Jim,

Having been through needing to tear down a layout due to a situation, I know what that feels like. I was real mad about it at first, but it worked better in the end. I was able to build a new layout that was slightly smaller, but is more focused.  As a result, it is better that the layout I took down.

PS: If you have any 330 series Northerns or 660 series passenger cars, I will be more than happy to store them for you.Wink

Banks,

 Hello All

Normal 0

Bob  Blood pressure meds can screw you up. My endocrinologist put me on Lisinopril. Not because of high blood pressure but to "protect my kidneys and arteries" from the effects of Diabetes. I am type 2, controlled by Metformin, and diet.

Long story short, six months later I couldn't walk up a flight of steps without feeling winded.

Do you think it could be the lisinopril?

No, stress test was performed. Your heart is fine.

That's good but I still can't breath. Do you think it could be the lisinopril?

No, Cardiac Catherization was performed. Your heart is fine.

Do you think it could be the lisinopril?

Maybe, quit taking it for three months, monitor your blood pressure and we'll see what happens.

It took almost a year for me to get back to almost normal. I still get winded more than I think I should. I have started 30 minutes a day of cardio workout. It hasn't reduced my sugar level much (my last A1C was 5.2) but it has lowered my triglycerides and raised my HDL cholesterol.

Jim about K4 1361, as I recall it

Early 80's it was removed from the Horseshoe Curve to be restored to running condition. It was taken to Conrail's Juniata Shop. They offered much assistance

Mid 80's after much ballyhoo and money it was back under steam. Due to the USRA regulations it was not allowed on the mainline on it's own. There were a couple of test runs and local excursions on branch lines. I actually saw it running near Bellefonte Pa. while on a trip to Danville to visit relatives.

I don't remember the exact circumstances. While being towed back from a trip to the east one of the bearings on a driver axel overheated.

While disassembled to repair this other issues were discovered. Now without funds it languished for a few years in the Juniata shops.

Shortly after the take over by Norfolk Southern they said Get Your Piece of Junk Out Of Here. We Need The Space.

About this time a grant from the State of PA came. It was decided to take it to Steam Town.

There required X-rays discovered even more issues with the integrity of the boiler and tubes. All the money was spent. Much of it doing things two or three times. Because of shoddy work and misinformation. Again it sat a couple of years hoping for more State money. Last year it was returned to Altoona in lots more pieces than it left in. As I understand almost all of the boiler issues were repaired. At this point all that is needed is reassembly. And it will be better than new. The Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum is looking for funds to complete the restoration. They do have the money to complete the one stall roundhouse that was started a few years ago.

I hope after all this they do get it going again

Sorry I'm so long winded

Prayers for all who may need them

Good Afternoon from beautiful Southern Ohio

Just a quick check in during lunch.  Thanks for the replies on the storing of the train stuff.  I’m going to pick up some of the sealable plastic containers and acid free paper.  I would love to store them inside the house.  There is a deep out of the way closet that currently has stuff that could easily be stored where temps would not matter.  Great idea.  Hopefully the absence of the layout will only be short lived.

Don – Happy Anniversary!  Genesis 2:18 The Lord God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone, I will make a suitable partner for him”.  You obviously found your suitable partner!

Jim – The pieces are for closets and landfill!  Never seems to fail that with each project we discover a better way to do it the next time.

May God bless

Jim

Aloha and happy anniversary Don to you and your bride - just ten years behind you. Jon, no rush on the car - I've just been having some delivery mysteries and didn't want to presume anything. Brutus, sounds like you're almost done. The whirlwind visit by my daughter and her college friends is almost done, and thankfully, as I forgot how much they eat.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 60s.  I washed the truck and the PT Cruiser last night, went to the YMCA for soccer drills, and then helped wife move 'stuff' so the carpet people could do their thing today.  Tonight I will pick up sticks and hang the Halloween lights.  I had bran muffins on the dining car for breakfast before sending it to "Points East".  TBIL, and I can drive tonight  Buckeye, I think that is a wonderful idea for a 30th wedding anniversary celebration.  My 31st will here soon and I may suggest that to the "saucy wench".  After I pick myself up off the floor, I may suggest something else.  I hope everyone has a good day.

 Keep on training,

Tomorrow a special day, our 30th anniv., need to come up with some "special" activities.

