sir james I

Good Morning

The sun is trying to shine through the clouds but 70 is it for the day. No global warning here, should still be in the low 80s.

Granny got the tomatoes canned but we need more. The two closest  real farm markets were trying to sell the 2nd rate stuff for canning and putting the good ones in the small high priced baskets. The second place had one good bushel so I grabbed it as we walked in. No plans  for today, yet....S.J.

Chief, have you sent those tomatoes yet?

Laz, that is one neat looking engine.  Would love to be closer to bid on it.  Won't do it without checking on it personally.  Also noted the cart from Farquar....that would be a great thing for someone like Dave Farquar who used to post here.

Chief, hope the weather is better for Frankie and the rest of you up there.  We had some heavy storms come through the last two days.

Well, kids are playing now, but for awhile they wanted to watch the Kennedy funeral on TV.  They had lots of questions.  I was not a fan of his to say the least, but it was a good chance to discuss government and our country with them.

Time for layout work.

Sunny and low 80's here.  Haven't checked the Pot for three days and find that I am 4 pages behind.

Laz - sounds like you had a good time this summer - with Tuesdays being double fun.

COO visited the plant on Thursday.  Presented us with an award for being second best performing plant in the corporation last year.  Then he proceeded to update us on the chapter 11 filing.  Seems that we are on track to come out as a privately held company later this fall.  Now the real ringer was when he started talking about getting rid of legacy costs.  The more he talked on the subject, the more worried I got about ever being able to draw from the pension I thought I had.  I carefully crafted (managed to edit out the four letter words before I sent it) an e-mail with appropiate questions to my boss, the HR manager and the plant manager.  The plant manager added comments and forwarded it to several people at corporate - including the COO - saying that I had good, valid questions that need to be answered.  Gonna be interesting to watch this one.  The corporate radar screen is one I like avoid showing up on.

Ran trains Thursday night to try and unwind from the pension worries.  Only problem I had was de-railing the Hogwarts tender on a sudden start.  For some reason, my Hogwarts loco requires lots of voltage to get it started.  It starts suddenly, taking off at a fairly high speed.  It will throttle back and run slower once it gets going.  Does anybody else have this problem?  I'm hopeing that it is a break in issue.

While I was running trains, I also decided to expand my collection of  'Lionel cars that launch something'.  Found an IRBM launching flat car on e-bay this morning.  With any luck, it will be here in time for the Labor Day edition of SPF.

Later all.

Pat, they are in the mail. Whistling       Haven't you gotten yours yet?    Laugh

That reminds me, SP, no mail from you???????

Big discussion on TCA email about trying to change the rules in other locations.  Some non-members sound off too.  Funny.

Had the usual hot dogs, chips and diet coke at Miss Edna's.  Interesting conversations with Terry who graduated from "Lionel's College".  BTW: they [Lionel] still denies that the smoke units with fans turning the wrong way have any difference in smoke production.  Laugh

Later.

Good evening Y'all!  Been playing Mr. Mom all day and now that SWMBO is home, time to play!  For anyone interested, ChooCHoo has a set of K-Line ABA F3/F7 for auction.  Right now, they are very reasonable priced at $269.  I have a set of these and they are powerful, well done engines.  They work best on 42" curves or wider, but can negotiate tighter.  Have TMCC and look great!

I'm not anyway associated with them, just know that I am very pleased with mine and thought someone here may like one.  Also, ChooChoo is good to deal with.

Aloha! Back from Tiffin, OH where I deeply enjoyed watching CSX trains run through campus whilst prevailing on the men's basketball team to unload the van of my daughter's earthly possessions. Thank goodness for the mini-van. Rained most of the way there yesterday, but had a beautiful day today for unloading and driving back. Thanks for the advice on the mom-daughter thing. You guys were right - lots of waterworks - but even I got blurry-eyed at finding a dryer load of her clothes here at home -- probably at the cost of shipping them to her. But I met her new best friend's parents who were very encouraging, with a strong faith.  Don B, I have ATT as a cell phone provider, full data package and text messaging. After an amazing hassle switching providers for the rest of the family to Verizon because it works in Tiffin, I got a signal. Can't wait to switch 'em back to ATT. Fife, congrats on 3K!  Lawson - where do you find those awesome NASCAR 'toons? 8ntruck, I hope you get a positive response to that email.... Jon, a beautiful B&O hopper arrived on the interchange track - what a gorgeous car.  Kurt, a car is going out to you this Thur.

