Good morning. It's 70° and partly cloudy. The high will be 95° but will feel like 102°. There's a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

I'm spending today recovering from yesterday. Got overheated while mowing my parents yard and being on the edge of a sugar crash at the same time didn't do me any favors. No layout work or any other work planned for today.

Good Mornin' Ya;ll From Paertly Sunny Taxachusetts,

It'll be 10 degrees cooler here today, low to mid 80s due to offshore Northern ocean breezes.  Humidity is supposed to be worse with isolated t-storms on the radar.  we sure could use a good soaking.  I hope that Chuck and Buckeye are not in jeopardy with their power outage, and they should probably take refuge North with SJ until power is restored.  Picture those three killing time together and scarfing down all of that banilla !!! Thumbs Up

The Fourth of July is a particularly stressful time of the year for many dogs..... with all of the chaos of family functions, and especially the fireworks which can totally unravel a lot of dogs unaccustomed to the sharp, unexpected reports from the fireworks.

The common canine reaction is for a spooked pup to flee in a panic and to find refuge......and not necessarily around their home and family.  Lost dogs are not particularly adept at finding their own way home as indoor/outdoor cats are.  Better to keep your pup indoors and away from the holiday frenzy, wearing collar with ID tags at all times, and on-leash/under control when outdoors.

Statistics show that less than 16% of lost dogs are returned to their rightful owners.

Although our Maximus is used to up close and personal, unexpected gunfire from his protection training, we don't take any chances.  Visitors to your home and yard, especially children, may not be very careful about latching gates behind them, or they may accidentally let the pup loose while going in and out of your home.   Best bet:  place your pup out of harm's way in your air conditioned bedroom with the TV on to mask most of the racket.  The pup will be comfortable, relatively stress free, safe, and you won't have the heartache of a search, potentially a fruitless one.

Shelters are packed with strays who are never reunited with their owners.  And far too few of the shelters are no-kill shelters, which means your Fido could summarily get wacked if she/he cannot be placed in a new adoptive home short order.  If you own a reactive dog or a breed that scares off potential adopters, one escape could be a death sentence for your dog.

Just a few weeks back Memorial Day weekend at one of our family functions, a loose dog wandered into our yard.  The pup had been loose in a fenced/gated yard down the street with the partygoers, but she had escaped because someone had not securely latched the back yard gate.  The owners, not from our area, did not initially realize that their dog was missing.  Then the terror for them began, and a doghunt ensued on foot and by car.

A lot of people will not try to catch your wandering dog, a strange dog, because they are afraid of getting bitten (wise decision).  Or they falsely assume the dog will just find its way back to the owner.  It only takes one automobile......  I would also assume no one would try to catch my Doberman, even though he is highly social and dog friendly to boot.

The wifey and I asked our partygoers to calm down their children and get on our deck so the pup would not get spooked and take off.  After a few minutes we were finally able to lure the dog over to us with a cheeseburger and get a leash on her.  We watered the dog and then phoned the number on the ID tags which fortunately the dog was wearing and still had on her.

Although our call just got an answering device, we remained in our front yard with the dog.  Twenty minutes later, a frantic woman came booking it towards us from down the street, was tearfully reunited with her pup, and the story had a happy ending.  Your dog may not be so fortunate.  (DOG) SAFETY FIRST ON THIS FOURTH OF JULY !!!!

SoapBox

Later, gang.

It's 76 now, going to the low 90s.

That will be the same forecast all week. A nice chat with Brutus and Charlie last night, no world problems solved, we gave up on that a long time ago. It can't be done. FIREWORKS: oh yes some of our neighbors started a month ago and granny said she heard them way into this morning. Our mayor and council talk the talk but the police just ignore the noise. Gotta get going, granny is BBsitting today & tomorrow..S.J.

Happy July CTTFans!

It's currently 70F heading up to the low 90's; still hotter the seasons average but at least it's not 100+

Fire News:

Sadly the number of dead has risen to 3 after two more people perished in the Waldo Canyon Fire and the count is 346 homes lost in that fire alone.  Heart wrenching photos coming out of folks returning to what was their homes including this man who just recently returned after severing over-seas in the Army

Lunch Time:

That Friday night / Saturday morning storm wrecked havouc but it hit just South of AF53 and me. The storm is known as a "derecho", a weather phenominum that is a line of fast moving wind with violent lighting and thunder. It shook my house. All we had was some small branches down by me. There was more destruction there than a tropical storm. 2 boys age 2 & 7 were killed when a tree came down on them as they were sleeping with their family in a campground. A fisherman drowned when the storm hit at 3 am in Absecon Bay. the 2 others with him made it to shore. Over 150,000 people were without power. We sent crews yesterday with 100 people and over 50 pieces of equipment. I worked yesterday and we are also dealing with the heat.

