Good morning guys! I think the bar did pretty well yesterday on this Holiday weekend! Nice IT fallen flag encores and GNR and CP ads Mr. Tom, and terrific job on the patron postings. I had no idea I was spending so much time here. (Sorry it couldn't have been more!) [;)] Have fun at your game today!

Speaking of which ..howabout them SOX Rob?[:-^] Oh well, it's early in the season, and most of the teams are pretty much even. I don't pay much attention to standings until after the All-Star game. Nice encores on the Canadian Electric Car & Loco Co's. and American supplier list for streetcars from you yesterday.

Enjoyed your steam pix today Peter. Well done!

My yesterday was really great. [xx(] I spent the morning cleaning and boxing, then we went to the stable, and then at 4pm we turned over our money and signed a lease on an old farmhouse (complete with 10 sheep) to live in while our new home is being built. (did I already tell ya'll this?) Anyhow, the condo is now for sale and we'll be gradually moving into he farmhouse over the next 6 weeks. We won't officially move till the kids fini***heir school year in early June. By that time, most everything will be out of this place, and hopefully we'll have a closing sale. I'm hoping this doesn't cut too much into the time I spend here! [:D]

Here are some random pix for ya'll, and talk to you later!

[:I] A couple had two little boys, ages eight and ten, who were excessively mischievous.
The two were always getting into trouble and their parents could be confident that if any mischief occurred in their town, their two young sons were involved in some capacity. The parents were at their wit's end as to what to do about their sons' behavior.
The parents had heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children in the past, so they contacted him, and he agreed to give it his best shot. He asked to see the boys individually, so the eight-year-old was sent to meet with him first. The clergyman sat the boy down and asked him sternly, "Where is God?" The boy made no response, so the clergyman repeated the question in an even sterner tone, "Where is God?" Again the boy made no attempt to answer, so the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face, "WHERE IS GOD?"
At that, the boy bolted from the room, ran directly home, and slammed himself in his closet. His older brother followed him into the closet and said, "What happened?"
The younger brother replied, "We are in BIG trouble this time. God is missing and they think we did it!" [:I]

Pic 2 after arrival at Carlisle
Pic3 A front end shot showing the British Caprotti valve gear. The loco is a credit to the people who restored her after she was at Barry scrapyard for many years, with many parts having to be made from new including two outside cylinders pistons and valve gear.
Pic4 At Loughbourough on part of Great Central Railway that has been preserved is Robinsons 2-8-0 loco # 63601. this the only GC freight loco left. It is owned by the National Railway Museum and was restored with the help of the Steam Railway Magazine. the small plate under the number is the shed plate showing where the loco was allocated.

Hi Tom and all.

A pint of Bathams LEON as a nightcap please.

Interesting afternoon at the bar. Good info on the PE and the tunnel DAVE[tup]. It is good to hear that the part that was restored attracted far better passenger figues than predicted.[tup].

ROB it is hard to believe that it is nearly 100 pages ago since the two Encores were posted. The number of companies in Canada who produced electric cars and locos is impressive. Bombardier produce trains for UK railways today.

Lars Glad you enjoyed the baseball game after the rain delay [tup].

and TOM I hope it is a good game at the new Busch for you tomorrow. I wonder if it is still possible to see the UP trains climbing up to the bridge which was visible from the old stadium[?].
Thanks for the GNR and CP encores[tup] PETE.

Evenin' Gents!

A bit o' luck today in that I wound up with two tickets to tomorrow's Cardinals vs Reds game at the new Busch Stadium. These are fantastic seats - about 9 rows up from the field and just a bit to the left of home plate. Really will be a treat!

I used to go to quite a few more games than in the past couple of decades - once they went out on strike the first time - that was it for me and the 40 game package I used to buy for my family each season. Reduced the frequency to just a handful of games each year, if that.

Anyway, here's a URL on the new stadium that may be of interest:

Thanx Rob for joining in on the ENCORE! idea for Saturday.[tup][tup][tup]

Lars Figured you would enjoy Friday night's game - Glavine pitched like he meant business and other than that long rain delay, I'm sure it was a good time for you and your sons.[tup]

Dave Haven't got anything to add to the comments regarding that LA tunnel, other than to note how good money and effort seemingly went to total waste. Happens all over this land.