Howdy guys - Welcome home Laz!  We missed ya, big guy!  Great pics, I stored them as Laz on da Job (n) Smile

Busy week here.  Buried my friend's son on my 15th Wedding Anniversary.  Went out to dinner with the family later.  I bought my wife some dvds she wanted for the event - they are in the mail.  Last night we went to the salon for family haircuts.  Worked today, then a nap, some videogames, a nice fish dinner and took daughter to B&N so she could spend some of her birthday money from last week.  Managed to read the new issue of Trains magazine about narrow gauge railroads while waiting at the hair place last night Thumbs Up  Glad you had a good trip, Doug!  Bill, good luck on the pension plan, hope for the best bro.  Hope all continue to do well and have a great weekend!

Tardis is ready and warmed up on the pad - btw, just saw that Tom Baker is reprising his role as Dr. Who, I guess for a special episode or tv movie?  Need to find out more about that, as he is my favorite all time Dr. Who Smile

Evening all.  Went to Walgreens and we got a call from middle SIL.  SIL and boy friend were at the Lone Star Steak House.  We hit I-540 and zipped over there.  Had a great steak and visit.   Now full of sweet ice tea and steak.  Sleep tight.

Morning.  Moving slowly.  Can't seem to wake up.  Three cups of coffee and still feel as if I could go back to sleep.  Cooler and not as humid.   Maybe a lazy day with trains.  Got a Hollywood car to mess with.  Since CA has so many fires, wonder if it is fire proof????  Later

Plans today include rearranging stuff in the basement, picking up 4 or 5 more sheets of drywall (son will help), and clearing out the front hallway where some stuff has been stashed for about a month. I need to go through some boxes as those who were helping us were a little exuberent in their desire to box things up. I've so far found a couple train magazines plus a remote in one box! I wondered where that went, lol!

HI GYZ,

This is what I purchased over the summer. The MTH docksider is like the real one I drove over the summer, and the National Bohemien Beer refeers were from VAGOLFER of OGR Forum, who had these specially made for anyone who wanted to order them.  They are truely beautiful, made by Atlas.

Mornin All.

They say that it is supposed to start cooling down a bit today, the question is should I believe that. Black Eye It was 108* thursday & friday and saturday the wife asks me when I get home from the museum about 6pm "is it still 110* out". No it had dropped to 104*. You can tell it has been really hot, as you walk by the electric meter all you hear is "Cha-Ching Cha-Ching Cha-Ching". Shock

Friday was regular run but saturday was a fun run for the kids club, each kid and a parent signed up in advance for a one hour period on a track. All went very well using Cab-1 and TPC for ops, only one crash. After doing some work on the lift bridge I forgot to reset a connector switch between the lower mains Blush. Had a headon between a MTH Cabforward and a Williams deisel. Fortunately it involved two operators who are not speed demons.

SJ. For emergencies such as someone being "unavailable to cook breakfast" you could always keep some goodies in the freezer. ie frozen sliders(not as good as fresh but out here we can only get frozen Sad).

This evening will have to spray outside for ants, between the heat and the 9 to 15% humidity they are going nuts looking for water & food. Went thru better than  a half bottle of windex in the kitchen spraying the little buggers, don't like to use the poisons in the kitchen.

Time to refill the mug and continue vegging. Dead

Good Afternoon everyone.  Was a fantastic morning at church.  Got a call last night and one of my coworkers wanted to bring his family to our church.  Had to meet up with them early on as had to get kids squared away in their Sunday school classes.  The older kids were with us in the sanctuary and really enjoyed it....says a lot.

Both our kids are a little under the weather with sore throats and sniffles.  Think I will keep them home tonight.  Got a big week at work and the kids have a lot going on with school.  Want to make sure they are healthy.

Have had some issues with IE8 on this computer.  Keeps wanting to shut down and then it "finds" the web site again.  Would let it pass, but it is getting more frequent, so we will try to figure it out.  Really doesn't like the Google Earth, etc.

Doug, they say that you can put some dried grits around and that it will kill the ants.  Not sure if that is so.  Like you, we have some extremes here and need to keep up with the spray.

Brutus, hope wife is doing well.  Really hope all goes well and that she is able to conquer this.  Be nice not to need transfusions anymore.

God Bless,
dennis

Partly cloudy and mid 70's here.  This summer was cooler than the last few years.  The grass never dried out either.

We went to the races last night.  Since the car has a bent spindle, and we did not feel like thrashing through the work and expense to get it back together, we did 'research'. Taped the heat races and main for the class we run in.

