Morning all, awoke to a sad phone call today.  My wife's brother passed away this morning after a short stay in the hospital.  He had a fall about a week ago which caused a head injury.  He was subseqently operated on to remove blood clot from the brain.  The surgery was successful but he had a heart attack last night that caused his demise.  They live in Chattanooga, Tenn.  My wife and I have too many health problems to brave the bad weather in the East to try and go back for the funeral.  I really want to go but it's just not practical or healthy.  I hope his family understands.  We will say prayers and offer masses for him.  That's about all we can do for now.

BF, almost bought one of those Remington semi-automatic rifles.  Was "handling" it at the gun store and the piece that allows you to pull the bolt back came out of the bolt.  Asked salesperson why?  He said so you could remove the bolt for cleaning [out the back like you do a bolt action rifle].  I then asked why it was so easy as if you are out in the "field" [woods mainly], it would fall out and you could loose it.  He could not answer.  Very poor design.  I have always been partial to Remington arms.  Due to this, I bought my first bolt action rifle.  Since then, I have fallen in love with bolt action rifles.  I use to be an avid hunter.  Not much anymore.  Mostly varmits [groundhogs, foxes and beavers.  Probably coyotes as they are moving in the area.  Animals that cause damage and threaten other wildlife.]

Right, I'll pass that story along to my lawyer/hunter friend. I'll bet he'll be amused by the  image of someone crawling around in the brush groping for rifle parts. Not a pretty sight. I'll make it clear that it was all made up, but I'll bet he laughs anyway. He's pretty sharp, and not at all easy to fool. Take care, I fully understand that one cannot take such threats lightly.

Morning all.  Don't know what the temp is....it is warm in here, but the heat has been running for quite some time.  Played Lego Indiana Jones-2 on the Wii with son as he needed a second person to work a particular scene.  Then I was asked by my bride to make "Bunny Rabbits", which are Pillsbury turnovers, today its cherry.  We called them Bunny Rabbits since my son, when first learning to speak thought the Pillsbury Dough Boy looked like a bunny.

Bob, great shots.  Looks like a lot of fun.
Rock, the image that Fife put into my head about you clearing the drive in your skivvies is a bit much.  Glad you were able to be the hero for a moment though.  As for your new found perspective of life, Congratulations!  Time has come for us all to take a new look at our priorities.

Chief, thanks for posting the warning.  I don't have one, but since we were talking about it, it is good to get such info out.

Well, have to start getting ready for my meeting this morning.  After the meeting, we are going to the movies with our little ones.  Should be fun.

Spoke with Dad last night.  He is having a tough time of things.  I guess the holidays have only made things a little more rough as one instance, New Years Eve he brought the year in alone.  I hope to eventually get him down here, but that has to be his decision.
Hope everyone has a blessed weekend.

Chief Eagles,

Thanks for again calling attention to the Remington Firearms Safety notice. As I recall it originally came out in August, 2009, but it's always good to see it repeated because some folks may have missed it.  I'm a little surprised that you were thinking of it in the middle of the night, of January 8-9, 2010 though. You public servants must never sleep.Smile I'm not much of a hunter myself, but my lawyer is and I'll see that he gets a copy. I'm sure he'll pay close attention to it. He always advises me to make copies of important stuff and keep them in my safe-deposit box, in the event that something unforseen happens. I'll bet yours does too. As you say, Safety First.

Good Evnin', Ya'll,

Wife and I hunkered down last Saturday because of the snowstorm that began very early before daylight and was forecast to continue into mid Sunday afternoon.  Winds picked up with gusts to 40 and a forecast of another 12 inches.

So rather than get premature with the snow removal (procrastination is my middle name), we pulled out a bunch of pictures and frames and decided to spend the day catching up on things.  By catching I mean with my wife's never-ending quest to cover every square inch of table and wall space in the house with a framed photo.

Never even got out of our pajamas.  Brought in some firewood.  I store it in the garage.  The risk of bugs and a hiding place for chipmunks and mice is there.  But it gets and then stays dry and at the ready, and no going out in the elements when a fire strikes us as a good idea.  Thanks Jon for the fireplace insert idea.  I wrote the brand down and need to go shopping for one.  Started a fire and planned a nice quiet dinner.  Then the phone rang with the news that the daughter and son-in-law were on their way over with the grandkids.