Don't quite understand your civilian situation within a military establishment, so best I can say is Congrats on your impending promotion. Used to be that people were promoted not so much for what they had done, but for the potential they exhibited. To excel is the name of the game in the continuum of success (siberianmo circa 2006)!

Thanx to all for the rounds and cash for our Coal Scuttle via the Cashinator & Tilla![swg]

Leon the Night Man takes the bar at 9 PM (Central!)

Later (maybe)![tup]

Trolley Boy, i'm not the only one who is aware of the historical significence of this line, many PE fans envision a viable, self substaining tourist operation should UP decide to vacate the line.

As a bonus there are numerous active rail shippers on the route, a group could either contract a third party to service these industries or choose to themself, either way a substanial source of revenue, the curse of all perservation efforts.

Similar efforts lead to the restoration of a 1.5 mile segment along the waterfront, SP sold the line to the Harbor belt railroad who were then approached by the county and PE preservation groups, as a added suprise several cruise ship companies agreed to donate hard ca***owards the ultimate goal. Harbor belt Line stipulated that it must not interfere with day to day operations and the overhead wire must be reinstalled at a higher elevation to clear current freight equiptment.

An agreement was reached where Harbor belt would confine switching moves to the eveing hours whenever possible and they would not be responsible costwise for the installation of automatic train stop equiptment and added grade crossing protection. These request were not insurmountable and the red cars returned within a year after the restoration was publicy announced

Ridership to date has exceeded all expectations, a possible expansion is possible in the not to distant future to extend the route an additional 2.3 miles over former PE trackage Harbor Belt is considering vacating, this would tie in with a second preservation effort, the restoration of the one hundred and forty three flights of stairs that once connected the Pedro Line with Gaffey Street station, due to the terrain that station was almost two hundered feet higher in elevation then the right of way.

hey dave caught your post. Peaked my interest, no suprise there eh ? It would be nice to see that line rehabilitated, even a few miles of restored overhead could become a huge museum / torist type operation. One just has to look at the high level bridge line of the old Edmonton Radial, it ties into their existing light rail, and allows them to keep an age old historivcal structure and the cars they run on it. Turns out that it feeds the LRV line in the summer and increases the money the transit company makes. A win win situation. A similar thing could happen there in LA. If the catenery poles are in good shape it may not take as much ca***o get it running as y ou may think. We'll think positive thinks about it.

Lovedomes, I too wonder what the point is, decades ago the north portal was blasted out of existence and the roadbed and hill side gave way to a strip mall, so resumption of rail service would be quite impossible. I know it was considered for for Red line extension to valley, but rejected due to restoration cost and business/property owner opposition and no doubt questionable/misguided politics.

A much better fate has been the remaining Sub stations, one in particular almost feel victim to a road improvenment project, a concearn devoted to preservation purchased the building and property, restored it to PE in service condition, and now earns revenue as a art gallery and upscale coffee shop. Since about one hundred feet of the right of way was included in the purchase, the owners are seeking a red car for display. last I saw, rails had been relaid and the traditional palm trees next to the depot replanted, should make a interesting display when done.

Personally the remaining portion of the former Deminguez line would be a perfect canidate for preservation, UP maintains the line to class three standards and the overhead cantanary poles are largly intact, devoid of wire in the early sixties. At over seven miles it could be a viable tourist draw for the nearby cruise ship terminal and be possibly tied in with the restored water front trackage and midway as it was before massive abandoments demoted it to status as a isolated spur under SP ownership. This line is the only significent portion of the Pacific Electric to survive virtually untouched by time and progress. I would like to see it's continued existence..

Good evening Sir Tom and Cindy,a nice tall cold draft tonight I think oh and a sack o toonies for cashinator and tilla to share.

