Brent,

Will do.  Sent you an email about something I saw at Brady's.

Kev,

I had no idea what I wanted when I was driving there, but I couldn't say no to that Decapod.  Now, if they had the C&O Yellowbelly with PS2, that would've been a different story.  WHat I you using for groundcover.  Looks good.

Buckeye: That's a lot of stones for one year. I'm thankful that I've had only one kidney stone in 51 years. Gall stones on the other hand, I've had quite a few of them. Those babies hurt too.

 Kev,

WHat are you using for groundcover.  Looks good.

Jim

It is Woodland Scenics ReadyGrass. Burnt summer for the switch yard and green for the logging and tree side. It has a vinyl backing and came in rolls that were 50"x 100" so I could keep down the seams. I just did not want to use carpet and I did the trim because it will keep it from rubbing off from traffic. I have ¼" foam under it and it kills the sound pretty good if you don’t screw down the screws tight to the table. Still I am not sure if I like it or not. Time will tell. Kind of too late now.

Thanks Jim, will keep it in mind. I have my eyes on one locally... may call them tomorrow to see if they will be at the show in Saturday...

I have the MTH C&O Yellowbelly in Conventional. I am really trying NOT to convert it to TMCC, but the longer Lionel drags their feet in bringing it out in Legacy the more difficult it is getting...

Kev - I think it was you who earlier mentioned the layout and the wood work... for the framework I tried something I had never seen before - I built the frames out of 1x4s and the legs are 4x4 Preasure treated posts. The posts have mortises cut into them and the framework sits inside the mortises - freely, no screws or nails. It has been up for over 3 years and no problems. The framework is bolted together though. As for the multiple levels... the main level has two mainlines, the upper level is one line in a folded-dog-bone configuration. There is a transition track connecting the main level with the upper level. The grades on the upper level REQUIRE cruise control on the engines, so Conventional operation is not available on my layout. I do have 1 PreWar engine, and two Post War engines, but they will not see action on this layout. I have plans to build a small layout for them at some point in the future. I also plan to build a small Thomas Layout for kids. Also a ceiling layout for my wife's Napa Wine Train. And I hope to get a Lionel Girl's set for my 3mo daughter...

Brent,

I saw that set, and I figured I should let you know asap.  If I had your cell # on my phone, I would've called from the parking lot.  The set is very nicely done and I had a hard time not springing for it.

Good evening. I just finished converting the last of the ten freight cars I've been working on. It's a Bachmann gondola. For some reason known only to Bachmann the body sits four mm higher than other cars. That's almost three scale feet! :o It's also the height of a Kadee draft gear box. So this car has four gear boxes instead of two and the couplers are at the proper height. Now all ten cars are lined up for the next step. Weathering. I'll take photos of each car as it's done. I wouldn't want you to miss it.

Now it's time to hit the sack. I'll see y'all tomorrow.

Sunny, about 50 today.  Had to scrape frost off of the windows this morning.

Got a surprise call this afternoon from the owner of the LHS.  He's had a Canadian Pacific Freight set on his shelf long enough that the box is sun faded.  This is the one with the LionMaster SD90 with TMCC.  Anyhow, he finally sold it this weekend.  The guy who bought it came back with the SD90, the CW80 and some track - no sound system.  The phone call was to ask for my help.

Stopped at the shop on my way home from work and took a look at the thing.  Just to make sure that we covered all bases, I brought the SD90 home, ran it in TMCC mode, in conventional mode on a CW80 and in conventional mode on a TPC400.  No appreciable sound.  The horn is very, very faint.  The volume control has no effect.

This is very similar to the sound system troubles I had on my recently purchased Texas Special SD70.  ThisSD90 probably needs to go back to Lionel.  I wonder how the warranty will work out on a 'new' set that is about 5 years old?

Interestingly enough, the SD90 runs more smoothly on the CW80 in conventional mode than in TMCC or on the TPC400.  I used the P.E. layout as my test track.  I wonder if the overs and unders do something weird to the TMCC signal.  The headlight flickers when running on the TPC400 or in TMCC mode, but not on the CW80.

All for now.

Good morning. It's 37° and clear. The high will be 58° and it will be mostly sunny.

On the schedule for today is car weathering. There are ten freight cars lined up and they're way too clean and glossy. I have the weathering powder and the brush ready to go and I'll be starting on the first car later this morning IF nothing else comes up. I'll be taking photos of each car after they're done.

Good Morning,

Quiet so far.

SJ, I agree with Kev on the battery back up sump pump. I am on my second pump. Replaced it when I did the main pump 2 years ago. I found that Lowes has a nice compact set up and the main pump is very quiet.

