it took me a week of pick and shovel work but got r done.

Laz.......Please sit down.  I have some terrible news for you.  We now have a new gadget called a backhoe that can do all this work for you very quickly and easily.  Another new gadget is a dump truck.  It isn't as complicated as the backhoe, but has more wheels than the wheel barrow.   Whistling

If you had availed yourself of these new gadgets, you could have been out there running those extra miles for fifedog and me. Laugh

SPMAN, RAY,

We have 2 ponds, first one is about 1200+ gal.  We did this one 9 years ago on the account of a tree falling down after a storm.  Wife wanted it so I dug it.  Second one she wanted for a BDAY gift and it took me a week of pick and shovel work but got r done.  That one is 4000+ gal.  I took out 148 wheel barrows of dirt and gave it to the township.  My biggest problem is having too many fish.  I sarted with 7 and have in excess of abot 500.  I also gave away at least another 500+ to who ever wants them.  Now I'm thinking about stocking some bass to see if they'll eat some of these goldfish.  All and all very relaxing sitting out there after my morning runs in the summertime.  Just love it.

Good evening everyone.  Had a nice conversation with a southern gentleman today.  Seems he had quite the ride with the black pony fleet.  I had a good day at work, small cases, followed by some administration work.  Finished shortly after 11am.  Quick stop by Chick-Fil-A and brought lunch to my bride and daughter who were at a pumpkin farm.  Picked up some mayhaw jelly, peach cider and some boiled peanuts....YUM.  After violin lessons tonight, came home for some good food and watching Mythbusters on DVR.

Ray, one thing you may want to do is to get a "How To" book and "Cheat Sheet" along with a video on your specific camera.  I did it for the D90 and it really helps.  Also, always take the instruction manual with you.  Some little things that can ruin a shot, or even an outing, easily handled when you have the manual.  Still, your camera is a good model.  I got my information (Books, DVDs) from Amazon and B&H Photo in NY.  They have a big web site and good pricing.

Good Evening

Nice day 70, but this is it, down from here.

I am expecting a visit from Mich. Charlie tonite so I thought I would check in early.  Went out shopping twice today but one trip was better that the other. Granny promised apple sauce and pies if I would take her to the produce stand. I took her. Banilla is waiting so bring on the thingy, we can always back her up or fast forward....S.J.

Getting closer and closer to operations. Starting to get excited. Just looked into the wheel puller and cups again for the 1664 in preparation for train time:)

cnwdoug - the website could use more updating for sure, but it's one of the last things we get to. I'll pass the word on the the bosses for more updates though. A number of folks on the tours are curious as well.

dougagrump - I like the "centipede in a sack race" phrase. Think I'll use that.

Chief - Are you taking the train to New England? Down East is a term used for being in Maine.

Well we are trying to move the telescope w/ the computer system and got engineers invading later. Gotta go.

Mornin All !

Been busier than a centipede in a sack-race, between the "Honey-do's" and starting the halloween layout it's difficult to tell which end is up. Dead

Jon, Looking forward to meeting yuz guys next month. Thumbs Up As time gets closer we can work out the details.

Got a question about a ground cover for the halloween layout. This thing has survived so many in-carnations that the surface looks really tacky with patches, etc. Any ideas for a ground cover? Was thinking of using a bird litter made from corn cobs which could be composted afterward but appears to be a bit pricey for just a couple of days use.

Well back to the garage, paint should be dry by now.

Lionel, where's my halloween gateman !!!!!!! Grumpy

Speaking of visits Jon, anymore information on your trip to Insane diego?

Don--

It looks like we are flying out of here on Nov. 17 in the afternoon arriving in the early evening.  The boss will be busy Wed. & Thurs. so I want to do some fun things, we are staying a few extra days and I'm not sure what we will do or where we might end up.  Our return flight in out of SD so we won't wander to far north.  We'll stay in touch as the date gets closer.  In fact, I'll PM you my cell #.

Good morning all,

Don, happy anniversary.  Good for you and the misses.  We will celebrate our 50th next month.

Pat, wow!  That was brutal with the outhouse story.

