PASSENGER TRAIN NOSTALGIA #50

Here’s something to enjoy regarding the Southern Railway (SR) from a 1949 advertisement in my personal collection.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . THE SOUTH . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Suits to a “T” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

WHY has an average of one new factory a day located along the lines of the Southern Railway System during the past three years?

Because industries are discovering that the South served by the Southern is a “gold mine of opportunity”! With a wealth of natural resources and advantages, expanding consumer markets, skilled and willing workers . . . and a bright future . . . the South suits all industries – to a “T”.

Look Ahead – Look South!” Earnest E. Norris, President.

. . . . . . . . . . SOUTHERN RAILWAY SYSTEM . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Southern Serves the South . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Enjoy!

Something for the dome lovers out their.

Baltimore
&
Ohio
(B&O)

The B&O purchased a pair of Pullman Standard 8-car coach streamliners following WWII for Baltimore-Chicago service. The two trains were delivered to the B&O in May 1949 and entered service as the COLUMBIANS May 5, 1949. The fourth car in each consist of the COLUMBIAN was a Strata-dome coach.
All cars in the COLUMBIAN trains were numbered and named the two Strata-dome coaches were 5550 HIGH DOME and 5551 SKY DOME. These cars seated 42 on the main level of the cars 18 forward of the dome and 24 aft of the dome. Beneath the dome was a pair of comfortable lounges for passengers to relax in; one of these lounges seated 6 the other 11. The domes were only 15’ 3” above the rails giving these two Strata-domes the distinction of being the lowest height short domes operated in North America. Upstairs in the dome of the two Pullman Standard built Strata-domes were 24 seats arranged in six pairs on either side of the center aisle. The backs of the seats were lower than those found in any other dome cars. One feature found on the B&O Strata-Domes not found on others was on the forward bulkhead of the car above the aisle was located a speedometer, clock, altimeter and barometer.
In December 1950 the B&O purchased three Strata-dome sleeping cars from the C&O and after updating these virtually new cars that had never entered service for their original owner assigned them to the CAPITOL LIMITED and SHENANDOAH. These Budd built cars dated to August 1956. After purchase by the B&O before entering scheduled service the cars made a brief visit to Pullman for upgrading for sleeping car service. At the short end of the car forward of the dome on the main level was 5 roomettes. On the main level to the rear of the dome were 3 drawing rooms. Beneath the dome was a single bedroom, car attendants quarters and conductors office Upstairs the dome seated the usual 24.
The CAPITOL LIMITED received a pair of these Strata-domes one for each train set. The SHENANDOAH with a single car provided every other day Strata-dome service between Chicago and Washington. The B&O numbered and named each of the cars as follows:

7600 MOONLIGHT DOME originally C&O 1850

7601 STARLIGHT DOME originally C&O 1851

7602 SUNLIGHT DOME originally C&O 1852

The B&0 7600 MOONLIGHT DOME to the SHENANDOAH, while 7601 STARLIGHT DOME and 7602 SUNLIGHT DOME were assigned to the CAPITOL LIMITED.
In 1952 all five domes were shopped and after having lights mounted on the right side roofs forward of the domes became the first and only dome cars that could light up the countryside at night. These floodlights were nothing more than locomotive headlights with each putting out 250 watts. They were mounted on the roofs at angles of 60, 70, 80 and 85 degrees from the cars centerline. A breaker was mounted ahead of the lights to protect them from hanging icicles in tunnels and at stations having overhead platforms. The lights were used outside of the major towns and turned off when passing through heavily populated areas.
The three Strata-dome sleeping cars were leased to the Atlantic Coast Line between December 1965 and April 1966. After return from the ACL the cars were leased to the Canadian National from May 1966 to March 1968. The CN assigned the three cars to service in the SUPER CONTINENTAL between Edmonton and Vancouver.
After return from the CN in March 1968 the B&O assigned the cars to the CAPITOL LIMITED until July 1968 when the three Strata-dome cars were once again leased out. This time they were leased to the Seaboard Coast Line who purchased the three domes in July 1969. During this period they operated in the FLORIDA SPECIAL during the winter season and SILVER METEOR at other times. In both trains they operated between Richmond and Miami. Once more the cars were sold to Hamburg Industries in 1970 who after refurbishing the cars leased them back to the SCL.

Hi Tom,

Nice Fallen Flag - the Erie from days gone by. Has quite a history, but we'll save that for the bar! Haven't come across anything with the Erie markings that is permitted to be used by third parties ....

