Greetings from Siberia, NJ,
We had about 9,000 customers out this morning. I was in Raritan Center in Edison, a big flash in the sky like they were taking a picture and then darkness. We had the power back on in minutes. I did not hear what the problem was.
RI Jack, I am lucky that I do not have neighbors like yours. Everyone helps each other out and we all check on the elderly. My son is always on hand with the blower, plow or shovel. Not bad for an 18 year old.
Don Baker, The layout is loking good.
Traindood, Don't tell me. Outside looks like the ice castle scene from Dr. Zhivago. (I hope that I spelled it right) That is my wife's favorite scene. She loves that movie.
8n, I agree that I would rather have a large snow accumulation than this ice.
Pat, I watched the tractor pulls on RFD TV this morning. I wish my cable had it.
EVERYONE, PLEASE BE CAREFUL. DON'T OVERDUE IT.
Back to work now,
John
Happy birthday RT.
Taking a break from shoveling while my tootsies warm up. It really is a pleasant day outside - a little crisp at 9 degrees, but dressed properly, it is no trouble.
Got about 20" of snow in the back yard and about 14" on the front sidewalk. I'm not going anywhere until a plow comes down my street. I'm 1/2 a block away from a main street that is passable, but.....
I'd rather deal with deep snow than the the ice that other folks have.
I'm about 3 hours west of Brutus. The southern edge of the storm got him, the center of the storm ran over me.
Take it easy with the storm clean up folks. Clean sidewalks are not worth slip & fall injuries or heart attacks.
Might even run some trains this afternoon.
All for now.
hello: greetings from Iceland (read Sparta N.J.) adding to your missive on hydrant clearing, we live on a private road and been plowing/ snowblowing for years without so much as a you know what. actually i don't want any attaboys; just get out of the way when i'm doin' my thing! my motto: do good and disappear. besides if we i don't clear the road, wifey can't get to the mall, YIKES!!
Think good thoughts, do good deeds!
HBD RT!
Hi GUYZ again,
Just got done with shoveling the driveways 2 me and neighborlady. About a inch and a half of sleet and water, heavy stuff. Took about 45 minutes. Also got done with run on treadmill and weights. Watched the FURRY GROUNDHOG PUNXATAUNY PHIL, he said NO SHADOW so early spring!!!!!
JACK, good job on those firehidrants. All the dogs in the neighborhood are greatfull!!!!!
Staying frosty here,
laz57
Just to let everyone know, still around. Been working on a layout (part time job), its been a LOT of fun. Especially when it comes around to introducing a person to Command Control. Most of the track work is done, waiting on some switches for the final loop from Ross. Have the wiring done as much as possible, (my part). Working on a Control Panel design. Here's a couple of pics;
Going to do some Operation Training today.
Finally, got all the car windows fixed and working, plumbing resolved. Now have a couple of computer issues to get taken care of. Yesterday, was a great day, got an order for the Academy Awards coming up, that is ALWAYS good.
Sure hope Doug gets that canon under control! Looks like there is a pretty good chance I may make it to York this year, so want to make sure the snow is melted first. Really hope all you guys come through this winter storm OK. Sounds like a great time to stay at home!
Happy Birthday RT !!!
Take care, I wont be such a stranger! But sure having a great time with the layout.
Oh yeah, considering get involved with the club again. But only on a limited basis, operationally, and be able to take advantage of the friendships that were developed.
Don
HudsonJohn......stay safe brother. Ice and power lines don't mix. DougM and NavyJack, hope you are stocked up with frozen pizzas and beer.
Just got back in from the never ending snow removal and car cleaning for some coffee and a break. Slow and steady, boys. The tortoise wins the race. And the older tortoises avoid a visit to the cardiologist in the emergency room.
The current Taxachusetts weather forecast has moved some of the battle lines around in the area. The snow amount forcast near the coast (me) for today was downgraded from the 8-16" range to 6-9"..... in addition to the 6-8" we received yesterday and the 4" we received overnight.