Tom you have covered the range of distances with your encores today. The IT to the CPR and several points in between all good I say[tup] It is indeed nice to know that the rendezvous is within a month now, the weather's been quite pleasant latley as well[8D] Just don't throw anything out doing those honey do's[:0][B)]Nice to see most of us on the positive double diget pluses since pg 200,as Doug said shows how speacial this place is. [bow]

Ted Don't give us heart failure like that, I suppose that you coul;d have mailed yourself here if the strike had happened[:D] Just wondering if it would have been an oversized envelope though [:-^]

Dave Nice follow up on the tunnel that never was, sorta like the Diefenbunker in Ottawa, was supposed to have been a fall out shelter for the Candian Govt in case of war but was never officially put into service, It had fallen into disrepair as well and was to have been bulldozed but it was saved and is now a Parks Canada sight.

Lars I imagine the food prices at Shea are similar to the Rogers Center in Toronto. The tickets are cheap enough but a beer and a hotdog ( streetmeat to be sure ) will run you about $12[:0][xx(] Least the Jays put the boots to Boston over the weekend[:D]

G’day Herr Kapitan and fellow travelers at the bar!

After an hour and one half of a rain delay, the Mets game finally got started. Do you know how many beers one can consume in that time[?][?][?][swg] Life is an ‘itch, huh[?]<grin>

Didn’t think they could make it 7 straight, but they did by beating the Brew Crew from Milwaukee. It was a good time, in spite of the weather.[tup] Tom Glavine is one heckuva pitcher and he really had a great six innings. I know, I know – where are the guys from days gone by who used to pitch the entire game[?] I feel the same way. But this is now and these guys are so specialized, pampered and otherwise treated with kid gloves, that I guess it comes down to what the “boss man” likes to say. “We takes, what we gets!”[swg]

My sons nearly talked me into going back for this afternoon’s game – but a clearer head prevailed. They appear to be on the way to a loss anyway! Brewers 8 Mets 2 in the 8th. Uh-oh.] That’s a long trip and I’m not able to handle two in a row any more – especially a day game following a late night ending. No thanks![tdn] That’s why we have TVs in the house, plus the price of beer at “Lars’ Place” is quite a bargain compared to the extortion experienced at Shea Stadium. Good Grief Charlie Brown!<double groan>

We had some decent seats in the Mezz boxes – paid $32 apiece for 4 tix. We took the car and that is a nightmare. My “boys” think it’s a better way to go, but for me, the S.I.R.T., the ferry, the subway and you get there just the same.[swg] But really, taking the car is no big deal – but the parking and getting out of the place is never fun.[tdn]

Just wanted to swing on by to see how things are progressing on this Saturday and it appears that all is quite well. Rob – Doug – Ted & Pete have all been in to liven up the joint, so I’d say that’s a decent morning for a Saturday![tup][tup] Nice “stuff” from you, Herr Kapitan with the Encores! Keeps things moving along . . . [tup][tup]

I’ll take a “hair of the dog” if you please – one frosty cold Schaefer in an equally cold mug, thank you. Nah – nothing to eat today – food is the last thing I’m thinking of. [wow] Those ballpark hot dogs sorta come back on you, don’t they[?][swg]<urp!>

That’s a mighty interesting piece on the PE Hollywood tunnel, Dave and it makes me wonder what the point of keeping that tunnel – a tunnel – is. I mean if there are no plans to put rail in it, and apparently no other transportation plan for it, what’s the point[?][%-)] But an interesting elaboration still . . .[tup] By the way – there were SIXTY ONE posts for the Anniversary celebration! Great, huh[?]

Here’s a ten spot for the “Lars Box” and I’ll definitely see you on Monday, not too sure about Easter Sunday though.

Happy Easter to one and all![tup][tup][tup] It’s a grand time of year . . .

Until the next time!

[8D] Greetings to all this fine day, Tom, sixty post, incredible[^][^] that calls for a round of the best Ale money can attain. Looks we had a great anniverasary, that first post of mine sure does take me back.

I haven't any hard numbers, but I suspect we me have drank several small breweries into bankruptacy with all the celebratory functions.

Well, I was informed yesterday that i'm line for promotion, conducive on that I sucessfully complete the tedious training course. Seems my Commander has serious health issues, in addition he will, within the next year be at the required retirement age.. The training course dosen't seem all that difficult compared to the training required when I was a Federal Agent , just the same can't become too comfortable.....

