Morning guys - furnace guy just left.  Waiting for a call back to see when we are taking our son to the doctor today.  I hope it's early - want to get a couple pieces of drywall and finish that wall today anyway.  It will be a pain to cut as it's on the stairs.  Maybe run the trains in a little while too Smile  Be back later - ttfn!

Afternoon all,

Just a quick check in during lunch.

Jim – As far as I know the earlier 736 had an operating door on the “back” side.  The 936 may have the non-operating door.

David Doyle has a book that is really good.  They regularly show up on eBay.  List is ~ $32 but I’ve seen them go regularly under $20.  It is comprehensive of O HO and S American Flyer stuff.

Fife – Thought of you several times while at Mickey World when I saw flamingos!

Jim F – For cut like on stairs I would get cardboard boxes and using the cardboard make a template then transfer it to the rock.

Lunch is over

May God bless

Jim

Good morning all, Well today is my birthday.  I am 73 years young.  I did'nt think I would last this long but I am grateful to still be here.  Need to order an N scale caboose for grandson who's birthday is on the 17th.  His Dad already got him an engine and his uncle got some cars.  I tried to get him started in O gauge but he does not have the room for a year round layout.  He still runs the Lionels at Christmas though on a carpet central line.

Meeting tonight with church social group.  Hope we don't get wet.  Rain is forcast off and on.  We got a little this morning.  Just enough to water the lawn but we need every drop.

Need to work on layout today and get bugs out of track.  Found one station track yesterday that needed a better ground.  The DCS signal was not getting through on that line for some reason.  Engines did not respond to controller.  Tried a temporary ground and it worked better.  Have to hard wire it today with solder and wires.

Giving a good work out to my newly repaired ACL E6 engines.  So far they are running fine.

Have a good day,

Ray

Ray,

        Happy Birthday.

Kurt,

I was looking through the list that you posted, and Walter "Killer" Kowalski stuck out. Walter Kowalski is the name of Clint Eastwood's character in Gran Torino. I wonder if there is some sort of connection there? Gran Torino is a great movie IMHO.

Happy Birthday Ray, many many more!!

Kurt--you should have been riding with me yesterday, we escorted 500 WW II Vets to dinner through rush hour traffic!!!!!  Fifteen busses with a full police escort, it was great.  We were invited to stay for dinner but it was getting late and I wanted to get home before dark .... anyone know the wind chill for 41 degrees with a 75 MPH wind???  Thankfully I dressed in layers and got along just fine.  Those Vets are in DC as I'm typing this, enjoying their WW II memorial, they'll be home later tonight, what a day.

Greetings from sunny Spain.  Still mid to high 70's here.  The locals say this is very unusual.  Cooling off this week, though.

Happy birthday Ray.

Bob - I'm not really in the plains, and the only trains I've seen are running in the valley or a cog railway up the side of Montserrat.  All of them electric!

Brutus - hope all goes well with your son.  Has your Holloween Gateman come in yet? If yours has, I might have something waiting for me when I finally get home. As for the drywall measure once, cut twice!?

Later all.

Kurt-- I did pretty well with the wind chill, my fingers were the only things that really got cold and that's with great gloves.  A couple of buddies were hurting, not as tough as they think they are, all of a sudden the old guy (me) looked a little smarter Cool it's all about layering.

what a day came home from work oiled cooler and vac'd carpet. said need to run trains no one home yea good idea "not" fired up ol cab2 right off red light no base found gotta love it. fixed it put new sp 260 3rd rail on track along with legacy gs4 fired em up get them running no smoke from 260 hmm so stopped all took sp unit off put on a diff oval seperate from legacy and smokes like crazy go figure. so decided to run an older first edition of atlas sw 8 gn diesel switcher fired up fine and again red light issue so much so that got distracted with the issue forgot to put bridge in place and of course no control of nada so off she goes and is now in line to become a sw cabless unit smashed the cab to smitherings!! I'm mad at me but mostly at you know who so tired of this issue. thanks for letting me boiler let off steam what a day. after that ran gs4 and decided to run a imperial big boy and a set of ac44oo diesels these have to be the 2 worst engines for smoking I've ever seen have to constantly blow down the stack. the big boy and ac 4400's under warranty so am taking it back to hobby shop this sat so they can fix them both only 2 months old man . so how the heck is everone else here today. I see mother nature was teasing us here in phx area expecting temps at or above 99 it was nice to be in the 80's. so how are those in snowbelt areas doing hunkering down in layout room or shovel in hand. have a good night CBQ

 Happy Birthday Ray!

CBQ - as soon as you said cooler I could tell you were from AZ:)

Just got back from campus after helping the boss finish up the machining, dissemble, and clean the parts for the subreflector. Tomorrow we finish cleaning and reassemble w/ locktite. Anybody heard of green loctite? Was a new one on me. Releases w/ hand tools and is supposed to be wicking, which I guess makes it different from blue. We go up on Thurs and after hopefully fixing the brake issue, put the puppy on. I'll prob go back on week long shifts as of next week even though we have a bit more maintenance to go (plus those pesky engineers need to show up w/ the receivers and all). Hopefully the doc w/ give me the clearance to work alone on Monday.

