Afternoon all,

Just in from services going to get a quick bite and going to do a little gardening outside as it is not raining, yet.

Fife, I agree!

Jim T The AF stuff is very addictive.  I have several pieces inmy project to do box, but till I get my train room back, projects are on hold.  You wold enjoy two books if you do't already have them, The Standard Catalog of American Flyer Trains, by David Doyle, and theComplete Service MAnual for American Flyer Trains, republished several times, by different folks, mine is from Kline.

May God bless

Jim

EDW - Ohio was a very important state to win in the presidental election.  The then candidate Obama stated that if elected he would have DOE provide the loan garentee.  This one statement got him a LOT of votes.  That is what I was refering to.

Jim

Jim, now you know.  Not so truthful.

Jim, (and Chief), if anything, it appears that the President is bending over backwards (by providing $45 million dollars) to keep Jim’s company in the game until it can and demonstrate commercial readiness, and thereby meet the legal requirement for the loan guarantee.

Ohio voters are pretty savvy, and I can’t believe that they interpreted a campaign pledge to support the project as a commitment to disregard any existing regulatory requirements. No president has the legal authority to do that.

From the wording of the White House statement, backed up by the offer of $45 million dollars, it is clear that the President still supports the loan guarantee for Jim’s company, and, in all likelihood, that guarantee will be forthcoming, just as soon as they get their ducks in a row.

I can appreciate the frustration brought on by any delays, but rather than shout “You broke your word”, I suggest that a better response would have been to say, “Thank you very much”.

Not much of a train meet.  As usual, JUNK!!!!!  Did see one NS item but already had a bunch.  Lots of "stuff" that is 10 years old and wanting new prices for it.  Stopped by Sears and they rebalanced and rotated my Michelins.  Watching old movie on Westerns Channel.  Henry Fonda playing Wyatt Earp.  Think we are going to Olive Garden when wife gets home.  She has a gift certificate.  Later.

Sunny and clear here again. Sunday morning services are tough. Don't know why, but I always seem to go thru my phases there. Got to take the pressure tester (fuel, not blood:) back to my friend (don't want him to be w/o something he might need) and maybe some more work in the garage. Figured out why there were no messages on the old answering machine. The voice mail was already active.

cnwDoug - I think the scope was going to make like 140 jobs and more for the construction period. It's amazing that any new scopes are being built in this economy. Mauna Kea is a good site, they just have more diurnal effect due to the ocean. The elevation (14K) is easier to deal w/ though than most sites in Chile (16+). They also may be interested in getting more northern sky coverage. Will be a great facility.

don - We went up 395 when Dad was stationed at Edwards in the 70's. Don't remember that much of it though. Spent some time in Death Valley w/ the geology club in school. It is a spectacular area. The trees that someone mentioned are Bristlecone Pines and they are the oldest living organisms I believe. Glad to hear a field trip made another convert. That's pretty much how it went for me too. Where is your son going to school?

Mitch - a muffler for a Volvo in ME? Oh, boy. They seem to prefer Saabs up there, but prob not even then at that time frame.  I have chased the odd part in a few odd places. Driven on the battery in Mexico in order to get a new alternator in Yuma, etc. The most amazing was when an alternator went out on one of the university suburbans in Death Valley. Limped back into the Chevron at Furnace Creek (there's like 3 buildings there) and the guy at the station had the altenator which I installed. He got the new belt for us by later in the afternoon. Truck was operational again within a matter of a few hours and we didn't have to modify the trip. And the university reimbursed our advisor for the altenator. Since that time I was always tail end charlie on trips. That way me and the tools would always catch up to whatever vehicle had broken down.

Fife - Airbrushing? I think that would give that Kiwi lady w/ SI a serious challenge...

Off to my friends. We are finally going to install the kitchen faucet I gave them as a baby present last summer (I figured it would come w/ installation:).

This is my first post on the August Pot, in fact my first for about 2 weeks.  Time just seems to fly by.

I've gotten involved with a new O gauge modular group in the area, don't have a name yet as the first meeting was held just the past Wednesday. Will be using the Tinplate Tackers Standards with some minor modifications, one being the use of Gargraves track.

As I have not read all of the intervening posts, I hope everyone is doing well. I will try to keep up a little better in the future.

Taking two of the grandkids fishing tomorrow. That might be the last for the year as both they and I have a lot scheduled before they go back to school on August 31. The Elizabethtown Fair is held the week of August 24 and we will all be busy, they showing goats, sheep, hogs and cattle, me cooking for our church food stand and watching the kids show their animals.

Hope everyone has a nice week.

