Good Morning all from windy and wet Ocean County NJ!

Being seven blocks from the bay I decided to stay home from work. Yes they are open. High tides are 11:31am and 11:52pm. I might make an attempt to check out the bay later as my sisters and I have house right there at the bay with no bulkhead. It's a natural bay and there are about 10 houses in that area, all in the same predicament.

Chief - I agree with you about posting. I like the "Advanced Options" settings but you can't use that with my cell. I wish they could do something about that.

Fife - How's it going? Hope you're out of harms way.

Laz - When are your winds expected to be at their peak?

Tylers situation.  Too bad the HMS Bounty replica will be lost. 

I'd like to see Hanger 1 someday - the history of Lakehurst and LTA naval aviation is very cool. Had a nice full Sunday with the family walking in a Chicago neighborhood 'Halloween' parade - closed a long street, got a fire truck and marching band and we followed, then visited the local stores for candy.

Not a good morning for me. My ankle is causing me a lot of pain so I'm trying to stay off it as much as possible. Good thing I didn't have any plans to go anywhere. I may be able to get some cleanup work done on the layout today. It just depends on how I feel later.

I have intimate knowledge of those blimp hangers in Lakehurst.  Being a Navy brat, my Dad was stationed there.  He worked on R4D's, Blimps (!) and finally Helos....HSL30 was his last squadron.  The blimps were deployed as spotters and finally submarine hunters.  I saw a few as well as the mooring masts.  I actually  saw them tether a blimp, which was exciting.  I have never been to the crash site, but Dad said he did.  There is a simple plaque there to commerorate the disaster.  Been in and around those hangers for years.  It is an amazing place.

Looks like we're closing up at 2 then open tomorrow (yeah, right)at noon.

UPDATE FROM REPORTER ROCK:  The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority is shutting down the system by 2PM.  The state of Connecticut is closing down the state roads.  Barometric pressure in Taxachusetts here is dropping, expected to hit the lowest reading ever recorded.  My reaction?  I'm off to make a big batch of chili and bring in some firewood.

The usual here, schools closed, stores empty, generator at the ready. Cows moved to mostly open field to avoid falling trees.

Banks - I remember Agnes in '72. The dam went out at the lake, boat swamped, 11" of rain in 2 hrs. Took 3 month to repair dam. Chief - hope this doesn't happen to you.

  51 and BIG rain and BIGGGER winds here.  Appose to get worser later this afternoon and into tomorrow.  SANDY is to come and sit right atop of HARRISBURG then go up the SUSQUEHANNA into NY and then NE. CHIEF called and was concerned of our situation here.  Had a nice chat with him.  TANKS CHIEF!.  They expect lots o power outages here so PAM and I filled up lots o 5 gallon buckets o water for flushing toilets and also made lots o ice to have on hand for food.

AF53RAY, make sure HUDSON JOHN doesn't do anything stupid, with less then 35 days to go.

Very quiet day at work.  Forgot to post earlier that Indycar may have shot itself in the foot again as they fired the guy who has made all the progress possible for the last 3 years.  Sure he made some mistakes, but at least he was trying to make things better.  This was probably the best year for competition in a long time.

Thoughts and prayers to all affected by the storm.

Lunch Time:

Sandy is announcing her arrival. The rain is steady and the wind is blowing strong. The Garden State Parkway is closed because of flooding from Exit 62 Manahawkin, LBI, to the end, Cape May. Long Beach Island (LBI) is breached at Harvey Cedars. I heard on the radio that approx. Part of the AC Boardwalk collapsed.

Back home we are holding our own. AF53 told me that we lost Comcast. My son told me that he just got back from a fire at a Pizzaria and a grocery store in Ocean Gate. He said that flooding is not bad by us.

RI Jack: We are doing our best to keep the juice flowing.

Went to a retirement party yesterday for an old neighbor of ours which was held at a beautful venue at a country club.  It was overlooking two fairways and a lake approching the club house.  The food was outstanding.  There was also an artist there doing caricature  drawings of people.  My wife and I got one with me running a train and her sitting behind me.  That was cool.

Well the big news here is the landlords found someone to rent out the house. I will be out of there by Nov. 21. The "get the Corvan back on it's wheels" project will definitely be dominating my next week off.