Warnings on the news to "clear the unshovelled stuff asap" fill the news as today's accumulation will be wet and HEAVY. Then it freezes, ice. The rising temperatures (now 30) when added to the snow, sleet, and freezing rain we are getting today will make the weight of the unmoved stuff far worse. Flat top roof cave-ins (and canopy collapses at gas stations) continue from the weight of the snow, but today's additional accumulation should be the coup ge gras.
Some businesses with flat roofs have realized they have a disaster waiting to happen. They have dispatched crews to haul snowblowers up on top to move the snow off the roofs.
The newspeople are advising individual homeowners to remove snow from their roofs, which I think is a very dangerous and ill-advised recommendation! If you think about the latter, you can just picture folks slipping and falling off ladders and their roofs. I unilaterally voted for mother nature to take her course with my roof, easier to deal with a roof issue that a broken neck, no matter how you slice it.
An elderly woman (81) lives on the other side of my road, saw her wandering around her snow covered driveway this morning in her bathrobe. She has a whole crew that normally comes and clears her snow, but they hadn't shown up yet. Landscapers' Winter employment. So I walked over to see what was the matter. She was out looking for her Wall Street Journal!!!! After sending her back inside her house, I searched for the newspaper to no avail, concluded It hadn't been delivered yet, told her so, and then said it would better for her to stay put indoors until her crew had cleared her snow.
The fire hydrant across the street was buried again by the snowplow crews, must be cleared, and it appears none of my neighbors are bellying up to help clear it, yet again. So that will be my project later in the day when I have caught up with my own snow. I think I am going to have to say something to the slackers, like "Can you help me, please?" Better yet, clear it, say nothing, all the while aiming the snowblower stack onto one guy's driveway. Bet that will get him going. Then I can chat with him about "shared" responsibility. "Or do you expect me to do all of the work to keep you and your family safe?"
On the more serious side, the elderly are in peril unless they have someone to help them with the snow. Many folks have to work and can't get to it until they return home. For those with just a snow shovel, I pity them. For youse guys out there on the POT, elderly is defined as 20 years older than I am, and the definition stays the same every year.
And then there is a catch 22.
Folks like me (with a snowblower) see neighbors without a snowblower or without a snow removal service. In their driveways and in their garages sit the latest and comparitively expensive cars. You see them out there fighting against the elements with nothing but a snowshovel. Do you help them, or do you let them figure it out? The extra coin they repeatedly overspend for a car could be better spent on dealing with the responsibilities that come with home ownership and the inevitable New England weather.
Investing in an effective snowblower is dropping a relative pittance, $1,000-$1,500. Could spend less for alternatively hiring a removal service for a Winter. These folks spend double to triple that amount each and every year in automobile depreciation alone!!!!!!!!!!! They could buy a more modest vehicle, then buy a new snow blower, throw it out at season's end, and get a new one every year thereafter !!!!! And still be money ahead!
My wife is fed up with no one helping out with the fire hydrant clearing. And more so with what she feels are certain neighbors (without snowblowers) who are taking advantage of others (with snowblowers) while their driveways are filled with very nice cars and have landscapers to mow their lawns all Spring, Summer, and Fall.
I'm beginning to think she is right, that they need to reprioritize, they need to learn their lesson the hard way, and they need to stop depending on others.
Jack.
IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.
Aloha all. Dang, I forgot to unplug the snow cannon overnight. Well, it seems to be fading. But the wind is up and the cooooooold is coming. Drifts over me head when I went out before.. But maybe just about 2 ft. on the ground. The only folks out are dog owners. Quick, give me pointers on looking busy so I don't have to go outside again. I can't figure out photos here anymore.

