Well howdy [4:-)]TOM & Awk,a large pitcher of Iron City with as many glasses as the company requires ( a delightful custom,which would result in bloodshed in this fair land..)-now contest time-well I`m thinking that with postings to other forums (Fora ? -what is the plural ?) your total here will be about the 750 mark........time will tell...received your E-Mail,many thanks-thought I had cropped and centered,evidently not-was sizing any better ?...by the by,enjoying the overviews of the "lesser giants"-the only roads that get any real exposure over here are AMTRAK -mostly through holiday shows on the idiot tube and the "old classics" U.P. (licensed product) and the pre-merger Santa-Fe-both of which enjoy a slightly iconic `Americana` image,along with Coke bottles,gas guzzlers,tumbleweed & diners. Although most Brits are unaware that every time they see a coal train go by they are likely to be looking at a G.M (Can) unit[ poss modified S.D.40,not sure] painted in Wisconsin Central livery,after the E.W.S parent and hauling 50` high side gons fitted with rotary-dump buckeyes....right,couple of little jobs to attend to out back,back to answer post in a bit,cheers! Glad you've enjoyed those Fallen Flags, especially since it may all be relatively new to you. Fast forward to the new age of North American railroading and the mega-roads rule. For how long is anyone's guess. However, aside from a few upstart trunk lines, we'll not see the emergence of independent haulers of freight or people unless and until there's a complete "sea change" in governmental attitude and policy. Sad reality.

I will have another gin over ice. No vermouth. Just having the vermouth well stoppered in the same room with the gin is enough. Boris, here are a pile of one dollar bills for the juke box. Glad we had it retrofitted to take paper money.

We all will miss New Orleans. It never will be the same. At McKinney Avnue Transit Authority, the vintage trolley line in Dallas, we have been trying to find out the status of the trolleys there. So far we have not been able to contact anybody. If all of their trolleys are true vintage cars and not replicas all ou have to do is to dry them out, lubricate, and put them back on the street. The new versions with printed circuit boards almost require a rebuild. I also wil miss Commander's Palace. We would get there on the trolley. Brennans and the Court of Three Sisters along with Cafe du Monde were great places. The mayor of N O has bought a house in Dallas and moved his family in. Hopefully he will bring some of the great music and food with him.

Your mention of Gunns brings to mind that he isn't the only one who has become an irregular lately. It also appears we'll be losing passengerfan Al as well, but perhaps only on a temporary basis. However, we'll go with the hand we're dealt and let it go at that ...... [tup]

He was far less than inspiring and also quite inarticulate as well, considering the position he occupies. A Rudy G, he surely isn't! Wouldn't want this guy anywhere near me in a crisis situation ........

I wondered about those trolleys in the Big Easy. Vintage generally is far simpler. For example, back in the days of vacuum tube radio transmitters and receivers, our military was in good shape insofar as carrying on should the effects of EMP occur. The printed circuitry of transistors and the like would simply melt. The old Soviet Navy maintained their vacuum tube gear, while the U.S. Navy laughed at them. Fortunately, we never had to put it to the test ...... As an old CW operator - which isn't used at all anymore in the military - one could punch a signal through the worst of conditions. Try that with voice, data, FAX on SSB and/or other methods. I rest my case.

Sorry about the Hiatus, but the new work / club work day shift has been hammering me <I rotate my work days back 1 day every 4 weeks> but never fear, I rotate again this Fri, so it wont be as much of a strain. <Right now I work two doubles, on Tues I start a mid and continue to work 8 more hrs on Wends, and onr Fri I start a mid and continue with a 8 + hr day on Sat>

BTW it "Might" be worh your time to be in ABQ during March, April 2006 we have some as yet unconfirmed "Classic" excursions Planed, no other real Info yet except I might get to crew....

I'd love to make a trip out to Albuquerque - but the timing ain't the best for me. If I were still single, I'd be there in a flash - have an old heart throb living in the area. Hmmmm - given that it's been a looooooooong time, perhaps in a rest home! [swg] No, not really - she's quite a bit younger than I. Ahhhhhh, what once was ........ [;)]

Looks like there are at least two of us, Ted who aren't thrilled about the leadership in New Orleans - if one can call it that. I recall someone telling me that leadership is the ability to get people to do that which they normally wouldn't do, and to do it without griping, complaining, and perhaps even with a smile. Rudy G has it - this character surely doesn't.

Remember that phrase (from Queen Hillary) years ago about "It takes a village," [?] Well, I'm not referring to raising kids, but keeping the motivation level up for our bar 'n grill is somewhat like that. Thank heavens we have a strong and faithful nucleus to sustain the periods of drought 'round here. I think when one takes a look at those who have been Posting on a regular basis, it should be evident who these people are. Not so much the numbers, but the quality and consistency that counts. Thanx to you and the rest of the nucleus for keeping us refereshed and alive! [tup][tup][tup]

Those Fallen Flags will continue, as they have struck a positive chord 'round here. A bit on the labor intensive side for moi, however - if it works, go for it!