RI Jack, the weather has not been kind to us.

Dennis I remember that fire in the "Sack".

Jeffrey, I hope that they do catch the shooters.

Stourbridge: Prayers for the Firefighters and the Victims of the fires.

Have a Great Day, Phone is going crazy

All hairs are cut and it is nice having it short in this heat.

Looking at 94 degrees now with a ton of humidity. Can’t stand to be outside.

So I decided to hide in the shed and tackle the problem with the SKS only firing as a bolt action rifle. Started with the normal stuff like is it clean. Huh? Well the son must have never cleaned it. Super Angry Second I looked into the assembly to see if it was all good. I had never had one apart so it was a step by step process. Confused I thought I may be loading it wrong, but I was not. Yes

Thought it was the piston or piston chamber, they were dirty but still no good. Hmm Now it would fire maybe once or twice then it would half eject or jam. Bang Head  Next I checked the gas chamber for leaks and they were not bad.  Bang Head Best I could get was two shots. By now I have gone through about 50 rounds and getting *** off.  Super Angry  I was using some ammo that came with it. It was round nose green bulk ammo from who knows where, I think Russia. Well I thought it couldn’t be the ammo but what the heck why not try some of the pointed nose 7,62x39mm also from Russia and see what it does. BINGO works fine.  Big Smile Go figure.  Dunce

Prayers to all of those in harms way be it fire, wind, or rain and a special pray for your recovery BOC and all others in need. Angel

Have a good afternoon and stay cool.

ChiefEagles

Morning.  Hot but not as hot as has been.  Box this AM and then County Comm. followed by Town Board tonight.

Prayers for Ohio and CO.  Late radar showed massive lightning in WV.

Later.

WV has had problems. The also have gas shortages. We have some gas shortages here in central VA but fortunately we have both gas and diesel tanks here on the farm. Fifedog - were you in WV during the storm?

The generator folks are so swamped it will be several week before we get ours. I hope no more storms for a while.

I purchased the De Walt scroll saw DW 788 1.2 Amp 20" and stand. Now I need to finish the wood working shop so I can set it up, along with the new drill press and the old table saw, sanding machines, etc.

Good afternoon all,

Puttered in train room/garage this AM before it got hot.  Put up flag in front of house for July 4th week.  I've had this new flag for a while but it is too heavy to put on a flag stick so I hung it vertically in front of the house.  Had to look up flag etiquette to make sure I had it the right way.

Hope D.Baker is OK with the finger problem.

Lawson Farms Pat, I sent you an E mail.  Did you get it?

Neighbor behind us wants to go half on a block wall between us.  Getting estimates now.  Only problem is bad timing with all my other headaches and the fact that I might lose two beautiful tall cypress trees that are too close to the fence line.  In my list of priorities, this is about the last thing on it.

Went to train meet yesterday but could not find what I was looking for.  Left early.

Glad power is restored to the guys that lost it.

I am lucky that my next door neighbor, a retired firefighter, has a portable generator and lets me hook up on it to keep my refirgerator going when we have power outages.

Chief, one of the lift outs on hinges on my layout are on a curve too but no problem.  D. Baker installed it.

Had ground sirloin burgers from the grill last night and were delicious.  I'm still spending too much time cleaning grill.  Probably too fussy.  For small jobs, I think I should get a portable grill or even a small charcoal grill.  Big one not worth firing up unless you plan on doing a lot of cooking.  I need to keep an extra gas bottle on hand too if I use the grill much.  Think I'm below 1/3 of a tank now on propane.  No gauge but pour hot water over special tape that turns colors to indicate fuel level.  I had a gauge on my old grill but does not fit on the shorter hose they gave me for this one.

later,

Ray

Good Afternoon from Blueberryhill....

We have power again. After 4 days of sweating. We had to throw out a lot of food that thawed out. But, we are well and safe.

Last I heard, Buckeye still has no power.

Howdy All.

Been busier than a centipede in a sack race, work awhile then crash. Even to tired to post, not much in the "reserve energy". At the museum yesterday and the previous friday, it was very busy.

Chief, Had to stop in and give my condolences to the N.C. Gaurd Unit that had the C-130 go down during firefighting work. Even when serving in a Gaurd Unit the duty can be rough, prayers for the one who died as well  as the other crew members who survived and the rest of the unit.