We have raised sheep and cattle, and our kids and grandkids showed both, but to show goats, sheep, hogs and cattle is a first for me. They must spend a lot of time training and preparing  for the show ring. My hat's off to them!Bow

Greeting from NW Iowa, Lake Okoboji, one of the three natural blue water lakes in the world.  Arrived this afternoon w/granddaughter in tow, giving the parents a three day break and we love it.  Spent 9 hours yesterday painting new drywall in Cedar Falls (flood damage repair from last summer) and finally snuck away w/granddaughter to the train store,  Classic store, huge inventory, kinda dingy with great prices.  My best buddy is a great sport, she'll go anywhere with Grandpa, treated her to a new book just down the street.  Not much sleep the last two nights as we've been on air mattresses, they are only one step above the floor-------the slow leaks about did us in the first night, ugh. That will change soon as the son is doing a custom Murphy bed in the newly remodeled downstairs.

She's now in the same room with us for two nights but i think she's so tired right now that I hope she sleeps in tomorrow.  I'm in the resort lobby, only place for WifFi, seems kinda odd as this place is expensive but right on the lake.

I love coming back to this area of the state, it's where I was born and it always feels like I'm home as this is where all of our family was from, only one aunt left and she's 83.

Tomorrow AM the granddaughter and I will have our first fishing experience, I bought her a small rod and reel for this trip, she's three so it's time to learn how to fish, she's really fired upThumbs Up  Hope we can catch at least one fish!

Time for bed as I'm sure Grammie is done reading books and they are both asleep.  Sure wish it was June 2 instead of August 2.

Howdy guys!  Well, can't believe the weekend is over already!?  Nice chats last night and tonight.  Yesterday, I worked 6 then went to my buddy's house with my son to help him fix up his boat.  He's adding livewells in the new benches he built.  Carpet is all on and he also made a new console custom to fit all his equipment.  It's a small pontoon boat and a lot of fun.  We have had so much rain, though, that he is still not ready to have the new cushions made and upholstered for the boat Sad  Well, we got rained out yesterday too, but did have some fun - he showed my son some of his guns as well as his USN Cutlas (he's a retired Chief).

Today it was clear and not too hot until later in the afternoon.  I mowed the yard while the kids trimmed and swept up - they did a good job too Smile  When I got done and took a shower, my wife wanted to go out for dinner.  15 minutes later, we were at the Texas Roadhouse.  It was pretty good, but pricey I thought.  Then, we picked up a headset with microphone for my wife's netbook computer and tested the videoconferencing again - worked well!  Tomorrow, she has a doctor appointment and we hope to hear more about the testing on her sisters.

The beacons are on the screen and Mike, I'll let you drive, but be careful with the key okay?  Wink  Picking up a distant signal from Finland too Thumbs Up  Some banilla will be great!

Sink faucet installation went well and I think I may have made a couple more single handle converts. Nothing like dealing w/ 50+ year old plumbing in the wall though. As I sure most of you know, you go carefully. Since they have a 1 yr old it may come in handy though. When I gave it to them, my buddy said it was quite literally a baby shower present.

Will sign off since I have to get up early for this next test in the morning and drive to the northwest side. Brutus, hoping and praying that you and the wife get good news tomorrow.

Good Evening All !  Most importantly hoping that the medical tests all go well for everyone!

Had a relaxing day, wershed the cars, made a trip to LHS and picked up another pair of signal gates, (bday gift), had BBQ with wifes family.  Chris picked up a "B" branding iron on the trip so we identified about everything we could find in the back yard.  Wife had a special mat that goes down on the patio deck under the grill.  Even branded that.  Then watched photos and videos from the trip.

One of the areas we visited is best defined by the web for Fossil Falls,  It was really spectacular!  And, I couldn't believe how many times I have driven by it and not stopped.  Will post some more info on some of the places we went, Virginia City, Red Rock State Park, Convict Lake, Mono Lake, Carson City, Obsidion Dome, Tom's Place, Reno, Harrahs Car Museum, Bishop, Owens Valley, and more.

Bob, Yep we saw the Bristlecone Pines as well, he is currently planning on xferring to CSULB in the spring, second choice is CSF (Fullerton), both schools are within commuting distance.  His desire is to live at home, save money, until he graduates.  He is just finishing up at a Jr. College and will get a AA in Business.  I think another reason is his girl friend of 3+ years is very close, and also attending CSULB.  Honestly, I will be surprised if he gets in this spring, due to the budget cuts, but we will see.

John, sounds like you and the family have another jam packed month planned.  I'm surprised the kids don't have any issues when the animals meet their ultimate destiny.  Seems that could be tough after working with them so much.  Good luck with the train club!  Sounds like you all may be taking the modules for public display, sounds like fun.

Chief, still having issues with the emails, still cant figure out what is going on.

Late here, and gotta go back to work tomorrow,  Hope everyone has a good day.  (BTW, Tardis light is off here tonight, need some rest.)

Mornin' Guys!

Spent Saturday at the Dance Team Car Wash, they raied about $250.  I snuck out for about an hour to get to my HOG meeting.  Went to Denny's for dinner.

