Here is an interesting thought, I will share...
Back in 1956, I had a Cleveland Press paper route. Every Saturday I would collect from my customers and go to the local bank to cash in all the change. I would make 6 bucks a week and deposit 3 bucks in my savings account. The bank would pay 3 1/4 % on the savings. Today, the same bank pays 1 1/4 % interest on savings accounts. And they have a credit card that charges 18 % interest. Makes you wonder.

Graduation dinner [again!!!!] at Japanese restaurant.
Maybe go to lake house. Got to mow there too.
Use to fly into FL alot. Always fly into Orlando or Ft. Lauderdale. Never Miami. Horrible airport.

Good morning. It's 71°. The high will be 87°. It's mostly cloudy. There's a 40% chance of rain this morning increasing to 60% this afternoon. Locally heavy rainfall is possible.It's been crazy here. The power went out twice last night and at least three times this morning that I know of.The last time it was out for nearly an hour. Looks like the cable company got their problem fixed. The cable service came back on when the power did for a change.I got my new Magicjack Plus yesterday. Right now I have it plugged into a USB port. I tried running it through my modem yesterday but the modem won't see more than one device. So I have to get a router to plug it into so I can use it without the computer.Looking at the Rivarossi Y6B I'm wondering whether I should remotor it or just use it to hold down a display shelf. I had it apart yesterday for a preliminary exam just to see what's wrong with it. Looks like just the motor. I have an old Rivarossi U25C chassis that has a motor that works and it looks like the same type. I put the loco back together last night so Murphy couldn't find a way to scatter the parts all over creation. Here's my problem. I have severe nerve damage and my hands don't work so well anymore. Tearing the loco down and putting it back together was a major chore. Handling the small parts was a terror. I have to watch what I'm doing extremely carefully as I can't feel the parts and could lose or break them quite easily. I'm seriously considering not fixing it. The problems that arose from these nerve problems were the main reason I got away from steam in the first place. I could no longer fix them without it becoming a three ring circus. I'll look at it today and judge whether I should fix it or leave it as is.

I've got the Y6B opened up and pulled the motor out. SO far it looks promising. I still have to compare the motor to the other one I have to see if they're the same. If they are it'll be a simple change out. If not I'll have to get imaginative. I tested the motor after pulling it out and my original diagnosis stands. It's dead, dead, DEAD.To those emailing me about doing repairs on your steamers, please stop. I don't do that kind of work. I'm working on this one because it's mine and I'm not afraid of breaking it. If I break it I haven't lost anything.
Well somehow I knew this wasn't going to be a simple motor change out. The motor from the U25C is near identical to the one from the Y6B. However, Murphy has spoken! The shafts are different. The shaft of the Y6B's motor is rectangular and the shaft of the motor from the U25C is round. Looks like I'll be doing some filing. First though I'll tape over all the openings on the motor so no filings can get into it. Just maybe I can get a running loco out of this after all.

Just did a test with the new motor (yeah right! It's only around thirty years old!) held in place by my fingers. The motor runs and all the drive wheels appear to be turning. I've discovered though that the screws that held the original motor won't work with this one as the holes are in the wrong places and I'm not about to drill a couple of holes in the front of the motor. So I'll have to use some JB Weld to hold the motor in place. That's gonna be loads of fun for anybody who decides to pull it out. There's also a shaft bushing that will have to be filed back some to fit on the new shaft. It keeps the shaft coupling from moving back and forth. Looks like there's daylight at the end of the tunnel.

Evening all not a lot going on tonight just relaxing some. seems I picked up a cold or and allergy not sure which. either way making me grumpy as draining a little and giving me a sore throat.

The new motor has been mounted and tested in place to adjust it for optimum operation before the JB Weld dries. All that remains is reattaching the wires and putting the shell and cab back on.Speaking of motors, I need a new windshield wiper motor for my van. The old one finally gave out. It's locked up tighter than a paint bottle cap glued shut with epoxy. You don't think that's tight? Give it a try sometime.
Evening from the box. Back from Japanese restaurant graduation dinner. Was great and another plop plop fizz fizz. Over feed you.
Got all the planned chores done early and was early arriving at the restaurant.

The father-daughter dinner-dance last night was fun. The princess spent more time with her friends than she did with me, but I kind of expected it. She did save me a few dances; however, she was unimpressed with my fine dancing skills. She had a great time and that is most important. It looks like the rain will take a break today. I am happy about that as I am taking the older son to a Japanese professional baseball game in Tokyo this afternoon. The Tokyo Yakult Swallows will host the Seibu Lions. We will take the train in to Tokyo which makes it even better. The wife, princess, and youngest will attend church but it’s not the usual service; Rebecca St. James will have a concert instead.

