Good day Tom and all at the bar. Drinks for all and a pint of Guinness for me. I was tied up all weekend with family matters (birthday), so I couldn't post any pics. I was able to transpose an Autocad® drawing to a JPG file to post here. It is just the drawing I'm working on for the DD-1 model.

Here are a couple of other images.

G'day Gents!

Time for a NEW series to promote discussion of REAL Classic Trains here at "Our" Place:

Now Arriving on Track # 1

Back in the Day - Number One

Remember the Pullman Company Question [?]

Back in the day a significant part of an overnight trip aboard a passenger train was the attentiveness given by the crew. Check these services, considered routine, for the traveler:

(1) Each passenger personally greeted by the Conductor to ensure and verify that the reservation and accommodation is correct.

(2) Your bags carried to your room by a Pullman Porter.

(3) Room features (light switches, call buttons, etc.) explained by the Porter.

(4) At the touch of the call button, the Porter arrives at your room to turn down the bed while you enjoy a night cap in the lounge car.

(5) With passengers asleep, the Porter's work continues to include shining shoes left in lockers accessible from outside your room.

(6) The Conductor and Porter ensure that all defects requiring attention by the service crews at the layover point are made known (burned out lights, torn or tattered cushions, etc.). These are annotated on the forms and paperwork required for each journey.

Enjoy! Thumbs Up [tup]

Greetings Kaiser Tom The Great and House Of Lords,

A round for the boys and an extra large for da Larsman if you don't mind......

LoveDomes, It's fun and great to be here. Probably will take me a few blue moones before I get the hang of things here....Bow [bow] Curve balls are great as long as they don't come back and hit you in the back of your head...Laugh [(-D] Some really great people around here to say the least.

Great pics on CP as well, looking forward to see some CN now to even things out...Wink [;)]Laugh [(-D]

And now a studie in locomotive design....

Denver & Rio Grande Western 4-6-6-4, #3710, works a long freight out of Helper, Utah, 1939.

A monsterous Denver & Rio Grande Western 2-8-8-2, #3609, is
about to lead a freight out of Salida, Colorado one November
day in 1939. Coal smoke from the engine hides the front of
the boiler.

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!

Ruth my deAH, ‘tis the Larsman with a powerful thirst today! I know it's just a bit early, BUT . . . a tall tankard of Shaefer ‘n a Larsman Special should hold me ‘til later . . . Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Round for the house ‘n treats for the crittAHs. Boris, don't forget to take Artie outback for his "field mouse"! <ugh> And of course the small jar of PPF is for YOU! <grin>

Nice weekend Question [?] Hope so. Aside from some thunderstorms, things have been just fine in far "upstate New YAWK"! Gonna be hard to say goodbye to all of this, but the time has come. We depart tomorrow - so I'll not be back ‘til perhaps Wednesday, but most definitely Thursday. Behave yourself, Boris!! And of course, Ruth, you ‘n I have lots of <ahem> admin matters to catch up on. Yeah!! [yeah]

Really a bunch of stuff to check out over the weekend, highlighted by those great Alaska trip pix from Da Boss.

I think the morning summary pretty much covers anything that I'd add, with this exception for Eric:

As far as I know, the D&H loco inventory did include EMD - SD45's come to mind. However, their passenger trains were more "known" for the Alco ‘n RF16.

Here's a link on the non-EMD locos:

http://www.joshuakblay.com/dhsurvivors.html

ALSO for Eric: Sorry that you wound up on the binnacle list this weekend. Taking it EASY means just that! Ease up on the throttle - there will be plenty of time for full speed ahead later on. /s/Doc Lars! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

AND for Jan:

Don't know what to tell ya, mate. Gotta READ what's happening at the bar in order to become a regular. It's fun having you aboard, but you surely throw the curve ball quite well! <grin>

FINALLY for Pete: So you visited TWICE on Saturday! Well, I'd say you worked your way ALMOST fully back to my good graces. HOWEVER, since you're departing for a long absence, by the time you get back . . . . well, let's put it this way, your "dipper" will be the "thimble"!! <uh oh>

I do have a REQUEST: Unless there's a compelling reason why not, could I be FIRST for the RR Book Relay???? I say that because I'm not really sure how much time I'm gonna be spending on "the island." Got some ‘things' coming up in the fall, with perhaps a trip to the Keys - not sure right now. I don't want to hold up anyone waiting to get it. So sending the book to me now will push me to read it - then I'll forward it on. Thanks! Thumbs Up [tup]

Now for something to compliment Cap'n Tom's Canadian History Month posting . . . You've seen ‘em B4, but they are worth looking at again! Thumbs Up [tup]

Until the next time! Thumbs Up [tup]

Greetings Master Tom and gentlemen.....

First of all a large dram of finest whisky for the gang and nice Cuban as well please.....

Puts a few $ in the tip jar and jukebox.

As you all know by know I love railroads and American in particular Bow [bow]...... Of course the steam is the stuff closest to my heart. But you can't really say no to some nicely painted first generation dielsels, can you? Also, some of the electrics are rather tasty as well....Yeah!! [yeah]

I can tell you that I sometimes sit here with ,my face green of envy for you guys that had a chance to see this first hand, or even work with the real thing. To me you're some lucky Censored [censored]Wink [;)]Laugh [(-D]

Once thing that I like best with the Classic trains Magazine are the first hand stories that sometimes are futured there. I don't care if they were an engineer, fireman, breakman or working on the trackgang. They all worked hard and to their best ability, regarding weather, tools and so on. So to me they all deserve the same credit, they're all needed to make the railroad work and run as smoothly as possible. I enjoy reading some stories about railfans and photographers and their ups and downs too, we're all been there, right?Banged Head [banghead]Laugh [(-D] I always take time to listen when people in their best years want to share their life experience with me. Young people today are too busy or doesn't care to do that, which I think is a shame....(I'm sorry if step on someone's young feet here).

