When it started, Big Boy [Elliot] and Spankybird [Tom P] were about the only ones on the fourm.  Forum might go days with nothing posted.  I started the Coffee Pot as a daily thread.  Elliot suggested that we make it a continous thread.  So, April 1, 2004 I was in Savanah GA at Bass Pro Shops for an event.  From the Holiday Inn Express, I started the continous Coffee Pot thread.  It was the longest running thread in the history of Kalmbach with the most posts.  Suddenly Kalmbach management [not CTT] said we were taking up too much server space.  That is when we went to this type of Coffee Pot.  From the original posters, immediately Buckeye came on and then others followed.  Always been more Yanks than Rebs but we still put up a fight. Sigh

Off to the lake house for a few.

A little Southern history for you Yanks before I walk out the door.

The Eagles Farm Bell was mounted on a wooden tower behind the “big” house. Was rung in the mornings to start work, again at 11:30 for dinner [now called lunch] and 1:00 PM to go back to work. Again in the evenings to stop work and come to supper. Was rung 5 days a week. Several farms in the area had them. Each had its own sound. If rung any other times than the above, it was an emergency calling for help. When I was little, I was allowed to pull and pull on the rope until I could ring it at the above times. I thought I was big. Wink Daddy had it mounted on steel pipe and concreted it in near his drive in Edgecombe. When Mom died and the house was given away, I had Gerald [the guy renting the farm] dig it up with his backhoe. Concrete was so large, we had to cut the pipe off at the concrete level to bring it here to Rolesville. Been in my back yard since Feb. Finally got a big section of pipe that was larger than the original. Concreted it in the ground and slid the old pipe down inside. Painted it with a fresh coat of Rustoleum. It is loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A weather vane goes on top but I have to “recondition” it and paint it. See below.

Gone.

Chief, thanks for the photos of the bell.  That was a wonderful story about the old days in the South.  You must be proud of your family heritage.  It's a fortunate thing to have something that goes that far back.   According to our family history, there was a big house at some point but the details have been hard to find.  I imagine a lot of things were lost in the war between the states.

Evenin' Fellas

Susan picked Christina up from daycare today. She did really good. Smile She got a lady bug sticker on her daily report! Thumbs Up I know all the kids probably get them, but it really did my heart good to see it, that and it is her first sticker EVER!

She's been sleeping since she got home too... not sure I like that because she is probably going to be up in a couple hours.

Chief - neat story, great picks!

Good Evening

Angel for Chuck - Keep going on the Therapy - especially the ones in WHITE!

Long day yesterday, ended with our own ceremony... which almost brought a tear to my eye.  Was thanked by the local politicos for my service...it was appreciated, but I'm not someone special...just a guy with a funny helmet...

Chief, Dad has a bell out back from the USS Simpson  yeah it's LOUD alright...and you need to drop that name of the guy from Jersey...Smile, Wink & Grin

Harley and I took a little trip Saturday Night....have put almost 200 miles on it since last week.  'bout time....Sigh

Best friend's Mom past Friday, had to run to get the Princess then the opposite way to the viewing tonight then run her back for classes...viewing was 2-6 and make it difficult but not impossible.  Had White Castle for dinner on the fly.  Princess was happy.....

That's all from Exit 8 --- enjoyed the Harvest Moon tonight....big and bright and the Bambi's (no, Chuck, not THAT kind) were out and about...

See ya Soon

Rich - prayers for your friend.

Chuck - prayers, bro.

RIJ - dogs are the best.  Sorry for your friend's loss.

Chief - Neat bell and that pole is awesome too.  Great story man - glad you are keeping it "alive" to pass down in your family Thumbs Up

Congrats to the birthday "pups" too, sorry I forgot to mention before.

Prayers for Lady James, Sir James, and their kingdom.

