Just thought I'd drop these off B4 heading home from the bar . . . .
Was fortunate enough to ride many of the AT&SF trains and everything they say about the Super Chief is correct and then some. The AT&SF train I rode most frequently was the San Diegans and the weekend trains were always crowded. I understand the Surfliners experience the same crowds today Have not had the pleasure of riding those yet. The San Joaquins are popular where I reside and with this summers gas price increases saw passenger increases on these Valley trains. Many days now the connecting Bakersfield - Las Vegas bus operated by Amtrak is sometimes two even three buses. Rumors are that if the service keeps expanding they will have to look at through train service once again, but UP doesn't want any more traffic over Tehachepi or between Barstow and Vegas. seems like it will be another fight to expand service with the UP.

Hello all.
I heard about the RDC. Well... In Duluth at the NSSR we have a working Chicago North Western RDC. It runs every Friday and Saturday up to Two Harbors and back for the passenger excursion.
This was C&NW but as you can see it has been painted as NSSR. This is located in Two Harbors at the Duluth & Iron range Depot.

PASSENGER TRAIN NOSTALGIA #18 Here’s something to enjoy regarding the RDC’s from Budd from a 1953 advertisement found in my personal collection. 40 RDC’S FOR THE PROGRESSIVE NEW HAVEN If anybody should know how to carry passengers profitably it’s the New Haven. Nearly half its income is derived from this source in contrast with most railroads where freight is king. This adds significance to the fact that the New Haven has become the largest purchaser of Budd RDC’s – stainless steel, self-propelled, rail diesel cars. In the nearly three years RDC’s have been operating in this country and abroad they have compiled an impressive record. In performance, they have improved every schedule they were assigned to. In operation they have proved both reliable and economical – two RDC’s saved one railroad $600,000 in a year. In the comfortable, air-conditioned service they render, RDC’s have increased passenger patronage – one RDC, operating in a new service between Worcester and New London, picked up 944 passengers in its first week. Both New England and the New Haven will benefit from expanded RDC operation. . . . . . . . . . . Still with the Budd nostalgia . . . so here's a little more!
In 1949, Budd introduced the Rail Diesel Car or RDC, a stainless steel self-propelled 'train in one car' which prolonged rail service on many lightly populated railway lines, but also provided a flexible, air conditioned car for suburban commuter service. More than 300 RDCs were built. Some RDCs are still in service in Canada, the USA and Australia. One example is OnTrack in Syracuse, New York. In the 1960s, Budd built the Pioneer III electric m.u. coach for intercity travel. Six were built and were purchased by the former Pennsylvania Railroad, but in 1966, these Pioneer III cars, later called "Silverliner I" cars, were replaced with the "Silverliner II" cars, which used the Pioneer III body, but with much improvements, for Philadelphia-area commuter rail service on both the PRR and Reading Company lines. Budd was also contracted for building the original Metroliner m.u. coaches for Washington-New York City service on the Northeast Corridor, but has been replaced with more traditional locomotive-hauled systems. The Silverliner II cars, still in service (but is slated to be replaced with newer "Silverliner V" cars), has a top speed of 100 m.p.h., while the old Metroliner MU cars traveled at speeds of 125 m.p.h., although they were slated for 150 m.p.h. service—a feat now possible with the new Acela trainsets.

PASSENGER TRAIN NOSTALGIA #17 Here’s something to enjoy regarding the Budd RDC’s from a 1950 advertisement found in my personal collection.
RDC – All-purpose Railway Passenger Coach RDC, introduced a year ago, is the new all-stainless steel, self-propelled Budd rail diesel car. It is good looking, quiet, smooth riding. It is comfortable, clean and air-conditioned. The New York Central now has two Budd RDC’s operating express service between Springfield and Boston, and a third, providing local service between western Massachusetts and Albany. Western Pacific has two RDC’s covering the 924 miles which separate Oakland and Salt Lake City. Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines have just placed six RDC’s in operation between Camden, Ocean City, Wildwood and Cape May. They leave Camden as a six-car train and end up as two-car trains at each of the three Jersey cities., Chicago & North Western has three RDC’s in commuter service; the Baltimore & Ohio will soon haves two and New York, Susquehanna Western, four. These varied uses to which RDC is being put cover almost every kind of service a railway passenger coach can render. The general acceptance of the Budd all-stainless steel RDC suggests that the development of railway passenger coach equipment may be headed in a new direction. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . From the 1930s until 1989 The Budd Company was also a leading manufacturer of stainless steel streamlined passenger rolling stock for a number of railroads. After briefly dabbling with French Micheline rubber-tyred technology, they built the Pioneer Zephyr for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1934, and hundreds of streamlined lightweight stainless steel passenger cars for new trains in the USA in the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1950s Budd built a set of two-story or high-level cars for the Santa Fe's El Capitan and Super Chief passenger trains, which became the prototypes for the Amtrak Superliner cars of the 1980s. Budd also built two-story gallery passenger cars for Chicago-area commuter service on the Milwaukee Road, Burlington Route, and Rock Island lines duing the 1960s and 1970s; most of these cars are still in service on today's Metra routes. Stainless steel Budd cars originally built for the Canadian Pacific Railway's 1955 train The Canadian are still in service with Via Rail Canada.

PASSENGER TRAIN NOSTALGIA #16 Here’s something to enjoy regarding the Budd RDC’s from a 1950 advertisement found in my personal collection. . . . . . . . . . . Single Car “Limited” . . . . . . . . . . Here is the new railroad car which is a train in itself – the self-propelled, diesel-powered, all-stainless steel RDC-1. The Budd Company created it to perform a service both to railroads and their patrons, by carrying more passengers on short or long hauls at lower operating cost. The RDC-1 seats ninety in air-conditioned comfort. With power transmitted hydraulically, from an effortless start it picks up speed like a whippet and stops in a fantastically short space . . . with the easy softness of pushing your hand against a pillow. Railroad men foresee a wide usefulness for this car. It may be operated as a single unit, or a number of cars can be coupled into a train, operated by one engineman. Improvement in any field of endeavor begins with imagination. The RDC-1 is another example of Budd practice which is first to envision clearly the need and then bring to bear all the resources of inventive engineering. It follows the modern stainless steel streamliner, the all-steel automobile body, the tapered steel disc wheel and so many other products in which Budd has translated imagination into practical accomplishment.
