Mornin' Fellas

Kev - I thought about doing that, but I'm color blind and they would do me absolutely no good... unless I can talk TheQ into reading the results for me... Sigh At 1.37 acres I really don't know if I want to tackle this myself.

Brent,

No No these kits you put the soil in it and send it off to be tested then they send you back the results. All you need to do is read, then buy the materials they say you need.

Not much going on today. Still no pay for the first two weeks of work and no reply from Global HR in Panama.  Bang Head  Looks like Friday I will re-retire.. Beat you LAZ.  Wink

To all of you going to York,

Have a safe and wonderful time.

Later,

Kev

Morning all.  HOT.  Rain on the way [much needed].  Working on outside of Box and garden.  Pay the Feds day. Crying  Get back from the State [when they get to it]. Sigh

Brutus, you deserve a good York trip.  Safe and fun to all traveling there.

Kev, good job on layout.

Have a good one.

Hey, I remembered what I was going to do with the Frankenstein trio. I was going to check the wheels to see if they needed cleaning. Complete waste of time on my part. They're spotless! I've had trains running pretty much all day every day for the past couple of weeks. Ran my fingers over the rails a little while ago and got a barely visible gray smudge. That's GLEAM for you! I have three locos pulling fifteen cars. Only one of those cars has plastic wheels, a Tyco Diamond Chemicals tank car. All the others have metal wheels.

Mornin' All.

Since I can no longer work in the yard the way I did previously, always had one of the best looking yards in the neighborhood, we are planning to have it all taken out and replaced with an almost Zero maint yard. The better half gets a little freaked out when I go out and putz with the yard, what little is left.

Looking for some K-Line parts, unfortunately my "go-to" guy, Brasseurs, couldn't help. When I first came back to trains I picked up a bunch of the K-Line Hershey cars for the "Better Half's Christmas Train". As part of the layout I incorporated one of the K-Line Heavy Haulers but unfortunately the die-cast chassis for the trailer is a victim of what appears to be "Zinc Pest" and has begun warping and crumbling. Anyone ever seen any of these things being "parted out" anywhere, train shows/e-bay/etc ? They seem to be commanding some pretty good prices for complete units on evil-bay.

Cheerios Van has arrived, time for breakfast and morning pills.

Prayers for all in need !

Later.

Lunchtime,

We are meeting our new director this afternoon. I guess that I am supposed to be excited. Oh well.

Kev, There has to be some kind of glitch that you did not get paid. If you decide, happy reretirement.

Prayers and Thoughts for all in need.

Enjoy the day!

Good morning all,

Dougda, low maintenance yard is the way to go.  I've had one for years.  I do have some grass but pay a guy to cut that once a week.  Money well spent!  Years of working on the railroad with irregular hours and living by the telephone did not leave much time for lawn work.  Any other trees and shrubs I have must take care of themselves or die.  I'm retired now but still have no interest in yard jobs.  I do have to maintain a swimming pool and that's enough for me.  Any free time I have is devoted to the trains.

Good luck and safe travel to all the Yorkies.  Wish it wasn't so far away from us here in the Golden State.

 John

Just had a nice Italian Beef for lunch with chips and milk.  Dinner

Yeah John, there was a glitch all right. After my wireless would not work at home Bang Head and 4 hours doing research digging my way through the HR Black Hole Monster. Bang Head I found out that my trainer on the pay sheets needs a trainer. Dunce  He had me enter Sunday dates as week-start and they should have been week-end dates. So it looked like I was trying to get paid for a week where I did not work there yet. Confused

Problem is nobody raised a flag or asked a question they just did nothing. Bang Head Go figure. Super Angry They say I should see the money on Friday.  Hmm

Hope their right. I feel like I have aged a year in 5 weeks. I have come to know I am not the confident young man I once was.  Sad The rocket pace of the world today seems at times to be running me over. I need simpler times not faster ones. The money is hard to walk away from. Got to think on it I guess.   Whistling

Think I will take a nap. Sleep

Tks,

Kev

DougDG: Congratulations to you and your fellow club members. You guys deserve it. I like watching O Scale trains run and it's the scale I started with back in the 60's. I would be running O Scale now if I had the room for it and could afford it.

KEV.........I think you made the right decision in the first place with this assignment?  Why?  Many reasons.  The money is good.  The assignment is for a pre-determined time frame, in and then out.  You get to use your vast knowledge and experience close to your comfort zone, but this time with no fear of rocking a boat or bending some noses.  So in my mind the reward is high, the risk is low, and with nothing to really to worry about except doing your best, the stress should be less.  Yes, there will be some frustrations and aggravations with the usual brain deads, the politicos, and the obstructionists......but nowhere near what is was when the food on your table was on the line.  Outsmart the knuckleheads this time.  Fear of you and respect toward you just might be what you encounter.

Brent........at 1.37 acres I hear you loud and clear about what lies in front of you.  I would take on just a bit each year, starting with what I could enjoy in the near term.......like the entire immediate house perimeter for you, Susan, Christina, and your family/friends.  The outlying acreage isn't going anywhere, maybe better left in a more "natural" state.  In the long term, do you really want to have two + hours of lawn mowing and trimming each week or the expense of having landscapers do it?

Re getting in some real nice grass without spending a fortune or killing yourself.........hire someone to rototill 6 inches deep the yard "as is" in two directions at a 90 degree angle, debone (rocks), then backfill and level using only the dirt from the rototilled area (not topsoil, too expensive, not needed).

