Good Morning make that Evening everybody at the bar!
Cindy, please a cup of strong coffee and a plate of ham and eggs for me and a round for everybody. Leon, a large dark beer please, any kind will do, after all these problems getting in here, I need something to quench that thirst! It was not easy getting in here this morning, and I thought it was just me thumbing with the keys but I hear Jan had the same problem.
It's been one of those weeks and weekends! I started on my list of not so favorable things and people. Two Congress men, Rep. Sarbanes and Rep. Oxley ended up on the top (they sure cause a lot of work!) and then, of course, computers came second. I decided to change the motherboard in my PC to something a bit faster. In short, it didn't work and the old board didn't work as it came back in. I'm writing this at work on Sunday and will drop it off on my way to work on Monday morning.
Enough complaining. Being gone a week sure gives me a lot to read through, so I will try to make a quick summary and comment on just a few things in the happenings at the bar during the week.
Tom, I see Kalmbach through you a loop last weekend, but you got a free preview to one of their sites, what did you look at? Thank you for the free rounds during the week, unfortunately I couldn't use that much of it.
I read your trip report to Dallas. You were lucky to have such a prominent host who could get you a cab ride on the TRE. Unfortunately, your picture site now requires a password, but I enjoyed the pics you had in your post. I did ride the McKinney trolleys during a conference here in town. It was a great beer party all the way up and down McKinney Ave!
I really like your Alaska pictures! I had two sets to look at today, and they are all great!
That was some very fine articles on the Turbo Train. Thank you very much. It was really interesting to see the history and the operation of that train. I just wish I had paid a little bit more attention to it when I first came here, maybe then I could have been on one. Amtrak had one relic in traffic between NY and Hartford in the early 80's, I wonder what that was. No, it wasn't the Turbo, but some other "one-of-a-kind" train that was used as a car maybe behind an RDC. Does anyone know what I'm rambling about here?
Interesting summary of the NP as well. I wonder about the ration between passenger cars and freight cars. NP has approximately 1 in 100 according to your figures. Was this an average figure for the major roads, or how much did it differ from company to company?
And then you had a great story on the San Diego Trolley. I guess Herb Albert would have called it the "Tijuana Trolley" if he had still been around. When I saw how it has been expanded over the years, I understand why I see it in more and more places in San Diego every time I get down there. 100,900 riders on a weekday seems to be a lot of riders! It's almost like all inhabitants of my Tustin would ride with it daily! Do you have any feel for how that compares with other light rail systems? I know you said somewhere in an earlier post that light rail systems will not get enough riders to pay for themselves. I wonder what the costs are if 100,000 riders aren't enough.
As for the movie program, I think I saw Secondhand Lions once. Wasn't that the movie where the two old guys finally opened their wallets and bought a yacht and "parked" it in a pond on their land? From this week's program I think I will try to catch The Shadow Riders.
The "Press 1 for English" has me up in arms as well. Last week I saw the ABC TV channel with bad weather warnings in both English and Spanish!
Let me guess the USCG picture: is it from San Diego? I base my guess on the hills, they look kind of familiar and so does one of the hotels on the mainland.
Hills, yes they are ablaze out there. One of the fires is only 6 miles from my house, but luckily the wind shifted around 1AM so I think we can call it clear for now. I'm getting constant updates from my wife, but she sounds much calmer now than what she did last night.
Trolleyboy Rob, Welcome back! I remember you from my previous stint here at the bar. I hope to see more of your pictures and hear more of your tales. Byt the way, where are those "Reaper Express" pictures taken?
Jan, no I don't remember those tent outings in the military. I slept in a cave all the time. Well, it was really a very big hole in the mountain, with all the amenities you could wish for, except a window.
I liked the pictures of the Swedish MU's (or what they are called). They bring back memories from my childhood. I spent a couple of summers on the west coast, and the "Skandiapilen", an X8 (or Xo8 as they were called back then), came by every day. I also remember riding in a Yo1 a couple of times before the Y8 came (on the "Vodka" line past Horna). Those old rail buses were noisy! And the shook and rattled the whole trip. Did they have a "regular" transmission with a stick shift on the floor? I think I remember something like that, but I could be oh so wrong. The Y8 came in a version with a small first class compartment as well.
Wasn't there another set that looked almost like the X7, maybe the X6? I remember something like that from Malmö in my early days. Both the X6(?) and the X7 were used in commuter service, but in different parts of the country.
Next time you feel like your arms are just hanging useless straight down you need to get one of those super-geeky head gears with room for two cans and built-in straws! That will do for a nice conversation piece here at the bar!
Nice article on the Hiawathas! I had always though to "The Hiawatha" as just one train, but here you show five different trains. Oh, what we learn at "Our Place"! 100 mph for the steam engines must be a very impressive speed! That tells me that the top speed was higher at many times. I see the ventilation openings in the front. Those were there on the F diesels as well, weren't they, but by then they were just painted on.