Tom, that stuff goes on stil today between my friends and me. "My" railroad is bigger and better than your "backyard" railroad wannabe etc... My friend that likes the UP and AT&SF usually is the one that catches the flak or he that likes the D&RGW, which is in good clean fun.

coalminer3, See, that's you already qualified for the "lucky Censored [censored]" club....Wink [;)]Wink [;)]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]... The class J and all the N&W steamers are some of my alltime favorites. I remember having a wee white thin book with O. Wisnton Link photographs and a record in the back (I actually have two copies of that record), with a freight train with a Y and a A and passenger train on the other with a J. I like the sound of the J and their awesome whistles and when the lady starts to play Silent Night on the churchbells on that record, that doesn't hurt either. But, the side with the class Y and A and the heavy train working uphill Wow!! [wow]Bow [bow], that gives you real chills down your spine, especially when they reach the summit and engineer start to blow the whistle which cracks first before it sounds right..... I mean, is there ANYTHING that sounds more lonely than a steamlocomotives steamwhistle in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere. Bow [bow]Bow [bow]

EricX2000, I agree with you totally. A class J doing switching duties, that's nothing less than an insult to those that designed and built them I'd say.....sad indeed.

So, I really look forward to "hear" more of your stories from the railroad scene. Maybe we can have story telling evening or something....?

Enjoy your dram and Cuban lads.

G'day Gents!

Things must be right in the world, as CM3 Shane has begun the day for us with another of his "patented" Posts! Thumbs Up [tup]

Time again for the monthly rundown on Canadian RR History!

Significant events in Canadian RR History during the month of August.

<A form of this was initally Posted on Page 381 of the Original Thread>

Caveat: Much of the information appearing was gathered from internet sources, with credit to "Colin Churcher's Railway Pages" at http://www.railways.incanada.net/

* 1853 - The Great Western Railway opens its main line between Windsor and Niagara Falls. The Great Western went on to build, lease or buy other railways throughout Southern Ontario, and it can be claimed to be the first Canadian system.  The Galt Branch was opened on August 21st, 1854.

* 1856, August 11th - The Grand Trunk Railway opens its broad gauge line between Oshawa to Toronto.

* 1883, August 10th - First train reaches Calgary.

* 1886, August 13th - Sir John A MacDonald drives the last spike at mile 25, Cliffside, on the Esquimalt and Nanaimo  Railway on Vancouver Island.  The line became part of Canadian Pacific in 1905.

* 1900, August 15th - Regular service is commenced over the 3'0" gauge White Pass and Yukon Railway between Skagway, Alaska and Whitehorse, Yukon.

* 1909, August - Canadian Pacific completes the Kicking Horse grade relocation on the main line between Hector and Field, B.C. by substituting two spiral tunnels and lengthened line on a grade of 2.2% compensated, for the old "Big Hill" straight grade of 4.5%.

* 1907, August 29th - The south cantilever arm of the Quebec Bridge over the St. Lawrence collapsed killing 65 or more workmen.

* 1919, August 25th - a Canadian Pacific special train conveys the Prince of Wales from Montreal to Toronto returning to Montreal over the same route on 2 November 1919.  Locomotives 2225 and 2231 were used.  The Prince ran the locomotive from Flavelle to Trenton (20.9 miles) on the return trip.

* 1927, August 6th - The third Toronto Union Station is opened officially by Edward, Prince of Wales. It was opened to the public on August 11, but passengers had to walk across to the old station tracks. * 1929, August 26th - Canadian National Railways place in service, hauling the second section of the "International Limited" between Montreal and Toronto, the first road diesel electric passenger locomotive. This locomotive, no. 9000, consisted of two units, weighing a total of 335 tons.

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  It cooled off some yesterday for which we are grateful.  Gas is at $2.86 and all of the younger set is back in school (the K9 Korps is confused because of this).

Pete - Thanks for the additional information on the Duchess class locomotives.  I agree with your caption, "an elegant Irish carriage."  The N&W was the last bastion of steam around here, although the C&O did run steam as late as 1956, IIRC, when they dig out some H8s to operate on coal trains.  Oh, almost slipped my mind(?) stop snickering ladies and Boris.  Congrats on 2000th post.  Careful with that barrel!

DD1 - Glad material reached you.  No pictures rec'd here.

Allan stopped by - good to hear from you.

Eric - be careful!  You don't need PT is addition to everything else.  Answer to your question.  The D&H had some EMD power; Gp38-2s, GP39-2s, and SD45s.  Nice picture of the east approach to Hell Gate.

Dave - Good to hear from you.  Pet peeve of mine re hobby stuff (at least in N scale) is "limited run" materials which are "sold out" by the time the ads appear, and also manufacturers who never produce material which is "coming soon."  There's a special circle reserved for them.   Oh, almost forgot, publishers who make you preorder books.

Lars sent all kinds of UP/CNW materials.  I was just wondering since you were near P'Burgh.  Almost wound up working there.  Thanks for posting pictures of Pas and Sharks at Colonie.

Jan Olov - N&W pictures are all good.  There was also a lubritorium at Bluefield, WV.  It still stands although its used for care and feeding of diesels.  Link made some pictures there.  Williamson is still a busy place.  I remember riding the "Pocahontas" through there and rising early in the a.m. to get up in the dome car b4 breakfast in the diner.  Columbus, of course, is part of the N&Ws Ohio Extension - a speedway, especially for the A class locomotives.   Class J whistle, indeed - one of those sends cold chills up and down your spine - truly a "steamboat" whistle in the best sense of the word.  I was up close and personal with 611 more than a few times (on board and on the ground).  Know what you mean about different roads sneaking in through the door.  Ask away if you have questions - many of our colleagues (I know, Awk, it sounds better than "barflies") have a lot of knowledge about the roads you mentioned.

OSP stopped by with lots of offerings.  CN is always welcome.  The ARR pictures were enjoyable, but you know me, I zoned in on the pictures of the ARR centerflows.  Stooges and Road Runner?  Excellent!  SPF is short for "Slobbering Pennsy Freak."  Armadillo ate the bartab - Godfrey Daniel!  Well, last year, Frostbite devoured my Penguins tickets.

Work safe

Sunday night again! Time flies. Where is... oh, here it is.

After a real bad Saturday and not so good Sunday I am back even though the bar is closed. Yesterday we lost both cable TV and Internet for several hours and before that I managed to pull a muscle in my shoulder and was in pretty bad pain most of the day.