Kind of getting back to normal today.  Had a pain in the tummy for a few days.  Think I ate the wrong kind of popcorn.  Can't process those hulls like I used to.  Ah, the golden years!  Have to talk to Chief about how to eat popcorn.  He probably has a cast iron stomach.  I know what he will say, eat more grits!

Took a break from fooling with the new camera yesterday.  Getting too stressed out over all that stuff.  I have to take baby steps with the learning process.  Anyway, I know it works now and all the other things to know about it will come in time,  I am a 20th century man living in the 21st century.  I was born before TV, cell phones, IPODs, Blackberries, personal computers, Jet air travel, and men on the moon among other things.  The modern technology is a little too much for me sometimes.

Laz, I must have missed your original post about the fish pond.  How big is this thing?  We don't have any freezing problems here but we have trouble with critters.  Racoons raided all the time and wrecked the pond I had.  Just put in cheap goldfish for that reason which were expendable.  Finally drained the whole thing because of the wrecked plants and all done by the racoons.  Now the racoons hang around my swimming pool at night looking for insects that fall in the pool and end up around the edges.  I tried trapping them but city won't pick them up anymore and more often than not, I would catch skunks in the trap instead of the racoons.  Not good!  If we lived in the country I suppose a good dose of hot lead would thin out the critters but then I would probably be in trouble with some animal rights folks.

Have a good day y'all,

Ray

Jim S - Great pictures on last SPF!

This one reminds me of a conversation I overheard between Chief and Buckeye:

Buckeye was sitting in the outhouse with his hand down the hole beside him.

Chief - "Buckeye, what are you doing?"

Buckeye - "I dropped my jacket down here."

Chief -  "You aren't going to wear it are you?"

Buckeye - "No, but I had a biscuit in the pocket!"

Don, A belated Happy 30th Anniversary.

Laz, I leave my filter and waterfall run all winter, so far no problems.  I do insulate the semi-buried filter on top.  My main concern is a prolonged power outage in subfreezing weather, but so far that has not happened in the 10 years we have the pond.  Like you we could stand to loose a few fish.

My cold seems to be improving a little, but it is slow go.  Don't think I will go to the HS football game on Friday night.  Chance of rain is in the forcast.

Not much visible progress on the local train station renovations yet.  Just some fencing and job trailers on site.

Has anyone tried the Frying Bacon and Coffee scented smoke fluid yet?  I just picked some up but haven't tried it yet.

  DOUG CNW1995,

I take the pumps and filters out every year to give those things a much needed break.  I guess I could leave um in but why waste lectricity.  Also you can't enjoy the ponds when there is a foot o sno hi o onthe ground. So far we haven't lost any fish with them out, and if we do I need a few that could go anyway.

Hey guys, Thanks for all the well wishes!  Really appreciate it!  We had a great dinner, at a local restaurant, I didn't realize was even there.

Not much interesting stuff to comment on, going to spend the day running errands.  Need to make a large loop around LA, from one side to another picking up product.  (3 different stops).  Time permitting may give Ray a call and drop in just to say, hey.  See how it goes.

Have wifes aunt and uncle coming out from Milwaukee for a short visit next week.  So will need to make sure the train room is in order.  Speaking of visits Jon, anymore information on your trip to Insane diego?

Best wishes and prayers for those that need them, especially Brutus' family.

Later,

Don

Aloha all. A beautiful morning in Chicago. VIsited a friend who's working on a big rehab of a building around the corner from me. All this BP talk is scary. My doc just told me cut out the salt. Well, I never use a salt shaker and don't eat pretzels so what's that mean, really? Banks, thanks for the summary of 1361. Laz, hoisting one for your dad this evening when I get home. Why do you have to close the ponds? It sounds like you remove some circulating equipment for winter, right? Bob, missed the meteors on my train ride home with Sir J, Brutus and Charlie. It was too cloudy. Hope the scope got some good observations - wish they'd update their website more frequently on what they are up to...

Brutus, Charlie and I had a nice ride home with  Doug M. last nite. No world problems solved though. Sorry.  Clouds rolled in just before sunset last nite so no stars. I have heard that WP in Dayton is an all day affair but never been there.

