David,

Having been a member of AARP now for a decade I'm sad to report that there is no discount at toy train stores. However, perhaps we could design a bib that says "old guy reliviing his childhood", I think the biggest advantage of belonging is the ability to always get a discount at motels, pays for the member ship the first time.

Happy Birthday Dave. Dr. John really ahs a lot of influance "upstairs". Dropped snow on those Yankees. [;)] Good old Rebel Pastor. Could not get on computer last night. Came in late from BPS. handled customers until 8:45. Then took 30 minutes to drive 5 miles. Too many Yankees down here for the visit. Tour buses everywhere and no one knew where they were going. [banghead][banghead][banghead] Then some guy lived in the computer room so I went back upstairs and watched TV. Store opens late this AM. Out of here by middle of afternoon. Sould be back into RDU by 6 PM. [:)] Sure good to see so many visiting the coffee pot. April 15 is the first birthday of the coffee pot. Buckeye says he has something special for that day. Better watch out for him. [;)] Hope all have a great day. God bless all.

Happy B'day Dave,

I too have ben a member of AARP for the last coupl'a years. Nice little discounts on this and that but don't count on them for low cost auto insurance. Better to shop online for auto insurance through Progressive, Geico and AIG for the lowest rates.

Incidentally, gas is at $2.68 / gal. ( for regular ) here at the local service stations. what are the rest of you guys payin'? Won't be long before we see $3.00 / gal. gas or maybe even $4.00 by the Summer travel season. Not a good time to be in the RV sales business or to be a long haul trucker ( Diesel's the highest of all ). If things keep going like this, private automobile transportation will be a thing of the past ... and Bush wants to scuttle Amtrak ... Sheesh!

Hi everyone! Worked today, & what a day, YUK!! Had to be 6 or 8 inches of snow in the train yard. Hard walking, air lines burried & hard to find, only thing good was the overtime! ( Need it for next train show, anyway! [:D]) Gas at 2.09$ here, that's high enough for me! Gotta try & post a pic of our buys at train show yesterday. Thanks, John

Bright and sunny here today. Temp. reached into the upper 60's though a bit breezy but nothing like yesterday's 40 mph gusts.

Added a few pieces of wildlife to the layout today, a pair of mountain sheep and some feral hogs.

Roger,

Mountain sheep in Georgia!

Where I lived in arkansas, ferral hogs were called razorbacks. They can be pretty ornary. Running thru the woods got us both wet and muddy. Trying to dry out and relax with a glass of Port. Life is good.

oops, Roger, must have been the Port. The critters are on the layout, not outside. OK.

Hello All: Rain & Wet snow & windy up here, Power going on & off for short periods of time, Gas is 91 cents a litre up here I will let you guys do the math on that one. David: That must of been quite an honour to be in that colour guard. I was sorting out my late Father's coin's today, Face value alone is 8-10K, He had a toolbox full of them, Canadian,U.S. British, this is going to take a while to catalogue & figure out what to do with them. They get split between the four of us, so this should be an interesting exercise. Everyone have a safe week. Kind Regards To All Steve

Good Morning,

A wonderful weekend in Iowa, temps in the 70's both days and today should be another good one, I'm amazed and happy that we dodged the snow bullet.

My wife ordered 4 bolts of black material yesterday for the skirting of the benchwork and is checking in to a "pleater" for her sewing machine. I didn't realize this was going to be such a project but then again if it's worth doing, it's worth doing it right the first time. This might be one of those "lets stay inside where it's cool" July projects.

I'm sure enjoying spring and working outside, seems like it's been a L O N G winter and I'm sorry for those east of us that had this last shot of snow and rain. We did have one tornado warning last week so I suppose we are now entering that season.

Have a good day.

Morning friends and neighbors!

The soggy south is the sunny south once again! [8D] Beautiful morining today, about 70 degrees with a light breeze. We Alabamians enjoy our two weeks of spring before our 6-7 months of summer comes in. [;)]

Chief, I wish I could take credit for the snow that fell on the Yankees. All I can say is "GO BRAVES!" [:D]

Time for another cup of coffee as I get to (Chief, don't look!) WORK!!! [:O]

Have a good day, y'all, from the "Rebel Pastor" ( I kind of like that, Chief!)