Need to go stretch out for a bit.

Later all.

Did a little work today. Went down and helped my father move some bags of potting soil and mulch to the front garden. My mother says that she wants to work on it. Odds are they'll sit there till the cows come home and there ain't been any of those around here for years. The other job was fitting a U25B cab to a GP7 just for the heck of it.

Our deepest condolences to the families of the fallen Citizen Soldiers ANG from NC.  These men and women dedicate their talents to our country and often times have little time to say goodbyes to their families and employers.  They made the ultimate sacrifice to help save us all, God Speed.

Sad news about the NC Air Guard C-130.  The Guard [Air and Army] put themselves at risk all the time.  Hats off to those some call "weekend warriors".  Our government has used them as regular reservist.  This is just like law enforcement, EMT's and firefighters.  All risk their lives everyday to save us.

Flown with the NC Forest Service on some small fires.  Nothing like those in Co.  Up drafts and then down drafts along with heat and smoke.  The crews on the ground fighting and digging with heat and no rest.  Hats off to all of them.

Little Box work done.  Then got call from County Atty. wanting to do lunch before County Commissioners meeting.  Town Board tonight.  Plans are [notice, plans are] to work all day in the Box tomorrow.  Can't finish switching yard due to waiting for switches to come in from internet order.  Will try and do mine area and mountain area.  This will get it 90% done as far as gettign track laid out.

Later  [got to call Shake and Bake]

Quick stop for a cup o' joe.  Son's birthday today, so that kept us busy.  Also had to put new sneakers on the van.  Jack, thanks for the thoughts.  At the time, it was surreal, as it happens, you fall back to your training.  I can remember it as if it were yesterday.  It was a very hard day, the worst.  I think such events shape how we look at so much of life after having experienced them.  Dennis Smith, a well known author in the fire service who attended the funerals made the statement as we were all lined up in our class A's, "each man, alone in his thoughts", I thought about it over the years, we were alone.  Can't explain it, we all had our own experiences that day, and we were all changed, but I couldn't say how.

Chuck, glad you have power back.  We had quite a mess of storms come through here, but with mostly buried cable, we rarely lose power, and if we do, it is not out for long.  Hope the damage was not too severe.

Well, gotta get some sleep, morning is to be a busy one.

God bless,

Dennis

Sunny and high 90's today.  Clouds off to the east suggest that there might have been some rain, but not here.

The welcome club ladies were at our place for the monthly bunco game.  This requires emptying the living room and setting up card tables, then re-setting everything when the event was over.  They were one short of an even dozen, so I got roped into playing.  Goody, goody.

Off to the dermatoligest tomorrow to find out if that mole on my leg is just a mole or something worse.

All for now.

Mornin' boys.  Mornin' English.  Sunny and warm in the Mid-Atlantic region.  I didn't hear about those other stories, because all of our news channels focus on 24/7 whining Baltimorons.  In-laws still don't have power, nor do my neighbors across the street.  I feel embarrassed that we do have power, when usually we lose it during a big storm.

Wifey wants to go to cemetary (mother) today.  Grandbaby coming over.  Won't get much done, to be sure.

Lawson - Nah, we were at Fifedom for the storm.  My folks (mountain top Mineral Co) said the storm skipped right over them.  When we move out to the country, a generator will definitely be on order.  Wifey wants to look at a couple houses in Berkeley Springs. (Too close to DC for me...)

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Sunny Cape Ann Taxachusetts,

Thought for the day: did you ever notice those supermodel-looking meteorologists who stand in front of the weather maps and the 5 day forecast numbers blocking critical information when all you really want are the facts? Bang Head

Mid 80s for the week, topping 90s again by the end of the week.  "ALLEGED" potential thunderstorms approaching for tomorrow afternoon.  Where have I heard that empty forecast before? Bang Head Great whites spotted chowing down off Cape Cod have about 30% of the two dozen beaches under "stay out of the water" warnings.  Sharks feeding on seals.  DinnerLots of great airial shots of their huge shadows in the water.  Not a great time for the public beaches to be "no swimming" zones considering the holiday week, vacationers, and the high temperatures.