I'd like to expand on a reply offered by our newest member "Marthastrainyard" regarding the PE Hollywood Tunnel, true the foundation for the Arco Towers did invade the tunnel. Several lawsuits resulted from this as the the city intended to keep the tunnel clear, at the time it was being used for city storage and as a fallout shelter, but if the city rebuilt a rail transit system the tunnel would prove invaluable from a labor and time factor and be exempt from the newest bugaboo of the time enviormental studies.

The tunnel saw very little use by the PE, it was built twenty years too late. Because of the stout construction it served as a visible reminder of the glory years in LA transit long after the PE elsewhere had been paved over and bulldozed out of existence. Several years ago it once agin was the center of attention, the city sought to sell the land under the tunnel approach and several addtional acres to a developer who proposed backfilling the tunnel to seal it forever and build seventy six condos on the site.

The normally lack luster LA preservation scene, known to blanch at the thought of taking on city hall politics, rose to the occasion, filing countersuits and seeking historic landmark status. An injunction was obtained that killed the conversion plans in their tracks. A decision is still pending over these law suits. In the meantime, volunteers have cleared weeds, trash, abandoned cars, and graffeti from the site and sprunced up a newly installed fence. LAPD assisted in removing the homeless encampments, hookers and drug dealers from the area, setting the foundation for a safe family oriented park as the ultimate goal.

A engineering study found that the invasive foundation could be removed and replaced should the need to use it as intended should ever arise, the cost to restore it rail service would be substainial however..

Ok keep good Pwolf, Ted, Rob, Lovedomes, Lars and all the gang...

Keep the encore's comming

G'day!

Nearly noon and I'm done, finished, no mas! with the lawn work - always good for about 2 1/2 hours of sweat! Fortunately the temps this morning are much more tolerable than yesterday when we were sweltering in April!<groan>

See that Ted Posted pretty much at the same time as my last - didn't really have time to hang around, but I saw it! (That refresh/repost really works!)

You must be suffering the lingering effects of the 1st Year Anniversary Celebration for Pike Perspectives is recognized on Wednesdays - YOU "originated" it![swg] Anyway, I expect there will be considerable absences through the weekend. We'll survive![tup]

Glad to see ya, Pete and we'll look forward to your Pix on Sunday Photo Posting Day!. Run into any difficulties, let me know - you've got the number![tup]

Ted Appreciate the "heads up" on the RR Book Relay! - please ship off an E-mail to Pete 'n me when it's in the mail. Thanx![tup]

Pete That's interesting info on the old Wabash Depot in Columbia. Hope your Pix turned out well enough for Posting . . . hate to see those old buildings go, especially when it involves railroads.

Okay boyz, I'm back at "it" - the bride has a bunch of "Honey do's" all lined up for me. Ain't love grand[?] You betcha![swg]

Thanx Cindy for giving up your Saturday to help out 'round here. And why of course it's perfectly okay for you and your lady friends to use the back room to color eggs! Spend as much time as you like, but just be aware of Tex and Awk - they have a "thing" for eggs. One thinks they're food, while the other wants to nurture 'em!<grin> Should be interesting . . .

Later![tup]

Hi Tom and all.

A mug of the coffee and any chance of a tradition breakfast.CINDY.

Good to see you RUSSELL. I was in the car-park yesterday and heading for the bar door when the bride caught me and I had to go to Columbia MO. I did get the chance to take a couple of photos of the old WABASH depot building The station area is in use as bus depot and the building is to be renovated to its 1910 condition.[^].

Thanks for the interesting links LARS and MIKE[tup].

DOUG Hope the move goes smoothly. Liked the joke[:)] Looking forward to more Railroad Magazine stories when you can. More than welcome to the Congrats[tup][tup][tup].

TED. Good to see you again. Unfortunatly it was BORIS LEON and me who were responsable for brewering the Tex's Tail an experiment that will only be repeated on very rare occasions[:)][:-^] with Tom's permission

TOM Glad the bell has been found[^]. Enjoyed the ACL Nostalgia, all those named trains heading south for the sun, and the Illinois Terminal Encore[tup].
Hopefully I am all set to post some photos tomorrow and loking forward to the B& M and AL's birthday ba***uesday [^] PETE.