Nice B&O segment Al, if I didn't know better I'd swear you and Tom conjured up this "coincidence" with your Posting here and his over at the bar with the new series beginning with the B&O![tup]

Also enjoyed the Nostalgia on the Southern another nice selection![tup]

Good Morning Tom

Lars I hope this satifys your dome craving for this day.

Chesapeake
&
Ohio
(C&O)

The Chesapeake & Ohio purchased six domes all delivered by Budd in 1948 these six domes were of two different types. There were 3-coach–lounge observations 1875-1877 and three family room dome cars 1850-1852 as they were called. Both types of domes were built for the CHESSIE a new daytime streamliner between Washington – Newport News and Cincinnati. The CHESSIE would have operated as two sections east of Charleston. One section of the CHESSIE to and from Washington and the other section of the CHESSIE to and from Phoebus (Newport News), consolidating westbound at Charleston and splitting at this point eastbound. Alas, it really didn’t matter, as the CHESSIE never entered service. The forty-six cars delivered by Budd in August 1948 for the CHESSIE trains were disbursed over the next few years. All six of the dome cars were sold. The Dome sleeping cars were sold to the B&O in December 1950 for service in the CAPITOL LIMITED and SHENANDOAH. The C&O had seriously considered adding these cars to their own SPORTSMAN and even went so far as to assign names to the cars even though the names were not actually applied as follows:

1850 BELLE ISLE DOME

1851 CHAMBERLIN DOME

1852 HAMPTON ROADS DOME

See the B&O Chapter for further detail of these cars.
The other three CHESSIE domes the coach lounge Observations featured 20 seats forward of the dome and 16 seat lounge aft of the dome in the rounded end of the cars. A newsagent’s stand and the cars restrooms were located beneath the 24 seat domes. The C&O assigned these cars to service in the PERE MARQUETTES between Chicago – Grand Rapids and Detroit – Grand Rapids. The three cars 1875-1877 were sold to the Rio Grande in September 1949. Before delivery to the Rio Grande the cars were fitted with an adaptor complete with diaphragm for mid-train operation. After repainting in Grande Gold and Black the cars were renumbered 1248-1250 respectively. See Rio Grande Chapter for further details on these cars.

Hi Tom,

Just thought I'd swing by here on the way to the bar to see wazzup ... not much going on.

That Canadian Pacific outfit was surely quite the transportation system - wroldwide. Many folks "down here" probably never knew just how extensive a network they had. FIne organization. Met a few sailors from those times - very professional and proud folks.

Enjoyed that Moonlight Dome from B&O - I have that in my album as well. Saved me a post. [swg]

The above two cars were actually the first of eleven new lightweight stream-lined cars built in anticipation of all new 15 Car EMPIRE BUILDERS to be inaugurated June 3, 1951. These eleven new sleeping cars were for the older EMPIRE BUILDERS to create a sixth consist. This would permit the six sets of the first streamlined EMPIRE BUILDERS to become the new WESTERN STAR another Chicago - Pacific Northwest Streamliner operating on a slower schedule to replace the heavyweight ORIENTAL LIMITED. Pullman Standard delivered eight GLACIER series sleeping cars in December 1950. The new WESTERN STAR trains would leave the mainline westbound at Havre, Montana and run southwest to Great Falls Montana. The train would then depart Great Falls in a northerly direction and rejoin the mainline at Shelby Montana. The GN would operate three of the new GLACIER series cars as dedicated St. Paul - Great Falls Sleeping cars 1181 KINTLA GLACIER, 1182 AGASSIZ GLACIER, and 1183 HUDSON GLACIER. The new WESTERN STAR would become the train of Glacier National Park, as it would serve the park both eastbound and westbound in daylight hours. The WESTERN STAR would carry many extra Pullman-sleeping cars in the summer months from tour operators and railroad charters to and from the magnificent Glacier National Park. Many of these foreign sleeping cars running to the park would be set out at Glacier and serve as sleeping quarters for the passengers visiting the park. Later these sleeping cars would be picked up by the WESTERN STAR at Glacier or in many cases the cars may have been moved to Belton where they were picked up. Belton was the west entrance to Glacier National Park and Glacier was the east entrance to Glacier National Park with both entrances on the GN mainline over Marias Pass just 57 miles apart. For a number of years the WESTERN STAR carried extra sleeping cars to and from Glacier National Park that originated in both the east and west so there was Pullman Sleeping cars traveling in the WESTERN STAR in both directions. Those Glacier National Park bound cars that originated in California generally departed in the WESTERN STAR from Spokane while if the tour included time in Seattle the cars departed from Seattle.
In addition to dedicated GLACIER series sleeping cars between St. Paul and Great Falls the WESTERN STAR also carried overnight GLACIER series sleeping cars between Spokane and Seattle in each direction. The two cars designated as Spokane - Seattle sleeping cars were 1184 CHANEY GLACIER and 1185 PARADISE GLACIER. All of the additional GLACIER series sleeping cars and the one additional RIVER series Sleeper Lounge Observation were GN owned. The new WESTERN STAR was inaugurated on June 3, 1951.