Yes, they usually come over Saturday afternoons/evenings, but we figured with the inclement weather and bad roads they would cancel.  Nope.  The snow had drifted pretty good, and the driveway was buried with the end impassable since the snowplow crews walled me in.  No parking is allowed on our road during the storms.  I had just 15 minutes to clean things up so they could pull into the driveway.

You never saw someone remove snow more quickly than I did.  5 (or is it 6?) forward speeds on the Ariens, and I was in 4th gear much of the time except for the heavy stuff left by the plows.  Finished up just as the family was arriving.

Enter the house to the amazement and kudos of wifey who first compliments me on fast and effective action.  Then asks how I was able to clear the entire drive in just 15 minutes when I'm usually out there an hour doing the exact same driveway.  Fast thinking on my part saved the day.  "It's a light, dry snow dear so things went quickly."  Close call.  Wink

Ran trains with the granddaughter. She kept knocking the cars off the track while loading and unloading her small toys in a couple of the gondolas.  Frowns and frustration painted her face, so I decided it was time for a self-sufficiency lesson.

Pulled out one of my old red rerailers but found that with guidance and a little patience on her part that she needed little help putting the cars back on the track.  I also noticed that when she has to put the cars back on the track herself, her propensity to knock them off the track declines rapidly.  She also learns the value of a more delicate touch.  Good for the old trains.  What I enjoy most about playing with her is stoking her imagination, letting her imagination run, then feeding into it.

Many of you have been talking about a need for some lifestyle changes.  That would be me.  I need to slow down and smell the roses, even if it means scheduling relaxation and then sticking to it.  Recent months I even got away from the Pot!

Another change I have begun is to remove my inclination to jump up and answer the phone as soon as/every time it rings.  While we eat dinner, just the two of us or with the family, the phone always seems to interrupt the one time of the day we have to relax, talk, and listen to each other.  Saturday I turned the phone off when we sat down to eat.  My wife started with the "What if...." scenarios.  The world can wait.  I need to start moving my family and my needs back up the priority chain.

My wife checked the caller ID on four incomings while I was playing with my granddaughter and the trains.  I took none of them.  What did I miss?  Nothing.  Even my granddaughter noticed this new phone etiquette Saturday night and asked me why.  "Because you are more important to me and I would rather spend the time with you and grammy than sitting on the phone.  We will always check to see who it is and can call them back later."  Funny how kids pick up phrases and euphemisms.  "Works for me." she responded.  Had to laugh.

We decided to pop some Lou Malnati's deep dish pizzas in the oven and stoke the fire.  Two of my Chicago buddies have the pizzas shipped to me from Chicago.  But when I went to the garage to examine and select from my private stock out of the freezer, I discovered that some were missing.  Apparently my son helped himself on his way out when he left our place New Years Eve.  Wifey defended him, saying I must be mistaken about my inventory.  "Well honey, then someone must have broken into the garage and stolen them, or the mice have been raiding the freezer.  Luckily they left the beer."  Family got a good laugh, but Pam found little humor in my sarcasm.

Women's logic about many things is total illogic and should never be challenged.  Sometimes it can be like dealing with a brick wall, except the brick wall listens a little better and remembers none of my faults.  Big Smile

Ran trains with the granddaughter after dinner after rekindling the fire.  The Rock Island 2031s can really haul once they get moving with a heavier load.  Motorized unit was handling the dummy with 8 freight cars and a caboose, plus some of the granddaughter's dollhouse dolls placed in the gondolas for a ride.  The old white milk car is relatively heavy as is the auto hauler, both mid 1950s.

