Chip,

The 302 that I am dealing with has brush tubes, and these use a shouldered brush and coil spring. Gilbert used this arrangement starting in 1948. The slotted brushes I removed were designed for the earlier "tubeless" brush holder that Gilbert used until the end of 1947. The slotted brushes use a flat spring, which is very similar to what Lionel used. The most abrasive thing that I ever used to clean a commutator was an ink eraser. Now, I use a combination of CRC QD Contact Clean and Never Dull on commutators. It cleans and polishes the copper to a mirror like finish, and easily removes stubborn carbon deposits.

Sunny and cool here today.

My wife feels a little better today, as the steroid injection is starting to work.  For my fun at the doctor, they irigated my ears and started flushing rocks out of my head!  Think there are still more in there, as the water never did come out of my other ear.

Cooked up a batch of five bean chili for tomorrow's chili day at work.  Threw in a couple of the habinaro peppers from the garden that I roasted earlier this year and froze.  This is going to be a heavy duty batch.

Up tight today.  My mood was reflected in my blood pressure when it was checked at the doctor's office.

Think I'll go upstairs for a little train tharapy time.

Later all.

Back from School Board thingy.  Only three of us 12 Mayors invited to the swearing in.  Then sat through the insluting teachers that are members of the NCEA [NC Education Assoc.].  As far as I'm concerned, drop off the "oc".  That has been the problem with Wake County Schools.  NCEA and Staff have been running the School Board.  "New Sheriff in town."  New members are now a majority.  Kicked out present Chariman and installed their Chair.  Had 7 resolutions.  NCEA teachers and a few parents got up and blessed out new Board members.  The first one was the President of the Wake Co. NCEA.  If she is so upset, maybe she should teach in another county. Whistling  News media asked me about all those folks being surprised at the new members actions.  I said they surely read the newspaper and listened to your news casts.  If surprised, why did they turn out in such numbers with already  prepared speaches.  POOR LOSERS!!!  BTW: one of the resolutions was to stop all work and spending on the H6 school site [the one I have opposed all along].  Means I will probably get my Rolesville High School.

Later. [got to see 11 PM news] Smile,Wink, & Grin

Good mornning all,

It is cloudy and mild (for now) in SE Indiana, but rain (and Snohio) are on the way.  Way too busy last night.  Did soccer drills (9 touches), weights and treadmill (12:20 mile), came home, ate supper, rested a bit, went up in attic and worked up there almost hour and a half.  Have now got all my brick and Erector set "stuff" in two designated areas.  Ran the 384E for a while during the time spent working.  Caboose does not like to back up thru switches except at a crawl.  Found some more items to throw out, but also found a set of state road maps my parents had collected for me back in the early 60s.  Pre-internet days, they had to find out and write each state highway department asking for them.  I am not sure if there is any collectible or historical value to them, but they do give a picture of what highways were like in the early stages of the interstate system.  Also found Lucas' old Fisher Price Flip Track (now Geo Track) set.  Perhaps the grandkids will get some enjoyment from that.  Was tired after all that.  Sore this morning.  Traffic was heavy on the way into work.  I had a little extra on the dining car for breakfast before sending it to "Points East".  TBIL after "Glee".  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Morning – Wednesday Hump Day

75F today, right now is damp and mostly cloudy – the calm before the storm.  Rain, wind, tornadoes, you know, wrath of God stuff later this afternoon.

Finished the tree decorations, laid down the Atlas double track main lines under the tree.  That was until 10, then had to make executive decisions on virtual schooling which lasted until 11.  Man, I’m beat.  Need to add 1 more item to the tree, lay out the trolley loop, the power drops and then the Princess can do the Christmas Villages.  I have to get my MTH tunnel out and see if it fits the layout as well.  Might be runnin’ trains under the tree tonight (‘specially since it’s gonna be soooo nasty outside).

