Hello all
Weather is getting worse but we are still open for business. Fairly overcast and right around freezing.
Finished the card model I was working on today. For my first one it didn't come out half bad and was certainly a lot of fun.
Here it is ... wait for it...
The semi-rigid polar airship Norge from 1927:
Those little bitty engine cars are about an inch long. Now I know what it is like to model in Z-scale...
The whole thing is about a foot and a half long. What do you need for card modelling?
1) cardstock paper w/ printed model
2) sharp hobby knife
3) good scissors
4) hot glue gun, white glue is ok for flat stuff, but I found anything w/ a bend needs the hot glue
5) hard cutting surface
6) time
7) patience
The last may be the most important. A few things I learned from this:
a) they call it a hot glue gun because well....it's hot
b) the smaller the piece, the harder it is too build
c) if you're unhappy w/ the results you don't have much invested so you just find your lighter and then start over
d) it's a heck of a conversation piece...."you're making a what?"
Jeffrey - hope the hand is ok

Well checked out the Train fair and Farm Toy Show in Princeton and picked up only 2 things both new in box: A K-Line NORFOLK SOUTHERN MP-15 Diesel Switcher a K-2215 and a Lionel Docksider Switcher 6-28676 USS. I paid $ 110.00 for both. Think I did well........ if not, I had a good time because the wife wanted to sleep so me and Jim from next door went. I also got a nice 1970 something Caterpillar 1-50 scale 988B for only $20.00
Just got called into work to run the truck tomorrow so got to go.

Good Evening
Temp made it to 50, but it was so gloomy it looked like a winter day. Well my 2 Mich. teams won but the Buckeyes lost by 7, tried to play their game on the ground instead of making some good passes. It didn't work. Banilla will be waiting..S.J.

I went out earlier to retrieve my trash cans (four days late but there's no time limit here) and I somehow dislocated my right thumb. I've always been double jointed so that's probably the answer. Since I can't feel the pain from it I had no problem popping it back in place. It's not swollen so I didn't do any lasting damage. This is one of the big dangers of severe neuropathy. You can break the bones and an infection can set in before you know what's happening. That's what happened with my right foot. By the time I knew anything was amiss it was too late. The damage had been done. It's been a slippery downhill slope ever since where one step forward can turn into three steps back. I've been slowly sliding down that slope ever since. Ever had a MRSA infection? You do not want to. I've had two and I nearly didn't survive one of them.

Grey and cold - cleared the deck for winter and cut down some tree limbs and other wood. The bride was out with her girlfriends until very late, so hopefully there's a nap somewhere today. Ran trains last night - no pile ups

70 degrees and sunny tomorrow. Should I put up some outdoor Christmas lights, or should I follow the time-honored tradition and do it in a couple of weeks when it's 30 degrees, with a 20MPH wind. Frostbite......the doctors have to earn a living after all.

Good morning all, Cloudy and cool here with a little overnight sprinkle. I think I will put in an appearance at least at Cal Stewart today but still plan to be there tomorrow also. I'm taking my real toy stationary steam engine down there for a test run at the carpet central layout location.
My two adult sons and grandson are out chasing the U.P. 844 this morning. I took a pass on it today. Had all I could stand yesterday. Lots of pictures on the internet in different places including Railpictures.net and trainorders.com but you have to be a member on the latter for complete access other than thumbnail photos.
The old engine really looked good the way they have her all shinned up you could eat dinner off the rods. I first saw it in 1968 in Ogden, Utah at the 100th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad. Brings back lots of memories. I remember some yahoo sprayed water all over the driving rods while it was in the roundhouse up there when it should have been done with kerosene or something like it. The crew spent hours getting the rust off.
Will report back later on Cal Stewart,
Ray

Good Morning
45 with sun now.
Saturday football for me is coming close to the end but I still have now. So that's where you will find me, in a comfortable chair watching TV. A small breakfast of eggs and toast as granny is fixing pasta for supper. Enjoy the weekend..S.J.
Good morning. It's 52 and partly cloudy. For the high today it will be 72, partly cloudy and more humid. There will be a 10% chance of rain this evening going up to 30% or more after midnight.Nothing going on today other than cleaning up a bit after some projects. Had a good time yesterday, lots to eat. I had the job of being my mother's minder and driver, both of which can be quite stressful. When passing through town on the way back home I stayed beside a tractor-trailer so it was between us and the Leesville shopping district effectively blocking any sight of SALE signs at the clothing stores and therefore was a good thing. The only reason she hasn't brought home an escalator or elevator is because none of the stores have any being that they're all one story structures. Well hopefully today will be quiet.
Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
It is a cold and clear 30 degrees. Going uup to 52 today with sunshine.
Today is a busy day. I have an errand to run and some chores around the house. Maybe, this afternoon, I will be able to get a nap. Last Nascar races are this weekend, for the season.
Yes, Guys, Buckeye is still alive.
Dining car is here with an omlet for breakfast.
Y'all have a great Saturday.