Eric, It's amazing that all damage from the moose collision was just a crack in the plastic! Pretty sturdy stuff!
Don't make the trip to SoCal just for the Fullerton days, it may not be worth it. But there is always the San Diego museums and the trolley, the Campo museum, the Poway museum, Travel Town in LA, LA Live Steamers, the LA County Fairgrounds with the DD-40 and the Big Boy, a new trolley line in San Pedro, the LA Light Rail, and probably a few more things that I have forgotten right now. Oh yes, OERM! So there is always something to look at over there.

Were the lollipops moved from one end to another when the engine changed direction, or were they a permanent A-end indication?

The figures on locomotive production are just unbelievable! That's an awful lot of locomotives in a 120 year timeframe.
I saw that CM3 has already confirmed what I suspected: that the Hetch Hetchy Railroad was built for the construction of the Hetch Hetchy Dam. There was a lot of ruckus about that dam some years back. I'm not sure if they destroyed it, or not, but it was close.

Jan-have you any speacial requests now that you are a regular as to what streetcars you would like presented to you? Now I've never lived south of the boarder in the US nor have I been out to Washington State so my choice for most scenic US streetcar line would be limited to the ones I know off.For my buck I'd have to say the Great Gorge route would have been the most scenic. It actually ran in both countries along the Niagara gorge below Niagara falls. It was for most of it's life strictly a tourist trap certainly the US portion. the Canadain side was mostly a tourist rtap but it did serve as transportation for a couple of the villages along the river conecting them to Niagara Falls and St Catharines before the highway system was expanded.Anyhow I'm off "fer" now. I'll leave a CDN $5o Should cover the drinks for the day

Love the pix of those cutters. And nope, I've no clue where that particular one was taken. Left coast fer sure, but where? Don't know! I'm pretty much an east coast sailor, although when in the Navy ‘n a few times as a "merchie," did pull into left coast ports. Come to think of it, that could be either the Long Beach-Los Angeles port OR maybe even San Francisco-Oakland. Hmmmmmmm. Can't narrow it down further than that . . .

Well good evening folks. have to say I almost feel railroaded As passed back in forth with email to Tom I guess "I is back" to use a "Borisism"I see that Tom and Lars have both used trolley type posts the last couple of days to flush me out of the woodwork,seems like it worked that or the silk wrapped stone that one of Vito's boyz tossed through the bedroom window the other nightI actually just got back in from a night at our museum first of our two halloween night shows,we actully got a second PCC refurbished and runnin in less than a month to help handle the crowd an amazing feat even for our museum's workforce.
Tom-Nice to see that shot from our first rendezvous , hard to imagine it was almost two years ago.Nice to see the Octoberfest tradition stills happening round here,it was almost "nice" to see Helga and Hilda in thier finest duds then Boris went by with his new leather lederhosen that Helga bought hime much to much not left to the imagination if you get my meaning I was able to actually atend this years Kitchener Waterloo Octoberfest last week ( much suds were had by all )

Yes I do remember the North Briton train running, but if I remember it did`nt run for all that long , wonder if this was due to Dr Beeching`s cuts? Saw England loose to the Boks 15-6 this morning, anyway they did great to reach the final, the AB`s were SUPPOSED to bring the CUP back to NZ! Have a nice trip over the weekend mate.