The early 1950s Lionel single engined FA1 Alcos are not prodigious haulers.  The motors are up to the task but the engine's weight is a little on the light side to provide traction.  My unit's magnetraction is surpisingly strong after over 5 decades of operation. Clean track and wheels really helps as does a moderate hand on the throttle until things get moving.  Chief did recommend strategically adding some weight some time back to the motorized unit to kick up the traction, but I like feathering in the throttle.   As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have been using 027 tubular for 55 years and have been reticent to change.  The 036 Fastrack with the more gradual curves gives me so much more lattitude on operating speeds.  Worth the price in my book.  The realism relative to the tubular and the smoother curve operation have been a real plus for my enjoyment.  No pileups.  Old news for you guys, but I'm having a blast.  Still crazy after all these years.

Got to hit the hay.  Prayers first for those that need them..

Back at the 'scope for another couple nights. Hopefully no more compressor bingo for a bit.

The guy I got the russkie watch from does have some parts watches. Looks like I'll have one to use while the other is in the shop for cleaning.

On another happy note I used the giftcard my mom gave me for a Portland Birney Trolley from Gryzboski's. I've been looking at the post war trolleys, but I like the two poles and color scheme of this one.  And yes, for the CTT folks, I saw it in an add in their magazine!

Here's some photos of the Christmas trip to Colorado

The stop in Albequerque. They had the usual collection of various age baggage cars.

Heading north up to Raton, NM.

Have a good weekend!

Another cloudy single digit day here.  Snow flurries most of the day - the big fluffy kind of flakes.

Stopped by Radio Shack and got some bits & pieces for a train related LED project today.  Hopefully, I'll be able to keep the magic smoke inside the components and get something that works.  I'll report with pictures at a later date, if I am sucessful.

Local hobby store closed early today, probably 'cause of the cold.  I'll have to stop by tomorrow and pick on him just a bit.

Watched Final Countdown on DVD tonight.  That movie has one of my all time favorite scenes - a dogfight between Tomcats and Zeros.  Talk about a one sided affair.

All for now.

P.S. - just noticed my posting counter is up to 399.  The next one will be 400.  Wooooow.

Brent.....your niece is one smart cookie.  When my wife looks at me that way I don't just move.  I run.  Smile

I will post a couple pictures tonight that will highlight this fact very clearly).

This is from our trip to DC with family back in November. We were at the National Air and Space Museum and Susan had been walking with her niece the entire time. They decided to sit down for a few and rest when all of a sudden this happened:

Yes the seat banks were next to each other, and no one knows what prompted this. Susan's niece HAD been sitting right next to her, then promptly moved to the far end of the other seat bank...

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

Don, have you planted your "summer" garden yet? Whistling

Pat

Yeah Right !!!???  Our total lot size is 50 foot x 100 foot.  Set a 2100 sq ft house, then a 30k gal pool on it, and where does the garden go??  No space at all !!!  Some folk find some strips of land under the Edison distribution centers and plant small gardens there.  When I say small, I mean small!!!  2 - 5 foot rows of corn, maybe some radishes, a few tomato plants, and then try to guard them from being stolen.

Just another benefit of living here.

BTW watching the train videos, I havn't seen any location that I would dislike living at.  Maybe someday!!!

Got tomorrow off !!!  Got so much planned to do, if i do 10% of it I will be successful.  Having an enjoyable evening tonight, Chris gone to Vegas, Wife gone to Bunco, I have the evening to myself.  Watching DVD's, a glass of wine, and a bucket of cheese corn.

Suppose to get a little colder this weekend, down to 72, then a slight forecast of rain on Wednesday.  probably will end up with a cloud or two.

Hope everyone has a great weekend !!  Oh yeah good luck catching all them beavers you guys.

Oh, heard today Florida is having a problem with Iguana's, temperatures getting below freezing and the things are falling out of the trees.

Buckeye Riveter

Iowa Johnny.......Please tell us how you stopped that AMTRAK Train?  Confused

fifedog.......For you own safety, please stock up on the necessary staples of food for the family for about a 10 day siege.  The big one is still lurking between us and Iowa.

Looking forward to a visit from the Deacon tomorrow.  Wes, too!!!  Of course, I cancelled by tee time at Snowy Meadows Golf Club to accomodate the visit, but it is worth it.

Smoke unit blew out on Docksider.  Sad

Buckeye--it's a "suthern Iowa secret" that can only be revealed if you have the secret ring issued by Sky King---do you have such a ring?