Days and days of waiting, worry, and anticipation and this is what we get - Buckeye - Really???
Warming up here and 70s for the weekend. Looking forward to some rest this weekend as it has been a long hard week.
Jeffrey - good info on the cleaner. Thanks! I had the same experience with Goo Gone - leaves a pesky film that collects dust.
Hope everyone has a great Saturday!

All right, TARDIS is ready, Mike, just doing the prelaunch checklist now
Char got home from her work trip this morning and she's doing well. Chewy is doing fine, Jack and glad to hear that your dog is doing well too Reading a new book collection of BPRD stories with some neat HP Lovecraft and Steampunk stuff in it here and there, but mostly this one is more modern day. Anybody notice how much Steam power sci fi has grown in popularity? I wonder if Lionel could come out with an official Back to the Future train, like the one in at the end of the Wild West one? They could have the Delorien on a flat car too
Lovely chat with SJ tonight, but we failed to solve the problems of the world
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Good evening all,
IIABSDISEI with temps near 50. Work has been crazy busy this week. Did 3 miles Wednesday and 2 miles Thursday walking at YMCA. Wife and I went to see "In Time" tonight. Good movie. Good ending. Still having regular fare in the morning for breakfast. TBIL and I can drive. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,
Mike C. from Indiana
Good evening
It's 43, gonna stay in the 30s tonight.
Well we had a late lunch out, a place we had not been to. The food was good so we will probably go back sometime. I did some reading, took a short nap and watch a movie tonight, that was my day..Banilla is ready....S.J.
An interesting day spent doing some testing w/ observations on the telescope. This is a problem that seems to come back around every so often, but we may have figured something out.
Weather is going south though. Getting overcast and the winds are picking up. Maybe some more snow Sunday night and Monday.
Working on a cardstock model of an airship. Never tried one of these. It's a fun challenge though and a good way to learn patience. Relatively inexpensive too. I'll post some pictures when it's completed.
Time to find a pillow. 6AM comes early.
The temp is already at tonight's low of 51° and I can see a thin silver crescent moon in the clear sky. It's been a busy day for me today and I'm wiped out. See y'all tomorrow.
Good evening everyone. Been up and running since 02:45. Had to do a emergent heart this morning that lasted all of the morning and into the early afternoon. Finished in time to grab a bite to eat and rush off to pick up the kids from school. We had to make up the violin lessons as the weather was just too bad to head out on Wednsday.
Have some work to complete on the risers for the elevated rail line on the layout. I think that will be my morning project.
Don, glad things went well on the procedure. Will say a prayer for FIL.
Jack, regarding the Chief, we may be better off NOT knowing! Just kidding Chief, I know you keep a busy schedule.
Have a great night,
Dennis