Sunday brought a lot of electronice stuff (TV's, stereos) to Goodwill, cleaned out the house, cleaned out some of my car parts, charged the battery in the station wagon and ran that for a while.  Took a ride to work to feed the kittens and do a little work.  Went home and preped for dinner.  I got the HD out for a ride to visit the wife at work.  My daughter put the food in the oven.  Got caught in a shower a mere 1 mile from my house AGAIN.  Watched Gene Simmons on A&E, which is hilarious!!!!

I'm going to start getting the lumber to redo my small layout.  I didn't frame it properly the first time, so now I'll do it right - pictures to follow...

Angel to youse that need 'em.

Dennis, this is from the Secret List:

UPDATE: BATTALION CHIEF KEVIN KILLEEN-NEWARK NJFD SURVIVES SKYLIGHT FALL:

Chief Killeen has had 2 major surgeries since this weeks 4 alarm fire where he fell. Of the surgeries,  1 was to repair his back and 1 to repair his shoulder. The Chief is awake and even smiled today. He will be moved to a step down unit hopefully on Monday and will not be able to stand for 6 weeks. After that he will need to move to a rehab unit for an extended time. Those who were with him today wrote and advised that naturally it was great to see him smile and while he is seriously injured..he will live to tell his story. Outstanding.

Will catch up later - nice to see John Bakeer again!!

Aloha everyone. A beautiful day here in Chicago. Looks like a busy one which is fine - I want to clear away some of the blueprints littering the desks. I've been picking up a few neat advertising magnets here and there to hang on some of my metal bridges. Anyone else do that?

Doug .... great idea on the magnets ... plus you can take some of the newer thinner ones and edit/shrink and print railroad signs or any posters on your printer and glue them to them or take a blow dryer and remove the old advertisement .... I always grab a handfull when they have them available anywhere . What's nice is they can be curved to any water tower  or building also .... and just glue them on to wood or plastic .... they make a nice base for signs and small billboards . Thumbs Up . I've taken grankids photos and mounted them for the fridge .

Brutus .... cool new avatar !!!

Submmbob .... finally about 3 years ago I replaced ALL my faucets and tub/shower units with the new washerless ones ... best thing I ever did ... no more drips forever !!!

Just got back from the esophagram. Fun. Get to eat and drink again which is good. So having a cup while posting on the pot. Radiologist said nothing stood out, but said he will take some more time to look at all the pictures. I have a funny feeling it will be another, "well, you still feel like crap most of the time, but we can't find anything wrong w/ you". Egads. Just chased the office down about the lab results. I guess we will see.

Ole Timer - yeah, the single handle Delta style is the way to go. This was interesting as it is the classic West Coast Wallmount. Funny part is that this was a friends and the house I am renting still has a two handle style in the kitchen. If it goes out while I'm here I'll make a suggestion to the owners to upgrade.

Don - sounds like you had a great trip, other than the brake job anyway, but I guess that could have been worse. Best of luck to your son. I know tuition there  is a bit of a hurdle. I not that familiar w/ any of the CS geology programs, but I'm sure they have some good ones. Recently heard of a retired geologist in CA that does geologic mapping of vineyards, for cases of wine! Apparently the different rock formations from which the soils are derived can make a big difference. There are a series of books called Roadside Geology which you might find interesting. I think CA is dived into two books. They have been written for most of the states.

Well, time to go find something to eat and off to meetings at the university. Going to try riding the bike down. Haven't done that since this all started. Getting tired of driving the jeep a mile to have it sit in the garage for the priviledge of providing Parking & Transportation $5. We'll see how that goes.

Back later

Wasn't even aware of any activity until I heard it on the radio late this afternoon.  Sounds as they were pretty significant, I would think there should be some pretty good waves as a result.

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 80s.   I was going to post this morning and I got so busy at work that when I realized I had not done it yet, it was almost time to go home.  All sorts of comings and goings at work and re-arrangings.  One thing about the public health sector is that people either change jobs a lot or not at all as there seems to be no middle ground.  I helped coach tonight with "my" soccer girls and I may have a few "newbies" assigned to me the next few weeks to get them up to speed.  I also went to the YMCA to do weights.  I had bran muffins on the dining car for breakfast.  Beacon is lit and I will try to hang onto the keys this time.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Got the new dishwasher installed this evening.  I was getting really tied of doing dishes!  Spent a little time working on the truck getting it redy for our camping vacation later this week.  We will be heading out Friday and back the following Friday.  Instead of Colorado, we are going to the UP in Michigan.  Maybe you guys have a solution.  Water cam pouring out of the blower housing the other day after the truck sitting in the rain.  The foam insulation arounf the blower housing ws really wet, but the water did not have a stagnant smell as if collecting for a bit, so I think it is rainwater.  Any ideas where it could be coming in?

Doug - neat idea with the magnets.  I have a flag magnet n my coaling tower.

Take care and may God bless

Jim