Char had a doc appointment today and got results on her transplant.  Her bonemarrow is 100 percent transplant and engrafted, so that's great news.  The fiber stuff was at 4+ on a scale of 0 to 4?  Right now it is 2+/4.  He said she will catch every little bug that comes home or goes to work.  She needs to get a flu shot and so does all the family.  They also want to redo all immunizations, but can't do that until she is off some of the meds, so  that will be a while.  He'll see her every 3 weeks again now.

TARDIS is ready, so let's get a move on guys!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Late evening all!

Fifer - boy were you right about that....congrats to fifepup on his B-Day!

Chief - too bad you had to tell that story about the bell you took off the new fire truck...but it does look nice!

Jack - matched the record (69 days) today - 103 - might hit 105 tomorrow and 100 Wed and then 90 on Thurs. Also sorry about your friends dog. Our 12 yr old dog (lab/retriever mutt) is getting pretty long in the tooth and she recently had a benign tumor and a large cyst removed.

Brent - glad it is going well with Christina!

Jim (sturgeon) - is that addition going to house trains?

SJ - glad to hear the surgery for Granny went well!

Uh DougdaG - bacon waffles - prescribed by your doc?

Brutus - good to hear Char is doing even better!

SubmmBob - sounds like pretty country where the scope is.

Good to hear from all the rest of the group but I did not see a Chuck post today? Hope you had a good day today Chuck!

Have a great evening all!

Good evening all,

We had our first class Physical Training session this morning.  It was an easy day to make sure everyone understood the program.  My smaller running had an easy 2-mile run.  Many of the classes we had today were slow and boring; mostly lectures.  I prefer the classes we have when everyone interacts.  The Dolphins lost to the Pats which is no surprise.  The Raiders-Broncos game is entertaining.  The Yankees won again tonight.

SJ - I'm glad Granny's procedure went well.  I hope she recovers well and soon so you don't burn the house down.

Brutus - That is fantastic news about Char's transplant.  I'll pray this process continues to go well.

Jack - I needed to get ahead on the reading so I could watch the football games.

Rich - I'm sorry about your friend's loss.  I'll pray for his comfort.

Chief - That's a great story, thanks for sharing it.

Good night,

Joe

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 80s.  Weather permitting, will play soccer under the lights at 8 PM tonight.  Yesterday started off badly, but work went well and got a lot done at home last night.  As AJ would say, "All in all, it was a good day."  Bacon and biscuits are headed to "Points East" on the dining car this AM along with prayers for continued recovery.  TBIL after the game and have the banilla ready.  I hope everyone has a good day.  Chief, good story about the bell, and good recap on the pot.  I can testify as to how "lively" this forum before the Pot came along,

Keep on training,

Aloha. That's sounds delicious, RT, not a mistake. Chief, that's a neat story - I bet that bell is loud. Nice day again today. Schooling, a meeting or two and then Kelly returns later this afternoon. Good news all around - Christina, Char and Granny's operation.

Good afternoon all,

Dennis I suspect the Chief would have the information you seek.  I think he was the one that started the coffee pot.

Nothing but 9/11 history on all day yesterday.  I finally gave up and watched some of it last night.  It always makes me mad but if it helps the victims have any closure maybe it has value.  TV has shown Pearl Harbor to death.  Now they have something new.

Ran some trains this morning until it got too warm.  No derailments or run through switches.  Put on all four units of my ATSF ABBA F units with two powered and ran with a 7 car silver train.

Keep up the recovery on Blueberry Hill.

Buckeye, thanks for the update

Later,

Ray

TV has a way of running news items into the ground. And don't you wander if the 9/11 terrorists aren't loving every minute of it?

