Tom you are welcome ! It had occured to me several months back that you the doler out of permanent and reserved stools did not have one yourself. I figured that today ws the best day to unveil it for you,I hope it brings joy and relief to your undercarriage as you navigate the bar over the next who knows howmany years [tup] If anyone has desrved a permananet stool around here it has been you. Just think today's been a paty of the highest caliber, two whole pages and a bit later and the place hasn't fallen down . It truly shows the caliber if the leader and of those who frequent and follow this fine place we have here. As Ted said earlier, lets have a good round of for he's a jolly good fellow, the bar jugband will accompany. Thanks for a great year Tom, there's been more good than bad days(Z) here, and heck we are all still having fun.

[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] Happy Birthday "Our Place" It has been a pleasure being with you guys over the past year, a special kudo and a round for Tom for his devotion and perservance in orginating this forum for the benefit of those with a tue passion for classic railroading, round for the top dog[:p][:p]

I'm late, but i'm here, as you may dervive from my late posting, they cancelled my leave today, Hey, let's have a party!! I see The gang is here, including Boris, but man you got to lose the pasties!!![:0][:0][:0][:0][:0]

Happy Birthday, here's to twenty more years, where has the year gone??

Ok continuing my latest caboose theme, today's focus the Pacific Electric

During it's heyday the PE operated over eight hundered miles of freight lines and these freights were trailed br a motley collection of homebuilt and second hand hacks.

The most common were the former SP class CA1&2 of wooden construction, these were aquired when the SP deemed then too ancient to be worthy of rebuilding, in some cases they were equipped with archbar trucks and woodbeams long banned from interchange service and everywhere else the SP operated. Over two hundred and fifty comprised the two classes, making it the most common. A trait unique among the PE was the white painted ends for increased visibility. To add confusion, several pre C classes were rostered, they were refugees from the Central Pacific from before the turn of the century and true rolling antiques.

In 1938-40 ten sans cupola cabooses were built at the Torrance Shops, this allowed the retirement of a equal number of venerable examples, they were common to transfer runs that required the ability to be interchanged and survived the demise of the PE being eventually being incorporated into SP.

Five former D&RGW wooden hacks were also rostered, their unmistakeable high end cupola and forty foot length from their days as boxcars, was unlike anything rostred by the SP, they too survived until 1953 .

PE also had seventy two boxcar conversions, all from obsolote designs, the large doors were simply nailed open and a plank secured across the opening with a wooden ladder being installed to permit entry. Crews complained about the drafty and not too safe hole in the side. In response and to sooth the union ranks some, but not all were rebuilt yet again with new siding and a real door at the opening, some even had window glass installed!!! These were exclusive to the "rock trains" that orginated from the quarries along the Santa Ana river.

The final caboose purchases were nine former RF&P hacks aquired in 1950 for their cost of their scrap value. The Torrance shops closed before all could be rebuilt to PE standards so SP was contracted to complete the work, seems SP took a liking to these and purchased the lot from PE for far more then the orginal purchase price, eventually all were leasd back to the PE and these too survived abandoment and continued in local service on the SP in Southern California until the mid sixties.

Here's to many more years of friendship

To the bookends, thank-you fior your tireless efforts on getting everyone on the same page for today.the showing today is proof of your efforts 5x[tup] salutes for the two of you as well, also H&H have said that they will give you half off on fa full body rub down at their massage trailer parked by the sleeze bean patch [:O]

Good evening again Tom and everyone else that's still more or less standing. Good to see Russell and Don thanks for droping by.I hope and trust that you will all continue to say howdy and have a glass once in a while with us. I'm affraid to order the "Hammer" as I saw what the shed looked like after they tried to brew it. The Mentor villiage hazmat team still hasn't determined what it was or wasn't. I noticed several unmarked black cars suryeuing that mess as well [alien] So I think a round of "Awk's" for everyone. H&H have brought up their travelling scnitzel wagon and saurkraut vat so be warned, Mama Glockenspeils twice baked bean burittio's are only the appitizer [:O]

Nice to see the old first post Tom too nice idea, drag in the nostalgic to go along with the best edition of the gazette yet[tup] I do hope that you pull up your own permanent stool, it's the one with the gold plated hardware and the full back rest, only the best for the boss, the girls and I chipped in for it for you. You will notice that it has a back massager and heatimng unit in it as well, much better than your old briddge chair donchathink. Just think 4 weeks from now the four of us will be basking in the gloe of some good ole pub food ! Can't wait. Oh BTW a full tanker full of Steam whistle breweries best is on the siding and Boris has tapped it ! Good thing it's a loooong weekend.