Good Morning
Weather guessers were wrong. I'm not sure how much snow we got as the wind howled all night. About 5 inches in the driveway. Grandson and son/IL are coming to clear it for us. Everyone stay safe...S.J.

Hudson#685 Good Morning from the frozen tundra of NJ, Everything is covered in at least 1/4" of ice. Driving is terrible. Right now it is quiet at the shop. RI Jack, The bad part about going to NC was that they paid us in Confederate Script and Goober kept saying, "Hey'. Ernest T kept breaking windows and saying, "It's me it's me, I'm Ernest T". John

8ntruck It works! You guys can stop the snow cannon test! We've gotten about 8" since 7am. More coming. We shut the plant down at 10:30 this morning to make sure everybody got home. I finished up what I was doing and left about noon. Helped push the plant manager's Mustang out of the lot. A low car with fat tires is not the winning combination today. Just watching the snow drift around. All for now.

Off to vet to pick up Finn. Changed his singing from base to tenor.

SPMan - It was I who recently lost a Lassie-dog. It was nice of you to think of me. I mentioned it to Ms Kelly...she just ain't ready. (I am tinkering with pet shipping rates coast-to-coast out of curiosity). If we lived close by, we might take a look, but I'm sure she wants to wait and do the whole puppy thingy when we move to WV. Thanks just the same.
Time to take littlest princess to mardigras.
Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
It is 42 degrees. Very windy. No rain, no snow, no ice. I hope it stays this way.
Today is an easy day. No plans to go out. I have a few chores to do and then I will relax. Maybe run trains later.
Doug Murphy....UNPLUG THE CANNON.
RT.....
Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.
Y'all have a great Wednesday.

8n, Your manager with a Mustang in the snow, I have a nut who brought his Honda sport bike in a major snow storm. He claimed that it is better in the snow. One of the guys took him home after he could not make it passed the parking lot.
RT, Happy Belated Birthday.
Mike C, I wish the best for your dad.
John Bakeer, Your turn for the nasty weather will come.
The lights just blinked. I guess the fun is about to start.
Thoughts and prayers for all in need.
Good luck to all during the storms.
Nice and mild here in Stockport UK. I see on the news you guys are in for a big storm. Hope you all get through safely and not too much damage.
I'm getting better, only took me one day to find the new Pot.

Evenin' Y'all,
to RT !
Joe, Hope those pipes aren't frozen enuff to rupture when they thaw out. When we lived up in the Colo mntns we always left a select faucet or two just slightly running during the 20/30 -* periods to prevent freeze-ups.
Don't think my arthritis could take those kinds of temps anymore, sometimes when it gets close to freezing here my shoulders just don't move very well. Thank goodness for very hot showers.
Got a real chuckle watching the weather channel when the two "weather guessers" in Chicago got surprised by some thunder & lightning, by their reactions I would guess that they had to change their skivvies after that segment.
Be safe all and don't overdue it with snow & ice removal, and with the way the temps are dropping frostbite is a major hazard.
Nite All.

Good Evnin' Ya'll From Snowy Taxachusetts,
Got 6" of the white stuff today from storm #1. Overnight 2" expected. Tomorrow storm #2 hits, coming up from the South, but the 8-16" forecast for me has been downgraded to 6-10" with a switch to sleet. DougM and NavyJack are getting hit pretty good Northwest and West of Chicago. I heard a news story about stranded motorists out in Rockford (a few miles from NavyJack). I realize neither of youse guyz know what to do with your time while you are housebound. If you need sage advice on how to effectively goof off while looking busy and productive, give SJ a call.
My apologies to RT for these belated wishes for a Happy Birthday. I believe that is #56 for the Northern transplant. HAPPY B-DAY RT !!!!!!!
Dennis......your eye injury has started to worry me. Dial things down a notch and get well.
Time to grab some ZZZZZZZZZZZZs.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RT - Sorry, I didnt remember in time to say it earlier!
Relaxing day at home watching the sleet build up on the roads and deck. Snow is coming now, but due to a pressure area, it will only be a couple inches. Our office opens at 8 AM, but liberal leave policy is in place so I will take off. There isn't really a good chance I could get up my hill here at the house, but if I did there would be 2 more worse hills before I got to the main road Not gonna even try tomorrow!
Read some in the new CTT - good issue again boys, keep it up!
Glad your Dad is hanging in there, Mike. Prayers continue.
Working on track plans a bit with some good books I've been reading. De-Icers are on full with Atomic Batteries to Power. TARDIS is ready to fly, so let's hit the road!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
RT I thought it was Fifey that lost a Collie but don't have his E mail address.