Tom –  Me baiting the Manager? No way, I would never try anything like that.Mischief [:-,]

The X2000 arrived in St. Louis June 18 and left June 20 at 8:05 AM to Springfield, IL. It was on display June 19 from 10 AM - 5 PM. 5,000 people came to see the train. June 18 we run a demo trip from St. Louis to Springfield, IL and back. Smile [:)]

The ICE train must have been in St. Louis in August or maybe in early September.

Thanks for the Alaska Rail pictures!Thumbs Up [tup] Was it just one Super Dome in that train? Sad to see that graffitti is a problem even in Alska. Grumpy [|(]

This week at the Emporium I’ll go there to see one of my favorite cartoons, Coyote & The Road Runner!Yeah!! [yeah] Love it! I’ll check the Stooges at the same time!

Pete –  Congratulations to the 2,000th Post!Bow [bow] How did you manage to do that?Question [?]

Nice to see pictures from Ireland!Thumbs Up [tup] Don’t see many from there. Is that steam locomotive ‘Jeep’ in regular service?Question [?]

A lot of older electric locomotives had pretty good size wheels.

Thanks for the link to the LMS Turbomotive 6202!Thumbs Up [tup] Interesting to see how they placed the turbine!

JanOlov –  A bunch of real nice steam locomotives!Thumbs Up [tup] Sad to see a streamliner being demoted to switching service! 2156 is indeed at the Museum of Transportation, St. Louis. We saw it during our 2nd Annual Rendezvous there last May.Smile [:)]

Cooking? I think I’ll pass! I’ll go to Cracker Barrel instead!Wink [;)]

Lars –  I never thought that you saw the X2000 and ICE at the same time (I mean the inside of them).Smile [:)]

Nice pictures, but I would say that picture #2 from the top shows at least 2 C&NW cars. The rest is very likely UP. Thumbs Up [tup]

Nice pictures of those D&H locomotives!Thumbs Up [tup] Didn't D&H have any EMD diesels? Question [?]

Dave –  I would like to know why you abandoned HO! Too small?Question [?]

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers waiting for the bar to open!

Rolled up ‘n slipped through the mail slot for the guys who just can't keep away!

First should apologize to Shane for not addressing his question about visits to the D&H. In a word, "nope." Haven't done any railroad-related activities since arriving ‘n none are planned. Sorry.

But, here's a photo of the current Plattsburgh Amtrak station - formerly D&H:

Class A 1213 is entering the Engine Service Building at Williamson in W.Va.

N&W class A 2-6-6-4 in Columbus....

Greetings Chief Tom and gentlemen....

First of all you have to excuse the noice coming from the kitchen and the mess there Chef [C=:-)]. I thought that I'd make you all a full English breakfast, to keep you going all day. You'll find everything that you need out there, eggs, sausages, bacon, beans etc....tea and coffee is hot and fresh as well. For those of you that want something else just pull the N&W Class J whistle Wink [;)]. While you wait, why don't you have a top up and a Cuban on me. Here's a few $ for the jukebox too.

Tom,

My fascination with Milwaukee Road? That's hard to say my friend why I like that little bit of underdog of the Pacific Northwest. I'd say that it has to do with their Hiawathas, rolling stock, locomotives, scenery (you got to love their trestles), well everything....Wink [;)]Laugh [(-D]

N&W was my "first love" of US railroads but it didn't take long before I added the D&H, LV, RDG, NYNH&H and WM to my empire. As you can see, I for some odd reason stayed on the east side of Mississippi River, and that it's mostly railroads with heavy coal traffic That was a few blue moons ago.

At that point I also started to hang out with one of my very best friends here in Sweden. When we met, he was one of the infidels Evil [}:)] that was eating and breathing Märklin and Swedish railways in both HO and full scale. That went on just fine, I was all the time trying to convert him to the one and only true belief Bow [bow] in railroading.....American! First I have to admit that it was a bit of hard work Banged Head [banghead] for me to get him to see clearly Blindfold [X-)] that he was on the wrong track.... After a while he started to go through some of my books, didn't that very many back then, and fell over a book called Erie Lackawanna Memories, and to make a long story short he's nowadays a fullfeathered Erie, Lackawanna and Erie-Lackawanna fanatic. Well, there's a few other roads on the sidetracks too....

Now he's converted another one of our mutual friends to D&RGW. Another that we know is a UP and AT&SF follower.

Anyhoo, after a while I ran across the Milwaukee Road and its Hiawathas, which had completely knocked off my feet. That lead me to buy books about this railroad (always looking for new ones) wanting to know more about it. I really love the scenery that they go through, it must be one of the most scenic in the whole country. Some of their trestles are just amazing to say the least. Now I'm just waiting to buy "The electric way across the mountains", some Morning Sun and other books about Milwaukee Road.

What do you know.....after a wee while the GN and NP sneaked in through the kitchen door. That has to do with scenery as well, which has turned me into a huge fan of mountain railroading, besides the loving the thoroughbreds that's running on the flat racetracks and heavy freight or coal/ore drags.

Most recently the SP poked me in my side for a bit of a attention as well. It's hard to ignore those Daylight limiteds, cabforwards and their coastline along the Pacific coast......yummy. Of course, they have their fair bit of mountain railroading too which is GOOOOOD.

To make a short story even shorter, you'll see my "empire" of favorite railroads here below. Even though that I love US railroads as a whole (before 1976 that is) these are the ones that I want to know more about. I'd say that I'm 90% steam and 10% electric and 1st and 2nd generation dieselfan.

Sorry for taking up your time for so long....

Yo gang, got my LA slang working todaySign - Welcome [#welcome] Tom, so true regarding S, heck Ho would be so easy to go back to, recently it was announced that a brass SP Mikado was in production at $2500 bucks apiece, even then it is incorrectly detailed for my era, better to donate that $2500 to the bar for various sundries!!! S is fine for those not attempting to depict the BNSF across Montana or UP across Kansas. Actually the more I research it, the Sacramento Northern would be a fine interurban canidate, oddly, steeple cab kits are available in S (well, to call them kits is perhaps over-reaching) and must admit that several have found their way to my doorstep, odd how that happens!!!