Ted I'm glad that the poney express has arrived, enjoy the book.

Back in a bit.

Your Reserved Stool is still in great shape and Boris has been taking good care of it – even polished it up (too well!) for today’s festivities. Mount with care![swg]

Hello from southwest Misery. I vote for place no.1. Seems like most everyone on this thread is from the east--have to speak up for the midwesterners. I am a volunteer on a tourist railroad and other preservation groups and have liked railroads all 42 years.
I'd like a tall, cold ice water with plenty of lemon, please.

Enjoy our 1st Year Anniversary Celebration!

Good Evening, everyone! Happy Anniversary to OUR PLACE. An idea to be different has blossomed into one of the best places on the web and the only one where I'll hang out. Tom, I would like a sample tray of all the specialty beers discussed previously.
A year ago, I was recovering from a job loss caused by a misdiagnosed health problem. I found refuge behind the double doors of a little bar next to the tracks where classic trains were the topic, beer was cold, and the company was(is) exceptional. Time and computer hijinks have not always allowed me to participate as often as I'd like, but amazingly, the welcome is still as warm as the first time.
The quality of the writing and depth of knowledge of the regulars around here are second to none. It has been said and I repeat, some of our regulars could write professionally. Word weavers, they are.
Tom, I liked those specialty beers but I believe I like something a little lighter. Set me up and surprise me. How about some Johnny Cash singing Rock Island Line on Herr Wurlitzer's creation. Makes me think about E6s and E8s. Happy Anniversary to OUR PLACE, Tom, its creator, and all of us who help keep this ship afloat!

G’day Ted

You may have been AWOL, but you still “have it” when it comes to providing honeset and relevant feedback![tup] I say “AWOL” because you WEREN’T given leave!![swg] However, we all understand and if not for the grace of God – there go we.

It truly has been quite a ride to this day and it seems like yesterday when we first conversed by E-mail regarding a “situation” elsewhere that you had the courage to openly discuss. The defensiveness, et al, in the responses pretty much convinced me to begin this Thread. The cyber bar ‘n grill “approach” was easy, in that I’ve always been comfortable in “environments” where the banter is good natured while getting some serious discussions underway.

So many have contributed – some now gone – others reduced to less than reliable and still others ready ‘n willing to pick up the slack. It truly does take “all kinds,” and that we have![tup]

Toronto in May seems almost dream-like in that it’s hard for me to finally say, “In less than a month, we’ll be enjoying all the things we’ve planned for!”[yeah]

Take the high road, my friend, and know that whenever you need to come up for air, there’s “this place” where the conversations flow, the drinks are plenty, the atmosphere friendly, and the characters absolutely without peer![tup]

Later . . .

Tom [4:-)] [oX)]

Page 302, over 6,000 postings and counting, plus I just received the "Book Relay" volume, "Trains." I would say that is a pretty darned good day , don't you agree Tom? I'll have one of those "Texas Tails" Pete was on about. The others, besides the brands Tom pictured earlier, all seem to have a peculiar tint suggesting potent consequences.[swg] Thanks Rob for the book, actually, the post wasn't all that bad from Ontario to Florida. I'll be sending it along to Pete in Jeff City a.s.a.p. I "cut away" earlier than usual so I could squeeze in one more reply before the day's end. CM3, there is such a reality conveyed with your memoirs that they always "ring" that proverbial nostalgic bell.[^] Great to hear from all who have consistantly made this thread work for so long. One might comment that a year isn't so very much compared to longer exisiting topical threads. I would reply to them: What about the quality, consistancy and contiuity not to mention the cordiality? 5 X [tup] Well, I have a long way to go for catching up from my ill fated absence.[V] Still, it can and will be done, only not as quickly as I would prefer. All the great pix on this day from so many quarters nearly puts Picture Posting Sundays to shame. But, afterall it is a very special occasion for everyone's enjoyment. For me personally, the excellent pix of the great steam era locos are the "jewels in the crown." Naturally, the fluted and smooth sided streamlined cars and domes are always a "standout."