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Crystal Clear Taxachusetts,

I was able to tackle half of the lawn yesterday since it was finally dry enough to cut, albeit it was a bit tall.  I was out there mowing about two hours.  The part I mowed was the rear, and it appears with the fertilizer and all of the rain we have gotten that I will get through another season in the turf war.......dog versus grass.  Not too many bare spots worn to the nub by Maximus.  Will reach the low 80s today but I noticed we had an overnight low of 48 within the past few nights, 53 last night.  Will someone please provide me with a rational explanation why my son was running his bedroom A/C all night last night?  Bang Head

Chuck........that is great news.  I know you may be tired of hearing it, but have patience with the PT, buddy.  You have been on quite the ride the past four weeks.  Good things will come with time and work.  I just hope you don't get headaches from eye strain in the next two weeks.  Whistling  Pass on our best to Paula.  Wish we all could be there with you.

SJ.......I imagine Granny is feeling a bit punk right now but hope she is improving.   I figure your cheerful, smiling face should set things right......the one you have on display when you are playing trains with Charlie and the gang.

Rich......sorry to hear about the passing of your best friend's Mom.  Those can be some emotionally trying services, and not just for the family.  I am certain your friend and the family were comforted by your appearance with the Princess.  You have to admit, the upheaval you have lived through during the past year has plunked you down in a very good place; and a lot is going so well right now for you.  These have been tough times, but you made things happen. Thumbs Up

SP Ray.......sorry to hear your back is still not cooperating.  Angel you find some relief soon.  What does your Doc suggest?

Roy.....I was glad to hear your pup's cyst and tumor were nothing to be overly concerned about.  We had the same issue with our Border Collie.Husky mutt, Ashley, when she was about 12.  We were told the benign fatty tumors our dog had are common occurences in most older dogs and were of little concern.  The vet recommended leaving them alone unless they were in a spot that makes the dog uncomfortable.  Wife wanted them removed anyway.  Bang Head  Of course, she got more over time.  Ashley was my son's 10th birthday present, and she was a great dog.  We had her for nearly 16 years despite the tumors and a torn anterior cruciate ligament we had repaired when she was 10.  Ya can't beat a mutt!!!!!!

RT........I once ate part of what I thought was a packet of beef jerky.  Didn't care much for the taste.  My wife saw the open packet sitting on the kitchen counter and started lecturing me about giving the dog too many dog treats.  I didn't tell her I ate them.  Figured she didn't need any more ammo to use on me  Shoulda read the label.  Laugh

RaySP.........glad to hear you are enjoying coaching the little guys.  With all that they see on TV, it is difficult to keep them focused on the basics.  It is also great to hear you will have the addition under roof well before the SNOHIO flies and before Chuck's sometimes errant aim with the snow cannon dumps on you.  Laugh

Brent........glad to hear Christina's first day at daycare went well. Thumbs Up  And I hope she did get up in the middle of the night.  Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!  Stick out tongue

Chief........I enjoyed the pictures and the history behind your dad's farm bell.  You do excellent work!!!  And it is a special piece that will be handed down to keep tradition and family history alive and well.  Thumbs Up  re the flossing, I thought REBS only have a tooth or two to floss.  Smile, Wink & Grin

JoeyD.......smart man, getting your homework done so you could goof off and watch the football game between the Dolphins and the Patriots.  I am depending on you  and AF Ray to boost my baseball spirits.  Whistling  The Red Sox had an abundance of solid starting pitchers to start the season and now are missing their 1-2-3 starters.  Except for the schedule, it doesn't look good here on out to the playoffs.

MikeC........you've got some beautiful fall weather with some cooler temps for soccer. Thumbs Up

V8 Dennis.......re the POT and forum stats, you are only 11,121 posts behind the Chief.  You can catch him!!!! Stick out tongue

DougM........the natural grass at Soldier Field was looking a bit ragged during the game Sunday.  I can't imagine what it will look like by Halloween.

Pat.........I agree.  Too much media coverage of 911 has some very real downsides.

LAZ.....are the leaves beginning to turn yet down your way in the hills?  They are here.  With all of the rain we have had up my way, that usually means the peak Fall viewing will be moved back a couple of weeks.

Gotta run.  Later, gang.

Jack

Good Morning

72, going to be a nice day.