Good Evening everone! Been a long, boring day here. I am on call and had to go in this morning for a little while to do rounds. Came home, was planning on putting out some fertilizer, rained a good part of the day. We expect rain through the beginning of the week. Tonight, I grilled some chicken and made some gnocchi for myself. Had to do some government forms for the kids to be able to imigrate.
Joe, when we had our father/daughter dance, she wanted me to hold her all night. That makes for a sore back after two hours of dancing. She said she was not tired! No wonder. Still, it was one of the most special times.
Regarding air fares, from what I have heard, it can often be cheaper to fly into Vegas, with one or two night layover, then fly to final destination and repeat for return trip. They want you to fly there, so many deals to be had. I have not checked it out as yet, but may be worth it.
Well, I am on camera tomorrow and then we have a special dinner planned for the media department at church. Should be fun. Better get to bed. Hope to check back tomorrow. God Bless,Dennis

dougdagrump Ray, When I used to fly to Daytona 3 to 4 times a year, Dad & Stepmom lived there, I most always would go to Orlando. It was so much cheaper then going directly to Daytona that the difference would come pretty close to covering rental car costs which I would have anyway. When I was picking up the tab I always used the alternative airport approach. Doug, I think my oldest son finally got a good fare from L.A. (LAX)to Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. It's a red eye but non stop leaving L.A. around midnight and arriving in Ft. Lauderdale in the early AM. Price was around $356 RT per person for the three of them. Lowest fares I saw from Ontario were over $400RT. Went shopping today and picked up a new toaster oven. The old one died this morning. Had to get a new power strip too for the kitchen. The old one had a bad order circuit breaker. This new one really heats up fast. Good for baking or broiling as well. Too tired to cook now so we are going out somewhere. later, Ray

Time for me to call it a night. The Y6B now runs though the pick-ups are insanely dirty. The tender is too light so that doesn't help either since it's part of the pick-up circuit. All that remains is putting the shell back on. That can be done some other time though. I'm worn out from working on this thing all day. Here's a short video of the test run. See y'all tomorrow.

Low 90's with some clouds today.
Walked around downtown to the outdoor venues for the Scott Jopliln festival today. Always enjoy the live music. It is really interesting watching the piano players play the ragtime music.
One of the venues is at the site of the Maple Leaf club where Scott Joplin played. This site backs up on the UP railroad tracks. Sure enough, in the middle of one song a westbound unit train of empty coal hoppers comes blowing through town. The performer finished the song, tried to intorduce his next number, then just said "I'm going to play some boogie-woogie". He sat down at the piano and proceeded to play a boogie-woogie piece to the beat of the passing train. Was really neat.
Laz - I agree that it is a shame that the shop classes seem to be going away in the schools. Even the current college engineering programs seem to ignore shop work. Some of the stuff that our younger engineers come up with show their lack of knowledge about what machine tools are actually capable of.

Seems like it was a long day. We finished the little landscaping job we were doing in front - put in some plants my wife picked out and mulched it. We had to go back for another 7 bags of mulch. I had figured the volume correctly, but I was way off in the area we had to cover! Oh well, next time I will not guesstimate, but will actually measure stuff.
Son and I went to see MIB 3, which was really great!
TARDIS is ready, so let's get this show on the road

Been awol again. Had all day and into evening meetings last week (Tues, Wed, & Thurs). Left early Thursday to drive to Norman OK for son's registration at OU Friday. We spent most of the day in orientation, adisory, and registration, but it is done! He is in! Move in is Aug 16th. Drove back to Dallas Friday evening so we could celebrate our daughter's 21st birthday. Then spent today moving more dirt and readying the boating gear for the season. Whew!
Have a busy week this week so posting may be sporadic.

Good morning. It's 72° and cloudy. There's a chance of rain later. The high will be 92°. Yesterday I got the Y6B running. The drive is somewhat noisy and it can hardly manage a short string of NMRA weighted cars. But it does run now and that's a good starting point for anyone wanting to put in a more powerful motor and clean up the drive. I've done what I set out to do which was to remotor it. Now it can take up it's new career as a shelf queen until I can find it a new home.Found out yesterday that I need to get a new windshield wiper motor for my van. The old one is lock up so tight I couldn't turn it with a wrench. It wouldn't budge at all. The replacement is around $30 so it looks like saving time again until I get enough money together to get it. Problem is life keeps getting in the way. Every time I get some money saved up I need to use it some other thing of importance. One of those right now is to get my new Magicjack Plus working properly so I can have phone service without having to have the computer on all the time. My father let me keep the money I normally would have used to reimburse him for paying my electric bill and car insurance to get that done. I have the new Magicjack but now I need a router to connect it to. I ordered one yesterday so I only have less than $10 left now. Oh well, I have a birthday coming up next month so maybe one or more of the other family members will chip in. Meanwhile I'll have to avoid driving on rainy days.
It's 76 going to 91.
Nothing to report since last night except I did catch Brutus and Charlie on chat. Said goodnight at 11. Our day is not planned, don't even know what today's meal will be, Hmm don't even know what I can find for breakfast. It's gonna be hot so I will probably stay in unless one of the kid's invites us to dinner.. Yeah like that's gonna happen....S.J.