I'm really looking forward to the "Rendezvous" in T.O. to meet up with Tom, Rob and Al and get some "hands on, real time" railroading and traction fun.[tup] I know Doug, Gunns, Rob, Dan and a few others working with the prototypes must take the "real thing" for granted. But for "armchairs" and modelers the protoypes are awesome. I've been scoping some maps of Toronto and can better appreciate just what a rail hub the city is, by today's standards.[tup] Can hardly wait for "touch down" at Pearson.

I just want to add that the year April 2005-2006 is one I would never wi***o repeat. However, "Our" Place was a much appreciated refuge which made even dire developments seem to disolve away. Many thanks to all of you who made it possible. Here is to another year of health, wealth and good spirits, unique to this thread. Happy rails, Ted

Good afternoon/evening Tom and all. I'll have one of those Bathams that is readily available.

Whewwwieeee...I think I see an open stool in all the confetti and party favors hanging about. Happy 1 Year Anniversary to you Tom and "OUR" placians. School has most of my time, and since the weather is getting warmer my 'puter time is getting smaller.

It's impossible for me to catch up with all the pages I've missed since my last visit so I'll try to do as much as I can to be caught up.

Tom, nice edition of the Gazette [tup][tup][tup][yeah]. The jokes were on par [:D]

BK. Nice pics of the ICE train. I took some pix of an ICE trainset when it was on tour here in the states. I can't remember where it was going, but since it was heading West, I guess it was on its way to California.

A hearty [#welcome] to marthastrainyard. It's always great to see new cyber faces.

Sorry to those I've left out, but the wife and I have a night out planned tonight, and she's ready to go right now. I'll check in more often.

Take care and again HAPPY ANIVERSARY TO OUR PLACE

Hi Tom and all.

The party seems in full swing with visits of LARS DON TED MIKE BK and DON since my last visit and I noticed we have passed 6000 replies on our anniversary [tup][tup].

The secret of page 300.
While in the Mentor Inn brewhouse(see below) I overheard Vito the Hit devising a scheme to see the only Mentor Village bookmaker not owned by his 'family' put out of business. There were very long odds on Our Place being on page 300 on the 12th.
Anyway after putting the 'frighteners" on the regulars Vito has won the bet, the rivals betting shop is to be turned into a female Body-piercing Parlour operated by the Ladies of Perpetual Motion( piercing $20 to watch$100), and have I recieved a well filled brown envelope although most of the cash will have to go in repairing the Brewhouse.(also see below)

BORIS, LEON AND I have brewed some ales for the party[:D]. They come straight from the barrel and are made from the pure[?] water of the CAN-AM gorge. They are.

BORIS'S BEVVY( 3.7%ABV) A strange brew with a hint of [alien]in it. (it would have been stronger but Boris left the hosepipe in it too long)

[4:-)]TOM'S TIPPLE(4.7%ABV) A refreshing N. American beer. Good all year round and a favourite at Our Place.

TEX'S TAIL ALE(6.5%ABV) Don't be put off by the color. A good tasting ale, but it can creep up and give you a bite. A favourite of the track gang.

AWK'S ANVIL ALE(8.9%ABV) Green in color but surprisingly full bodied with a hint of nuts. After a few you can get the feeling of having been dive-bombed.

LEON'S LITES OUT(12%+ABV) Very dark, very full-bodied and very strong only to be taken if you have a reservation to sleep on the pool table over night.

We did have H&H'S HAMMER([?][?][?]%ABV) but the vat exploded.

[:D]We hope you enjoy the selection. I have probably spent too much time a Real Ale Festivals in the UK[:D] PETE.

Nice work CM3 - enjoyed the "read," you've got a way with words, Mate![tup] That journal of yours could possibly be worth something to an aspiring author (are you listening, 20 Fingers![?][swg]

Great Pix from the "bookends" - wonderful idea and let's keep it going. On a day like this, why not!![?][?]

Man oh man, this has been quite the day - lots to keep up with, lots to "log" in draft of tomorrow's Summary and of course trying to get a "leg up" on the Posts of my own!! Great day indeed.