Lars: The real odd ball power of the business car fleet had to be the 10 SDP35's that were relunctly purchased for branchline passenger power, found ill suited for UP's needs, they were the first in and out of storage as business fluctations occured, after the E9's were disposed of, the SDP35/GP40X combo was common until sufficient quanities of 40x's began arriving on the property. An attempt was made to utilize the 35's in freight service, with equally dismal results, despite being the unloved step children, UP provided for complete overhauls before all 10 were towed dead in train for storage at Yermo Ca, where they remained until traded in or otherwise disposed by the mid eighties.

"Our" Place reborn! 3rd Year of adults 'n REAL Classic Trains in a special environment!
Posted by siberianmo on Saturday, August 25, 2007 6:19 PM

ENCORE! Saturday ‘n Photo Posting Day!

at "Our" Place!

We are CLOSED on SUNDAYs!

G'day Gents!

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative)

Pete (pwolfe) at 8:14 AM Saturday - Aug 25th: A rare EARLY Saturday appearance by the guy who doesn't enjoy reveille! <grin>  BUT see what it gotcha Question [?] YOU made the 2,000th Post! Wow!! [wow] Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]

Appreciate the fine Irish rail fotos from your Mate, Alan! Nice way to begin the day ‘round here! Thumbs Up [tup]

Perhaps you should "rent" your services - good movers are hard to find! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanx for taking the time ‘n making the effort to provide the fotos for one ‘n all! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Jan (JanOlov) at 9:16 AM Saturday - Aug 25th: Now THAT's the way to do it! Great spate of steamers, U.S. at that! One day maybe you'll explain the fascination with U.S. railroading and especially the Milwaukee Road.

Again, nicely done ‘n round appreciated! Thumbs Up [tup]

Lars (LoveDomes) at 1:06 PM Saturday - Aug 25th: For a guy who is on vacation, you surely have picked up the tempo with your contributions at the bar! Wow!! [wow]

Nice spate of UP material, which ALWAYS looks good. These ENCORE! Saturdays serve a purpose, for there's so many guys who've never been to the Original Thread, thereby missing out on soooooooo much material. Posting it here gives new life in a positive way! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

I think our "double whammy" got our Left Coast Connection's attention! See below. <grin>

Dave (West Coast S) at 3:31 PM Saturday - Aug 25th: Well, well - look what fell outtadatree! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] That'll teach ya to try ‘n sneak one in elsewhere! We are watching! <uh oh>

Hey! I fully comprehend your point. Just some times when I'm looking at who is logged in, I get chagrined at some of the cyber names from guys who are UTBs (used to be) - but it really becomes puzzling when I see a supportive guy, ‘n there's no visit. Anyway, you're forgiven - just as long as you've got the "coin" to support our bar habits! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

While we're not a hobby site - we do engage in the "talk." I finally ventured into S gauge with the construction of my S-Capades suspended from the ceiling layout. I ALWAYS loved the size of those trains ‘n would've preferred to have had my Can-Am layout in that scale. HOWEVER, as we both know, it's darned near impossible to find the road names, types of locos ‘n rolling stock to put together that which one has in mind. For me, I wanted VIA Rail passenger cars , RDCs ‘n locos (non-existent in S) - Amtrak passenger cars ‘n locos (very, very limited) - BC Rail RDCs (non-existent) and CN/CP locos. All readily available in HO AND representative of the period being modeled - 1990s to present time.

The kicker of course was ‘n remains price. I put out quite a bit of the retired fortune for that HO spread of mine. Had it been done in S - my guess is that I would've spent at least 3 times as much IF the stuff had have been available, and Lawd knows how much for custom "stuff."

So, I settled for a small layout with 3 trains to run. Lotsa switching, lotsafun - and it all looks ‘n runs great. MoPac ‘n Illinois Central for the 1950s era. Was really lucky to find two roads to "fit together" in a period modeled layout. Love it! Thumbs Up [tup]

Round always appreciated! Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete (pwolfe) at 5:02 PM Saturday - Aug 25th: Double duty on a Saturday at that! Wow!! [wow] You've been a busy guy this day . . .

And the Armadillo ate your bar tab!! Now I've heard pretty much everything! Don't think your ploy will work with our Manager, for he's got a "backup system" on the cash registers. Sorry, but both of ‘em - Cashinator ‘n Tilla have digital memories with printouts available on demand. <uh oh> Nice try - no cigar! <grin>

Good question regarding the ARR livery. Honestly don't know. However, I did note some differences even with the models. So perhaps what I captured in my fotos was indeed a spate of those differences - over the years. Doubt that ARR had any passenger vs. freight livery. Eagle Eye Pete strikes again! Thumbs Up [tup]

Return visit, chat, info ‘n round appreciated on this Saturday! Thumbs Up [tup]

Hi Tom and all.

Steady BORIS, bring the Hogshead of Bathams into the cellar, we will let it settle a while and it should be good for my free ale for the rest of the weekApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup] although I must admit to the end of the month does sound longerSmile [:)].

Back from helping in the movingThumbs Up [tup], so CINDY a pint from the old barrel of Bathams pleaseThumbs Up [tup].

RON I shall look forward to your Pennsy and LIRR photosYeah!! [yeah].

ALLAN Its great to have you backThumbs Up [tup]. Yes Tom and I managed to have a great time on the Amtrak trip, as we always doYeah!! [yeah], despite the really late running.

Glad you enjoyed the Rugby to Scotland trip and thanks for the kind wordsThumbs Up [tup]. I have done my ‘Named locomotives of the LNER' and I shall post it next week. It would be great if you could add some commentsThumbs Up [tup], me being from the mainly LMS part.

I think you should be getting some good cars in NZ with those MK IIs. To me those MKII first class compartments were the most comfortable, not counting Pullmans etc that ran in BR daysApprove [^].

ERIC Thanks for the link to SP&S #700.Thumbs Up [tup]

One turbine locomotive that was fairly successful was the LMS ‘Turbomotive' which ran regularly in the pre-war years between London and Liverpool. It was numbered in the Princess Royal class as 6202. After the war it was rebuilt with a Duchess boiler but with the smaller wheels of the Princess Royals. In the rebuilt form 6202 had sadly a very short career as the loco was wrecked in the Harrow & Wealdstone disaster of 1952 which claimed 112 lives on a foggy morning on the outskirts of London.

http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/LOCOLOCO/turbom/turbom.htm

Thanks for the photo of NSR EL1.They seem large wheels for an electric locomotive.