Unlike the diesel-powered Zephyrs, the Hiawatha trains were pulled by steam locomotives, though the trains were by no means slow. In fact, these locomotives (Milwaukee classes A and F7) were some of the fastest steam engines ever built, with schedule times on some routes requiring speeds of well over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). The B&O Stratadome is an interesting one as it still has the lights. They used to illuminate the passing scenery at night. Check out the trucks - the trucks on those cars were adapted tom operate in conditions of tight clearances en rote which is why they look a little different than what we're used to seeing.The Sawx are still alive. The short opens with Prof. J. O. Dunkfeather telling a reporter how he solved a mysterious case. The scene fades to the Stooges, who are three door-to-door peddlers trying to sell their "Miracle Reducing Machine." After several rejections and walking for miles, they come across the home of Mr. Graves, a mad scientist who has invented a new death ray ("It'll kill millions!"). Mr. Graves mistakes the Stooges for his new caretakers, and he leaves them to guard his home while he is in Washington. Three spies are out to steal Mr. Graves' plans, disguise themselves in Halloween costumes to scare the Stooges away, but some unseen hand keeps hurling pies at them. Great pics none the less !The Hiawathas were named passenger trains operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (also known as the Milwaukee Road), and traveled from Chicago to the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The first Hiawatha trains ran in 1935. By 1947, there were five routes carrying the Hiawatha name:The Twin Cities Hiawatha - the main line route From Chicago, Milwaukee to St. Paul and Minneapolis; The North Woods Hiawatha - a spur route off the Chicago-Minnesota main line leading from New Lisbon, Wisconsin to Minocqua, Wisconsin The Chippewa-Hiawatha - connected Chicago to Ontonagon in Michigan's Upper Peninsula via Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Midwest Hiawatha - utilized the Milwaukee Road's mainline across Illinois and Iowa to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Omaha, Nebraska (the train split into two parts in Manilla, Iowa). The Olympian Hiawatha - which traversed the Milwaukee mainline from Chicago-Twin Cities-Seattle/Tacoma. The Hiawatha innaugurated service between Chicago and the Twin Cities on May 29, 1935, on a regular 6 hour schedule covering 410 miles (660 km). The first Milwaukee Road Hiawathas were streamlined lightweight trains designed to meet competition from the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad's (Burlington Route) Zephyrs and Chicago & Northwestern's '400. Unlike the diesel-powered Zephyrs, the Hiawatha trains were pulled by steam locomotives, though the trains were by no means slow. In fact, these locomotives (Milwaukee classes A and F7) were some of the fastest steam engines ever built, with schedule times on some routes requiring speeds of well over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Some believe that these trains, styled by Otto Kuhler, may have broken the official steam locomotive speed record set by the Mallard, as the trains were said to exceed 120 miles per hour (193 km/h) on a regular basis; but there is no actual evidence of this happening (mainly because the speed was illegal in America then.)Like the Burlington Zephyr and Union Pacific's City of Salina spectators regularly lined the tracks to watch the streamlined Hiawathas and the Milwaukee Road train quickly became an icon of streamlining. PRSL is a good pick - look at the honking big Baldwin pulling the passenger train. The CNJ book is on my "look at" list when I head to the frozen north (and the train show) next month. NYC Pentrex - got it; also have the other one as well, although on separate DVDs. The Vintage Santa Fe Diesels is one of the best out there, IMHO. Nice dome pictures. The B&O Stratadome is an interesting one as it still has the lights. They used to illuminate the passing scenery at night. Check out the trucks - the trucks on those cars were adapted tom operate in conditions of tight clearances en rote which is why they look a little different than what we're used to seeing.The Sawx are still alive. The first Hiawatha trains ran in 1935. By 1947, there were five routes carrying the Hiawatha name:The Twin Cities Hiawatha - the main line route From Chicago, Milwaukee to St. Paul and Minneapolis; The North Woods Hiawatha - a spur route off the Chicago-Minnesota main line leading from New Lisbon, Wisconsin to Minocqua, Wisconsin The Chippewa-Hiawatha - connected Chicago to Ontonagon in Michigan's Upper Peninsula via Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Unlike the diesel-powered Zephyrs, the Hiawatha trains were pulled by steam locomotives, though the trains were by no means slow. In fact, these locomotives (Milwaukee classes A and F7) were some of the fastest steam engines ever built, with schedule times on some routes requiring speeds of well over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Some believe that these trains, styled by Otto Kuhler, may have broken the official steam locomotive speed record set by the Mallard, as the trains were said to exceed 120 miles per hour (193 km/h) on a regular basis; but there is no actual evidence of this happening (mainly because the speed was illegal in America then.)Like the Burlington Zephyr and Union Pacific's City of Salina spectators regularly lined the tracks to watch the streamlined Hiawathas and the Milwaukee Road train quickly became an icon of streamlining. Where you'll teach us to be aggressive and defiant towards the other teams.... Should we ever find ourselfs in an unmanageable situation, you hope that we'll have listened well enough to find the easy way out of our dilemma...