What about renting a limosine and doing a wine and cheese tour of Southern Califonia's train stores.  I think Mrs. Baker would love a tour like this.Whistling

Back on the hill after my whirlwind medical Monday. Had a good follow up with my doc and she released me to go back to regular shift work. They had to stab me twice for blood as they couldn't get it flowing and then I started to get light headed. Thought I had got over that. They used to call me "the dropper" in the Navy. May have something to do with the rest of what's going on, dunno. Diabetic class was short, but I got a few questions answered and I gave them my old meter to be used as a training aid. Went to the used bookstore in between appointments and found some used train videos that were fairly cheap. Then went for the MRI of my foot. They got me set up and then said they had problems w/ the machine. I laughed and told them that I felt right at home. I heard a cryogenic cooler in the background and we were delaying observations due to equipment problems. Happens often enough at the scope. Interesting technology though and very similar to what we do in many ways. We'll see what they find in my foot.

jefelectric - You could very well be right. Funny how that stuff goes. I think its weird that the stuff I take all the time is the higher copay and the one-time prescriptions are are the lowest tier. My insurance just stopped coverage of Prilosec and it's generics. I guess I'll just buy it otc until I see my doc again. Some of the other prescriptions did get cheaper, so maybe it'll balance out.

dennis - my doc wants me to stay on the Ca channel blocker for a few weeks yet and it turns out they want me to take it twice a day. She is pulling me off the Lisinopril but putting me back on the Atenolol. And she was saying pretty much what you said that we have to adjust it for each individual.

Well, need to go find a pillow as we have to get up early to set up the scaffolding and haul up the subreflector.

 Evening All !

Laz, do you assign homework for detention?  Our school did, we had to do reports from the Encycopedias.  Detention was held in the Library.  (We didn't have many books, the library was in a room about 12x10 with one table.

Ray, Great picture !  Your will be on top of it real soon, just remember experiment and practice.  Mistakes don't cost anything.  One thing I enjoy doing is taking a photo using the highest quality setting.  Then I will save it to a file, magnify the image, then crop it, magnify it again, crop it, magnify AGAIN,  keep repeating that until it becomes extremely pixulated. then back off some.  If the photo is landscape or something in the distance or a car or something.  You can really do a lot, find stuff you wouldn't normally see, all kinds of things.  Also take advantage of some of the reference links that are provided, there is lots and lots of information tutorials available and they are free.  Just requires some time.

Good News here, resolved our parking problem!  Sold off one of the vehicles, now were down to 4, a manageable number.  The van had about 240,000 on it, body was in great shape and it looked good.  Now the engine whole 'nother story.  Turns out a neighbor bought it.  Probably not the best thing, wife is concerned about having to look at it all the time.

Tomorrow a special day, our 30th anniv., need to come up with some "special" activities.

Hope everyone has a great day !!

Later !!

SJ,

Do you know why the 1361 was mutilated? All that I read was that it was torn apart after Steamtown got it. I don't know why, but that really bothers me. The 1361 seems to be the iconic PRR steamer.  I have alwats liked it ever since I saw old footage of it during a segment on the Pennsylvania Railroaders Memorial Museum that was on a Tracks Ahead episode in the early 90s.

Evening all.  Back from all the meetings [one was steak and potato, free].

Jim and James, RFD-TV had the Trains and Locomotives and told about the Northern [last week while I was at the lake].  That was the one that called the C&O a good Southern Railroad.  I questioned the OHIO as Southern.  Buckeye did not comment so I guess that is right. Whistling

Pat, RT will always be a CARPETBAGGER. Laugh  [RT, got your message and thanks]

Got an early ribbon cutting.  Then going to Tractor Supply and pick up a gun safe they have on sale.  Never had one.  Figured I need to get one and get them out of the walk-through in the train room.  Also be moved downstairs so closer in case of a Yankee raid.  I do keep two pistols "close at hand" and another as carry conceal.

Crazy drivers tonight.  Left Garner NC [dropped of Garner Mayor] and car pulls out in front of me.  I brake.  He almost hits the bridge guardrail on right side of road.  Then drives on the left side of the road.  Suddenly turns right and goes down ramp.  I follow as he is going my way.  Call 911.  Rings and rings and rings.  Finally got a dispatcher.  Tell him what I have witnessed.  Tell him driver is holding it between lines in his lane but traveling at a high rate of speed.  Give him car discription and license number [yes I got close enough to read] and travel direction.   Offer to follow and update.  Dispatcher says no need and he will put it out to Raleigh cars.  I follow any way.  Driver changes streets [these are 8 lane streets] so I call 911 again.  Get lady.  Tell her story all over again and he is on South Saunders now and he hits concrete median and bounces off.  Tell he is is now turning on to I 40 west.  She says she will put it out.  Guess no one cares about a drunk driver until he hits someone.  In the past, dispatcher allowed me to follow and update while they stayed on the line.  Hope they got him.

Well, came into to Roseyville and both night PD cars had someone stopped at Ronnie White's Tire [in edge of Town].  Was talking on cell phone to Mr. Jon E.  Turn in driveway and stop.  Go to mailbox and here comes a car in the middle turn lane passing a line of cars.  Driver keeps on passing in middle of highway and runs through red light downtown.  All this time I am beeping PD1 and PD2 on Nextel.  Never got an answer [Barney and Co. probably let their batteries die and forgot to recharge].  I'm sure the driver said to himself, both night cars are in one place and he might have seen the Sgt's car a PD, so he passed everything in sight.  Can't wait for FULL MOON.