Thanx to all who have taken the time and made the effort to share in the 1st Year Annivesary Celebration of YOUR cyber bar 'n grill - "Our" Place.

Good Afternoon (still morning here!!) Captain Tom and all assembled!

I must say, the pages are flying by - seems like just "yesterday" when Nick posited if we would make it to "300" by our Anniversary.

Given that this day is a celebration, let me offer up a few photos from my very limited repertoire to provide another dimension to this celebration of the "Classic Trains Bar &Grill!"

Cheers to you Captain Tom and the gang for such a fine achievement. One year on these cyber forums can be like navigating through the narrow straits of Haydes. Superb effort, Sir Proprietor and hope you are able to carry on for whatever tomorrow brings. Cheers![tup][tup][tup]

Good Afternoon Barkeep and All Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.

As promised here's something (not posted b4) from the Notebooks. Again, happy anniversary.

Of Berkshires and Roundhouse Cats

The Delaware and Hudson is an old operation, originally founded some 160 years ago as a canal company to tap the rapidly growing Pennsylvania anthracite business. Anthracite gradually succumbed to the inroads of oil and natural gas which were cheaper, cleaner, and infinitely easier to handle. After all, why shovel coal or tend a stoker when you could heat your house by flicking a switch?

Declining anthracite traffic forced the D&H to look elsewhere for business. They exploited bridge traffic (handling freight quickly between connecting railroads) and also became a major carrier of paper and forest products. Thus the slogan on their boxcars, “The Bridge Line Between New England and Canada.”

With time, the D&H became somewhat eccentric. They were not a New England railroad in the true sense of the phrase, but they acted like one. They dieselized early, replacing their steam engines with a fleet of Alco road switchers which burbled and smoked their way between Pennsylvania and the Canadian border. The somber black and yellow paint of the early diesels gave way to a handsome gray and blue livery highlighted by yellow stripes.

The Delaware and Hudson remained solvent while all those around them drowned in a sea of red ink. While nominally independent, the D&H was actually controlled by a holding company called Dereco which also owned the Erie-Lackawanna, a bloated and tarnished remnant of two once-proud railroads. Dereco was in turn controlled by the voracious and profitable Norfolk and Western, thereby creating a Gordian knot of ownership which kept the lawyers happy. Neither the N&W nor the D&H liked the arrangement, and the D&H managed to break loose and go its own way. This is when the eccentricity became more visible.

The gray and blue livery gave way to blue and yellow, green and yellow, or red and yellow, or red, white, and blue on a few engines. The old Alcos were traded, scrapped, or rebuilt to squeeze a few more miles out of them. The D&H actively solicited passenger traffic and for awhile ran what was arguably the classiest passenger train in the east. Their PAs stood out in a desert of Amtrak blandness as they operated in daily service between Albany and Montreal. If that were not enough, the Baldwin freight engines that were on the property represented a change from the Alco monolith of the 1950s and 60s.

Rouses Point, New York – especially in the winter – is at the end of the world. Rouses Point exists because of two things: the Canadian border and the Delaware and Hudson Railway. Rouses Point is the North Pole of the Delaware and Hudson. The town’s life is tied to the ebb and flow of the railroad’s traffic. The citizen’s outlook is torn between nervousness over Quebecois politics and the more prosaic concerns of trying to scratch out a living and run a railroad in the pinched meanness of the North Country.

There is still time, however to sit down to a breakfast of oatmeal, ham and eggs, home fries, toast or donuts, and coffee, before going out to work in the cold, and talk about hunting, ice fishing, or hockey.

It never seems to snow in Rouses Point. The snow is always there, like the wind and the gray sky. The snow squishes underfoot, blows in clouds around you, or sits passively; waiting for you to slip and fall face down.

So it was that I found myself in Rouses Point. The D&H has a stone station at Rouses Point, a roundhouse of uncertain vintage (with a turntable), a small fuel facility, and a yard cluttered with mangled freight cars. Winter is tough on steel.

The roundhouse is really the heart of things; if only because it is warm. People can freeze outside, but diesels need some warmth when they are not running, lest they crack a block or become impossible to start because of weak batteries and congealed fuel.