8n, Good luck with the Lionel warranty. The LHS told me that you can by a new set, but they go by when it was made not purchased. I walked away wondering about it.

Time for the Safety Huddle.

Have a Great Day,

John

Hi GUYZ,

A bit cooler here at 42.  Took dog for walk after school and saw 12 deer.  I see more deer around my neighborhood then I see in the woods.  No buck just a bunch o doe.  We are in farm country here and these deer just hang out in the patches of woods near the farms.  This is all private land about 200 acres and No hunting, its posted.  Seen some big bucks though.

BUCKEYE, hope you get rid of the stones. If not maybe save for good traction when it starts to snow.

Stay frosty,

Welcome from Sunny Floriday!  We're on a family vacation/grand gathering doohickey first at Universal (just the four of us) and then here at Disney World for the reunion for the rest of the week.  There are no phone bars in the resort and it's $10 a day for internet.  Since we have only been getting back to the room really late anyway, that didn't seem like a good deal.  Today we are taking it a little easy and just going back for a few rides at Hollywood and Magic Kingdom that we missed Sunday and Monday.  Yesterday was Epcot part one, and tomorrow we will do the other half of Epcot.  Char is doing fine and in fact I'm having trouble keeping up with her with my bad knee!  They sure had a small but nice selection of Marklin trains at the Germany "land" in Epcot.  I'm debating getting a monorail set, which looks to be about 1/43 to me?  I've seen them in a few photos of layouts people have posted.  They run on AA batteries apparently.  We have a 20 percent off coupon, which my wife gave me to use.

Sorry I've been missing the TARDIS in both senses of the word.  I'll catch up with all you guys and all these posts when we get back.  CIAO!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Konbanwa,

The 16-month-old son and I went for a short 2-mile run this morning.  Of course he was in the jogging stroller.  It was about 50 degrees or so when we went for the run but it felt good.  I had a relatively easy day at work and I came home to one of my favorite meals - meatloaf and mashed potatoes.  I decided to use some leave at work and I am off tomorrow and Friday.  This will allow me to take care of the Christmas decorating sooner which will allow me to get my trains out sooner.  I haven't run trains since the beginning of August.

Kev, SJ, and Doug M. - I am pretty adventurous when it comes to trying new foods.  I believe it is a great way to experience the local culture better.  Most of the time I enjoy the new foods I try and I have tried some odd things before.  I know plenty of people who never leave the base or try new things, and I know they are going to regret those decisions many years from now.

Hudson John - That is great news about those fellas.

Brutus - Have fun and make sure you ride the train.

Sayonara,

Joe

Aloha from a chilly and sunny Chicago - only 26 for now. Looks like I got my wife's cold. Rats. Hope I burn through it soon. Brutus, get the monorail. I saw it at a shop in Downtown Disney a few weeks ago. Ran trains last night whilst fixing one of my wife's necklaces that broke. Toy Train skills to the rescue!  Kevin, I'll be near your old stomping grounds this Sat, taking the teen to see Lewis U.

Good Morning

A little bit of snow in the grass this AM. up to 6 inch's of the stuff not too far west of here. Joe I don't know I might taste something new but I kinda got use to what I like ..lol.Lionel may not warranty a 5 year old set, last I heard it was 3 years  from mfg. I wonder if sitting in the window(you said the box was faded) may have caused a  problem. I have an SD80 that I bought from RT that runs smooth as silk. Well so far.  Off to Kroger this morning...S.J.

Oh no I do not have a battery back up. Charger needs to be on all the time. I do have a water detector over one of the drains.

Good morning, cold and frosty out there. Cat has already decided to come back in the house and is waiting for some milk from the Cheerios. Going to hit the low 40s but lots of sun and little wind. I may try to finish filling the wood shed today.

Brutus: Sounds like your having a great time. It has been 6 years since we have done Florida we used to go every year over Christmas. I miss it and we need to go again. Maybe when the grandkids are big enough to do their own walking.

GreenprobeJim: I checked out the Decapod,,,,,,sweet and I like the long haul tender.

Brent 88: I guess I have to give credit to the elves too on the wonderful layout work. Per fifedog’s comment.  Smile, Wink & Grin

RT: That NS is a great set. I have often looked at that set with a want. I like the paint scheme and Tripple Crown Trailers. I have the 1992 18207 NS Dash 840C and thought it may be the same engine.

8n: Let us know what happens on that warranty claim. Bet that Jon is right.

LAZ: Sounds like you see the same thing we do. Once the fields are cleared the Deer population explodes in the wood.