Aloha. Wow, is it RT's birthday?!
Dang, this snow-cannon is out of control. I think I broke it with the switch on. It's crazy outside. The whole house is shaking, everything blowing sideways. We even had thunder. Glad we have buried utilities. Think this blizzard should be named.Glad I left early today. We're closed tomorrow for the first time in forever. Got to see the CTA's diesel locos on the L with snow-sweepers... Good thing Chicago has nearly 300 plows - and 50 snowmobiles...
Good evening all,
We had a great day being snowed in. We completed a jigsaw puzzle, drank hot chocolate, played games, and watched some wholesome family programming (The Military Channel). We also had a couple of snowball fights and did some shoveling. We only had about five or six inches of snow, but because the wind here is crazy we ended up with some large snowdrifts. A couple of our pipes are frozen, but most of the house still has water. They probably will not thaw out until Friday since it will remain well below 32 until then. Tonight's low is six degrees and school is already cancelled for tomorrow, but I should be at work.
Navyjack - I'm not in the recruiting business. My hours are very flexible since my job can be very hectic at times. When things are not too busy I can leave the office at a decent hour. It makes up for all the time I am away from home.
RI Jack - Yes, I finally got my wish, and I made the most of it. We may get some more snow Monday. You're right, the wind here is crazy and the snow does blow sideways. It always seems to accumulate in my driveway somehow.
It’s time to spend some quality time with the wife.
Good night,
Joe
Evening all
Rain and 43 out. Sure beats snow and ice. Going to have a quiet now the kids are in bed. Going to do a little reading then prayers, going to incude Dennis' eye, Mike's dad, Char in special intentions.

ray that was fifedog. don't know how he is about that idea or your neighbor is about that idea.
Well not a lot going on tonight. Had what I thought was something other than what I picked up at wal-mart i picked up cheese enchiladas and thought I picked up cheese enchiladas.
So much for my birthday dinner didn't really care for it but it was my own doing not looking closely at the box.
Well taking it easy for rest of the night work tomorrow. Talk to you all later have a good one.

Good afternoon all, neighbor next door told me that the animal control people came by today and told him he had to get rid of three of his collie dogs because the city ordinance only allows two. He has five all together. I don't know who blew the whistle on him but somebody complained. The dogs do bark a lot but so do a lot of other dogs around here. I have overlooked the barking because my neighbor is a good person and hasn't bothered me. I told him I was sorry it didn't work out for his dogs. I don't know if he will sell the dogs are what. He said they are pure bred collies and I assume they have papers. Somebody on the forum lost a collie a while back I think. Don't know what it would cost to ship an animal like that or if it would be worth it if anyone was interested. If so I will pass the word along to my neighbor or give him your E mail.
Good afternoon all,
It is messy in SE Indiana, but not as bad (yet) as the rest of the state. I called into work, and there 6 out of about 35 people in our division who made it in. They are sending those workers home at 3 and may close the state offices tomorrow as well. It is really bad in Indy. I went outside to get the paper and bring the trashcan back around. Power is still on and as long as that holds, we will be ok. Dad is hunkering down as well and drinking a lot of Ensures. That is a good sign. I have been cleaning the house and the "suacy wench" and I have been watching old TV shows on Antenna TV. I hope all who are caught up in this mess stay safe. I had bran muffins on the dining car for breakfast. TBIL with the de-icers on full power. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,
Mike C. from Indiana
dwiemer Good afternoon Y'all! It is cloudy out, but in the 60s. Currently watching the Galloping Goose program that was on RFD-TV. DVR'ed it and finally getting around to viewing it. Didn't know there were so many variations. Had a good day so far, went in early to set up for today's case. Then, went to church for the discipleship class, and back to the hospital to do the case. I got some award for some work I had done back in December. They give me a choice of a bunch of different things, but I didn't see the leg lamp. Have to go pick up the kids soon and then back home for some relaxation. Wife will be bringing daughter to ballet, and then we have violin practice. With any luck, I have a few things I want to get done on the layout. Hope everyone is having a great day.Dennis

Dennis I think you need to get your eyes checked as you can see there it is right in front of you.
Hope all having a good day just relaxing here. Did build my 3 trailors for the layout and added some trees and put the flag pole from the trailors set in front of the school Thought that it looked better there than in front of the trailors. Wife got me a Jd tractor but I think its a little big but she tries so I put it in front of the barn. its bigger than my bull dozers oh well its the thought.
talk to you all later.