G'day!

Yes, it IS the weekend and Saturday brings with it - ENCOREs! - yard work <ugh> - Honey Do <double ugh> and perhaps a "cold one or three!"[yeah][swg]

Good to see ya again Doug and thanx for the E-mail the other day - figgered you'd be "up to your lower lip" in moving prep, work, etc. Insofar as your Permanent Stool is concerned, better check the fine print that came with the "Proclamation" - for we'll be calling upon you to help us keep this ship on course![tup][tup][tup]

Hey Rob! didn't want to forget that you dropped by, rather early - but here nonetheless![tup] We are now within WEEKS of our Rendezvous! and man oh man, doesn't that sound great[?][yeah]

Okay, here's the "deal" for today:

CINDY will be behind the bar for most of the day! I will "pop" in 'n out to make an ENCORE! Post, etc. - but that will be it for Moi!

Enjoy this day one and al![tup]

Good Saturday Morning to each and all. Tom, I really need a Stoli and tomato juice, if you please and never mind the paper parasol or garbage. I'm recovering from a frontal lobotomy resulting from the bottle in front me on Anniversary Day. Pete, you may wi***o talk to the micro brewers about the "Tex's Tail" batch.[:-^] This is a special weekend for more reasons than one. Congratulations Barndad Doug on your new found "permenancy." I know you will wear the honor well.[tup] Hi to Russell, Lars, CM3, Rob, Nick, BK, Mike and our new found "friends of a feather" Pers.

There are many activities going on this weekend, so I doubt that "Pikes Perspectives" or Photo Posting Sunday will be swamped today and tomorrow. I am greateful to have found some free moments for sending best wishes to everyone over the hoilday. The old L.V. promo was appreciated and Mike's input on the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line certainly jarred the memory banks.[^] I guess we are all looking forward to Passenger Fan Al's birthday bash on Tuesday the 18th. That will be from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. my time, so I should be able to attend "with bells on" and of course street attire as well. Tom and Rob, I got kind of a scare with the threatened Delta pilot's strike but it seems to have been resolved, thank heavens. Okay, I must get some shrubs and lawn issues under control today before the City Fathers post a notice on the front door.[swg] Right, I see the bell has been found and Nick has his teeth returned, so the pre Easter egg hunt is resolved. In that case, I shall part with a mention that the "Trains" book realy will be posted early next week to Pete. Boris, grab your clapper...ready? Let fly...BONG...now that's more like it! Happy rails and happy holiday.

Good morning Tom and all! Hokey Smokey .... a Permanent Stool para mi? Unbelievable! Thank-You kindly sirs! This is most unexpected! I'm so excited, I can barely eat!

I'll have three lite breakfasts, a pitcher of orange juice, another lite breakfast and a pot of coffee please. Now that my stool is bolted to the floor, I'll really be able to pack away the food and drink! Thank-you for the congratulations Tom, Lars, Peter, Shane (my name's not CM3), Rob and Russel! Sorry about my absence these last few days, but I've been busy working on lining up a place to move to, and get this one for sale. I apologize for the speed-bump in the usual data-flow, but hope to "get back on track" ASAP!

Looks like the place had quite the anniversay celebration the other day, once again proving just how unique this thread and the men who frequent it truely are. Well done gentlemen, and let's keep it going!

[:I] A drunk is driving through the city and his car is weaving violently all over the road. A cop pulls him over and asks, “Where have you been?”
“I've been to the pub,” slurs the drunk.
“Well,” says the cop, “it looks like you've had quite a few.”
“I did alright,” the drunk says with a smile.
“Did you know,” says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms, “that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?”
“Oh, thank heavens,” sighs the drunk. “For a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf.” [:I]

Comedy Corner

Yarns from the Barn
(from barndad Doug’s Posts)