Most roundhouses are filled with dogs, but Rouses point is alive with cats. Cats of all types – friendly and unfriendly – black cats, orange cats, red cats, white cats, calico cats. You never see many of them, but you know they are in the shadows, watching you with unmoving eyes.

It’s Sunday morning, early, and there is not really much happening. The lights are on in the foreman’s office and a small group of men are inside, clustered around the stove, and drinking coffee. The talk is of sick engines and bad cars, and the continual problems that they present to their keepers. This is the sort of talk heard on any railroad. Close your eyes and you could be in Radnor, Tennessee or Huntington, West Virginia.

Over in a corner somebody is making a fearsome din while hammering on a piece of metal. An elderly RS3 sits dead on one of the tracks. She has come in from the cold for her monthly inspection. Then, on the other track, I see her; looking strangely out of place.

She emerged from the fires of Lima in time to help win the war, and then beat the best that LaGrange, Beloit, and Eddystone could offer until the inevitable end. She sat neglected for years until she was brought back to life by the very Nickel Plate shops which spurned her so many years ago. This was Nickel Plate 759 – dead, cold, and impounded because of a political dispute, To this day, I have no idea what exactly she was doing at Rouses Point – probably hiding from those who would take her back.

The lady and I got reacquainted while she slept waiting awaiting her price’s kiss. I had seen her take the railroad apart on freight and excursion trains; listened as she walked up Horseshoe in 1969. Now she was at Rouses Point. Somehow, it did not seem the same, but I felt good knowing that she was in out of the cold and the snow. It wasn’t Buffalo or Bellevue, but it was at least warm under the watchful eyes of the roundhouse cats.

Happy Anvilnursury everyone. Tom, pop open your bubbly, it's time

Here's an antique joke from the turn of the last century...

My Grandfather: "What's the difference between a man who's been to Niagara Falls, a man who hasn't been to Niagara Falls, and a ham sandwich?"

Me: "I don't know."

"Well, a man who's been to Niagara Falls has seen the mist, and a man who hasn't been to Niagara Falls has missed the scene."

"But Papa, what about the ham sandwich?"

"Oh, that's what you bite on."

(I didn't get it ETHER)

Very pleased with the effort you put forth to “shake the trees” and get such a fine turnout begun this day. Not that many wouldn’t have shown up, but I KNOW what you did, along with Rob ‘n BK really made this event a “keeper!”[tup][tup][tup][tup][tup]

Of course you’ve noted how nice your Reserved Stool looks – Boris polished it, so use the seat belts![swg]

As has been my “theme” this day, check out your 1st Post here at ”Our” Place!

Greetings fellow classic train lovers!

I bring to you some new blood at this establishment created for all who enjoy the love of Classic Trains and appreciate the interaction amongst those who have similar interests.

First, let me give you some brief background: I am not a novice when it comes to the Kalmbach Forums. I have participated in the past and had several of those stars. I gave it all up awhile ago for an assortment of reasons. My return is under a new cyber handle and I am essentially starting over.

You may check me out in my profile, but it is rather brief. I am John Larson and preferred to be called, Lars. As you can tell by my handle, I love domes! Just loved those pix provided by siberianmo Tom and the inputs by passengerfan Al. [tup] Heaven just cannot be as good as sitting in a dome car!

I have checked out this thread from pretty much the onsest of its birth and have followed each of you through the months of its existence. I also visit the thread called, "If you like Classic PASSENGER trains, visit here!" although I have not "surfaced" there, yet.

Why am I here and why have I come back to the forums? I miss the interaction and quite simply would like to know that there are some people still around who enjoy mature, adult conversation, without the absolutely nonsense appearing in so many other places.

I give you fair warning, Gentlemen, I detest rude people and fall very heavily into the camp of BudKarr & Tom when it comes to tolerance for the ignorant and inconsiderate. Those who exploit the good intentions of others belong at the bottom of the sea.

So, Mr. Barkeep - or Captain Tom - or Proprietor, or whatever else you may prefer to be called - hit me with a Jack Daniels, black label, on the rocks and I'll plunk down a twenty for a round on me!

Let's roll, Gentlemen!

Lars

Enjoy our 1st Year Anniversary Celebration – and hope to see ya a few more times!