Two trips to Staples today.  1st trip was to get the proper firewire card and cable to download last night's 'research data' off of the video camera.  2nd trip to get a package of blank DVDs.  We ended up getting a wireless router and card too.

My wife bought herself a laptop computer last week to help run her fancy whiz-bang sewing/embroidery machine.  She needed internet access on that computer, and wireless was the easiest way to do it.

The wireless seems to work OK.  I'm writing this post from the computer in the basement we've been using for storing photos and digitized LP's.

Back to work tomorrow.  We've had several potential jobs that we have quoted n the past couple of weeks.  Encouraging.

Later, all.

Evening all.  Ants love Home Defense.  Buy it at Lowe's [I'm sure HD has it too].  I spray my house about every six months.  It says up to one year.  A guy on OGR was asking about silverfish.  Allan Miller and I told him about Home Defense.  Then here came the, "Better get the professional", bunch.  I did not say this is what they use as it would have started an argument.  No need for that.  Spray around the base boards all over the house.  I also spray anywhere outside they come in.  Around all windows and etc.  Works.  Had problems three years in a row.  Paid $99 each trip.  Lady did just that.  Then friend informed me of Home Defense.  Been doing it for three years now and no ants.  I spray around my layout too.  Also kills spiders, roaches and all bugs.  I spray around the walls in all my out buildings to.  Gets those pesty camel crickets out there.  BTW: I do use it in the kitchen around the windows, splash board and backs of cabinets [with everything removed].  Find the place on the outside wall whre they are climbing, spary it.   So much for bug control.

Had a lazy day.  Working on something for Hollywood. Whistling

Chat later.

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 60s????   Reffed two games Saturday, came home, took a nap, and mowed the yard.  Then I went over to my Dad's and watched the IRl race.  The first game I reffed was brutal.  Kids were wailing on each other.  I called more fouls in the first half than I have all season and gave out my first yellow card.  The keeper had the ball and the kid kept kicking at him.  Easy call, but the coach did not see it that way.  Should have carded him as well.  Game was very intense and ended in a 0-0 tie.  Second game was much, much better than I expected it to be.  Well played and well behaved kids.  Today I worked on the gas trimmer and finally got it running good.  All pieces of yard equipment are working quite well for now.  Watched the IRL race.  Briscoe won at the line.  Sarah and AJ's team were not factors and finished one lap down.  I had the regular fare on the dining car both days.  Beacon is lit.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Doug, I just checked the thermometer in a little dressing room beside my pool and it was 110 degrees in there about 4:30 PM.  Took a chance on walking this morning what with the bad air and all.  It did'nt look too bad but you never know what's in the air that you can't see.  I just walked for about 20 minutes instead of my normal 45.

Ran my trains for a little while early this morning about 7:30 AM.  I have been running my plated ACL streamline MTH cars a lot lately with various engines.  ACL-A-B-A, ACL E7 AA, and Pennsylvania scale Williams GG1 to simulate the Washington to New York leg of the ACL trains.  The RF&P, a bridge line from Richmond, Va to Washington DC handled the train on that part, however I don't have any RF&P engines so I just run the ACL through to Washington like the real ones did sometimes.  I have an A-B-A set of MTH E6 locos with proto 2 but they are in the shop now.  I run my Seaboard citrus colored E units on the plated cars sometimes even though they say ACL.  I have the yellow Seaboard cars that were made for the engine but they are not prototype.  MTH made some silver Seaboard passenger cars on a later run but by that time I had run out of interest (and money).

I'm getting a new Williams Pennsylvania Tuscan colored shell to swap with my green GG1 for a change.  It's enroute and due here next week.  I think Pennsy used the tuscan GG1's on passenger most of the time.  Now I have one of each and can switch back and forth if I wish.  Well, it's  cheaper than buying two GG1's.

Watched all the coverage on TV yesterday of the Kennedy funeral.  The scene in Arlington brings back too many bad memories from the 60's.  At least Ted Kennedy died of natural causes. R.I.P.

Looking forward to some cooler weather but don't know when.  September can be one of the hottest months here and that's when they have the county fair.  One reason I don't go anymore.  They got rid of the O gauge (Scale) layout that used to be under the grandstand which had been an institution there for years supposedly to make room for Star Bucks or some such thing to service the race track crowd.  Last I heard, they still have not used the space for anything.  The garden railroad outside is still operating.  A friend of mine belongs to that group.  LGB club operates it and replaced a historical special large gauge scale layout which had been there since the thirties I think.

TCA will vote to make some changes in by laws to comply with law regarding non profit organizations I here.

Good evening all,

Ray