Haven't talked to granny yet this morning. They were doing something with her. I'll see her after lunch. I know she will be in pain and I will surely get growled at today. Supper with Charlie tonight and then I may have to go into the kitchen. Almost as scary as visiting granny today...S.J.

good evening everyone.  Quick post as I have a dinner engagement I have to get to.  Great news on Chuck!  He had better watch them wanderring eyes when Miss Paula comes around!

Jack, sorry about your friend.  Our dogs have been a huge part of our family life and when they have died, it really hurts.  Amazing animals...I think God gave us dogs that we can see what love can really look like.  Imagine getting welcomed by family the way your dog does when you come home!

Brutus, been saying prayers for Miss Char.  Pray that she is up to full health real soon.

Chief, great story about the bell.  I enjoy hearing such family stories.  Wish we had some to pass along.  Regarding the Pot, it has been great.  While some of the faces have changed over time, it is still great to come and chat with folks.  All too often, we live our lives without enjoying a little peaceful time with friends.

It was a good day.  Had early morning bible study, followed by work.  A few long cases, but the day was good.  Have some work to get to and then that dinner I mentioned.

Hope everyone has a blessed night.

Pat -- thanks for the nice comment about the John Deere loco pic on our layout, sure has been a fun project.

I am back to civilization for a few days (Denver) for some rest, since Sept. 5 I've been on the road with the Goldwing in Colorado logging about 2200  wonderful miles so far.  I have less than a week before I get back home but the majority of the wonderful miles are behind me, I can't tell you how beautiful south west CO is at this time of year--drop dead gorgeous.  Was thinking about one of our forum members as I was close to Dove Creek near Cortez but needed to keep moving as it was a long day.  It has been great to learn more about the narrow gauge rail road history of Colorado, amazing history and work ethic of those men.

I did go over Trailridge Road this morning on the bike, 41 degrees at the top (thankfully no snow) and now it's 77 in Denver, love those mountains.  I did see Amtrak in Granby, that was fun, it was even on time!

Great news about Chuck, Char, and Granny SJ today.

SJ - just passing something my wife learned the hard way in her knee surgery recovery - Don't skimp on the pain pills during therapy.  My wife did, and it slowed her recovery down some.

Thanks for well wishes and prayers.  Continued prayers for Chuck and Paula too.

Doc called today and they reduced one of Char's meds to one pill per day (2mg).

Well, ebay stepped in and I'll be getting my money back plus original shipping on it. I'll be out a few bucks overall and will never ever buy from that guy again.

Overall, I have had good luck on ebay, but a very few times you get a real lemon.

Patrick - you got that right, I think the bad guys probably did 24 hours of recording Sunday so they can enjoy it over and over.

Tardis is ready and we have to pick up Jimbo and take him out for icecream, cause he ate all the banilla for breakfast!?!?!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good to see Chuck droppin' in. Yes

Prayers continue for Chuck & Paula, Char and Granny SJ.

Roy, I use "heart healthy pancake mix and low sodium bacon". Dinner

Jon, That is one great ride over Trailridge Rd, fantastic views.

Still been kinda draggin' since overdoing it last friday but not as bad as I was on saturday & sunday. Did manage to choke down an In-N-Out burger last night though.

Brutus, Glad to hear the issue is being resolved. I've only been disapointed with one transaction but it was my fault for not using due diligence.

Good morning all,

It is supposed to be rainy in SE Indiana, but none so far.  A good day yesterday.  Work went well.  Weather was perfect for the game last night and we tied 3-3.  I was goalie for the first half and only gave up one score.  Perhaps Hope Solo could have stopped it, but not mere mortals.  Sarah Fisher and her husband had a baby girl, Zoey Marie.  Mother and daughter are doing fine.  Wife and I had a nice supper before the game as well, and she is starting to move things out of boxes from dad's house and putting them on the walls over here.  We are getting more space back in the house.   Life is not bad right now.  I had bacon and biscuits again on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on "Points East".  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana
