Good Morning all

Nice but really busy weekend.  I had a meeting Saturday in Columbus that took most of the day, then preached at Vigil Mass Saturday evening.  I was preaching at all the Masses this weekend so Sunday was a blur, with a Baptisms and receptions after both Sunday Masses.  After all that loaded the debris from the garage tear off and yard clean-up into a dumpster.  A little more loading to do so I’ll swing by for an hour or two on the way home from work.

Jim – I got the green 650’s and 718;  I’ll tell you more about them when I receive them.

Chief – Let me know about how the sprayer works out;  I’ll be painting the house we’re fixing up soon.  It is block with aluminum siding on the gables so it should be easy to paint.

Laz is probably working on the projects to get them done before school starts.

Got to get started

May God bless

Aloha all from a grey and humid Chicago. Sending morning storms off to Sir J and Mike C. Tried to sabbath yesterday. Hunted frogs with the youngest, etc. It is hard with so much that needs doing. Bought a new mower: found a big cordless electric (I've had a corded electric for almost ten years) for a good price at our local Menards (home improvement store). Looks like a busy week here. Sounds like you accomplished much, Brutus. Glad to see the Chief back. Too bad I'll be in NYC at the end of Nov.  Prayers for John's friend. Hope dinner came off.  Looking forward to hearing about the Eastern gathering-of-the-Pot.

The heat and humidity is settling back in this week in Taxachusetts-land, with some much needed rain in the forecast.  The lawn is getting crunchy in spots.  The shark off of the Cape beaches are still busy feeding close to shore and keeping the beachgoers closer to their beach towels.  Dinner  The drive back from NH last night with the wife and the dog was beautiful with the sunroof open and the cooler, less humid summer breezes.

I spent 3+ hours mowing yesterday morning.  Those in my realm of acquaintence who keep telling me how good the exercise is, walking behind a 22" cut self-propelled mower, bagging and composting as I go, are of course those who don't have to do it themselves in 90+ degree sun with the humidity to match.  Feels good when it's done, though.  What I love is when I finish, collapse in a chair in the shade with my ice water and soda at hand, sweating profusely and looking beyond filthy from the dust, and the wife strolls out of the house fresh as a daisy and cheerily remarks that I failed to weed her flower gardens and water them adequately.  Banged Head

Brutus.....prayers continue for Char.  It must be frustrating with the fine tuning, but you must be so happy with what 2010 has delivered.  It sounds like you are winning the basement resto war.  Will that be the home for a new layout?

SubBob.....glad to hear you are back behind the wheel and mobile again.  Can your tattoos be far behind?  Big Smile

JimSP......the last guy to stain our house's wood clapboard siding used both a spraygun and a paintbrush.  The job went faster and the results were the best we've had in 22 years.  Thorough, even, no paint lines, and no up and down ladders with the paint.  He cut in the trim by hand, last of course.

Rich......glad to hear the pieces are falling into place.  I agree with the others, you need to change that "NJ exile" thing.  Was thinking of you and Bob when the SIL and I dropped into a "cruise night" at a nearby venue Saturday.  It was great to see both the works in progress and finished restoration projects.  What I appreciate is the effort and the dream.  What I hate to hear from some are the criticisms, some of them not so private......probably from folks who never tried to bring some old iron back to life themselves and envy those who are.  Labor of love.

NavyJack.....good luck with your Doc search for the wifey.  You will be successful.  Missions like this usually are when you keep hammering away. Thumbs Up

Chief.....I need you for my next door neighbor.  You'd cut this old Yankee's grass for him, wouldn't you?  I might get some of your tomatoes in the process.  Wink

Spanky.....thanks again for the pics and video of the UP with the 105 car consist.  And just 3 engines doing all of the hauling.  WOW!  Listen to Dennis on this PT impasse.  Guidelines and caps are just that, for the bread and butter cases and scenarios.  There are legitimate exceptions which can get approved.

Yes.....we all miss Laz.  Hope he has sreared clear of the bear.

Prayers for those that need them.  Angel

Later, gang.

Jack.

Good morning,

I had a busy weekend and had not posted in a couple of days.  On Saturday, I had house chores and went shopping for school supplies.  The list gets longer every year.  On Sunday, we went to church and then I spent the afternoon calling family.  I had some layout time in the evening.  I worked on the tunnel portals.  It did not progress as quickly as I wanted, but so far it is okay.  I also learned spray paint eats away at foam.  I knew certain glues did, but was not informed about paint.  It is strictly indoor latex paint from here on out.  I still have yet to hook up the K-Line whistle controller I received since the 1044 will not sound the modern whistle.

There is a chance for rain today and I hope it comes.  The rest of the week looks to be very hot once again: over 100.  I'm still playing catch up on this weekend's posts.  Sorry if I missed any significant events.  I hope all is well.

Regards,

Joe

S.J. it is true confessions time. Some 45 years ago I was spray staining my fence and it drifted over onto my neighbor's new Cadillac. Fortunately he was a good friend and helped me wax it out. I still remember it. A lesson learned!

MTH [I am almost sure] has a diesel in Original NS.  Think I will buy it if Miss Edna still has it.

Chief, you are correct.  MTH did make a VO1000 Baldwin switch engine painted and lettered for the "original" Norfolk and Southern Railway.  I bought one myself.  I was hoping they would do a Baldwin AS616 in the same road name and color.  The old NS had AS614's mainly but they look about the same.  They only had two of the engines MTH made on their roster.  They were not allowed in long haul service because their axle weight was too heavy for the bridge over the Albemarle Sound.  The AS614 was bigger but had more axles (six) so they were allowed on the bridge.

Regarding your SIL clock.  I have a DIL with the same problem.  If they say they will be somewhere at three o'clock, I always figure six o'clock.

Good Afternoon from Central Jersey,

Well, the job hunt rolls on, have a couple of leads.  If nothing happens by Friday, Monday I'll head for the temp agency downtown.  At least I'll have something.

Went to visit my trains and stuff yesterday, kinda miss it, but when I get a job, I'll start looking for an place then.  Princess says shes coming home in June.  She's doing well and happy, which makes me feel better.  We talk everyday.

Thanks RT & Jack, I have updated my Avatar to finally reflect my status.  Just got back from a fire call, and thats fantastic.  I've missed my guys and the rush.  I'm getting in there and doing my thing, slowly but surely, to get my mojo back.

Have a train show next weekend, which I will be attending, in Edison, NJ.  Mom wanted to come with me, but they are on vacation in NC (Chief, look east and wave...thanks).  Purchases are probably not warrented, just a look see, but, hey, ya never know....Smile,Wink, & Grin

Weather has been great, a far cry from the high heat and humidity of the SOUTH.  Honestly, I don't miss it at all, but I am more tolerant of the "heat" that's here.

Last night had a picnic dinner at the park with a close friend, talked and watched the stars until 11 PM.  Saw 2 shooting stars and made 2 wishes for me, I felt I could use a couple right now.

Thanks for the support, guys.  This hasn't been easy, but this is my dream and so far it's been to plan.  I really feel blessed knowing you guys are my friends.  My friends and family have supported me and my daughter, and that's just the best.  Thanks!

check back later!

PS - REALLY looking forward to the CPERG (Coffee Pot Eastern Regional Gathering) at Fife's!!  Hope to see you there!!

Rich, I see you have that ugly looking ASST Chief helmet on your avatar....when you going to get a leather New Yorker with the shield????  Glad you are in good spirits and that you are getting some run time in.  I hear the boys in my old digs are catching a number of jobs lately.

Chief, sounds like a good win-win for both of you.  You get your house painted, he gets some quality time with his son and the use of the lake house.  Sounds great.

Kids had their first full day of school.  They seem pretty excited about the coming year.  We like both teachers and they should learn much.

Sure wish I could make it up to the gathering, but it doesn't look like I will be getting away any time soon.  Hope to see some fun photos and hear some great stories from it though.

Have a great day,
Dennis

Good eventide, gentle sirs!  Alooooha!  Smile  Paint overspray?!  I stained my deck and the siding on the back of my house out about 11 feet thanks to a sudden wind and facing the wrong way, lol!  That siding was replaced a few years ago, but you can still see some on the screens.  Good stain, really has help up well Laugh  After that, I used flood style with rollers.  I was never able to completely clean all the vinyl siding even using goop and comet in a mixture.

Tried Home Depot for replacement brushes for the dremel, but they don't have them.  I'll check Lowes tomorrow.  Next stop would be sears I guess?  Don't want to really, but I found I can order them online, so might do that.  About 10 times cheaper than a new dremel tool!

Picked up another 90 degree elbow for the last vent, but I decided to put another vent at the bottome of the stairs, set in the wall.  I found a register box that is adjsutable for ceilings or walls - has expansion bars to hold it in place etc.  Should be perfect.  A little surgery on that first vent I installed to replace a bend with a T and I should be good to go.

Jack - it's just stressful waiting for decisions and then notification and then trying again - mostly I am impatient.  The good news is that we have been getting her paycheck so we have really been blessed in so many ways through this whole ordeal.

Chief - that's a good trade, man - fishing for paint job!

Chatting with RT Thumbs Up  Back later - ttfn!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 80s.  Back in the Hoosier Land.  Had a nice trip back.  Stopped at the LEGO store in Cincy and came out with nothing.  Slightly disappointed.  Taking it easy tonight and then getting honey do stuff done tomorrow.  I had hotcakes and sausage on the dining car for the last time for a while as local McDonald's is closed for a rebuild.  TBIL anytime and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Evening

77 and cloudy.

I watched the weather radar all afternoon as rain approached it got here and split north and south. Bet the snow won't do that.

Suppose to be meteor showers for the next few nights but we have clouds. Of course. If you have clear skies look N.E....Banilla is waiting and the beacon is humming, I'm ready.

Sunny and high 90's today - typical August weather here.

Back to work today - the SS fund suffered enough last week.  The new plant manager seems to be settling in and starting to make some changes.  Gonna be an interesting few weeks.

Brutus - you might try an ACE hardware store for the Dremel brushes.  Sometimes they carry a small selection of accessories.

Missed a couple of 200 series Alco beaters on e-bay this weekend.  There will be others.

All for now.

Evenin' All.

Is it me or does the site seem to be moving a tad faster?

Been a very busy time past few days. Spent today helping daughter get ting her classroom ready for school on monday. Wifey helped with the paper preps and detailing, I was used for grunt labor. This year I double checked w/daughter before doing anything, last year I apparently ruffled some union feathers with some of the things I did. Just trying to clean up cabling for an efficient and cleaner work space.

Will be filling in at the museum again tomorrow, all packed and ready to go. Will definitely be glad when vacation times are over and done.

Later all.

Good evening all,

I received a Lionel 445 Animated Switch Tower reissue (12917) today I won on eBay.  It works great and I am very pleased with the price I paid.  I do have one question I'm hoping someone here can answer: Does it matter if I have it hooked up to my constant AC posts?  The instructions state it runs best on a certain VAC range, but since I am using the on/off switches that came with it, I believe it is okay to use the constant posts.  It worked fine both ways, but I want to make sure I am not messing it up.

See you all tomorrow,

Joe

Sorry Roy, no chili tomorrow. Everyone must fend for themselves. Whistling

Joe, When I am working with the styro/expanded foams, strictly a rattle can painter, I give them several light coats of a water based aerosol primer than they will accept the oil based aerosol paints.

Weather has been GREAT out here, other than a short hot spell we have been seeing mid to low 80's as the high and getting into the 50's at nite. Approve

A fairly good day today. Went to look into some of the last things on the Jeep. My friend James who is staying w/ me for a bit did the heavy stuff. Found I messed up on the automatic adjusters for the rear drums a couple weeks back and started doing some machining on the fly. I realized I'm not sure I ever messed w/ one of those. Who needs automatic stuff anyway (but, yes I fixed it)? Well the drums had another turn in 'em so it wasn't a huge mistake. Drives like a dream now. May have to wait a bit before I sell it as the surgeon doesn't want me riding the bike 'til the end of the month.

The surgeon was happy w/ my progress, but cautioned me to take it easy still. She cleared me for light duty at work (I go on the hill tomorrow) and when I told her what I was going to be supervising this week (the scaffolding), she added to the release "no climbing".Smile,Wink, & Grin I told her I'd have them tie me to a chair in the chamber. Two computer types and one electrical engineer setting up 50 ft. of scaffolding right next to the critical surface of the dish. They need supervision.

Brutus - I second 8N's suggestion of Ace for the dremel brushes. I seem to remember at set when I was working there. Try to find a bigger Ace. The  bigger the store, the more Dremel stuff.

Forgot who was thinking of me and Rich when looking on old iron. It is a labor of love. I connect w/ the car with every job I do. Each car has a spirit, some good and some not so good. Probably a reflection of the folks who put it together, after it's really all about people. What we often remember about our cars is the little problems they had. We call this "character". And I know this is really just a me thing, but I can't stand new cars.  I'm getting to the point where if the engine isn't air cooled and in the back, I don't want anything to do w/ it. Leaning over a fender just doesn't feel right to me, but I digress.

Hope everyone has a good week

Bob

 Hello all,

Stopped in for a quick cup before I get started.

Busy weekend. Supplemented tomatoes from garden with some from Produce Auction.  Ended up with 50 Quarts of juice and 32 Quart of whole tomatoes. As we were working on the juice Son arrived and said "Corn is ready". The ears are small but we husked 5 feed bags last night after dark. It'll be in the freezer before noon today. Lots of work but it'll taste good this winter.

Not much on the train front.

Church Festival and Hill Climb this weekend.

Prayers for all who may need them

Aloha all. Muggy and grey in Chicago. Delightful. I love summer except for the skeeters large enough this season to carry off a Volkswagen. Big Smile. Church meeting canceled last eve, so I got to catch up on 'my' TV - more Top Gear and Toy Stories - in last night's episode, they built a full-size bridge out of Meccano (Erector) sets.  Fife, our Menards has lots of 1:43 cars. I'll look later this week. Last class of the summer tonight. I'll look for 'riders' to join me on the train ride home in the station at 830p CST. Wink

Good Morning All

Sun and 90 today

Constant voltage is A-OK as long as its not too high. VAC will give you a working voltage without the possible chance of a burned out coil. Coils can burn out anyway if left on too long. No plans for the day, got to find something to burn for breakfast. Have a good day.