Made spaghetti, meatballs & Premio Italian sausage for dinner last night.  Made 1 pound o’pasta and no leftovers.  YUM!!

Mike C – I’d check ebay on those maps, some are waaay collectable.

Angel – for all, Advent started last Sunday (of course, I missed church...Banged Head).

Chief – nice way to kick butt!!

OK all, check ya later!

Aloha all. Sunny and cold today. Have a bunch of errands and going to visit with my friend who was laid off and sad. Good news about your bride, 8n! All this talk about brushes makes me want to take apart the #41 and see why it sounds like a coffee grinder. Scared I'll break it though. Talked a long time on the ride home with a bedridden vet and toy train fan met on another forum who lives relatively nearby. Might try to go visit tomorrow. Bride is off to her 'silent retreat' - one more joke from me about it and I think I'll get hit by a frying pan. Nice check-in with Brutus too last night. Was working at church til late. Toy train runnin' tonight!!

Morning.  Guess what?  Yes, raining.  Cold too but suppose to warm up later this afternoon and tonight with possible T'boomers.  Got political reception in Raleigh.  Both sides will be there so will be interesting.  BTW: they did stop the H6 High School site. This article did not know that at time of publication.

Seems teachers walked out of Board meeting last night in discuss.  Didn't get their way.  Wake Co school get out an hour earlier on Wednesdays for teacher planning meetings.  Parents call it Whacky Wednesday.  Parents do NOT like it.  It was stopped by end of school year.

Now if only we could get our wives to take more silent retreats at home.

I remember many years ago I gave one of the readings at my sister-in-law’s wedding that said:

A silent wife is a gift from the Lord.

Fortunately, she still let me come to the reception afterward.

Doug,

Most of Lionel's small motorized units sound like coffee grinders even if they have properly maintained. I'd take it apart though to give it a good cleaning and lube.

Not much else going on today. I am waiting for the mail because the 342AC should get here any day now. I will open it to look it over because I am not sure if I want to keep it or send it back.

Good Morning,

Almost 80 already this morning @10:40 or so, above average temps for this time of year in south Florida.

Hey Chief our local schools down here are in a stew over the new school board administrator(Palm Beach County Public Schools) who is putting new testing into the weekly or monthly planner for the  teachers. Students are supposed to be testsed every three weeks or so for progress, teachers & parents are complaining that the teachers can't teach the children properly because of haviong to worry about coming up with new testing paper work for the students.

About shooting up in Jupiter FL(about 33 miles north of me) on Thanksgiving day; four dead and another shot & injured, shooter still at large with U.S. Marshalls looking for him. Most of the local news down here is very tradgic to say the least or almost horrifying to hear about.

Trying to sell RV in RV Trader paper, so far the only really interested people are from RV dealerships to do a consignment. May have to get finance company to agree to a short sale. It will cost us $1.50 a mile to transport RV to dealership. Can't afford to keep RV another year as we don't know what can go wrong next, only guess is that the air conditioning will act up. This past year we put a new water heater in the RV and a water pump, both were leaking, fixed the water pump which was the obvious leak but still kept getting carpet wet inside the storage area underneath, so then I had the water heater replaced and that cured it.

Cut back on hours at work, I may work only 16 hours this week, seems like too many part-timers.

Good Morning from wet Southern Ohio,

I took the morning off to serve Mass at the grade school.  The grandskids did not know I was going to be ther so it was a nice surprise for them.

Rich - Your tanker is in the mail.

Jim - Right on with the troubleshooting.  Once the surfaces mate up the sparking will subside.  I'd love to see pictures of the 342 when you get it.

Got to go

May God bless

Jim,

I think that I might wait until Christmas morning to take pics of it so that I can try out the camera.  I was debating wether or not to keep it, but I'd probably never find another like this one.   I'll send you a PM about where you can find some pics of it from the listing.

Chief

I read your news article and have a question.