"The last we heard the ship was still upright," Simonin said, providing some hope the vessel could still be saved.

The Bounty was about 90 miles southeast of Hatteras, North Carolina, or roughly 160 miles from the center of Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane bearing down on the U.S. East Coast, the Coast Guard said.

The three-mast, 180-foot vessel was believed to be taking on water and was without propulsion, stuck in 40 mile-per-hour winds and 18-foot (5.5-metre) seas, the Coast Guard said.

Amazing winds! Not even at their peaks yet and within 100' of our house no less than 3 trees have fallen. One was 18" and luckily it went away from the house. There are a few that could touch us and we will keep our fingers crossed. So far 2 of my three kids have no power my middle one does. They all live within a mile from us.

Brutus I did make a goodwill jester the other day anyway so guess its what is saving me. She wanted some Christmas money to hold and told her she had a choice $XXX or what ever we get from all we took to the auction house which ever is more ( I know the stuff to the auction house should be more if not I'll cash that check and add the difference. We had like 6 tables plus an old TV and DVD play on another and we had a propane fireplace with mantle also ( we paid like $600 about 7 years ago used it one year then moved and never used it since) so it should bring about $100 I hope she should get a fair amount from all we took up just waiting for the check.

Sitting here looking up at the Santa-Fe passenger set with A-B-A heading it really falling in love with it. I'm a passenger train person more than freight but do like both.

Sunny and colder today.  The preson who picked us up this morning was saying how cold it was, and that they had to scrape frost off of their windows.  I agreed that it had cooled off some, but it was not cold yet.  They were amazed that I was wearing a short sleeve shirt and no jacket!  It's the Michigander in me, I guess.

Good luck for all of those in the storm's way.

We kind of lucked out, as our original travel schedule had us flying into JFK tomorrow.  Hopefully, something will be left there later this week, for the flight we re-scheduled last Friday.

Looks like things might be getting interesting over Chicago.  The radar pictures I'm seeing show the western edge of Sandy moving west, and a line of rain moving in out of the west.  Looks like they will run into each other just west of Chicago.  I've got to fly through Chicago too..........

RI52 - there is a maritime museum along the waterfront where those replicas may be.  We didn't have time to visit it though.  If work goes well, we may get some extra time in Barcelona on Thursday or Friday to do some more touristing.

Bummer about the Tigers.

Been raining and getting windier as I type...winds trending north to northeasterly at 40 mph gusts up to 55 mph right now..supposedly getting higher later on.

So far power is still on although I did notice that down the road a ways no lights on....trees looking pretty bare of leaves right now.

Better be getting off the 'puter here...try to have a safe evening here....

Good Evnin' From A Blustery Cape Ann Taxachusetts,

Heavy rain and high sustained winds with gusts approaching 70mph.......BUT things seem to be tapering off a tad for now.  Flooding, trees down, power out in many places, dogs co-mingling with cats.  A disaster!!!!

Hope all youse guyz are hunkered down and surviving Sandy.  We are by no means out of the woods up my way.  Tried to get my wife to go for a ride down to the beaches but she would have none of it.  "What?!  Are you nuts?"  "What's the worse that can happen?  We get hit by a falling tree or electrocuted by a downed power line?"  

BUT.........we are still dry, warm, and with power.  Wifey and I just vegged out and grazed all night , waiting for something to go South.....but it hasn't.  Heavy rain and high winds continue.  By 4:30PM there were about 300,000 reported power outages before the worst hit.  I got tired of watching the non-stop storm coverage so I have been channel surfing all night.  Sean Connery in Goldfinger occupied me up until about an hour ago.

Then the wifey says "Maximus has to go out."  Told her she had my permission to take him out.  Then I got "the look."  Oh joy.  So on goes the rain gear and out the dog and I go.  I wouldn't bring him back in until he had emptied all the tanks......at battle of wills.  I won.

Checked for leaks but have not found any.  I think I should expect some lost shingles when daylight comes and I can take a walk for a look see around the exterior of the house.

On the news the local powers that be are clearly aggravated and frustrated because folks have refused to evacuate their homes down by the waterfront and low lying areas despite repeated warnings to get out.  Then they get trapped by the rising waters.  And, as expected, they call for rescue.