Plant the lawn yourself using nothing more than a spreader, lime, starter fertilizer, the right seed (twice the amount recommended, and one for the specific area like full sun or shade), a roller (rent) to compact it all (seed, lime, starter fertilizer) to avoid run-off of the seed, multiple hoses and sprinklers, spigot splitters, and sprinkler timers.

Water daily, twice daily id necessary, but don't let the soil and seed ever dry out!.  At two to three weeks drop another coat of starter fertilizer, and ignore all else that is growing with the grass seed.  Over the first 4 weeks of just watching the seed germinate (days 15-30) and the sprinkers doing their thing, drink beer.

Then mow for the first time with a stand up and lighter mower.  Drop a coat of regular fertilizer/weed killer mix (weed and feed).  At about the same time take chemicals to the crabgrass (granular, using the spreader, product for actively growing crabgrass) and whatever moss remains (moss killer, more lime).

You will have a beautiful, full lawn inside of 7 weeks.

DougDG and 8N........hope you get a handle on the crud.  I hate it when the stuff hangs on despite what the Docs tell us to do. Angel

RT......Angelthe Docs today find something simple to fix.  On the stray cat front, Pat would tell you that hungry cats keep your property free and clear of varmints.  Telling your wife that?  Don't go there!!!!Smile, Wink & Grin

Later gang.  It is up to us to hold down the fort while the Yorkies are screwing around in PA. Laugh

Good evening everyone!  A big congratulations to Doug and his gang in SD.  Rich, thanks.  Wife is feeling better.  Glad to hear Jon is well out there in Iowa.

Pin the process of cooking a roast beef.  Looking forward to some good vittles.  Did a quick case this morning and was able to have another date with my wife.  Came home to put another coat of paint on the window sill, only to have the dog jump up and put his paws in the wet paint.  Had paw prints in the paint and white paw prints on the hardwood floors....glad he didn't make it to the rugs!

Brent, here, we have the county extension office.  It is a part of the University of Georgia.  They will do the soil tests for $8.00 per sample bag.  You just write what you are wanting to grow and they will test the samples to tell you exactly how much and what to put out regarding soil conditioning.  They also have folks who will come to your property to advise you.  I mention this as you may have a similar program in your state.

Hope all you "Yorkies" have a great time up there and contribute lots to the local economy.

God bless,

Dennis

Ps, will pray

Ohayō,

I have not had a chance to post in a few days and I was 10 pages behind on the Pot.  Every time I sat down to post something would always come up.  I should have more time to post over the next week or so as I am on leave.  The wife left for Hawaii yesterday afternoon.  She and a couple of her girlfriends will be there until next Wednesday.  Therefore, I am at home holding down the fort.  We homeschool the kids and I have picked up those primary duties for the next week.  Fortunately, the wife had the kids way ahead of schedule so I am only going to focus on a few of areas: Bible, math, and Italian.  The kids still have their other activities as planned but I’m hoping to find some time for a field trip or two.  The hardest part so far was when the youngest (21 months) woke up last night and wanted mom; after about 10 minutes of screaming bloody murder I was able to get him back to sleep.  The older son’s baseball team had practice last night but due to some rain we had to practice inside a gym which restricted our ability to fully practice.  However, I was happy to have some practice as the first game is this Saturday.

I hope they everyone is doing well and I’m sure the York attendees will have a great time.

I’ll pray for all of us in need, especially for Ryan and others who are ailing.

Sayonara,

Joe

Hello Ole Timer. Hope everything's going well for you.

Went with my father today to a place in town for soup and a sandwich. I had Cajun gumbo and a Cajun roast beef sandwich on jalapeno bread. To be honest I've had hotter wheat bread. I couldn't taste any jalapeno and the only thing Cajun about the sandwich was the name. Tasted like an ordinary roast beef sandwich. As for the gumbo, it was a bit lean and tasted more like a thin beef stew with rice. The meal was fair but definitely not what I was expecting. Nothing done on the layout today except to check if the track needed to be wiped. Complete waste of time. Other than a very light gray smudge on my fingertips it's clean as a whistle. Other than the above I've been watching some TV and getting some rest.

Evening all as Ole timer said he was in the chat last night with Brutus, SJ and John for the few minutes he was there lol

well not sure what I did today but I blew the lights in one of my passenger cars and the K-line protector is now shot ( still have 4 more lol. ) Working on my shelf layout. Its going along well. guess the protector did its job but if I have to put a new one there everytime its not going to be a pain as its up on the shelf 9' off the floor.

As a whole thou the loop is going up fairly well. Hope to get it finished enough tomorrow to run a train on the loop. I'm running about 1/3 - 1/2 of the loop now.

not much else going on here tonight not sure if were going to have anyone on the tardies tonight or not as Brutus, SJ, and Charlie are in York and I think one computer between them all.

Talk to you all later.

Good morning everyone.  Up and ready to head in.  The other senior guy is out trying to kill big chickens in the woods, so I have early cases through the week.  My son is up and ready to go also.  He has the CRCT starting this morning.  He does real well, he consistently scores in the 11th plus grade level (he's in fourth).  Finally finished putting the last layers of paint on the window sill.  Had to make sure it had plenty as dog likes to go nuts when looking out at deer, people, and that is his favorite spot to watch.

Have to go and write some letters to get donated medicines, etc for the orphanage and healing home for our trip to China.  We will have a fair number of suitcases to fill here, as when we come back, we bring all our purchases with us.

Joe, we seriously considered home schooling our kids, but wife didn't think she would be up to it.  We are blessed with a great school system, so that works for us.  One big benefit to the home school route is that you can take some great field trips and they count.  I am sure Japan has plenty of adventure for the kids to get into.

Hope everyone has a blessed day,

Dennis