[:I] A blonde gets on an airplane and goes straight to 1st class and sits down. The stewardess comes by and tells her she has to move to her seat in coach. She tells the stewardess " I'm blonde, and beautiful and going to Dallas." The stewardess doesn't know what to do to get her to move so she goes to the cockpit. She explains the situation to the pilot and co-pilot. The co-pilotgoes back and tells her she has to go to her seat in coach. She again says " I'm blonde, and beautiful and going to Dallas."
He goes back and tells the pilot he had no success. The pilot says " I have a blonde wife. I know how to speak blonde." He goes back and whispers in her ear. She says " Oh, I didn't know" and moves back to her coach seat. The stewardess and the co-pilot both want to know what he said to make her move. The pilot says I just told her that 1st class wasn't going to Dallas! [:I]

[:I] An elderly man lay dying in his bed when he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite sugar cookies wafting up the stairs. He gathered enough strength to get out of bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom.
With even greater effort, he forced his bony fingers to grab the handrail and he went down the stairs, one stumbling step at a time.
With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven.
There, on the kitchen table, spread out in rows upon wax paper, were literally hundreds of sugar cookies. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife of 60 years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?
Mustering one great final effort, he lunged toward the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture, his parched lips were slightly parted. The wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth, seemingly bringing him back to life.
His aged and withered hand shakingly made its way toward a cookie at the edge of the table, when suddenly it was smacked with a spatula by his wife.
"Stay out of those," his wife said. "They're for the funeral !" [:I]

[:I] A couple of Arkansas hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls 911. He gasps to the operator, "My friend is dead! What can I do?"
The operator, in a calm soothing voice says, "Just take it easy. I can help. First, lets make sure he's dead."
There is a silence, then a shot is heard . . . The hunter says, "OK, now what?" [:I]

A quick good morning to all before I head into work this am. Tom just a quick breakfast and an extra large coffee please. Tom I did indeed see the history post on 298. I though that i had commeneted on it but maybe not <halftimers>It twas well put together as per usual,I didn't have much extra toa dd so that's likely why the response was lost in the shuffle, no worries it happens. Yes the stool bolts were installed during the reconstruction phase given the near death experiances Boris's waxing produced on the 12th.

Good to see that Russ made it in and found the rest of Nick's teeth, I was worrying that they may have ended up in the soup vat. [:O]

Mike and lars some great url's gents, I will more deeply dig into them later tonight when I have a bit more time, hope that the ballgame was enjoyable Lars.

Well I must rush off everyone have a good day I'll try to pop back in later

Last call for me![swg] Leon set 'em up . . .

Here's something I just Posted over at "my other thread," but thought appropriate for a "nite cap" right here![tup]

From one of my cross-Canada trips . . .

Mt. Robson - Highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies at 12,972 ft/3,953 m.
Taken from the observation dome of VIA Rail's Strathcona Park Car - eastbound "Canadian."

Oh [yeah] - not to worry - we found the bell![swg] Seems the track gang guys were havin' a bit o' fun at the 1st Year Anniversary Celebration and thought one of his "oppostie numbers" should "wear it as a hat!" Well, that began a ruckus and the next thing ya know, it "disappeared" for a bit. Rolled outta sight back in the pool room - but was later retrived during the reconstruction cleanup!<grin>

G’day Gents!

It’s HOT! Set a record today at 92 (F) for April 14th!

Why St. Louis spring-time is so HOT . . .

... We go to McDonalds to get coffee and pour it on our laps -- just to cool off!

... The farmers must feed their cows ice cubes, so they don't give powdered milk.

... The farmers feed their chickens ice chips, so they don't lay hard boiled eggs.

... They don't bother making themometers that go below 70 degrees.

Awful, eh[?] Well, someone had to pick up the slack for barndad Doug!![swg]

Taking a “hair of the dog,” eh[?][swg] OR getting in “shape” for our May 11-13th Rendezvous!![?][swg] Either way, Keiths is a good choice![tup]

Been wonderin’ if you ever saw that Post of mine on the “April Significant Events in Canadian RR History”[?] Was back on page 298 . . . . .