The latter Company built the Baggage 60' Railway post Office cars, Baggage Crew Dormitory Cars, 60 Revenue seat Short trip Coaches, all feature cars (Diners and Lounges). Between April and August 1955 the GN cycled each of the RIVER series Sleeper Lounge Observations assigned to the WESTERN STAR through Pullman Calumet shops to rebuild the interiors. Originally built as 2 Double Bedroom 1 Drawing Room Buffet 20 Seat Lounge Observations the cars returned to GN with 4 Double Bedrooms 1 Compartment 6 Roomettes and 9 seat Lounge Observation. The car names were changed from RIVER series cars to COULEE series cars at that time. When the COULEE series cars were returned to the GN they were assigned to the Mid-Century EMPIRE BUILDER to give that train more sleeping car capacity. The MOUNTAIN series cars the GN built for the Mid-Century EMPIRE BUILDER were then assigned to the WESTERN STAR. The COULEE series Sleeper Lounge Observations are the only streamlined Observations operated by any railroad with Roomettes. The MOUNTAIN series Observations Roomettes were not sold as revenue space until years later in the combined WESTERN STAR/ FAST MAIL. Burlington owned PASS series sleeping car 1168 RED GAP PASS was transferred to GN ownership in June 1955. At that time the WESTERN STAR began operating with one less PASS series sleeping cars in each consist between Chicago and Seattle.
The six surplus PASS series sleeping cars were than assigned to a pool for the WESTERN STAR in summer season and the WINNIPEG LIMITED at other times of the year.
In 1956 GN returned GLACIER series Sleeping cars 1175 OBERLIN GLACIER and 1177 HARRISON GLACIER to Pullman Calumet for remodeling for WINNIPEG LIMITED service. The two GLACIER series cars originally built with 16 Duplex Roomettes and 4 Double Bedrooms returned from Pullman as Plan 4108K 8 Duplex Roomette 2 Double Bedroom Buffet 12 Seat Dinette 12 Seat Lounge Cars with new names and numbers as follows.

1198 MANITOBA CLUB originally 1175 OBERLIN GLACIER

1199 WINNIPEG CLUB originally 1177 HARRISON GLACIER

The two new CLUB series cars were assigned to the WINNIPEG LIMITED. At that time the WINNIPEG LIMITED consists were carrying one GLACIER, one PASS, and one of the CLUB series cars in each consist.
The Great Northern was in a unique situation not enjoyed by many railroads in the early 1960's having first class revenues more than holding there own. The GN sleeping cars were traveling full in the summer seasons and not doing to badly in the winters. But 1962 stretched the railroad's passenger capacity to the limit. It was that summer of 1962 that Seattle had its first World's Fair and passenger volume soared to record levels for the duration of the fair. The one problem discovered during the fair was that the GN had a shortage of Double Bedroom capacity in the EMPIRE BUILDER consists. GN began to sense reluctance on many passengers' parts to book upper or lower section space. Maybe it was due to the lack of privacy offered by these accommodations that left these spaces as the very last to be booked after everything else was full. The GN decided to rebuild five of the EMPIRE BUILDER RIVER series Sleeping cars to increase Room space. The cars were returned to Pullman Calumet and emerged as Plan: 4181A cars. Built originally as Plan: 4181 4 Section 1 Compartment 7 Duplex Roomette 3 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars. After conversion the cars were 7 Duplex Roomette 1 Compartment 7 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars. The five cars rebuilt to this configuration in 1963 were 1260 SKYKOMISH RIVER, 1262 SNOHOMISH RIVER, 1263 MILK RIVER, 1264 BAD AXE RIVER and 1274 BOIS DE SIOUX RIVER. After the conversion the cars were assigned to through Chicago - Seattle service in the EMPIRE BUILDER.
Beginning in 1959 the Sleeping car space in the WESTERN STAR was sold at Coach fare plus a room charge in order to answer the NORTH COAST LIMITED Slumbercoach service. The GN only offered the service in the WESTERN STAR and it was a real bargain when one remembers that a typical Slumbercoach was set up for forty passengers. The GLACIER series sleeping cars were 16 Duplex Roomette 4 Double Bedroom cars with much more spacious accommodation for 24 passengers.
The Great Northern only operated lightweight streamlined sleeping cars in the EMPIRE BUILDER, WESTERN STAR and WINNIPEG LIMITED.