Banks - We won't know anything more until the end of the year. In the meantime, we keep looking.
Good morning all, spent the whole day yesterday chasing/photographing Union Pacific steam engine #844. Went with a friend and we drove out to Banning, California toward Palm Springs and waited, and waited, and waited. Train finally showed up about two and a half hours later. Shot all kinds of pictures of passing U.P.Trains and when the big moment arrived with the steam engine, you guessed it, I blew the shot. All I got was a going away picture. However, I got a second chance near West Colton yard at the crossing of the former ATSF Railway, now BNSF. She had to wait a while at the crossing so I got all the pictures I wanted. I will try to share them if I can get my son to show me how to post them.
Don, glad you're OK after minor surgery and glad your FIL is doing OK as well.
Jack, don't know about venison. I've only had it once and that was years ago but wouldn't say tripe and grits in the same breath. Grits are good if you put something on them for flavor but I just don't like the looks of tripe. That must have been depression food. I think they use it in menudo soup though here in the Southwest.
Getting ready to make some oyster stew today. This feels like oyster weather.
Don, hope to see you at Cal Stewart
later,
TGIF!!!
Wow What a wind today!!! Gust of 45mph here in North Central Illinois
So strong I got to get out of the truck and work because too windy to spread fertilizer. I only hauled 3 loads and one was a half load so only 30 ton before it got too windy to go on.
Got a water leak in the basement " AGAIN " to work on so I can use the time off.
I got a nice 1:50 scale John Deere 2954D Live Heel Log Loader for my logging side of the new layout and should get another EJ&E Chicago Beltline boxcar for my EJ&E train I am making in the mail today.
Hey Probe did I miss something too???
Later,
Good Mornin' Y'all From Chilly But Clear Taxachusetts,
I've got HudsonJohn's weather up here. Dipped below freezing last night and the "warnings" of ice patches are ramping up on the weather forecasts because there is nothing else for them to talk about locally. Taxachusetts drivers should not receive these warnings.......they drive worse when conditions dictate otherwise. I hate to admit it, but every time I am sitting in traffic, which is more often than not, my inclination is to curse the motorists involved in traffic accidents tieing everything up. Yes, some of the involved driver's are victims of another's stupidity and carelessness. And accidents happen. It's just that there would be far fewer of them if folks drove sensibly and paid attention to the fact that they are piloting a 4,000 pound weapon with lives at stake..
Maximus has fully recovered from his two surgeries and has resumed all manner of dog training. He looks funny, a black dog with a huge shaved patch on his belly. I suggested a tatoo to the wife to hide the scar but my wife not amused. We had a post-op issue that cleared up in a couple of days, three golf ball sized pockets of fluid buildup under the skin, that was rectified with hot compresses. Sorry about the pontificating, Jim, about Chewey's post-op recovery....had my dog on the brain. I slept on the couch two nights near the pup just to make sure nothing went South while we slept. And yup, the wife insisted we make another downstream visit to the vet (not required, which was thankfully no-charge) just to make sure everything was OK. I swear that if it were me post-op, my wife would not have the slightest concern.
Don't know about you guys, but it seems the holiday calendar is filling up earlier than ever, and with more committments. While I understand the intent of all these gatherings, the fact of the matter is that they take away from personal time and personal business and have a tendency of turning what should be a happy and stress-free time of the year into a nightmarish treadmill of "events" that wipe out time for more casual shopping, matters of the home and family, and warm reflection. How can one fully enjoy the holidays running on an empty physical and emotional tank? There is something to say for a quiet night at home by the fire decompressing........and running trains.
By the way, my wife has enough left over but new rolls of Christmas wrapping paper, cards, ribbons, tissue, bows, name tags, and decorative holiday gift bags to start our own supply store. I have it all organized, safe and sound in one closet. Yet every year she goes out and buys more. What's with that? At least with an overabundance of trains, they are used.
Don........hope it was nothing serious. And prayers continue for your FIL's continued recovery.
JimmyT.........if it was meant to be, it was meant to be. Look forward. While it is good to take a break, step back, analyze what happened, and try to draw some conclusions for future consideration, ultimately we can't get ahead looking behind.. Giving your best is the only thing that matters.
Dennis.........I wonder what we would discover if we "Google earth" the Chief. We might find he is goofing off while he is posting otherwise.
RT.........my overall impression is that your inventory- thinning is not making any progress.
Guys.....re eating venison? Next you will be telling me how good it tastes if pepared properly. In my book, it is an acquired taste and not on my grocery list. Nor is tripe or grits.
Later, gang!!!!
Jack.
32 now with sun. 40 for the day. Had a nice chat with Brutus last night, we talked movies mostly as I recall. So no world events solved. Today is eat out day but I don't know where yet...Last friday of the month, Jan. & Feb. fridays don't come around this fast..S.J.
Aloha from a cold and sunny Chicago where it's 35 but feels like 20 with the wind. TGIF everyone! Great video, Brutus. Glad your surgery went well, Don. Hope the power's back, Jeffrey. Ran trains last night. Tinkered more with making a bigger speaker housing for the Tech II sound machine
Good morning. It's 36° and partly cloudy with a 9 mph E wind. The high will be 64° and it will be mostly cloudy. No layout work today as I'll be attending a holiday dinner at my father's work site. The fun starts at 11 am and continues until ??. Yesterday I was experimenting with two cleaning liquids. I tested them on exceptionally dirty track I got from various sources including some old rusty steel track. The contenders are Goo-Gone and Krud Kutter and I must say that the Krud Kutter is out in the lead on the dirtiest track I've tried it on. With a little scrubbing it took most of the rust off the steel track leaving only some of the heaviest pitted rust. I don't think track in that condition would be in use on any model railroad except maybe on an abandoned stretch of track or a scrap pile. I found that the Goo-Gone leaves a film behind. Whether this is good or bad I don't know. The Krud Kutter leaves no film and will remove dried latex paint. I think I'm liking this stuff.Ever heard the old question 'Where were you when the lights went out?'. Well last night I was in the dark. The power went out about 7:30 and was off for three and a half hours. During the first hour and a half I had my electric lanterns going and with the aid of my LED headlight I did a bit of reading from an old sci-fi book called 'After Worlds Collide', the sequel to 'When Worlds Collide'. It's a bit of a long read for most people and even longer for me as I have to take frequent breaks due to dyslexia. Can't read much when the words are moving around and the pages are trying to merge. About 9 pm I called it a night. Well, I've bored you enough for one morning.
It is a cold 24 degrees. Clear skies and suunny. Going up to 40 today.
Today is a busy day. Wife is running errands. I have a few chores to do and some paperwork. Then, I can relax.
Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.