JAN Many thanks for those wonderful photos of those great steam locomotivesThumbs Up [tup]. I guess with the last Y6b being built in 1952 the class had nowhere near the years in service they should have had, before diesels took over.Sad [:(]

LARS Free beer for meThumbs Up [tup] so I get everyone else's, fair enough I supposeConfused [%-)]. I was going to tell you when you got back, but when I was giving TEX his brine treat my bar tab fell in it and he ate itShock [:O], so I guess we had better start from scratch with a new one.Whistling [:-^]Smile [:)]

Many thanks for those great UP car photo encoreApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. It reminded me of the photos I took when some of the cars were in Jeff city earlier this year. They were on a 35mm disc but I cannot get them into my photo albumBanged Head [banghead], I will try again when I post thisYeah!! [yeah].

DAVE Good to see you in the barApprove [^]. Thanks for the congrats.Thumbs Up [tup]

Like the UK Ireland did lose a lot of their lines in the 1950s and 60sSad [:(], although some lines were not ripped up as in the UK and there is a chance some may re-open as Ireland is spending a good deal of money on there rail system at the presentApprove [^], with new units and the are even quadrupling a line out of DublinThumbs Up [tup].

TOM We nearly had the 2,000th post on page 100,Wow!! [wow] many thanks for the free beer it is much appreciatedYeah!! [yeah], and the kind words even more so.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

That is interesting about someone wanting to buy that bit of track near where you are.

Really enjoying the Alaska trip photos,Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup] I do hope the folks at the bar enlarge themYeah!! [yeah]. That is a great pic of the locos through the domeWow!! [wow] and I noticed how clean the platform was at Fairbanks stationApprove [^]. I see two of the locos in the loco depot have a different livery, I wonder if this was an earlier version of the livery of the locos hauling the train or whether that is the freight livery for locomotivesQuestion [?].

Good Stooges films on the EmporiumThumbs Up [tup] to bring the Augustfest to a closeYeah!! [yeah]. I'm glad the review told who the Hoosier Hotshots were as I was about to ask, and Wiyle E. Coyote with the Roadrunner. BEEP BEEP indeed.

Good day all, Rounds for all.

Tom, I do deserver a thousand lashings for not stopping by, no excuse, matter of fact that OTHER forum touched on a sensitive subject of mine within the hobby, too much of the same being produced, sometimes can't ignore the call to vent , prime reason I abandoned HO (almost quit the scene altogether) in favor of S...

Great coverage of the Uncle Pete's business car fleet, ironic to think that in the early eighties UP disposed of all but one E9, all dome cars and a good percentage of the coach fleet only to see the folly of this business decision several years later which required a greater investement to replace what was once their's! Even the steam program was in doubt during this period.

Congrats Pete on the 2,000th post, that's a enormous amount of content compiled by the folks at "Our Place"  Good job with Irish Rail, I assumed most rails lines there were abandoned long ago, refreshing to be shown the ignorance of my ways.

Dave

ENCORE! Saturday ‘n Photo Posting Day!

at "Our" Place!

We are CLOSED on SUNDAYs!

Starting Sunday at the Mentor Village Emporium Theatre!

. . . August 26th thru September 1st:  THE THREE STOOGES DOUBLE FEATURE WEEK continues! Rockin' in the Rockies (1945) - and - Swing Parade of 1946 (1946). CARTOON: Wylie E. Coyote & The Road Runner - Zoom & Bored (1957).

Rockin' in the Rockies (1945)

PLOT SUMMARY:

While Rusty Williams is away at Agricultural College, his prospector cousin Shorty (Moe Howard) fills in at Rusty's struggling Reno NV spread as the ranch foreman. He spends his time looking for an angle at the Wagon Wheel Cafe Casino, and hooks up with two vagrants (Curly Howard, Larry Fine) after they accidentally win big at roulette. Along with two stranded New York singers and their money, the Stooges and the girls head for the ranch with prospecting plans. Rusty returns home with hope that investor Sam Clemens will save the ranch's cattle and mining operations, and finds Shorty and the gang's plans interfering. Complicating matters further, inept ranchhands (The Hoosier Hotshots) mistake Clemens for a cattle rustler, and Shorty, Curly & Larry cook up a scheme to get the girls an audition with a vacationing Broadway producer.

The Hoosier Hotshots were comedic musicians, but, unlike Spike Jones' orchestra, the HH's country-swing music never hit mainstream playlists and they are relatively unknown today. Strangely, Moe plays a non-Stooge character, with Larry and Curly interacting throughout most of the film as a comedy duo. Curly is relatively subdued in this film, at the start of his physical deterioration, and Larry takes on the bulk of their humorous antics and dialogue

<from: threestooges.net>

Swing Parade of 1946 (1946)

PLOT SUMMARY:

Danny Warren (Phil Regan) is determined to be a success in the nightclub business, despite the protests of his uptight businessman father (Russell Hicks). Danny's club manager Moose (Ed Brophy), and his stage crew (& part-time waiters) Moe, Larry & Curly, are ever-vigilant for process servers sent by Warren Sr. to shut down the club. Struggling singer Carol Lawrence (Gale Storm) is initially hired by Warren Sr. to serve a subpoena, but winds up hired as the nightclub's new talent find, and becomes Danny's new love interest. Mr. Warren Sr. reluctantly relents and attends the club's opening night, but the Stooges and Moose mistake him for a process server and throw him out onto the street. It's up to Marie Finch (Mary Treen), Daniel Sr.'s hopeful paramour, to smooth things over.

The Stooges rework several bits they performed with Ted Healy at MGM; the plumbing sequences are adapted from MEET THE BARON (1933), and some of the waiter scenes are borrowed from BEER AND PRETZELS (1933). Mary Treen ('Marie') later costarred with Joe Besser on 3 seasons of THE JOEY BISHOP SHOW (1962 - 1965).

This ends the Augustfest for The Three Stooges FEATURE Films!

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!

