing each other about whose NFL team is going to take the next game, win or go home.  The Sports Illustrated Power Rankings have my adopted New England Patriots (da Bears saddened me again) ranked #2 overall and they have a bye in the first round to heal up.  Looking promising.  The PATS have lost 4 games this season by a total of 11 points, and three of the teams are in the playoffs.  The team that has me most worried: Fife's Ravens with Ray Lewis back.

HudsonJohn.....my prayers continue for your Mom's progress.  Hope she doesn't get too discouraged in the short run.  Re the 2046 Hudson, mine is the 3 window cab version from 1950.  It is the most prodigious hauler I have in my modest stable since I don't have any dual-motored engines.

Chief.........don't let that sinus and cold thingy get out of control.  Besides, your Doc would rather see you now rather than later.  On a more selfish level, we need you at your best.  You don't want us holding back or feeling guilty about teasing you when you are under the weather.  Re the cold up here, I tried to send some down your way but all of that hot air coming out of Rolesville kept pushing it back Nawth. 

RT.......there is a special place upstairs for folks like you who choose a career helping those who cannot help themselves.  Prayers for yet another veteran who was blessed to have had you in their life.    

Chuck.........at 8 degrees, are you wearing your long underwear?  Single digits for you may be more common than for me.  Even though my place is farther North than you lattitude-wise, the ocean usually keeps my Winter temperatures moderated.  LAZ.....wifey wants me to put Maximus' coat on him when I take him out.  He has hair, not fur, so he has no natural protection against the elements.  Plus I have to be careful not having him out too long in these lower temps.  His ear tips can get frostbitten in single digit temperatures inside of 5 minutes or so.   

SJ.......like you, my furnace has been running quite a bit with this cold snap.  I find it amusing that after all of these years my wife still asks me why the furnace is running so much.  Women don't care much about these things, as long as they are warm.  Hope you and Charlie can get in some more train time at the club.  I really enjoy the videos.  Like Granny, my wife last night briefly took one look at the mammoth task of putting away the Christmas decorations.  I was able to talk her out of it by taking out a box of Dinkel's chocolate chip cookies and suggesting she work on those instead.  DougM and KEV.....Dinkels is a family run bakery business over many generations and is located on the North side of Chicago; and my wife has enjoyed their cookies for over 50 years.  Bought her 2 pounds over the net as a surprise for Christmas.   

BOC.......I had to laugh at your challenge, the dreaded year-end summary presentation for your company.  Ironically, the mucky mucks don't pay much attention to these things unless or until their year end bonus is on the line.  And if their bonus IS at risk, they act surprised and demand to know what went South.  Answer:  "You assigned 4 life-or-death, must-happen priorities at the beginning of the year with barely enough resources to git er done.....and then you piled on an additional 4 life-or-death priorities as the year progressed while still failing to approve any funding of the required resources to get them all done."

Ryan......thank you for the link to the media article on your company's electronics domestic recycling business, interesting stuff.  I find it so frustrating to see what happens when government oversight and regulation gets involved in a critical need with a sound objective and so much upside potential:  meltdown.  My city is struggling with this type of recycling (and all recycling).  They put mechanisms, rules, and regs in place to make certain that the opposite happens.  With electronics disposal. for example, we have to pay $20 per item to get a sticker for curbside pickup or dropoff.  So folks just load up their car, go for a drive, and toss the stuff by the roadside at an inconspicuous place.  Government is so short-sighted in such matters, focusing on the 5% (risks and valid concerns) while losing sight of the 95% improvement/benefit.  

KEV........you don't need a magazine article to validate what a fine layout you have built.  The rest of us here admire and respect what you have created and enjoy.

BO........as time goes on you may cringe less and less at what is exchanged here on the POT.  This teasing is all meant in jest to produce smiles and laughter but in the short run may seem over the top.  When I first joined this group back in 2007, and as a "Nawthener," the Chief was somewhat "merciless" on me.  Since I didn't know him from Adam, I was taken aback somewhat until I realized that he good naturedly picked on everyone North of the Mason Dixon line.

SubmmBob.......those signal boosters for cell reception will do the trick provided that the one selected will accomodate the services and protocols of your gang's varying providers and phones.