Streamlined Sleeping Cars
by Al

The CPR has the distinction of being the only railroad in North America to construct lightweight streamlined first class sleeping cars in heir own shops.
This was really just a natural evolution as the CPR built many heavyweight sleeping cars in the same Angus shops located in Montreal. The sleeping cars built by the CPR were modern heavyweights during the period 1928-1931.
The cars were assigned to such trains as the IMPERIAL between Montreal and Vancouver, the DOMINION between Toronto and Vancouver and the Montreal - Chicago CANADIAN (not to be confused with the later transcontinental streamliner by this name). The SOO-PACIFIC EXPRESS between Chicago and Vancouver connected with the DOMINION westbound at Moose Jaw for the remainder of the trip to Vancouver. Eastbound the SOO-PACIFIC EXPRESS operated combined with the IMPERIAL between Vancouver and Moose Jaw.
First of the new heavyweight cars to come from Angus shops were the ten LAKE series 4 Compartment 1 Drawing Room Buffet lounge cars in 1928.

Following WW II the Angus shops were busy repairing worn out cars and producing new streamlined cars. Between September 1949 and February 1950 the Angus shops built the nineteen GROVE series 10 Roomette 5 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars. These were the only first class streamlined sleeping cars ever produced by a North American Railroad. The GROVE series were easily distinguishable as CPR Angus shop products by their curved sides. The cars were assigned to General Service and after giving yeoman service to the CPR were sold to the NdeM for further use.

Canadian Pacific began shopping for new streamlined lightweight cars in 1952. Representatives of the railroad visited each of the car manufacturers in both Canada and the United States. The group with the most enthusiasm was the group that visited Budd Companies Red Lion facility outside Philadelphia in November 1952. While their the team toured the plant and while touring the plant they happened to see the nearly complete CB&Q 378 SILVER LOOKOUT. This car was a Vista - Dome 3 double Bedroom 1 Drawing Room Buffet Cocktail Lounge Observation Lounge Car destined for service in the famed CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR. One look at this car and the group was sold.
They returned to Canada and began putting plans together for a train to be named the ROYAL CANADIAN for transcontinental service. Not only did the CPR order enough cars for the new ROYAL CANADIAN later called just the CANADIAN the ROYAL being dropped before the cars were even delivered, but they ordered enough of the new cars to equip the secondary DOMINION train with many of the new Budd cars. Three types of Sleeping cars were ordered from Budd the CHATEAU series with 8 Duplex Roomettes 3 Double Bedrooms 1 Drawing Room and 4 Sections. The CPR ordered 29 of these cars all named for CHATEAUS.
Another type streamlined sleeping car ordered from Budd was the MANOR series cars with 4 Roomettes 5 Double Bedrooms 1 Compartment and 4 Sections, the CPR ordered 42.
The third sleeping car type ordered from Budd was the 3 Double Bedroom 1 Drawing Room 12 seat Mural Lounge Buffet 24 seat Dome 13 seat Lounge Observation PARK series cars. These cars were nearly identical to the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR car seen in Philadelphia in November 1952. The CPR ordered 18 of the PARK series cars, they were named for Canadian National and Provincial parks.

Besides the above cars the CNR Angus shops were busy remodeling twenty-two 14 Section Tourist Sleeping cars for assignment to the CANADIAN. The heavyweight tourist cars were refurbished and repainted inside. The exteriors of the cars were fitted with fluted stainless steel panels to match the exteriors of the lightweight stream-lined Budd built cars. The CPR "U" series tourist sleeping cars lasted until 1965 in the consists of the CANADIAN before being withdrawn. They were easily spotted in the trains as the clerestory roofs of theses cars were higher than the Budd cars. The CANADIANS carried three per consist and they were found forward in the train just behind the Budd built Baggage Crew Dormitory car and ahead of the coach section of the CANADIAN.

Hello Tom,

Nice one with the Illinois Central. Being an easterner, don't have much of a handle on the roads "way out thataway!" [swg] Anyway, your series of Fallen Flags and Nostalgia really brings to light all kinds of 'stuff' I've either forgotten or never knew. Appreciate it.[tup]

Figured I'd swing by the bar before heading out this afternoon .... Catch ya over there.

Until the next time!

In keeping with the IC theme today.
ILLINOIS
CENTRAL
streamlined sleeping cars
by AL

The IC entered the streamliner sweep-stakes May 17, 1936 with the articulated five car GREEN DIAMOND between Chicago and St. Louis round trip daily. The GREEN DIAMOND carried no sleeping car and is briefly mentioned here to give readers some idea how early the IC became interested in streamlining.
A second non-articulated all coach seven car diesel powered streamliner the CITY OF MIAMI entered service December 18, 1940 between Chicago and Miami on an every third day schedule. Two other seven car coach streamliners one FEC owned the DIXIE FLAGLER the other PRR owned the SOUTH WIND began operating over different routes between Chicago and Miami and between the three trains they provided daily service between Chicago and Miami in each direction.
The pride of the Illinois Central was the all Pullman PANAMA LIMITED between Chicago and New Orleans. The IC placed orders with Pullman for two train sets to equip all new diesel powered lightweight stream-lined PANAMA LIMITEDS. The new trains entered service overnight on May 1, 1942 early in WW II one of the last new streamlined trains to enter service before passenger car production was curtailed for the duration of the war. The PANAMA LIMITED train sets were the first new IC trains delivered in the Chocolate and Orange scheme with yellow accents and lettering the color scheme that would become the permanent IC passenger colors.
Each southbound PANAMA LIMITED was eleven cars in length between Chicago and Carbondale, Ill. At that point a St. Louis sleeping cars was added bringing the trains length to twelve cars between Carbondale and Jackson, Miss. At that point a Sleeping car from Chicago was set out and forwarded to Gulfport. Between Jackson and New Orleans the southbound PANAMA LIMITED was once again an eleven-car train. The northbound PANAMA LIMITED was just the exact opposite.

Following the second world war it was decided that not only would new sleeping cars be purchased for the PANAMA LIMITED but for the CITY OF MIAMI as well. The CITY OF MIAMI operated over the IC between Chicago and Birmingham, CofG between Birmingham and Albany, Georgia, ACL between Albany and Jacksonville and FEC between Jacksonville and Miami.
The first postwar streamlined sleeping cars delivered to the IC were five "C" prefix named 10 Roomette 6 Double Bedroom cars. These five cars were under construction by Pullman Standard for the C&O when they were diverted to the IC. These five cars were excellent from the IC point of view as they had the more expensive Double Bedrooms located in the center of the car with five roomettes at each end. Initially two of the "C" series cars were assigned to each consist of the PANAMA LIMITED freeing up four of the 6 section 6 Roomette 4 Double Bedroom cars. Three of these five cars one "C" series 10 Roomette 6 Double Bedroom and two of the 6 Section 6 Roomette 4 Double Bedroom cars then became the sleeping car section of the CITY OF MIAMI beginning in the winter 1950-51 season. The CITY OF MIAMI sleeping car section would be carried forward in the consist behind the Baggage Crew Dormitory car ahead of the coaches. The other two 6 Section 6 Roomette 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars were then assigned to the Chicago - St. Louis NIGHT DIAMONDS. The two 18 Roomette Sleeping cars were dropped from the PANAMA LIMITED consist and added to the LOUISIANE consists nightly between Chicago and Memphis.

The IC purchased five additional "C" series sleeping cars from the C&O in October 1950. After the stainless steel side panels were removed and the cars repainted in IC Chocolate, Orange and Yellow the cars were assigned to the PANAMA LIMITED - CITY OF MIAMI pool of Sleeping cars. This released an additional 6-6-4 sleeping car from each PANAMA LIMITED consist and one 6-6-4 from the CITY OF MIAMI consist. These cars were than assigned to other IC trains while the CITY OF MIAMI was assigned two additional 10-6 Sleeping cars. Two additional C series 10 Roomette 6 Double Bedroom Sleeping Cars were received by the IC in November 1950 from the C&O and a final 10-6 was received from the C&O in January 1951. These cars like the previous cars from October all had the stainless steel side panels removed and were repainted IC colors prior to entering service in the PANAMA LIMITED - CITY OF MIAMI pool as follows:

