Hey MTH fans. Do you think a 5 year old, new in the box, never ran MTH engine with Protosound would need a new battery before running? Would using the old battery(i'm sure it's dead) screw things up. What are your thoughts..Tim

OK Pigseye,

A five year old engine. Yep, I would definitely put in a new battery. Check if it’s a PS1 or PS2.

2004 –5 = 1999 would be a PS1 or 2005 –5 – 2000 would be PS2. Get the model number and we can check it on the MTH web site as to which it is.

A PS2 with a bad (dead) battery won’t run right, if at all, but won’t hurt it. A PS1, would most likely scramble the board.

Who would stoop so low to send you a smarty email from Ohio? [?][?][?][?][?][?]
Don't you mean they sent you a smart email loaded with good information about toy train transformers to keep you from making a Suthern Bubba of yourself. [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

The incredible thing about the tow boat is that is not a little boat. Since there were two stacks when he started, I would guess he has two big diesel engines. They would be similiar in size to those used in a train engine. [:0][:0][:0][:0]

PE Tim, if the board is scrambled, the engine won’t run, just sits in natural. MTH does sell a kit to unscramble the board for $25.00. It includes a new battery and chip puller and can be used over again.

Hiya PE tim I figure blue is appropriate because at 0 a good Tim's skin would turn blue. And how did you guess that was I. On the left coast, we don't know how to vote, except for Arnold, we can't drive, especially in the rain, we do love trains, we don't think there are any other states east of CA, and we can't drive tugboats, we have never seen one. OK the navy has some, but in the civilian world, we have never seen one.

Chief, you must be bored with the good weather, all you want to do is hunt and fish, or you are retired, same thing isn't it ? How are you feeling ?

Tom, that is too much, too cold, too fast. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Have a great night all,

I was wondering if there would be interested in seeing pictures of the new Alaska Railroad Passenger Station that is being built here in Fairbanks, AK. I am not sure how many new passenger terminals are being built these days but I know there has not been new one in Fairbanks in a long time. I would be glad to post a couple of pictures each week as they continue working on it.

I have noticed the weather seems to be of interest to this discussion so here is note on Fairbanks weather– tonight it has warmed up to a balmy -26°F. The past few days the temps have been running between - 38°F to -50°F with a nice thick blanket of ice fog. By Sunday we may even climb above zero!

Kevin, I have been waiting for someone from Alaska to jump on here and put this so called cold weather in perspective. Ice fog is so cool, especially when you are trying to breath the air. Cough....Cough..

Post the photos. That would be interesting especially how they protect the work in the cold.

Good Morning all,

NE Ohio is very warm compared to Fairbanks and AKKevinT. Temp at 30. Last night we pick up only 2” of snow which melted off because the ground was so wet. Do you believe Fairbanks at -38 to -50, darn that’s cold!!! [:0][:0]

PE Tim, If you are going for that MTH PS1 engine, maybe replace the battery with a BRC, then never have a battery problem again.[8D]

Buckeye – the tug boat was great. Some days here at work, I think I know how the captain of it fells. [}:)]

Laz--

Hopefully you'll have a late start and an early out, I loved those days. An early out would be the best then you could start on the DCS immediately. It's a wonderful system and the learning curve is very low, keep us posted on your progress.

Too cold here to even mention it[:)]

Good morning all, it is 43 this AM here in Sunny San Diego. Will top out again with no clouds, around 70. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh winter, San Diego style. Hope everyone is sitting down and have a good cup of joe.

Me I made 8 cups today, to warm me up, then gotta have a protien bar and a smoothie. Lost over 35 pounds and dropping more. Already got down to pre holiday weight, now to get back on losing.

Chief, San Francisco has such an interesting wealth of ideas, SoCal is nothing like there. Hope the sinus' are doing better.

Jon and Laz brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Come on out to SD and warm up. Fishing been good, and it is nice to go to the beach this time of year.

AKKevinT really brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Would love to see the pics.

For all, great time to come to SD, see the railroad museum, see the ocean, hang out and get a tan.

Off to the smoothie making. OJ, pinapple, banana, and some kind of berry today.

Take care all Have a great day [:D][:D][:D]

Boy and I thought the lower 48 was bad it sounds brutal but you still have the prettiest state in the country. Would like to get up there take a few train trips and backpack in the area. Heard you could take atrain, backpack for as long as you want come back to the tracks and wait for the train to come back to pick you up.
Hope to see your pics.
You could post them on Sunday Photo Fun with our own SPANKYBIRD.

Hey Laz, had to stop back in for some supplies, thought I pop on here real quick. It has warmed all the way up to 51. Woo Hoo. Keep thinking warm happy thoughts.

Chief, you need to get a sega dreamcast. Its a video game system discontinued, meaning real cheap. It has the ultimate fishing game on it, Sega Bass fishing. You throw the line out, troll with different lures, and try to catch fish. The controller will vibrate when one strikes the line. You can even break the line or lose the fish if you do it wrong. Way cool.

Hello all!

Just back from Phoenix/Mesa AZ. Hard week and it is good to be home for at least one night before we head out on the Scout campout on the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi.

Jim D was on his way to Phoenix - I softened it up a bit for him. Be aware that I am not talking about the bed in the hotel. A WMD would not soften that thing up.

American Airlines softened me up a bit. My luggage on Monday went to Sacremento! How do I know? They had to ship it to Phoenix on America West and gave me the flight number. I asked if my luggage would also contribute to my frequent flyer miles - but those airline personnel are SSSOOOOO friendly these days aren't they?

I did get it back on Tuesday. Good thing one pair of underwear is good for at least 2 days!

Well, I've got to go pack. Will try to check in a bit later if possible. Beautiful day here - 50's and sunny.

Take care all.
Roy

Hi Gang Beautiful blue skies and a brisk 5 degrees at noon
Was a little cooler at sunrise -10. Thought I would send a pic to my former statesmen in Texass.

Thats the train room over the garage, with quite a view out the back windows, down the mountain.
I may be stupid(or numb) but I can't tell the difference between-10 and -30.
Took a "train day" today. Turned the heat on in the shop at 8 am 2 hours later it was 25 and all the glue bottles were frozen.

Spanky.. What is a BRC battery and where is it available.. Warming my glue...Tim

Tim,

The BCR is the Battery Component Replacement from J and W Electronics 717-417-2820; www.jandwelectronics.com.

This is a replacement for the Lionel and MTH batteries (9 v style). The device is a bank of "super" capacitors that charge up while the loco is running. Intermittent power (short outages) does not interrupt the sound (or control) of the electronics. When the loco is powered down, the capacitors hold just enough charge to allow the electroncs to shut down before the charge runs out on the BCR.

There were quite a few discussions last year over on the OGR forum and there is even a diagram from one contributor on how to make your own (although the price from J and W is not so bad considering the time and expenese of buying all the parts needed and then building it).

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Roy

Hi Tim,
The BRC really isn't a battery, it's a battery component replacement.