Back on observations mean more train repair time, but I promised myself to sell off some radios first and get some more car parts cleaned up before I got anything else to work on:)

Ray, Happy birthday!  Hope you had a great one, spent with the love of family and friends.
Brutus, Hope they got things straightened out with the bride's paperwork.  I know you are all getting anxious to get things started and her back to 100% on her health.
Jon, I didn't know you had speed limits of 75MPHConfused  Just kidding, glad you guys had a good time and I for one would like to thanky you for showing our vets the respect and honor they so richly deserve.  As an aside, we have a feature currently going on in the local paper where they highlight local war heros/vets.  This past week, they had a gunner from a B24 who took place in the raid on Ploesti.  Also have had a few fighter aces and MOH recipients.  Interesting stories that will soon be lost if not documented.

Well, had to work late...again as we had a late case and then had a possible emergency from the cath lab.  Fortunately, they handled things and I got to leave.  Lots of action on the forum and seems like a number of new folks here.  In case I missed anyone, Welcome....Tis a nice place to catch up on folks.

God Bless,
Dennis

Jon, I didn't know you had speed limits of 75MPHConfused

We don't!  But when I left the dinner I took I-80 home where the speed limit is 70 MPH and if one were to go the speed limit there's a good chance that you will be run over Banged Head so I try and go with the flow.  I could count on one hand the number of times I've had to speed on the bike, the worst one was on the outskirts of St Paul, MN trying to get to my son's home with a very black cloud with lightning on the starboard side bearing down on us  .....  and that was also rush hour, that was just insane.

I have to share with you that yesterday before we left the hotel I was able to visit with perhaps 15 vets, they were so grateful and so proud -- it just filled my heart with honor that I was able to talk with them even if it was only 30 seconds to a minute.  They were just overwhelmed with gratitude that there were enough people who cared about them and made these trips happen.  I hope someday we can do that for Viet Nam vets .................

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAY!  Prayers for many more happy years and fun with toy trains!

Wife called today and talked with caseworker, then called hospital and got a little run around - lady said she is moving offices and files are in boxes.  Wife told her she knows where her files are?  Then go get them, here is the number again, and she would call to verify that insurance received it.  She'll call tomorrow and believe me, I hope that lady did her job finally - 10 days late!

Test at the doctors showed my son has the flu.  Doctor said he should be better after 6 to 8 days, so we're hoping by the weekend.  He's happy because he is out of school, but has no energy really and very clingy.  Wife will take off tomorrow with him and I'll probably stay home on Thursday.

I'm hoping my daughter doesn't get it - we have 18 dollar tickets for Thomas on Sunday.

Harold - hi!  Well, I bought some 1 x 2 firring strips at Home Depot.  Since I was shimming over a gap between the cement and a higher board, I put one lengthwise at the top of the cement wall - actually about an inch down.  First I predrilled each board and countersunk for the cement screws.  These are blue and come with a drill bit for masonry.  I have a dewalt hammer drill.  I placed the board where I wanted it - held it in place and drilled through a center hole.  I then used a nut driver to screw it to the wall and leveled it - then worked to the ends.  For the uprights, I basically did the same thing.  Oh - after I had all the holes drilled, I took down the board and added a thick bead of liquid nails.  So I used the boards as templates for the holes and made sure that the heads of the screws would recess into the countersinks.  Interestingly, as the screw goes into the hole it lets go of the driver, so just screw it in until it is gone - magic!  I did give each an extra little twist with a phillips to clear that last little tiny bit.

The hardes part was doing this on stairs, because even though I was sitting or kneeling a lot, I was twisted sideways most of the time.  I think on a regular wall it would have gone a lot faster.

I tried to straighten out the boards as well as possible as I screwed them, but they still bow from side to side a little.  No big deal, since they will be under drywall obviously, but the 3/4 inch insulation I am cutting to put in the gaps is a real pain to fit - end up with little chunks of it all over - used a shopvac later.  I still have a little left to insulate.  On the wall at the bottom of the stairs, I did not add a header, but I did add a little footer, as I will install some molding down there.  I think that the insulation will work well to support the drywall between the firring strips.

JimSP - yeah, I'll make a template for the stairs, good idea Thumbs Up

Tardis is ready and I'm running late, so let's get a move on!!!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Ray,

I AM SORRY SO LATE ON YOUR BIRTHDAY WISH !!!

HOPE IT WAS A REALLY GREAT DAY !!!!

I'm going to have to plan a trip north soon, need to see that engine you got back, and take some more pictures.  BTW, how's that new camera working out?

The invitation is still open when you want  to make a trip down south here, No NC BBQ but at least it would be in the "Southerly" direction.

We are going to have to get our act together and get something corrdinated with Jon's trip west.  I would like to meet him, and maybe we can arrange a tour for him while he is here.  Seems to me he mentioned mid November.  That would be cool if it was possible to do Cal Stewart with Jon, Doug, You and myself.  Maybe might find a couple others.  Who knows.  Will need to get more info from Jon.

 I will do my part:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOO YOUuuu, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOO YOUuuuuu, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR RAYeeee, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOO YOUuuuuuu !!!!!    (Thanks guys for helping me sing it, you all just did, you know)

 Thankfully.

Morning everyone.   Looking forward to Thursday and Friday and meeting everyone again at York.

Chuck....We will look for that special caboose and the remote controlled tracks. BTW, I still have your magazines.  It has been too long.

Wes....Let's see we need to get some Buckeyes and a bone for the fifedog.  Should we take some shine for what is ailing John?

Left Coasters....If the fires don't get you, the mud will.