OCTOBER 1950

CALVERT originally C&O 2652 CITY OF ST. JOSEPH

CHEBANSE originally C&O 2647 CITY OF FOSTORIA

CLARKSDALE originally C&O 2649 CITY OF LOGAN

COBDEN originally C&O 2651 CITY OF BENTON HARBOR

COLES COUNTY originally C&O 2650 CITY OF PETOSKEY

NOVEMBER 1950

CLIFTON originally C&O 2648 CITY OF MARION

CRYSTAL SPRINGS originally C&O 2620 CITY OF CHARLESTON

JANUARY 1951

CORINTH originally C&O 2619 CITY OF MONTGOMERY

The above cars were practically new most having hardly turned a wheel in C&O service in the few months since their delivery. With the addition of these cars the IC owned thirteen modern 10-6 sleeping cars. The addition of these cars also freed up additional 6-6-4 cars from the PANAMA LIMITED- CITY OF MIAMI pool. The 6-6-4 cars were then assigned to such trains as the HAWKEYE between Chicago and Sioux City the first lightweight stream-lined sleeping cars assigned to this train. In addition the NIGHT DIAMONDS overnight between St. Louis and Chicago received additional 6-6-4 sleeping cars.
The IC added a second CITY OF MIAMI train set during 1951-52 so the additional 10-6 cars covered both CITY OF MIAMI trains and both PANAMA LIMITED trains.
Illinois Central was to purchase only six more new sleeping cars the "B" series cars of 1953. These 11 Double Bedroom cars were purchased for the CITY OF MIAMI - PANAMA LIMITED pool. These all Bedroom Cars were assigned two each to the PANAMA LIMITED consists during the summer months and each CITY OF MIAMI consist operated with one. In the winter months the assignments were reversed with each CITY OF MIAMI consist assigned two and the PANAMA LIMITED consists assigned but one each.

Illinois Central purchased all remaining sleeping cars used from other roads. The first of the used sleeping cars to arrive in October 1958 were two ex NYC CASCADE series prewar 10 Roomette 5 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars followed by two more in November 1958. These four ex CASCADE series cars became the IC "D" series being assigned names beginning with D. Winters these cars were assigned to the CITY OF MIAMI consists and summers they operated in the HAWKEYE and other trains. Two of the "D" series cars operated Chicago - Miami while the other two operated St. Louis- Miami in the CITY OF MIAMI consists.

In January 1960 the NYC delivered four 22 Roomette sleeping cars to the IC, these cars were the BAY series on the NYC and became the "F" series on the IC. After repainting the cars were assigned winter months to the CITY OF MIAMI / PANAMA LIMITED pool and summers assigned to the General Service pool. It is doubtful if these cars ever saw service in other than the CITY OF MIAMI/PANAMA LIMITED pool.

The IC purchased a single used 22 Roomette Sleeping cars of the BAY series from the NYC in February 1961 and promptly rebuilt the former NYC 10407 LITTLE NECK BAY into a 60' Railway Post Office Baggage Car and numbered it IC 150.
In September 1961 another former NYC 22 Roomette Sleeping Car NYC 10441 GREAT SOUTH BAY was received by the IC and rebuilt to a 60' Railway Post Office Baggage Car numbered IC 152.
In December 1961 the IC received three more ex NYC BAY series 22 Roomette sleeping cars and rebuilt all three to Baggage - Express cars as follows.

These two cars were more recently assigned to the LOUISIANE between Chicago and Memphis overnight in both directions, named CITY OF NEW ORLEANS and CITY OF JACKSON. The IC Burnside shops rebuilt both to 60' Railway Post Office Baggage Cars numbering them 153 and 154 respectively.
In October 1962 the IC received three former NYC IMPERIAL series sleeping cars and after repainting placed them in the CITY OF MIAMI / PANAMA LIMITED pool. The cars unlike the earlier cars in the "G" series were assigned "H" series names. Some railroad historians believe this was for the simple reason the IC did not have many on line community names beginning with G. A fourth 'H" series 4 Compartment 2 Drawing Room 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping car was added in December 1962. The four cars were assigned to the CITY OF MIAMI/PANAMA LIMITED pool.