Good point regarding bolting the stools to the deck – must always maintain that “dignity,” eh[?][swg]

Enjoy the Easter weekend![tup]

Nice URLs, Lars and have a great time at the old ball park with your sons. Sounds like a great “tradition” to keep going ‘ going. [tup][tup]

“Sage advice” regarding those “chocolate things” in the grass! I’m still laughing . . . [swg]

I haven’t said a thing about the bell, hoping that someone would pick up on it . . . . apparently we’ve slipped back into the “selective reading mode,”<grin> I’ll have something to say on it, but want to see if anyone can “make something out of it.”

Have a great family weekend![tup]

Interesting Post and perhaps not a Classic Trains Post, but nonetheless, worth the read.

Good Afternoon Barkeep and All Present; coffee (iced), please; round for the house; and $ for the jukebox.

Iced coffee is because we have made the transition in WV to what I call "instant summer." It was snowing here two weeks ago. Weather here is warm and sunny right now which means it'll be raining soon...........

Can't wait to drive the WV Turnpike on the way home because warm weather marks the appearance of flatlanders with !@#$% campers or monstrous wheeled condominia who get hung out in the passing lane because they don't realize that there is no level land in this part of the world. Encountering this, I use more sentence enhancers than Awk did when he got his feathers caught in the fan behind the bar. I'm sure Nick can come up with some name for that situation as he has a gift with words.

Wanswheel - I spent lots of time in St. Albans, too; how about St. Johnsbury; boil in the summer freeze for the other 10 months of the year. Then there's White River Jct and Swanton as well. For excitment, we can go watch the GT at Island Pond.

BTW, thanks so much for sharing the Whitman poem with us. Lincoln, of course, was assassinated this day in 1865.

Tom - Enjoyed the ACL ad as well. Grandma preferred the SAL when she traveled to Florida, but it was largely a function of where she went (she always said the SAL travel4d to more destinations with horse and dog tracks) - she's been gone a long time, but I still miss her this time of year as we used to go to her place, which was about 1/2 block from the New Haven's Shore line for Easter, unbeatable combination - good cooking, family stories, and lots of trains.

Lars - Enjoy the ballgame; we can't afford to go see the Red Sox play anymore; it's prohibitive for four people - and this is not even factoring in the travel expense.

Everyone have a good Easter weekend. There's lots of church activities for our family, and as others have suggested, shameless overeating.

See you all next week.

Congrats to Doug for his upgrade to Permanent Stool Status (Sniff Sniff) Is that stool made of cheese?[xx(] Must be from all those jokes.[:o)]

YEEOUCHH!! [:(!] What did I just sit on? OH, Nick, I found the rest of your teeth that Rob missed. Some of that polygrip paste stuff should help ya keef your teef in your mouf [;)]

I see Pete wandering out in the parking lot even as I speak (write). How are ya? C’mon in. Glad to see you survived Wednesday’s festivities.

A greeting wave to the others in the back room. Some yard duties await me so I gotta move-on.

Take care,

Russell

Hi Tom and everyone, a round for Doug when he gets here.

Pete, thanks for checking out the pictures of the locomotive described at Rouses Point the other day.

CM3, as you know, Rouses Point is just a few miles from St. Albans as the crow flies, so I imagine whatever the weather was there was about the weather my father experienced growing up in "The Railroad City".

Good Friday is a good day to contemplate sacrifice.

From When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom'd

"To the tally of my soul,
Loud and strong kept up the gray-brown bird,
With pure deliberate notes spreading filling the night.
Loud in the pines and cedars dim,
Clear in the freshness moist and the swamp-perfume,
And I with my comrades there in the night.
While my sight that was bound in my eyes unclosed,
As to long panoramas of visions.
And I saw askant the armies,
I saw as in noiseless dreams hundreds of battle-flags,
Borne through the smoke of the battles and pierced with missiles I saw them,
And carried hither and yon through the smoke and torn and bloody,
And at last but a few shreds left on the staffs, (all in silence,)
And the staffs all splinter'd and broken.
I saw battle-corpses, myriads of them,
And the white skeletons of young men, I saw them,
I saw the debris and debris of all the dead soldiers of the war,
But I saw they were not as was thought,
They themselves were fully at rest, they suffer'd not,
The living remain'd and suffer'd, the mother suffer'd,
And the wife and the child and the musing comrade suffer'd,
And the armies that remain'd suffer'd."