Today is/was supposed to be "new over-the-range microwave oven" dekivery/install day for my FIL.  As it sits this morning, Home Depot handling the entire delivery and install and haul off.  Now at the 11th hour the FIL is worried about whether or not the installer has to pull a permit!  FIL wants to cancel the delivery/install to farm the $49 delivery/install/haul off charge it out to a neighbor..... he thinks to save a few bucks.  I've got 3+ hours of back and forth on the phone with him and Home Depot with brand/product/price research, features and specs comparisons, measurements, sales tax discussions, etc......, all over a $350 purchase.  And now it appears the whole thing may not result in putting this whole thing behind us. Bang Head

I cannot believe that US woman in the track and field 100 meters who refused to do a run-off after the historical tie in the trials last week.  You give up so many things in your life to dedicate yourself to making the Olympics and then leave your opportunity on the table......because your pride tells you that you already got the final spot and shouldn't have to go with the judges decision.  DUH!!!!!  What was she thinking?  Some of the youngsters out there today don't know how to deal with adversity and just plain quit. Bang Head

RaySP......the local news had a  "safe eating" food expert do a piece on the (grill) topic last night.  She said just turn the grill on the highest setting and leave it for 5 minutes once the temp has peaked, then wire brush off the residue......which takes about two minutes.  I also like to scrape off the residue when the grill is still hot after cooking and get the majority off.

Dennis and all.......the losses of safety workers always stay with me.  We have two couples whose husbands are police officers.  I don't like to bring up the topic of danger with them, feel they have enough to worry about day-to-day as do their wives, kids, and family members.  By the same token I don't want to leave them with the impression that the common folks don't care or don't appreciate all they do for us.  Fine line.

Chuck.......glad to hear you have your power back.  Throwing out the spoiled food was a sin.  You should have packed it up and sent it to the Chief so he could mix it up with some road kill for some fine vittles.DinnerWhistling  How you and your wife weathered the heat at home for four days is beyond me.  I picture  Blueberry Hill running around sans clothing. Smile, Wink & Grin

BOC.....sounds like now that the traetments are over you are feeling slightly better with an admirable sense of humor to go with it.  Hang in there. Thumbs UpAngel

V8.......you have the same weather, different coast.  Interesting stuff about the LA sprawl.  The technical LA footprint is massive.

MikeC......SIL was pulling for Spain in the European soccer tournament after they handed Portugal a defeat in the shootout.  He's happy.

DougM......my automotive a/c failure on my last car cost me about $900 to straighten out but was worth every penny.  Included a new compressor and idler tensioner.

KEV........my FIL not so far from you to your North called to say his lawn is a pretty shade of tan.  He refuses to spend money on watering, but the lawn always comes back.  His landscapers showed up yesterday and went through the motions, not much growing going on.

RT........hope you overdid the birthday and anniversary celebrations. Thumbs Up

JoeyD and AF Ray.........Red Sox starting pitchers and relievers replete with no-names have been getting it done, but run production has gone South.  Result: low scoring losses.Bang Head  Bet that is keeping you up at night. Laugh

Pat......the backorder on generators does not surprise me.  But it will eventually be worth the wait.  Time for you to go put some SPF30 on the cows. Big Smile

Chief.....when are you going to learn that with a wife, "hurry up and then wait" is the order of the day?  I am referring to last weekend's plan to go to the lake house.  BTW.....from the sounds of your posts you are getting behind on your reclinerizing. Laugh

Darren........this wildfire war seems like it will never end in Colorado. Angel

Gotta start a grocery list and then go shopping for tomorrow's festivities here.  As usual, no one has told me how many people, what and how much to buy, or what time the guests will be arriving. Bang Head

Later gang.

Good Morning CTTFans!

It's 68F and heading for the middle 90's.  Yesterday we broke the record high (again!) at 101F; how may records does that make already *cry*

FIRE News:

Sadly in South Dakota two Fire Fighters lost their lives when the C-130 they flew crashed.  Currently all C-130s are now grounded while they look  into the cause.

Fires in Colorado still burn BUT, the crews have made some serious headway and rain is slowly moving in and folks here keep hoping.

It's 72 but feels like 90. We finally got some rain this morning. A passing storm decided to come this way for a change. No not a bad one, just some thunder, no wind at all. I had nice chat with some of the guys last night and no plans for today. It's raining again, I will take all it wants to give at this point..S.J.

Good morning. It's 79° and mostly cloudy this morning. This afternoon will be partly cloudy with a 20% chance of rain. The high be 95° but will feel more like 104°.

Today I'll be going to the post office to drop off a couple of packages then from there to Wal-Mart to do the remainder of my grocery shopping. $49 isn't much so as usual I'll be getting what I can get the most of for the least $$. No layout work planned for today.