Demay: you know your right, I wish I did try that food now. No matter how sick it looked.  Ick!  I guess I just can’t stand to pot something into my mouth that looks like it just flew out of my mouth. Surprise Dinner

DougM; Lewis U. is very nice. Both my son and daughter took some classes there. Of course they don’t do anything now that would use any of what they learned there. but that seems to be the way it works these days.

Well guess I will head out and see if I want to cut and split wood or come back in and set up some stuff on tthe layout.

Later,

Kev.

Guys, how would you go about replacing a traction tire on a steamer like James the Red Engine in Lionel's Thomas line? How do you get the rods off at the wheel to slip on a new one? I've been researching this a while - it looks like the 'rod connection' to the wheel is a sort of plug.  Any advice?

Kev, did you ever see the sets at your local Menards?

Mornin' Y'all.

Cheerios Wagon has come thru so breakfast is over, mornin' pills next on the agenda. Have to get ready shortly to visit my primary care doc, annual physical/heartattack follow-up.

Will have to make sure everything is "battened down" this afternoon, all kinds of wind & weather warnings up starting this evening. In looking at the maps it looks like Shake-n-bake/Ray/Dennis will get it worse than we will down here, we should be pretty well in the "rocking chair" with the Jet stream blowing offshore to the north of us and turning a tite loop and heading NE  just to the south of us.

Bob, make sure you have either your tether with you or lots of rocks in your pocket. This appears to be heading your way.

Did you guys get the e-mail flyer from Trainworld? They are having a darn good sale on some WBB diesels.

Pill time, catch y'all later.

Someone wake up the Chief and remind him to start a new pot tomorrow.  He's usually sleeping in that little building behind his house. If he's not there check the one behind the mayors store front office.

Kev, did you ever see the sets at your local Menards?

Doug,

Yeah I was there yesterday ( Morris off Rt 47 ) and they have plenty of them on sale $50.00 off with rebate. They also still have two of last years SOO line set for $189.00. Also all of the cars for this year and the buildings

I can't help you with James the Red. Don't have one but almost got one.

Had to quit spliting wood. Frost + sun = warm up = Greasy mud

I got the ten cars weathered. They now look just as rusty and dirty as any of my others. I wanted to get them done today as tomorrow is bill paying day. I get to be depressed as I watch my Social Security check disappear. I'll have the photos of the cars up later.

Thirty days hath September, April, June and NOVEMBER!  It's official, this is the last day of the month.  This month has really flown by because of my trip back East and the Cal Stewart Train meet to mention a couple of things.

V8 Dennis, good luck with the new denture.  Are you getting another partial or going for a full upper plate?  I'm down to just 4 anchor teeth left on top so I might have the same problem eventually.

Brutus, sounds like fun at Disney World.  Been many years since I was there.  I foolishly skipped the Magic Kingdom part assuming that it was just like the one here in California.  It isn't !  For one thing they have some bigger looking steam engines on the Disneyland Railroad back there.  Glad Char is doing well on the trip.

Laz, sounds frustrating to see all those deer and not be able to hunt them because everything is posted.  Maybe the farmers will allow some hunting after their crops are eaten up by the deer.

Buckeye, sending another prayer for removal of your kidney stone.

Chuck, I should have know that the first place I heard of snow here on the forum would be in Ohio.  We don't have to worry about the snow cannons here.  It all melts by the time it crosses the desert.  Next weather event here is calling for a lot of wind tomorrow.  We shall see.

Went to see a physically challenged friend of ours last night and shared a brought in dinner with them.

Been hearing a lot of talk about the new WBB ten wheeler steam engine.  It has possiblites to look more like scale with some alterations but that bent main rod attached to a slot in the crosshead guide looks too toy like for me.  However, if a person is strictly into toy trains I guess this would be OK. I have heard of prices as low as $170 delivered which is a great buy.  No sound but has the Williams bell and whistle I think and maybe a sueth smoke unit.

Jeffrey in La.  you're going to need a big storage yard on your layout for all those cars you are cranking out.  I am maxed out on space myself.

later,

Ray

Nice work Jeffrey for one day!!

I had to call off splitting wood because of mud so I did spend an hour or two on the layout as well. I like the log car and need to scale mine better than Lionel did.

 Need more Trees!!!

The wifey is starting to get excited now that it is looking like something more than plywood and trains.

Kev,

I didn't know that this Decapod was available with either a long or short tender until I got home and checked online.  I like the long tender that this one has though.  Just need to get some cars that look nice behind it since it is Railking Imperial.

Buckeye,

                   Hope you feel better.