Now Fifey.  You are setting yourself up for a sinking.  Auto bilge pump is like accident insurance.  You have it and probably will never need it.  If you don't, you will surely need it.  One seal or anything below water starts leaking, you not there, she sinks.  My Ranger bassboat has two.  Now if it rains on a bassboat, it rains in a bassboat.  But any boat [except pontoon] left in water needs an automatic bilge pump.

Wed morning, ride the NS Life Saver train to Goldsboro NC.  Eat eastern NC bar-be-que and ride back.  Come home to let dogs out, drive to Raleigh to transportation meeting and leave immediately for CenturyLink reception [they bought out Embarq telephone and communications company].  That will be a long day.

No popcorn tonight.  Too full.  Good night all.

Good pic Ray!

Running late - son said he was still sick this AM so stayed home, but after a couple hours he was acting fine and no temp today, so he's going to school tomorrow.  This afternoon, I picked up 6 sheets of drywall.  Screwed one corner up pretty badly, but will use that for a top course and cut that part off anyway.  Just need to drywall the bathroom after doing about an hour of soldering and testing that, then insulating.  A little left to do on the stairs and overhead, too.  I'm at about 95 percent done on the walls now and it feels great - I built a bigger house in my basement than my first house, lol!  Learned a lot, would do a lot of things differently now - use wood instead of the steel for one thing, it's a lot faster.

TARDIS is ready so let's get going, you guys can draw straws to drive, lol!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good evening all, thought I would put a test shot on here of my layout with my new Cannon Power Shot A1100 IS. . Went to a funeral this morning for a friend of my wife.  Did not know her but went for wife support.  Beautiful music at the service with Ave Maria and Panis Angelicus being sung by a female soloist.  Spoke to the funeral director who told me one of those moturary jokes like "it's better to be seen than to be viewed".  My son is trying to educate me for using the new camera and navigating around the computer with it.

Good Afternoon all!
Work was a easy day.  Came home early to take wife and kids out for a nice lunch...steak, YUM!  Went to Michaels this afternoon and picked up some items for the layout.  They have LEDs for floral arrangements that use two AA batteries.  I plan on using this for the new building.  Also picked up some other odds and ends that I hope to put to use real soon.  Got some stain as I had to strip and refinish six tables for the den.  Wife's family is coming next week and she wants the tables resurfaced as the kids have done everything from writing on them to using a hammer.  First coats are drying.  Once done, I will use steel wool and then do a second coat.

Ole Timer, I got the D90 and it is fantastic.  The digital image while using the video  takes some getting used to, but it is much more camera than I will grow into.  I suggest getting a good video that goes over all the bells and whistles as there is so much to learn.  Even though it has all that, it also has the Auto selections that will have you shooting photos in no time.  One suggestion, San Disk has come out with the Extreem III memory cards.  These are a lot faster and with a 8Gb card, you will have plenty of storage.  Also, the speed of the cards increases the speed of the cycle time for the camera.  If San Disk is still having the special, I got money cards back from them.  Always have an extra memory card in the case for  when you need it.

Have a good night,
Dennis

Doug --

I did receive a box car about a week ago from Kauleeeforniaaaaahhhh (Kurt's very nice car) so maybe the artery clog has been unclogged, we'll see.  The clog is not in CA, it's somewhere before Don.  I'll get some pics taken this weekend and post 'em on Sunday, then I'll put the car in the mail next week.  Remember, patience is a virtue Big Smile

Chief - My Hunter is pretty water tight, but we had so much rain with those twin Nor'easters.  My main problem is getting the bilge pump low enough to suck out that last bit of water. I actually use a turkey baster to get it completely dry, which keeps the boat smelling nice. What was remarkable was seeing how much bilge water was being pumped out of the newer-bigger boats last week at the show.  I mean, I kept thinking, "they're brand new...why so much water inside...?"

Random comments on a bright, crisp, sunny Mon. afternoon.Thumbs Up

Ray - I love Bluegrass Music. Plan to try and see the "Rambling Ralph Show" next Sat.

Brutus - Your daily activity  is sounding a lot like the Chief's day.Bow

Chief - You keep mentioning popcorn. Haven't had any for 4 years (diet you know). Had some last night, smothered in butter. You have me hooked again!

Dennis- Here in the country we unplug things at the least hint of a thunderstorm. Most vulnerable is the land line modem we use as a backup to the satellite internet access.

Don - No problem parking here on the farm. Lots of room. Park on the drive, in the barn yard, on the grass. However, one time I parked on the grass at the post office, and a state trooper ran in and asked the postmaster if he should do something about me.Confused (What do you think fifey?)

Any way you can store these in a more climate-controlled area of the house?

Jim,

I am glad that Doug brought that up, because I totally forgot about mentioning that in my post. I'd look for other places to store them before putting them in a garge. The heat in the summer combined with the cold winters destroys trains.  I've seen more trains damaged like this than by rough play.