8N.......Winter is a great time of year when beer, bottled water, and soft drinks don't need a refrigerator to stay cold.  Just a garage.  This stuff if left in one's car is another matter, and you got lucky on that one!!!  The inside of my car one time took the brunt of my daughter leaving a couple of cases of soda in my car overnight.  They all burst, every single one of them.  Apparently she was not paying attention in Physics class.  

BRUTUS......loved your story about your son's "selective memory" about his homework responsibilities over the Christmas break.  It disappointed me when this stuff happened with my own kids, and it isn't much different now with my granddaughter whom I tutor one day a week.  Our kids must think we are either stupid or senile, or that we will let it slide.  NOPE!!!  TODAY IS JUST LIKE YESTERDAY!!!  Dropping the hammer works, and the KIDS love us all the more for the consequence, lessons learned, and the comfort that unyeilding consistency and guidance provide.  My daughter and son-in-law act surprised that my discipline and expectations only draw my granddaughter that much  closer to me, the same with the three year old who is learning that she doesn't have me totally wrapped around her little manipulative finger.  Everything is clear, fair, and as consistent as the sun rising in the East.  From such things character, sound decision-making,  and work ethic is built.

Jeffrey......I had a couple of cars where the gas gauge played tricks on me or was outright dead.  I would play the refueling game based on mileage since the last fillup and my known MPG.  Never ran out.  You can never have too much gas in the tank.

JoeyD........thank you for pointing out my typo.  "Pasties" rather than the intended "pastries."  Now you know where my mind wanders when I am typing.

Brent........as with your Christina, my wife and I get caught in the same dilemma when we ponder travel by air with the grandkids to visit the great grandparents back in Chicago.  In the past few years we have opted to drive rather than putting up with all of the hassles of flying.  At the end of the day, sometimes it isn't that much longer to drive it.  We can stop when we want.  We don't have to worry about how much junk we take with us. WE make the schedule.  The kiddies have a DVD player and headphones to keep them entertained en route. And we have a vehicle when we get there.  Flying to Chicago from here (1,042 miles) door-to-door takes about 9 hours versus about 16 driving.

Lehigh.......you ALMOST have me motivated to start working on some of my own freight cars.  I think I will procrastinate until the thought passes.

Rich.......so what wheels have you selected now that the Neon is history?  I may have missed that one.

Gotta run and check an outdoor silcock to make sure I shut off the water and drained it.  I had them all shut down for the Winter but cannot recall if I didn't turn one back on when cleaning off deck furniture before I stowed it for the Winter.

Mornin All.

Frost on the pumpkin this morning. Cold to me but it sure beats the single digit temps up in Jack's area.

Spent part of yesterday trying to rid my two MTH engines of their gremlins. What a pain in the posterior just to replace traction tires on the Dash-8. The other was somewhat more perplexing initially, after several failed attempts at remedying the problem I finally discovered the plug for the battery had one of it's pins backing out. More than likely causing intermittent contact, took care of that and a good wheel cleaning seems to have it running smooth again.

The munchkin was here earlier in the week and had a cold so guess who has it now.

I did find a couple of Corvairs that I am debating on picking up for the club layout, the price seemed quite reasonable.That is one of the few models that are not represented on the layout.

Now I need to start figuring out what I will take to the museum tomorrow.

Good Afternoon,

Got the Christmas decorations down, cleaned and put away!  Then, helped out the in-laws with some plumbing issues. 

One more day off, so think I will check out my buddy Bob, and see what he has accomplished with his layout.  Probably will get back in the groove to help him next week.

Looking forward to a train show this weekend in Anahiem.  If I work it out correctly will be able to go for 3 hours prior to Knotts.  Hope to find some couplers for some G-Scale cars.

Jack last night I just came to the conclusion I'm meant to see and be friends with these as a way to help them be comfortable while there still here. I don't know how old he really was but he was up there and like two little kids we would have a shoot out when ever I brought his food ( using our hands as pistols) I feel blessed to have been there for him while he was here he started out as a grump on 4th floor even made the comment I detest and that is " if it weren't for me you wouldn't be here" I returned to him and said If It weren't for me you wouldn't have a place to come and just for your knowledge I did 17 years in the navy how many did you do after that we got along great he saw I was there for him as I told him to calm down and calmly tell me what you want and I'll see what I can do as I believe in vets helping vets completely.

He seemed to calm down and got a sense oh humor even after he saw most of us wanted to help.