Did anyone ask Joe Desormeaux, Wake's assistant superintendent for facilities, how a second High School on Forestville Road (the third within 3 miles) would reduce traffic congestion?Confused Wandering if he is a silent partner in the land deal.Mischief

Good morning all, cool cloudy day here with high around 66.  That's winter for Southern California.  Went for my usual walk though.  Foot Dr. appointment today and need to pick up more extension cords from hardware store.  Everybody wants a 15 footer for some reason.  They were sold out but more due today. A guy called me up wanting to borrow a small transformer to use on a layout for the public at Christmas but the only one I had is a collectors item.  It's a Lionel 1044 mint in original box with paper work.  I don't want to let that one go and come back with a broken handle on it.  I do wish I could have accomodated the guy but I just don't have an appropriate one to loan.  I did have a spare KW but already gave that one to a friend.

Chief, I have not been following the school board fight or whatever you call it but I gather that you are making progress or at least your recommendations are being realized.

Have a good one.

Excuse me, I "erred" in my times.  Its not ONE hour but THREE hours early on Wednesday.  Now I know LAZ trained them.   Had at time getting out of School Street [from the pond].  Mom's had blocked both lanes of School Street.  One of the residents was trying to get out as the US Mail courier was try to get in.  I was trying to get out too.  The two Mom's would not move. Banged Head Called PD but the line moved before they got there.  Those two Mom's had the be Yankees that moved down here.  No manners. Whistling

Got to find that beaver.  Had rebuilt dam in spillway over night.  Fred [my hunter guy] cleaned it out yesterday afternoon.  I spent 30 minutes with pitchforks throwing out leaves, big sticks and mud.  Was pouring rain.  Had on my Gortex Army jacket but did not wear the pants.  Got home and my legs were soaked.

Pouring now.  Got to go to political reception in the rain.  Later.

Howdy Guys.  Been real busy with cases and family.  Only been getting about 2.5 to 4 hours of sleep each night.  Got my NYC consolidation delivered the other day.  Wife will wrap it and put it under the tree.  I snuck out between cases and bought her a diamond pendant necklace.  I think that will warm things in the train department.  Regardless, she's worth it.

Picked up several train related magazines while at the mall.  Jon, in the "Special Holiday Issue of Trains", they have a advertisement for "Iowa's Railroads".  It is written by H. Roger Grant and Don L. Hofsommer.  It is available through Indiana University Press 1-800-842-6796.  This and other magazines have been very good therapy in between cases.

Chief, glad you are keeping those folks in check.  We actually have a very well run school system and the board seems to handle things well.  Our kids are in private school, so we don't have much dealings with them.  The schools are consistently in the top rankings.

Well, fatherhood calls.  Hope everyone has a blessed night.

I'll try to look later...still don't get it....been a loooong day at work --- it MUST be a full moon or something...what a day...Banged Head

It was last night when the clouds broke for few.  Rain slowed up for us to get into building for reception.  Then it poured.  Slowed up enough for us to get to 4 Runner.  Then poured hard all the way home.  We are under twister watch too.  Several counties west of us are under flash flood warnings.  Home it goes out between midnight and daylight as forecasted.  Got to drive to the mountains [west] tomorrow for a funeral and then back.  Had a great time at reception.  New School Board members came to me to be introduced around.  Some folks of the "old school" just smiled but most were very nice and told them they were doing good.  Cousin [daughter of cousin who is retired Chief State Court of Appeals Judge] will be sworn in as a new District Court Judge tomorrow.  Following her Dad's footsteps.  They were there tonight.

Hope beavers have not re-damed the spillway with this heavy rain.  Might cause the pond to go to emergency "run around".  Not fun when that happens.  I do have it fixed to prevent washing away the dam [along with the help of a big rock as big as my house].

Klondike bar time.  On sale at gro for 2 boxes for the price of one.  Got one dark chocolate and one original.  Then popcorn.  Yes, did not eat at reception.