In March 1963 a lone NYC IMPERIAL series 4 Compartment 2 Drawing Room 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping car 10010 IMPERIAL CHAMBER was sold to the IC who repainted the car and named it HALEYVILLE. This car was then assigned to the CITY OF MIAMI / PANAMA LIMITED pool.
In September, 1963 two additional NYC IMPERIAL series 4 Compartment 2 drawing Room 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars were delivered by the NYC to the IC 10017 IMPERIAL MANOR and 10007 IMPERIAL VALLEY. These would be the last IC "H" series cars to enter IC service after repainting and receiving the names HAZELHURST and HYDE PARK respectively. These two cars also joined the CITY OF MIAMI / PANAMA LIMITED pool.
In October 1963 the IC rebuilt the "F" series 22 Roomette sleeping car FULTON into a Baggage 30' Railway Post Office Car numbering the car 156. This car was originally a NYC BAY series car numbered and named 10431 MOBILE BAY.
In January 1964 the same type of rebuild took place with "F" series 22 Roomette sleeping car FERNWOOD becoming Baggage 30' Railway Post Office Car 157. This car was originally NYC BAY series 10415 TURTLE BAY.
The remaining two "F" series 22 Roomette Sleeping cars were rebuilt to 9 Seat Lunch Counter 24 seat Dining 12 Seat Lounge Cars. FLOSSMOOR originally NYC BAY series 10426 CHIPPEWA BAY was rebuilt in March 1964 receiving IC number 4202 at that time.
Identical car FORT DODGE originally NYC 10427 SANDUSKY BAY was rebuilt in October 1963 and numbered IC 4203. These two cars were assigned to the remnants of the GREEN DIAMOND - DAYLIGHT.
Still in need of additional Railway Post Office capacity the IC retired prewar PANAMA LIMITED 6 Section 6 Roomette 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping car LAND O' STRAWBERRIES and rebuilt this car to 30' Railway Post Office Baggage Car 158 in June 1964.
This was followed by KING COAL in November 1964 rebuilt to Baggage 30' Railway Post Office Car 159.
One additional prewar PANAMA LIMITED 6-6-4 PELICAN STATE was rebuilt to a Baggage 30' Railway Post Office Car in April 1965 and numbered 160.
The IC purchased eight used 10-6 sleeping cars from the NKP in September 1965 that were nearly identical to there other 10-6 sleeping cars with the Bedrooms located in the center of the cars. After removing the stainless side panels and repainting in IC colors the cars were added to the "C' series as follows.

Each winter beginning with the 1959-60 winter season the IC leased NP Vista Dome Sleeping Cars. That first winter they leased four of the 4 Roomette 4 Duplex Single Room 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping Cars. These were Budd built domes with 24 seats in the dome. The IC repainted all four Vista Domes into IC colors and assigned two to the PANAMA LIMITED and the other two to the CITY OF MIAMIS. After that first winter the IC decided to only lease two of the NP Vista Dome Sleeping cars each winter for the CITY OF MIAMI. Management felt that the PANAMA LIMITEDS trip was mostly nocturnal so the need for the domes was not necessary. But each winter the IC would repaint the NP domes to IC colors and repaint them NP colors each spring for return to the NORTH COAST LIMITED.

PASSENGER TRAIN NOSTALGIA #52

Here’s something to enjoy regarding the General Motors Electro-Motive Division from a 1948 advertisement in my personal collection.

The colorful recreation car on The Jeffersonian, Pennsylvania Railroad all-coah streamliner, provides a luxurious game and reading lounge, a children’s playroom, a miniature movie theatre and a sunken buffet-lounge. The Jeffersonian is in daily service between New York and St. Louis. It is provided by a General Motors locomotive.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PLAY AS YOU GO . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

You get more fun out of the pleasures today’s travel affords when you train is powered by a General Motors Diesel locomotive.

For then you travel with a new smoothness – and a new speed, too. Often, on the straightaways, your train will top 100 miles an hour.

General Motors locomotives have also brought a new cleanliness to travel - no smoke and cinders to mar your appearance; no clouds of steam to mar your view.

For years General Motors locomotives have held the records for on-time arrivals.

It is easy to see why 197 of America’s finest, fastest name trains are headed by General Motors power.

Easy to understand why better trains follow General Motors locomotives.

Hello Captain Tom,

I am a bit amazed that this thread is STILL up and running. Looks more like an annex of the bar than anything else. I suppose it does give the opportunity to test out a posting or two, before going for the real thing over at the bar!<grin>

Nice photos from you and Lars and I am looking forward to resuming my activities with you all once I am back in Alberta and comfortably settled in up in the mountains!

Hi Tom

Love that steamer ... really brings back some memories, not necessarily of the Santa Fe, but of steam locomotives and just how immense they were, especially to a bystanding child!

Here's a little something I found on Wikipedia regarding the origin of the name Nickel Plate for that piece you provided us today:

QUOTE: The following is an excerpt from the book The Nickel Plate Road, A Short History of the New York, Chicago & St. Louis R.R. printed in 1954. The book is a record of an address given by Lynne L. White (a former president of the Nickel Plate) to the Newcomen Society of the United States, held in the ballroom of the Hotel Lawrence, Erie, Pa., November 11, 1954. Mr. White was guest of honor at this "1954 Lake Erie Dinner".