The Hiawathas were named passenger trains operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (also known as the Milwaukee Road), and traveled from Chicago to the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The first Hiawatha trains ran in 1935. By 1947, there were five routes carrying the Hiawatha name:
The Hiawatha innaugurated service between Chicago and the Twin Cities on May 29, 1935, on a regular 6 hour schedule covering 410 miles (660 km). The first Milwaukee Road Hiawathas were streamlined lightweight trains designed to meet competition from the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad's (Burlington Route) Zephyrs and Chicago & Northwestern's '400. Unlike the diesel-powered Zephyrs, the Hiawatha trains were pulled by steam locomotives, though the trains were by no means slow. In fact, these locomotives (Milwaukee classes A and F7) were some of the fastest steam engines ever built, with schedule times on some routes requiring speeds of well over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Some believe that these trains, styled by Otto Kuhler, may have broken the official steam locomotive speed record set by the Mallard, as the trains were said to exceed 120 miles per hour (193 km/h) on a regular basis; but there is no actual evidence of this happening (mainly because the speed was illegal in America then.)
Like the Burlington Zephyr and Union Pacific's City of Salina spectators regularly lined the tracks to watch the streamlined Hiawathas and the Milwaukee Road train quickly became an icon of streamlining. The Twin Cities Hiawatha ran twice daily in each direction, with morning and afternoon trains. Unlike the competition, the Hiawatha train was not articulated and could be changed in length, depending on service needed. It competed in the hot Chicago-Twin Cities market with the Chicago & Northwestern '400, and Burlington's Twin Cities Zephyr.
Due to its great economic success, in 1936-37 the Milwaukee Road completely re-equipped the original Hiawathas with a new Hiawatha based roughly on the 1935 design. In 1938, the train was re-equipped again with the rib-sided 1938 Hiawatha with its famous finned beaver-tail observation car was designed by noted industrial designer Otto Kuhler.
With the delivery of the 1938 trainsets, the original 1935 Hiawatha equipment was reassigned to the Chicago to Omaha/Sioux City route where it ran as the Midwest Hiawatha. Another train, The Northwoods Hiawatha, ran with older cars from earlier series also.

The San Diego Trolley is a trolley-style light rail system operating in the metropolitan area of San Diego, California. The operator, San Diego Trolley, Inc. (SDTI) is a subsidiary of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS). The Trolley began revenue service on July 26, 1981, making it the first modern light-rail system in California. It is the fifth most-ridden light rail system in the United States.
The Trolley initially used the same German-built Siemens-Duewag U2 vehicles as Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta, Canada as well as Frankfurt, Germany. The system has since been expanded to include the SD-100 and Avanto S70 vehicles manufactured by Siemens.

