Jeffrey........I think you are beating a dead horse with that old riding mower of your Dad’s.  Replacing the idler pulley and starter relay doesn't get you anything when the (too expensive to repair/replace) transmission is ready to go.

Whip it, beat it, curse it till it can't go no more. We don't get a replacement til it's dead. That's my father. He once kept an old vacuum cleaner because it still picked up dirt. Didn't matter that you couldn't get parts or bags for the darn thing or that it only ran for five minutes at a time. The point was it worked even if only for five minutes. Sound like anybody you know? Ebeneezer Scrooge perhaps?

RockIsland52
Hope the new batteries in your Mom’s power chair do the trick.  Was the chair sitting unused and uncharged for a while?

Since they got it over a year ago. It was only charged once that I know of.

Saving your foot is most important.

At this point the best I can do is keep it from getting infected. Someday I may be able to find an affordable way to get it removed. No doctor around here will do it on Medicaid as they all want to get rich withing ten years. My foot doctor says I could get it done in Shreveport but he can't come up with any names. The time for it isn't now. There's too much going on that requires me to have some mobility. Getting into and out of my home with crutches is next to impossible and using them inside there's just no space. An amputation site needs to heal before any prosthetic device can be attached and that takes time. The physical therapy required to learn to use said device also takes time. It also takes money. With the economy the way it is who knows what kind of insurance, if any, will be available to cover it.

Oh my a bad week here. So sad.

Wes, Spanky, and Murphy, sorry to read of your loss. Here's hoping Tyler is doing better.

Winter has arrived woke up to a cold house and 44 degrees outside.

Bob, good one, enjoy the turkey.

Kevin, yes we spent 6 days in the UP, no fall colors yet but the Casinos were open anyway..:)

Good Mornin’ Y’all From Overcast Cape Ann Taxachusetts,

Last night after midnight the worst of yesterday’s weather hit here, the second front for the day.  We had opened the windows after dinner to cool things down and enjoy some fresh air.  The 11 o’clock news led off with the prediction we would be hit with the second front just after midnight with winds gusting to 60mph and an overan  inch of rain.  Points 60 miles West of us were already reporting up to 3 inches of rain, localized flooding, downed trees, and power outages.

So on my way to bed I thought it would be a good idea to pop my head into the other room to remind the wifey to close the window next to her when she finished shopping on the net.  “It’s really blowing out there!” she remarked and then went back to her browsing.  She joined me in bed about 30 minutes later.  While I was laying there in the dark trying to fall asleep a little birdie kept whispering in my ear “Get up and check to make sure all of the windows are closed.”   You guessed it.  She had left that Westward-facing window just as it was, wide open. Bang Head

Chief.......no damage from the storm in my neck of the woods, thankfully.  Was glad to hear you are OK.  We did get tornado watches on and off here as well but nothing worse than 60mph wind gusts.

Banks........glad to hear your Mom’s follow-up visit with the Docs went well last week. Thumbs Up

HudsonJohn......hope all of your Mom’s testing last week went well.

V8 Dennis.....how old was that tire you had to replace?  I suspect age and the California heat was too much for it.  Lucky thing you discovered the issue when you did.  You may want to have the other 3 checked.....it gets pretty dicey trying to drive a car on the rims. Whistling

RT.......sounds like the peppers and onions won out this past weekend over the installation of your new flooring. Stick out tongue

LAZ......re dogs and rain, they can get to smelling pretty gamey when they get wet.  Some folks wipe their dogs down with scented dryer sheets to kill the odor while others like my wife use a scented grooming spray and a brush to work it in.  The Chief?  He just drops his pups off at the doggie salon and picks them up later.

Jeffrey........I think you are beating a dead horse with that old riding mower of your Dad’s.  Replacing the idler pulley and starter relay doesn't get you anything when the (too expensive to repair/replace) transmission is ready to go.  Saving your foot is most important.   Hope the new batteries in your Mom’s power chair do the trick.  Was the chair sitting unused and uncharged for a while?

SJ........it sounds like you and the wifey had a nice road trip to parts North there in Michigan.  Hope the weather cooperated for you.  Personally, I find driving out on the open road with the wife relaxing, until she starts back seat driving. Smile, Wink & Grin

Bob......I would think that a VW bus in decent condition would attract some interest.  I’ll bet it moves quicker than you may think as long as folks know it’s on the block.  There is nothing worse than the opacity machine going down when you operate a telescope, especially AFTER YOU worked on it. Laugh

BOC..........re the garden gremlins, chipmunks?

AF Ray..........I can understand your consternation with the Yankees.  The Wild Card in the American League for the playoffs is still up for grabs.