Cindy my sweet, a fine outfit you are almost wearing today! Wow!! [wow] So, let's see - I think a double JD on the rocks should be fine ‘n slide the snack tray down my way wudja please Question [?]

Boris, the crittAHs are lined up ‘n that can only mean feeding time at the bar! So, a tray of seeds for Awk - saucer of brine for Tex - bucket of ice cubes for Frostbite - a chew bone for Juneau ‘n take Artie outback for his ‘field mouse' <ugh> - yes, yes, the small jar of PPF is YOURS! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Some thunderstorms roared through last night, but nothing severe for us. Lightning on the lake . . . awesome sights. More today ‘n through tomorrow. Clearing up after that. Temperatures higher than when we arrived, but not bad considering the time of year.

Looks like a Tuesday departure for us, with Wednesday as the alternate date.

For Pete: So YOU made the 2,000th post at the bAH! Awwwwwwwright, drinks on PETE! Yeah!! [yeah] Why not Question [?] Da Boss is springing for YOURS, you at least can spring for OURS! <sounds right to me!> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Some interesting shots from the Emerald Isle . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

Good show with the Book Relay!! Thumbs Up [tup]

For Eric: Say WHAT Question [?] No, I didn't say that I saw both of those trains at the same time. I said I saw ‘em at Penn Station, but didn't recall the dates. I figured the dates of your pix probably were close enuf! <geesh> I think maybe you're looking for something that isn't there. Hmmmmmmmm.

Nice link on the SP&S 700. Thumbs Up [tup]

For Allan: Looks like you're up ‘n runnin' again! Thumbs Up [tup] Cheers, mate - have one on me!

For Ron: Yes, the NYC ‘n NYNH&H electrics came thru! Thumbs Up [tup] NYC is #1 for me, followed by the B&O, PRR, NH . . . Have family ties to the B&O, but the NYC always was my favorite. Thumbs Up [tup]

For Shane: It wasn't easy getting those buses out . . . <grin> Glad you enjoyed the covers! Thumbs Up [tup]

For Da Boss: Were you wound tight or what Question [?] Hope I didn't start all of that with my rant. <oooooooops> Just sometimes really ticks me off to have to go through this over ‘n over ‘n over. You'd think by now those who display the repetitive "ignorance attacks" would learn. <geesh>

West Coast S was seen on the Forums but not here, you say Question [?] Now what's THAT all about Question [?] Back when we had an active Order of the Stools, wasn't he one of the "permanent" members Question [?] Hey! No problem visiting any of the threads, but you'd think ANYONE who thinks of themselves as "one of us," would surely spend a bit of time HERE too! Strange, but we've seen it from others . . .

Love the Alaska pix! Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Liked the CN ad with the drum heads too. Seems that CP must've had the "lock" on the named trains. For some reason, I always think of CP as the "premier" hauler of passengers on the rails in days gone by. Thumbs Up [tup]

Book Relay looks like it's off to a good start - I've counted FOUR so far with YOU, Shane, Eric ‘n me! Thumbs Up [tup]

Regarding the guy who stopped by, I read somewhere that he's 13 (maybe 14 by now) - so simply ignoring those kind of posts is the way to go. There are plenty of places for his kind of participation. You are right, let's stick to the way we do things here. YOU determine who is "in" and we'll take it from there. It's worked well in all situations except ONE . . . . well, maybe TWO. <uh oh>

To wind down my day, here's an Encore from a bit ago. April 2, 2006 on page 291 of the old thread . . .

Ok - time for my humble submission:

Union Pacific: Lounge area in dome car (from www.trainweb.org)

Greetings Tom and all,

I take that it's on with party hats then?

Steam locomotive steak for everybody and the house best "water" Wink [;)]Dinner [dinner]

And some photos too, of course then.....my first love when it come to railroads back in the day.....Laugh [(-D]

Class Y-6b 2-8-8-2 #2132, NB, Shenandoah, VA 12/16/1956. This is now on the I-81 corridor of NS and in the late 1950s the through freights and coal jobs went to the class Y-6b.

By 1959 leased ACL E-units had bumped the Js from the passenger jobs and this was the result. Here the 610 switches the Grey Lumber industry track in Waverly on 3/7/1959.

Class J 4-8-4 #611 with the early morning Roanoke train at Norfolk Union Station circa 1957. Both the Virginian and the original Norfolk Southern used this station, though by the 50s the NS was long gone. Today the station is gone and the real estate totally given over to the I-264 bridge network as it splits to Portsmouth, Water Street, and Tideater Drive.

Class A 2-6-6-4 #1218 by MP 71 hustling hoppers of export coal east to Lamberts Point in 1957.

Class Y3 2-8-8-2 #2043, Portlock Yard, South Norfolk, 3/3/1957. The older Y class power had by the late 1950s been relegated to switching the Lamberts Point docks and support yards like Portlock.

2043, the same day and place.

2120 was the first Y6 in 1936. When built, they were equipped with cast steel beds and roller bearings.

2156 is the only survivor of the Y6a class of 1942. You can see this locomotive in the St Louis Museum of Transportation, MO. The 1942 batch were designated class Y6a.

2171 takes pride of place in the sunshine for the offical company portrait, the first class Y6b in 1948.

2175 was built 1948 at Roanoke. Here she is in the lubritorium at Shaffer's Crossing locomotive servicing facility. If you take a close look, you will see the large square ducting in the roof of the shed, designed to catch the smoke and soot.

A great view of 2175 taken from the top of the coal tower at Shaffer's Crossing engine facility, Roanoke.

An excellent image of 2176 on the turntable at Shaffer's Crossing roundhouse. Shows good overhead detail. In the background can be seen a J class 4-8-4 tender.

A front view taken on 15 July 1949 when built. The distinctive shape of the smoke box door was later changed to the more familiar round style.

Image of 2197's right side when built new.

And her left side as well.

2200 was the last of the Y6b built in 1952. This photo was originally of 2197, but retouched to represent the last of the breed

HI Tom and all.

A cup of coffee and a bacon sarnie please CINDY.

A bit of a rushed post, I am going to help a friend move house in a short while. I have read the posts from RON, ALLAN AND ERIC and I will reply to them later if I may.

