Norfolk Southern ............. no not the giant system brought about by that merger but the original which ran from Norfolk, Va well southern into North Carolina.

Since it became a part of todays giant you could argue it is the surviving road.

Growing up in Buffalo and my Dad working for the NYC, made me to this day an NYC fan. However, my grandfather was a loco engineer for the LV, the DL&W was at the end of the street and the Erie was 2 blocks away.

So, i follow posts on various sites for NYC and collectively what are called the "Anthracite Roads".

Southern Pacific. I grew up in Reno in the 40's and 50's, lived 1 1/2 blocks from the main line, remember cab forwards galore. Also remember the first "Black Widow" diesel that came through town, never thought it spelled the end of my favorite locomotive, the cab forward. Sad ending to a great railroad when the name died.

Growing up in Bath,Maine. I'll go with the Maine Central, since I can remember the Harvest Gold and Pine Green GP-38's and U25B's crawling through town(15 mph speed limit) as a young, impressionable lad![:D]

That cool. Mine is the Southern Pacific also. I spent alot of time passing back and forth the Roseville yard.

Even though by the time I was born, BN was 19 yrs. old, I wish I could have seen all of the Hill Lines, the Pennsy and the Wabash in operation, not to mention the GM&O.

I don't relly consider the Santa Fe a "Fallen Flag" yet. The corporate image still exists, and any time I can see a Scarlet & Silver Warbonnet pull through, I still think of it as being around.

I always enjoyed the daylight travel through the rockies and vicinity. What I miss is Great Northern's WESTERN STAR. It moved in a daylight schedule through my neck of the woods.

If you want to give a 9-year old boy an ego trip: tell him you are going to stop the streamliner just for him!!!