DonB........with all of that CA heat recently and working so close to those boilers, I would have thought you would have lost quite a few pounds in the process = no beer belly. Whistling

KEV.......George and Maximus could make a great hunting team. Thumbs Up

JoeyD.......are you having any luck bribing the inspectors? Whistling

Rich........I think that the new Dodge Dart you are talking about is assembled at the Belvidere IL plant North of Kev and West of DougM.  A godsend for the jobs of the UAW workers there. Thumbs Up

Gotta run.  Later, gang!

Morning.  Cloudy and chilly.  More big rain last night [actually very early this AM].  2" or more.

Spanky, prayers for Tyler.  You also have UNC and Duke that are great state of the art hospitals.  Wake Med and Rex [part of UNC] have great cancer centers.  We are praying it is not cancer.  If so, majority of the people survive now.  God bless.

Bob, you and RT are running neck and neck for the "Pot's" comedian of the year award.

Flu shot at Dr's office middle of the afternoon and then Regional Transportation meeting til 6.  Frankie's birthday dinner after that.

Hope the "boys" north of me did not have bad storms and any damage.

Have a good one.

I must admit I am taken back by the situation Wes is in. I am because my father went through the same type of loss. My mother at 32 years old with two sons my brother at 7 and me at 5. This will be a dark page in his life. Wes will need all of the strength he can muster up but with the help and support of the entire family and his friends like Buckeye brighter days will come.. Clear and a cool 40 degrees going up to 71 today.

I cycled the furnace just to be sure it is all working.  I am looking to get a set of 16x6.5 tires and rims for the wife's Torrent so I can take off the 18" ones for the winter. Besides it rides like a truck with those tires with so short a side wall.

Chief, Glad yo umade it through the storm,

SJ did you go into the UP?

RIJack   Maximus may be good with cats but George is not good with dogs or coyotes. Surprise

Bob, Nice box of stuff. Smile, Wink & Grin  did I tell you my first car was a 1960 4 door Corvair? What a peach. Laugh

Good morning. It's 58° with 90% humidity. Somebody up north left the door open. The high will be 82° and it'll be partly cloudy.

Plan for today is to get the grass mowed. Anything else will come as it may.

Konbanwa,

Day two of the inspection went okay as far as I can tell.  The inspectors cannot officially tell us how we’re doing.  They will finish tomorrow but cannot give us our rating until the middle of October as they have to wait for all the other units to complete their inspections.  It’s been raining off and on here which has been nice, except for the extra humidity once the rain stops.  I need to finish some reading and get to sleep.

Jack – I’d have Yankees sheets too if the wife would let me. Smile, Wink & Grin

Kev – The amount of work you have done on your layout is outstanding.  Your photos and videos are always a joy to view.

AF Ray – I hope you’re right.  Petite is coming back now too which should help.  Enjoy the games.

Welcome back SJ.

DJ Spanky – I’ll pray for Tyler.

Bob – That was a good one.

Sayonara,

Joe

Good Morning from Blueberryhill RR....

It is a cold 40 degrees. Going up to 78 today with sunshine.

Today is a busy day. I have a bunch of chores to do and a project to work on. I'll be busy until lunch. Need to spend some time in the train room. I am working on a power problem with a section of track. I think I will just replace it.

Prayers out for Wes and Family.

Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Wednesday.

Evening all

Just me here at the telescope. Working on some equipment in the chamber though, so I can get a radio station out of Phoenix that I like.  I'm blasting the music to keep me company. Did have a bat fly into the chamber tonight. Will probably have to open up to shoe him out. Had one in the control room yesterday, but he left in the evening.

Here's my companion for the day:

This is a room-temperature receiver centered at 225 GHz that we use to monitor the opacity of the sky. The electronics hadn't been cleaned out in over 10 years. Oh, and it's something from our German friends that we built the telescope with.  Being the guy who works on Corvairs for fun, I dove right in. Hey, it still works after I put it all back together! Nothing like German engineering. I wish, however, that I could get rid of the piece of German engineering that is in my driveway (VW Bus). It is up for sale so hopefully some sucker buyer will come along soon (They will need a headlight switch:)

Chief - glad to hear you weathered the storm OK

Something amusing I heard on the radio:

"I shot my first turkey today.....scared the crap out of everyone in the grocery store."

Good Evening Everyone!

Been awhile for me but our second busiest time of the year has just passed and now to relax a bit.

Only get a chance to read every couple of days and a lot has happened.

DougM - Sorry for your lose of your pet. These things take time to heal as any pet owner knows and it is a great loss to a family. Hope the healing is quick.