This weeks photos from Alan are from Ireland from May this year.

At Ballybrophy on the trip back from Limerick, hauled by the diesels shown. With the rather distnctive gates that are in seen around this part of Ireland.

A former pub in Ballybrophy.

At Mullingar showing the Athlone platforms.this is a frieght only line now.

Mullingar is the junction for the line to Sligo. 'Jeep' 2-6-4T has brought the train in from Dublin and the two diesels will take the train to Sligo.

An rather elegant  Irish carriage.

These should enlarge.

Just seen your post TOM. I hope to back in later.

Pete.

You surely don't have to "qualify" your feelings as far as I'm concerned. Be yourself ‘round here, or be gone! How's that?? Of course, there's a CAVEAT - if one cannot find it within themselves to follow the house rules (Page One of this Thread) - then don't let the door hit ya in the keester! <grin>

And while I'm "at it," there are always going to be those who simply march to their own drum. They KNOW we're interactive, but they refuse to be. They KNOW we don't appreciate hit ‘n run Posts, but they do it anyway. They present the allusion of being supportive, but break away at every opportunity. So as MY saying goes, screw ‘em all but six ‘n save those for pallbearers! Yeah!! [yeah]

We're a far better bar with a small group of people who contribute QUALITY than a larger one with QUANTITY being the only objective. <barf> SoapBox [soapbox] Banged Head [banghead]

Super fine SP&S material in the form of book ‘n video covers ‘n signs . . . Yeah!! [yeah]

Visit from "upstate" ‘n rounds appreciated! Thumbs Up [tup]

Ahhhhhhhhh, now I get it regarding the "buses," etc. Thanx!

BTW, I am considered to be a qualified SPF by some of my fellow NYC devotees.

From the Acronym Finder: can mean:

Sun Protection Factor - Singapore Police Force - Single Point Failure - Signal Processing Facility - Swiss Peace Foundation, etc. . . So ???????? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Quarters, round, visit ‘n chat ALWAYS looked forward to! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good morning Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Leon, Friday night or Saturday morning, depending on how you count. It's time for a real good, juicy Filet Mignon with mushrooms!

Another busy day today. I learned what I am supposed to eat to stay healthy. I went direct from that class to Cracker Barrel and had a Sugar Cured Ham Sandwich. Good stuff.

JanOlov –  Missed the close up pictures of the Class Dm3.Thumbs Up [tup] Very powerful locomotive!

Tom –  Gas down to $2.46 (rounded)! Temp was 109° for the third day in row. We are now waiting for rain from hurricane Dean coming this way during the weekend.Smile [:)]

Thanks for the operating years of SP&S!Thumbs Up [tup] I just found out that they became a part of Burlington Northern 1970!

The picture of the X2000 and the ICE at Penn Station shows the only time those two trains were at the same platform. Amtrak tried to avoid to run them at the same time, but August 11, 1993 it happened. X2000 was running in revenue service and the ICE was on a demo trip from Washington to New York City and back.Smile [:)]

Pete’s book looks interesting. Reminds me about how close it was I was sent to British Rail in the late 80’s. Count me in, I’ll send you an email later today.

East or West, we’ll show you Canada’s Best! I noiced that “your” train is included in that old ad, the Ocean Limited! Did you see that drumhead on your trip?Question [?]

Lars –  To be honest, I am kind of surprised too abot the Diamondbacks being in 1st place! Not that many more weeks to play, so maybe they will make it to the playoff!

My photo was taken Aug 11, 1993. But no train was on display that day. And I didn't see you there!!!Wink [;)]

Interesting books about SP&S!Thumbs Up [tup] I spent a number of days in Spokane in 1984 but never saw any trains. The last one is a DVD about SP&S #700, a 4-8-4built 1938. It’s an oil burner and is still operational today as far as I know. See link.

http://www.sps700.org/

CM3 –  Interesting history of the Red Buses!Thumbs Up [tup] They look like some old type of buses in or around Switzerland that I have seen in pictures from long ago.Smile [:)]

Pete –  The BA&P electrification was the first DC high voltage electrification of a railroad.

Thanks for the link to the Beyer - Ljungström turbine locomotive!Thumbs Up [tup] As most turbine locomotives it was not a success.

Ron –  No, no pictures.Grumpy [|(] This forum is kind of strange, strange things happens or nothing at all happens. Sometimes it is like playing the lottery.Grumpy [|(]

Allan –  I tried the link but did not manage to find any NZ electrics tonight. I’ll try again tomorrow! Thanks!Thumbs Up [tup]

How many hours difference is it between the US and NZ?Question [?]

Norwegian State Railways, Electric locomotive Class EL1. Built 1922. 940 hp.

Latest NZ railways news: Toll is re-equiping it`s main passenger trains with BR Mk2 coaching stock over the next year, The Overlander, The TranzSenic and The TranzAlpine, the old coaches were from the 1930`s, upgraded at times of course. While in Auckland saw a couple of "push pull" passenger trains on metro rail services, they are in the process of double tracking the main metro lines, a big job!  Wellington Metro rail has been given NZ$500m by the NZ government to upgrade the rail system, must want all those Public Servants to arrive at work on time!Whistling [:-^]

Tom and Eric, see we were on the site at the same spot on the clock.Bow [bow]

See ya,  Allan

In Arkansas it's hot n' humid. we have a slight drought, but the trains keep on comin'. Saw a SD45P(leasing and w/o steam genarator), been seeing a ton of those new KCS Southern Belle Scheme C. hoppers.
An old Fordyce & Princton steam engine(2-8-0, close to it) got moved to Fordyce, where it will be restored, only cosmetically >:-O-<--<... <- this guy wants it to run, ( I think he overacting, don't you?)

Howdy Tom and all at the bar. Drinks for all and a quicky for me, as I can't stay long. I just wanted to tell CM3 that I got the DD-1 material in the mail and thank you. It has all the information I was seeking.

All: The weather is still hot and is projected for many more days. Thank God for air conditioning. I try to work in my shop, but one hour is about all I can take, despite the A/C in the shop.

I posted a bunch of pictures, but they haven't appeared yet?? I hope I'm doing it right.