Morning gang. Sunny and warm. Busy as got in late last night. Delta got most of its planes in Orlando grounded by FAA yesterday [think, kids, spring break, Orlando!!!!]. Medical kits on planes expired. Big Zoo. Got in 2 1/2 hours late last night. I was lucky. Some got put on chartered busses [yes to RDU and Mobile AL and other places]. Several of us had decided to stay and make them put us up. They were saying it would be Tues AM before they could get us out if we did. They found some kits and our plane was one to get it. Big mess. Now Yanks, us Rebels are going to give you some slack. Nice weather. Mess with us again, you get more snow. [}:)] Got to get busy. God bless all.

Hello Everyone! Dave I got a good laugh about BB the Beagle rolling on a Fi***hen downhill into a river.Guess she got her weekly bath that way.?[;)][:)] Maybe you can produce a line of shampoo for Dogs that like to smell like Fish. All you have to do is saturate them with it & let them roll into a river or go through a car wa***hen they'll come out sqeaky clean. Maybe BB is trying to save you time by giving herself a Bath in the River![:D] Then you'll have more time for your layout I guess! Have a nice day everyone.....................Keith

Good Morning All,

NE Ohio has Blue Clear Skys with temp at 62. Now some areas will have flooding from all the snow this weekend. Cleveland set a new snowfall record this weekend and is now at 105.5” for the season. We pick up about 8” on the east side and just southeast of us, where I used to live, they had over 24” of snow fall with 5’ drifts. Over 100,000 people with out power and the county declared a state of emergence. It will take until Tue for most to have their power back.

Chief – cong on going RED

We are at home today, down with sinus and swollen glands.

Pick of the day

all be safe

Tom, I know how you feel - allergy season is here with a vengence - sometimes I'm glad I work among concrete canyons and airconditioning. I hope you feel better. Chief - only 700i***o go before you catch David. Boy, I'm glad I don't have to travel for work - your airport adventures are just too much.

Happy Opening Day to you all - 4 1/2 hours until the White Sox play the Tribe....

well, I missed the Sunday photo thing; but here's a monday photo thing;

After the rain on Saturday, I visited the Manassas industrial area (NS) in Va., to shoot some point rails.

Point rails are generally very greasy. The point of the grease is so the point rail can slide from one point side to the next, by action of the throwbar. Point rails, btw, are called point rails, because they are very pointy. I think that’s a good point to keep in mind and it helps you to visualize point rails better. Remember, think “pointy.”

It would be pointless to look at point rails as works of art. Yes, they are decorative and sort of sexy in a pointed way, but points are functional as well, pointing the trains in different directions, in fact, points can point in the direction of every point of the compass depending how the tracklayer points them.

Switch rods hold the points in gauge and help to bend the points from side to side. These don’t pivot like toy train points, they bend! Point made.

A NS train successful negotiates the points on a trailing turnout movement. This train is headed for Front Royal and points west. The engineer was friendly and made a special point of waving back to me.

Points are important on Dave Vergun’s (that’s me) handlayed track point to point pike. He built a functioning target switch stand that turns the points when you twist the target. Every part of the target switch was made from a copper plumber pipe and copper from a Romex cable. Total cost was about 50 cents. He hopes to make some good points with the reader to show that scraps of metal can be treasures for pointy headed people who wear pocket protectors for their pointy pencils.

BB the beagle gazes out across the white posterboard I used as a backdrop for taking the picture of the turnout. Frankly, she’s bored with the turnout and all of the points. “Point me to the rabbits,” she whines. “Thems all the points I need.”

Dave Happy belated! I was at work all day yesterday so i didn't know. Cool point pics. I think point rails could be be viewed as art. Andy Warhol viewed soup cans as art....they are decorative and functional! [:p]