Good to see ya made it in! Things ‘round the place are in “high gear” in anticipation of more good things to come and especially the visits from our “guys from the past!”

As you can see, Boris has kept your Permanent Stool in good repair; polished too![tup] So, have a seat and enjoy the day with us![tup]

Appreciate your comments and hope to see ya throughout the day!

Hi Tom, sorry it took me so long to drop by but Florida is a "far piece" from here. I would have taken AmTrak but I wanted to get here before June. You have a cozy looking saloon and, from the posts I've read, great clientele to boot. I won't need a lot of introductions 'cause I already met most of the neighbors in another "saloon" down the road some. I'll have a Labatts Pilsner if you please...just to cut the road dust, don't ya know? You really picked the right name: "Our" PLace. From the "laid back" friendly chats, to the slight tremor when a train rumbles by; who could ask for more? Love that bouquet of pale ale, french fries, onions and diesel exhaust too. Guess I won't be of much use on Canadian 4' 8-1/2" but I'll try to keep up with maps, etc. For now, I'll just say it was worth the trip and I'm mighty proud to meet the "regulars." Also, have a great "Ocean" trip. Bon voyage, Ted

Enjoy our 1st Year Anniversary Celebration!

By Gadfrey, what a celebrations for this first anniversary. Hi Tom, I believe there was some mention of "free" edibles in a previous post. Unaccustomed as I am for "looking a gift horse in the mouth;" I think I'll partake of the hospitality. The truth is, I will sit on a broom stick if the quaffs are free.[:O] Absolutely outstanding input from all contributors on the Illinois Central.[^] In respect for this awesome occasion, I would like to dispense with the obligatory individual recognition and salutations if I may. As many members have already noted, there was some doubt that a quality thread could pass the test of time for very long. Well, Nanya Nyanya Na Na!!! [(-D] Not only has Cap'n Tom navigated this "ship of fate" through treacherous seas; he now steers us all to calm waters and safe harbo(u)r. Let's hear a chorus of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," eh? I wi***hat I could "make a day" of this great reunion with all our so highly esteemed friends, members and guests. There are nagging responsibilities that will require a "drop in, drop out" sort of participation from yours truly.[V]

The Gazette is yet another "classic." My sides are still sore from the levity. Also, the first, original posts are a "kick" when we realize all of us were "testing the waters" with some anxiety from being "burnt" on other threads. Frankly, passing through the swinging doors into "Our" Place was much like coming inside from a hail storm.[^] The past 12 months have proven that the divergent interests of a group that is passionate over their individual specialty in the world of railroading can not only share but thrive. I can't recall any episodes of rancor or foolish animosity developing between Members. Now, how many threads can make that claim? The few "interlopers" and character assassins that made their presence known where unceremoniously shown the door by the Management in short order. I believe that (as well as the superb quality of input) has kept "Our" Place intact with continuity and, let's face it, down right good kindred spirits.

It's back to the grist mill for the moment but I surely intend to "make a comeback" later in the day. Until then, Boris take that silly pointed cap off and "hit it" for a round. BLAT.....The bell Boris...the bell! Happy rails all.

Greetings!

I'm Bud Karr and this seems to be an interesting place for me to make my first visit on the forums ........ Quite a combination, talk of trains, levity and a comfortable atmosphere. Yes, I think this will do quite nicely for as long as I'm able to connect with those who may like to talk back.

I'm not one for dispensing with the personal information, but let it suffice to say that I'm a train enthusiast in the sense that riding them is my preference to watching or modeling them. Haven't got the time for the former and insufficient space for the latter. Don't accumulate too many material things in what I do .......

It took me quite a bit of time to leaf through the pages and I see that a core of you is keeping this idea thriving. Good. You have many detractors on other forums - those who would like to do away with the type of chatter going on within these community type gatherings. Screw 'em, I say.

Set me up with a JD, double on the rocks .........

Check back later ........

BK

Enjoy our 1st Year Anniversary Celebration!

Nice PIX! Looks like you’ve established your own PhotoBucket account! Good show.[tup]

Boris has done a “job” on the stools, so I’m hearing some “vibes” that one should use the seat belts, otherwise sitting on your Reserved Stool could be hazardous![swg]