Tom: Sorry about the NYCentral thing. I too am a Pennsy fan and LIRR also. I may flood the site with photos tomorrow. Hope you haven't already seen them. Did you get the info on the shovel noses? Since I didn't see my post on this site, I'm not sure.

Lars: I'm also a fan of the NYCentral and NYNH&HRR. Having been brought up in NY, I can appreciate all the railroads that serve the NY area. I hope you got to see the photos of the NYC and NYNH&H electrics I posted.

Jan: Thanks for the pictures of the snow. It helps to cool things down around here. Beautiful scenery too.

Hi Tom and all.

A pint of Bathams please RUTHThumbs Up [tup], I will have to write this between the Thundershowers we are getting here nowThumbs Down [tdn], although we need the rainYeah!! [yeah].

MIKE Thanks for linksThumbs Up [tup]. I see there is an article in the latest Train magazine on Alfred Perlman's time on the Western Pacific. The Hiawatha is an interesting locomotiveYeah!! [yeah].

ALLAN Sorry you are having trouble with the computer,Sad [:(] it is good to see you in the barApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

ROB Good to see you in.Thumbs Up [tup] I hope you are able to spend some more time with us here, in as you say, the ‘Finest Pub in the ether.Approve [^]

JAN Many thanks for the great photos.Thumbs Up [tup] It is a very scenic part of the worldYeah!! [yeah]. It is good have they incorporated the Power Stations into the Railway Stations and they are still very attractive buildingsApprove [^].

Great close ups of the DM3 electric.Yeah!! [yeah] That is an interesting wheel design on the locomotive.

ERIC Looking at the link to the turbine locomotives struck a cord in the memory. There was a Beyer- Ljungstrom turbine locomotive tried out by the LMS in the 1920s I have a link to it.

http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/LOCOLOCO/ljung/ljungstr.htm

Thanks for the info on the electric locomotive in Ron's photoThumbs Up [tup], I wonder if the 2,400V DC system was used much, it seems a high voltage for DC to me. I believe the highest DC voltage used in the UK was 1,500V DC.

I can remember the Jubilee class locomotives, like Leander, working through Rugby.Approve [^] There were a few of them allocated to Bushbury (Wolverhampton) loco depot and they worked expresses to London. These locos were usually in a very clean conditionApprove [^] and they made a fine sightThumbs Up [tup]. There were some Jubilee class locos shedded at Rugby in the 1960s.

LARS Glad you are in the book relayThumbs Up [tup],

You can be assured of my good behavior at the bar over the weekendAngel [angel]. HELGA has had a word and told me to be on my best behavior. I will do this, as I don't want to happen to me that what happened to the Grizzly that got too near the fish boxes a while backShock [:O]. The sight of the bear heading back to the Can-Am gorge at full speed with HELGA yelling "Come back and wrestle some more" is a sight not forgotten easily"Yeah!! [yeah]Big Smile [:D]

Many thanks for the video and book coversThumbs Up [tup]. I bet the Pacific Northwest Railroads is a great photo book.Yeah!! [yeah]

CM3 Glad the e-mail is now OKThumbs Up [tup].

I'm afraid I was not too clear on the Duchess's. There are 3 preserved. The one in the photo is (4) 6233 Duchess of Sutherland. The one having the streamline casing fitted is 46229 Duchess of Hamilton, which masqueraded as 6220 Coronation on the tour of North America in 1939. The 3rd one is 46235 City Of Birmingham, which is in a museum in Birmingham. This loco was withdrawn from service and was repainted at Crewe Works and donated to the city. The other two Duchesses' are lucky to survive as they were bought and put on display at two of Sir Billy Butlin's Holiday Camps. 46229 is owned by the NRM and 6233 by after a spell at Bressingham in Norfolk, the loco is now run by the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust .

Leanders wheels are 6'9" the same as the Duchesses, it seems a favorite size for the LMS express passenger locomotives.

TOM I was confused about what the Transport Liaison wasConfused [%-)]. I though it was a group who met with UP and Amtrak to solve problems. Many thanks for giving me to infoThumbs Up [tup].

As you say, if they provide convenient trains and run them to time people will ride themYeah!! [yeah]. If I recall right, there was an advert at the station in Jeff City about a 2 for1 offer on the line in Missouri, but honestly until the service is a lot more reliable the offer is probably doing more damage than good. People, who don't use the train, take up the offer, arrive back very late vowing never to use the train again.Thumbs Down [tdn]

I the UK now the trains are very popular again I hear a lot of the companies are hiking up the fares increases above inflationBanged Head [banghead]Thumbs Down [tdn], perhaps DL, when he is back, can let us know more about thisYeah!! [yeah]

Many thanks for the Canadian National Nostalgia ad and Drumheads Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

I had better get this off as it looks like another T-storm heading this way, so a round please LEON and I,ll have the Steak and Fries please.

Pete.

G'day Gents!

Time for another Blast from the Past!

PASSENGER TRAIN NOSTALGIA #53

<A form of this was initially Posted on Page 210 of the Original Thread>

Here's something to enjoy regarding the Canadian National Railways (CNR) from a 1949 advertisement in my personal collection.

one of Canada's 10 most popular VACATIONS

ENJOY the best that Canada offers. Play in the mountain-and-sea setting of the glorious West Coast (Vancouver harbor) or see the sights of her Eastern Cities: Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec, Halifax . . . You go in comfort by Canadian National, the railway to everywhere in Canada.

"East or West, we'll show you
CANADA's BEST!"

EXPLORE the snug harbors, the historic towns, the "picture places" of Canada's Maritime Provinces (Lunenburg, Nova Scotia). The Ocean Limited, the International Limited and other Canadian National "name trains give easy access to all Eastern Canada.

BE THE GUEST of the largest railway system in North America . . . traveling happy-go-lazy to choice vacation areas . . . stopping at Canadian National resorts and big city hotels of distinction. To California and anywhere West, to New York and anywhere East, go Canadian National. "We'll tell you where and take you there!"

CANADIAN NATIONAL

THE RAILWAY TO EVERYWHERE IN CANADA!

 * * * * *     * * * * *     * * * * *     * * * * *     * * *  * *

Some drumheads of the CNR!

Enjoy! Thumbs Up [tup]