I really enjoy my time with the vets I get to serve especially the ones in the long term care as I get to know them and kid and joke with most.

V8 Dennis.....congratulations on your score!!!!  The 1950 Union Pacific AA Alcos (FA1 ?) were the Lionel golden 50th anniversary ones.  I have them (yellow nose, not the rare grey nose version) as well and really like the traditional UP color scheme.  

Paint seems to be an issue with them, especially the red UP lettering on the sides and the red belt stripe.  The red UP lettering on the sides tends to fade, and the red belt stripe chips pretty easily.  I always avoid picking up the engines with my finger tips on the lettering for that reason. 

On flat track, they can easily haul 8 postwar cars and I have managed 12 with some throttle feathering......far more motor than needed, just not enough engine weight.  The D cell in the battery compartment helps slightly.  Clean wheels and track are a necessity for traction.  Without the latter, there is a lot of slipping and sliding going on under heavier consist loads.

I see from the completed listings that a "mint in sealed carton" 1467 set, including the three matching 248X passenger cars, recently went for $2,035!!!  And in another listing  just the AA engine pair "near mint" with the master carton went for $1,320!!!  Mine?  I have the master carton but the engines are a few pegs below these two in quality since mine have been run over the last 5-6 decades.        

Maybe you and I should go hunting together for the matching color scheme passenger cars, just as soon as RT buys me a 736 BERK for my upcoming real birthday (not a Buckeye type of birthday).

Got the shopping done. Got everything I needed from Wal-Mart. Besides the groceries I picked up a gallon of anti-freeze and a couple of cans of Engine Restore for the van. Took the stuff out to the parking lot with the intention of loading it through the side cargo door. Went around to the right side and saw that some idiot had parked his car about eighteen inches away. Either he was a walking spaghetti stick or he got out on the other side. Well there was plenty of space on the left side so I should be able to back up, cut left and pull back in and have plenty of room to open the cargo doors. Went to start the van and it didn't want to start. It was like it was vapor locked or something. I gave it a little shot of starting fluid and it fired right up. So I backed up then shifted to drive and the dang thing stalled! Right then everybody and their mother wanted to come down that row and I've got it blocked. Again the engine didn't want to start. Another shot of starter fluid and it starts right up! Boy, it must really like that stuff! I cut left and pulled back into the space and right then some yahoo pulls into the space to the left and has this desire to park right next to the line. However his desire to keep his car in one piece and not get his right front fender dinged by my drivers door won out and he changed his position. So now I get the groceries loaded, added the Restore to the engine oil and freshened up the coolant with the anti-freeze. Now it's time to leave. This time the engine fires right up with no problem! Now I'm on my way home, on the other side of town as a matter of fact and realize I had left my cane hanging on the back of the shopping cart. Back to Wal-Mart! Fortunately the carts hadn't been collected yet and the one I had used was right where I'd left it. I got my cane then set out for home once again. I made it home without incident.

Maybe you and I should go hunting together for the matching color scheme passenger cars, just as soon as RT buys me a 736 BERK for my upcoming real birthday (not a Buckeye type of birthday).

Jack - TheQ and I have really been thinking it through, and we aren't sure what we are going to do as far as flying down vs driving when the birth takes place. We have no choice for next Wednesday it is a 2.5 hour flight vs 16 hour drive... no brainer. As for when the birth happens, we just aren't sure. I guess it depends on when the call comes in. We were called at noon when Christina was born and we didn't make it down there till almost 3am, so we could have driven it just as fast - the issue was the 5 hour delay at BWI!!!!

If we can drive it I think that is the route we will take as it will be a considerable cost savings... but who knows... we'll cross the bridge when we get there.

Uneventful day, Wife is into a cleaning spree so I decided the basement and my truck were the place to hide be 

 The whole house humidifier was leaking because some jomok that worked on the furnace cracked the drain tube when they were changing the A-coil in the HVAC. It has been dripping on the floor for , oh about 3 years now. I tried everything to seal the PVC pipe but no luck so I decided to just replace the drain line with a bigger one so when it dripped it would fall into the larger pipe. Went to the hardware store ( that by the way is 9 miles away ) and I got lucky, everything I needed in one trip. All is well. Running trains at the same time.

 V8, your right about Hot Rod mag. I still have the 20th anniversary issue and they were not like that back in Jan of 1968.