MikeC - Hang in there and please keep us posted. This group can be a real good support group to air things out with and we all care.

HudsonJohn - I will see you again in a few days to check the inventory problem you are going through. I know the boxes are piling up. (Soon more).

RI Jack - Don't feel the need to apologize for carrying on about Maximus, Our pets can be a great source of pride. Being a Sox fan on the other hand you can..............

RIJack (again) - I checked with my sister about what pajamas HudsonJohn wears and she tells me that he's still wearing his Howdy Doody pajamas! Same ones since we met some 30 years ago!

JoeD - A little scary for awhile but I think the ship has been righted, as they say. Thur night we are going and we have one more left for October 2nd against the Sox.

Later!

Good evening from tropical west Louisiana. It's a pleasant 76°. Chance of rain tonight seems to be nil.

Checked the batteries on the power chair today. Seems that they're both toast. Won't hold a charge for long. So naturally they have to be replaced. My father isn't a happy camper about that but oh well. I don't live under his roof so I don't have to listen to him gripe. Picked up a few things in town today. Among them a bottle of super glue gel, a dust pan (been needing one for years) and a half pound roll of 60/40 lead solder. Radio shack still sells the stuff. I got fed up with the no-lead crap years ago. It just doesn't seem to work right for me. I also got a new backup battery for my alarm clock. The old one was down to six volts and the clock would lose it's memory when the power went out. Got a two-pack so I'll have a spare on hand. Probably forget where I put it when I need it.

Tomorrow I may be able to mow the grass. It needs it. I have to fix the tractor first. I need to install an idler pulley and a starter relay.

Well, time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

All calm now.  1.65 inches of rain.  Some straight line wind damages 20 and 50 miles away.  No actual tornado touch downs but lots of warning and spinning up high.  Sent them up to Fife and Brent.  Next, on up to Rich and John Hudson.  Banks might get some too.

Kids home from groomer.

Prayers for Wes.  Sad.

Good Afternoon Y'all,

Thank you for all of the kind words about my dog, Maximus.  I am sorry if I carry on about him.  Yes, I admit I  biased because he is our dog; and I am proud of what we have.  But there is another reason.  Over the past three plus decades my wife never had time for herself or a hobby (job, the kids, and making our house a home).  Now that she does have a little more time, she has embraced Maximus' training and now obedience competition. I am also proud of her, what she has accomplished with this, her first obedience competition dog.

This past weekend my dog didn't retaliate against the great dane who took a cheap shot at him, because of his solid breeding and training.  While the other dog was over twice his size in every dimension, he did not perceive the dane as a true threat, thereby effectively defusing the situation merely with his calmer demeanor.  Like a bouncer in a bar, the confidence and presence can go a long way to avoiding an ugly outcome.  But he also trusted in me to keep him safe, to make the right decisions for him. That is part of what dog training does.  It teaches the dog deference to the owner.

Owning a Doberman is no picnic either.  They are smart, with high drive and high energy, and they are thinkers.  They like to test limits.  But they are also among the most maligned of breeds when it comes to the media, the insurance companies, and to the general public.  Every time you see one in a movie or on television, they are attacking someone, even in the animated kids stuff.

My little granddaughter doesn't understand why this image of "her dog" is so negative while she finishes watching some Disney movie that has a Chihuahua from Los Angeles travel to Mexico to rescue his poodle girlfriend (from the mean Doberman!).  Remember Magnum PI with Tom Selleck?

While a certain amount of this bad reputation is earned, how does one explain to a nine year old that we live in a world with too many unsafe dogs (pick your breed including mixes) due to decades of poor and indiscrimminate breeding (for the almighty $), far too many dog owners who just don't follow the roadmap of responsible dog ownership, and politicians who propose breed banning as a feel-good solution?  Breed banning and breed discrimmination won't work.  The bad guys, the worst of the bad dog owner lot, will just move on to the next dog de jour.....think Dobermans (1970s), German Sheherds (1980s), Rottweillers (1990s), and now the American Staffordshire Terrier AKA Pit Bull (2000s).

It wasn't like this a half century ago. Our experienced, trusted trainer has experienced the same, a noticeable increase in dog owners who show up at her center with dogs that are reactive towards people and other dogs.  Unbalanced dogs.  That's good for her business but a trend that disgusts and saddens her.  She is convinced that this trend is due to indiscrimminate (poor) breeding and folks treating their dogs like fur kids, with way too much permissiveness and overindulgence.

I suppose since I am still typing that Bob hasn't read my other post on voter referendums and banned me.  If I disappear for a while you will know why.  Too much SoapBox  Laugh