Through northern Ohio, already served by four railroads, location of the line developed intense rivalries among cities. Three routes were surveyed and communities along each proposed route vied in the raising of public subscriptions to donate rights-of-way. The road's general offices at Cleveland frequently were besieged by delegations hoping to bring about the routing of the line through their communities. During these inter-city rivalries was born the nickname for the New York, Chicago and St. Louis - The Nickel Plate Road - which rapidly became the name most commonly used.
Numerous legends have grown about when and how the name "Nickel Plate" was first applied. The accepted version is that it appeared first in an article in the Norwalk, Ohio, Chronicle of March 10, 1881. On that date the Chronicle reported the arrival of a party of engineers to make a survey for the "great New York and St. Louis double track, nickel plated railroad."
Later, while attempting to induce the company to build the line through Norwalk instead of Bellevue, Ohio, the Chronicle again referred to the road as "nickel plated" - a term regarded as indicative of the project's glittering prospects and substantial financial backing.
In 1882, the Nickel Plate recognized F.R. Loomis, owner and editor of the Norwalk Chronicle, as originator of the term and issued him Complimentary Pass No. 1.
Thus Norwalk named the road - but Bellevue finally got it.

Until the next time!

(NICKEL PLATE)Streamlined sleeping cars
by Al
The first lightweight streamlined Sleeping cars operated on the NKP were a pair of Pullman Pool service 18 roomette cars ROOMETTE I and ROOMETTE II. These two cars were assigned to overnight Chicago - Cleveland service in the NICKEL PLATE LIMITED with the new names MOSES CLEAVELAND and ROBERT DE LA SALLE respectively. In 1945 these cars ownership was transferred to the NKP and the cars remained in NICKEL PLATE LIMITED service until January 1950. At that time the cars were transferred to overnight St. Louis - Cleveland service in unnamed 9-10. With the change the cars were repainted Blue and Silver to match the new 10-6 sleeping cars then arriving and renamed once again. MOSES CLEVELAND was renamed COTY OF COLDWATER and ROBERT DE LA SALLE received the new name CITY OF ST. MARYS. The two cars eventually were transferred back to the NICKEL PLATE LIMITED and ran out there days in that train before retirement in July 1961after that date they became stationary Crew Dormitory cars. The two cars were scrapped in 1968 at Decatur, Ill.

The NKP received new 10-6 Sleeping cars in 1950 built by Pullman Standard almost identical to those built for the C&O with the Bedrooms located in the center of the cars and five Roomettes located at each end. The NKP was closely associated with the C&O at the time the cars were ordered. The thirteen cars were delivered in January and February 1950. The first 10-6 sleeping cars delivered were assigned to the NICKEL PLATE LIMITED between Chicago - Cleveland, Chicago - Buffalo and in partnership with the DL&W there were through 10-6 sleeping cars between Chicago and Hoboken. In addition the new 10-6 sleeping cars were assigned to the NEW YORKER and its westbound counterpart the WESTERNER with sleeping cars between Chicago and Hoboken again in partnership with the DL&W both roads supplying 10-6 sleeping cars for this service. Unnamed 9-10 the St. Louis - Cleveland trains were the last to receive the 10-6 sleeping cars with each consist receiving a single car operating with the 18 Roomette cars until they were returned to the NICKEL PLATE LIMITED later in 1950. Beginning September 25, 1954 the NICKEL PLATE LIMITED trains were renamed the CITY OF CLEVELAND and CITY OF CHICAGO but continued to operate to and from Buffalo with through sleeping cars beyond to and from Hoboken. The through sleeping car service beyond Buffalo ended in 1958. After the merger of the Erie and DL&W October 17, 1960 forming the E-L the WESTERNER and NEW YORKER only carried through sleeping cars between Hoboken and Cleveland after August 4, 1962. The NKP/DL&W route between Chicago and Hoboken was 920 miles only thirteen miles greater than the PRR route and over forty miles shorter than the NYC route.
Over on the St. Louis - Cleveland route the unnamed trains 9-10 received names beginning October 28, 1956 westbound was named the BLUE ARROW and its eastbound counterpart was named the BLUE DART. The westbound BLU ARROW made its final run March 13, 1959 and the following day the eastbound BLUE DART made its final run. The CITY OF CLEVELAND and CITY OF CHICAGO lasted until after the N&W merger October 16, 1964 not being discontinued until September 10, 1965. All of the 10-6 Sleeping cars were sold to other railroads with eight going to the IC and five going to the CN. Both roads stripped the fluted stainless panels from the cars and repainted them in their own color schemes.
Besides the new 10-6 Sleeping cars received in 1950 the NKP received two 5 Double Bedroom 3 crew Dormitory Kitchen 18 seat dining 4 Seat Lounge cars numbered and named 150 CITY OF CLEVELAND and 151 CITY OF CHICAGO. These two cars operated in overnight service between their namesake cities. They served as lounges at night and served breakfast in the morning before arrival in the opposite terminals.