Lars stopped by with all kinds of stuff. Tobin Rote is, of course, correct. There was also a "Furnace Face" in the NFL - so back to the books. The hockey reference is dead on target.
The bookmobile is out front. PRSL is a good pick - look at the honking big Baldwin pulling the passenger train. The CNJ book is on my "look at" list when I head to the frozen north (and the train show) next month. NYC Pentrex - got it; also have the other one as well, although on separate DVDs. The Vintage Santa Fe Diesels is one of the best out there, IMHO.
Nice dome pictures. The B&O Stratadome is an interesting one as it still has the lights. They used to illuminate the passing scenery at night. Check out the trucks - the trucks on those cars were adapted tom operate in conditions of tight clearances en rote which is why they look a little different than what we're used to seeing.
The Sawx are still alive. Interesting game last night; especially the sidebar game within a game. Jeez, I'm gonna charge the mound when the other guy has consistently been throwing 96-97 AND is holding a baseball? Not tonight, Mildred! Torre goes west (remember you heard it here first), but it may not happen for awhile. To paraphrase the Don, "They made him an offer he could refuse."
DD1 - Glad you have the shiny side up! We used to deal with that stuff all the time when I lived in Tennessee - can't say I liked it much. I knew there had to be someone out there who remembered the Caravelle.
Pete visited with comment and observations. The PCC in the picture is an interesting late variation as it has rider windows. Boston and Philadelphia had them on their cars and I am not sure who else did (I am not that much a devotee of traction although Boris does enjoy riding the open cars on the Mentor Street Railway because he can scoop stuff off sidewalk café tables as the car goes by.
The track cars are worth study, but some of us want to look at all of neat toys in the shop - belt drives and all. BTW, there is a book called Hetch Hetchy and Its Dam Railroad which will fill in a lot of the details.

OSP has sent along NP material and lots of other commentary as well - a tip of the Boston cap to you re the Hamilton; remember her well. BTW, I thought you would have hammered the Turbo question out of the park, knowing that part of the world. The Turbo Facility was at Fields Point, RI - just a tad down the bay for Providence.
Well, I'd better get back to it.
Oh, almost forgot, we will have extensive coverage of the Pre Tournament Parade and Smackdown. I see where Boris is already filing his teeth and the rest of the critters are getting ready to do or die for alma mater. Those who were at the last tournament remember (if there are any working brain cells left) that the parade was a high point (BTW, the boys were acquitted eventually of all felony charges), of the festivities and that the mascots (each of them) played their part.
However, we have a new mascot in Artie. He's a tough interview, and all he says is "who." I heard from our intrepid reporter that Artie is a lot more profound than he sounds and that he may very well be a "sleeper" in the mix. We have also heard rumors of reactivation of the Zeppelin (regrettably under new management). So much to investigate and so little time.

Sports news occupies my mind this morning. So, the boyz from Beantown won a game to remain alive. Back to the Bay area they go - with yet ANOTHER day off! Not hard to tell how the scheduling was done - all for the TV. Utterly ridiculous, shameful ‘n without a bit of care for the fans, game ‘n time of year! <geesh>
So, Joe Torre will be seeking employment. Doubt he'll be heading for the "soup lines" though. I'm surprised he waiting for the "offer" rather than telling George to stick it immediately after that public "release" a couple of weeks back. If you're gonna get rid of a guy - do it, but keep the rantings outta the papers. <double geesh> Yankee soap opera, Part Who Knows How Many!?!!? <triple geesh>

Every now ‘n then I've come across a "place" has the COME ON IN ‘n SIT A SPELL "feel" to it. But since my bar frequenting days are long past, "Our" Place has filled the void quite well. I think your comments pretty much echo my own in that regard - a great place for sure! [tup ]