‘Mornin’ Guys

Wha...it’s Wednesday, that’s a good thing.  Saw the Disney Train yesterday, but of course, half the city was there.  Doesn’t anyone work or go to school?  Sheesh, the wait to the train was 2 hours long.  Saw the 3D premiere and it looks real good.  Jim Carey is a freak, gotta love it.  I’ll post pics on SPF.  Had fake snow and all.

Sent out 3 items yesterday from the big TRAIN SALE I posted on the “O” site.  More to leave.  Still have to price out that LGB stuff, that must go before ChristmasBanged Head.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps reaching 70 (possibly for the last time this calendar year).  Picked up (raked) sticks in the yard and hung Halloween lights last night.  Watched a PBS show (NOVA) on monitor lizards.  Love the scalies!  Did a little building with some old Halsam building blocks (before the bricks). Going to watch one of "my" soccer girls play in a college soccer game tonight.  May be my last soccer "fix" for the year as the 3v3 tourney that was going to be held this Saturday was cancelled due to lack of teams.  I had bacon and biscuits on the dining car for breakfast before sending it to "Points East".  TBIL, and I can drive after "Glee".  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Morning from chilly Southern Ohio

Going to have a cup o joe before going to work.

Jim – I am hoping what you say is true.  There are a few things I wanted to change on the layout and when I get the space back I will rebuild the layout.  I’ll let you know if I need to borrow some extra storage space.  Thanks for the offer.

Chief – Maybe something like an appliance dolly or a couple strong friends to move it for you

LAZ – A prayer for the eternal resting in peace of the soul of your Dad

SJ – If you ever get the chance the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Museum is fantastic

Got to go

May God bless

The subreflector is back and the results are in. It is fixed. No we just need a cold receiver to finish the testing. We are fairly happy around here.

Banks - my doc yanked me off the lisinopril and restarted the atenolol. I started taking it again last night and felt better today than I have in weeks. BP and heart rate is down too. Running up and down the scaffolding w/ relative ease (and lot of times). I think we are finally figuring this out.

 Don - Happy 30th!

cnwdoug - was up at the big scope tonight watching them get ready for observations. Pretty neat.

Well off to find something to eat and head to bed after a very long day.

Good Evening

Warmer today hi 60s.

Went with the church seniors to Selfridge ANG base to see the plane museum. Not very large but some nice planes  seemed to be just shells with everything closed up. Had lunch at the base golf course resturant and then came home and cut the grass. Maybe trim tomorrow.

Time to catch Doug M for his train ride home. Then banilla and the thingy ride.

HI GYZ,

Well closed down one pond and tomorrow nite the bigger one.  Not to bad had wife scrubbing down pumps, while I went into the ponds to disconnect and then clean out all filters and then cut back all vegetation.  Took about 1.25 hrs.  Now bigger pond will take close to 2 hrs.  Then put in plastic conduit and then place bird netting, to keep out leaves.

Went down and ran trains for my DAD, 11 years today that he died, still miss him.  Here's an OL MIL for you MOON!!!!

Stay frosty,

Aloha all. Wish I could see some of the myriad shooting stars out tonight but it's too cloudy. I'm just in the lab with my students working on their websites individually so I get to go around and encourage / help them one on one. My favorite class - no lecturing. Probably theirs too. Have a good evening. Hope to link up with some of you to 'ride' my train home at 830 CST using Yahoo Messenger. ;)

Don, Congratulations on the anniversary.  We like to celebrate our honeymoon....take a week and do a number of things together.  The Cruise was our anniversary this year, but perhaps a nice weekend away, perhaps Tahoe or something.  Just remember, anything in diamonds and pearls works too.

Chief, quite a story regarding the drunk driver.  Similar here, you call and tell them, they say they'll look into it.  One thing they could have done is send a car to the address on file for the tag number.  When the guy arrives, lock him up.  I had a car pass me in a double yellow line and speed in a school zone.  She had "Educator" tags to boot.  Told a cop and he said, unless he sees it, can't do anything about it.

Wife took the kids to see Toy Story 1&2 in 3D along with a friend and her children.  I watched the RFD program on the 1361.  Was a great show.  Shame about the results, but perhaps not everything that could have been done in the initial rebuild was done and they sacrificed for the sake of getting her running early.

Have a wonderful day...PS: it is in the 70s here, doors are open with screens to let the great fall air into the house.

God Bless,
Dennis