On a different note, we seem to have a good number of mid-westerners as customers. Hi TOM and the boys, A double Dalwhinnie this morning after a bad night of pain...
Fallen Flags:
I model the San Francisco to Monterey area. One end of the layout is San Francisco harbor and the other end is Monterey's fishing port and Cannery Row. The Southern Pacific ran the "Del Monte" btween the two. I plan to run Short trains pulled by 2-8-0 or Rogers Ten wheelers 4-6-0. A coach, combine, baggage and maybe post office should be my heavyweight consist on the Del Monte. Am I correct there about this classic train consist? I want to run a short WP mixed train out of Oakland or Frisco. What do connaisseurs have to suggest here?
TOM, for contest purposes I say 1234 as the number of post by our undefatigable host.
Nick, no comment on John Hiatt's citation? How about the passing away of one of blues great, Clarence Gatemouth Brown last sunday? I saw him once in Montreal way back in the 80's. He was evacuated from New-Orleans but didn't survive as he was in terminal illness. Goodday all.

Good mor'n Y'all.
What the H - - -! [censored]I will have a beer. I do not want the rumor to get around that I am a tea toatler (did I spell it right?). After all it is 5 PM somewhere in the world.

The mayor of N O moving to Dallas is their gain and our loss. Another reason why we moved from Dallas city to Cedar Creek Lake 2 1/2 years ago. Cedar Creek Lake, being 65 miles southeast of Dallas, is not on the A list of the Al Quida so we feel a little safer. Also the taxes are significantly lower. No city or county hospital tax which is about 1/3 of the tax bill in Dallas. [:)]Yes, the ride in is a tear, however I only have until March 31 when I hang it up. I did get into a van pool that leaves about 6 miles from my house at the lake. The van costs about $140 per month with the variation being for gasoline. I figure that my Pathfinder that gets 16 MPG would cost $500 per month for gasoline PLUS wear and tear on it and me. Now I just sit, drink my coffee, relax, look out the window, and talk. Leave the driving up to someone else.

We are leaving tomorrow about noon for a 2 1/2 week business trip to Europe and Africa so hopefully I will be able to get one more post in before I leave. Do not know the availability of internet on the other side of the poond. If it is available I will try to communicate, if not you get a respit from my babbling.

On the TRAINS forum there is a thread regarding train brakes. One of the contributers, and engineer, added a link to a full discussion of brakes. It is well worth reading.

Good morning everyone. tom I'll nab myself a coffee and a summer sausage sammich before I head into work. Oh and a round of whatever for the rest of the crew. Thanks for the near win pize however I think I'll let leon enjoy the day / nite in the shed.[:O] As to your new contes let's see carry the two diveide by the unconfirmed [alien] Boris sitings subtract coffee shop and BYOB appearances ummm 815 [:D] Ted You are preety much samck on in your minds eye snap shot of that steeple cab. It was home built with EE running parts. I have a book called On a Streak of Lighteneing It's a rundown on street railways and interurbans of canada. We still sell them at the museum if you are interested let us know. Anyhow pictures of said steeple cab and the funeral car are in the book. As to the curved siders they we double pole double ended controls ( no loops on NS&T ) the only other oddity is that the entire NS&T city and interurban districts had interurban wire height 221/2 feet so all the city cars had plateforms fitted to raise the poles to reach the overhead. BTW thanks for adding the comments to your layout pics should make everyones reading / viewing easier.[tup] Nick Thanks for the phtot site visit. The old layout pictures are not entirly mine that was a club's layout I belonged to the scenery in question of the pictures was some work I did do there. I snapped the shots before the " big tear down " Standard old school hard shell scenery there. On the new home layiout I'm building it will be on pink foam insulation board. Good Afternoon Tom How about a CR and a round for the house.
Chris asked about the Del Monte consists under steam . The train generally consisted of a Baggage 30' RPO a couple of coaches a diner lounge and a parlor car during the heavyweight period. The SP generally assigned a Pacific or ten Wheeler to the train. Must run for now feel like a kid again having homework at my age.

I found a picture of a WP steam loco taken in 1940 at Sacramento. It is the westbound Feather River Express, however, the angle is not very helpful in determining what type of loco nor the number of passenger cars - however, looks like a baggage, an RPO and 3 or 4 undetermined heavweight cars.

Just the way the ads were worded surely makes it clear that there was keen competition going on for the passenger's dollars. Fast forward to today with the way the airlines do business, and it's very evident that they could care less - for the competition, so to speak, has been greatly diminished thanx to regulations for things like hubs, paired cities, and fares. I liked it better back then ....

Your Emails have arrived and on first review, I'd say they should upload nicely. Got in a "black rage" (your term) just a couple of days ago with an absolute jerk at our local Pharmacy. Seems he couldn't provide the phone number of the place, since he wasn't the one waiting on me! Back up ..... I turned in a prescription for my wife .... there was a need for the prescribing Doctor to be reached by phone for clarification .... I needed the Pharmacy number to give to the Doctor so they could straighten out what needed to be clarified ...... the lady Pharmacist who waited on me was otherwise engaged when I asked for the phone number - Idiot boy received my wrath (verbal) - when he came across rather offensive, he soon changed his tune when he noted that I wasn't about to put up with his BS any further. I'm 67, but I'd wipe the parking lot clean with his butt .... End of story. Doesn't happen very much - in fact it's been years since an explosion like that occurred. Must've been just the combination of negativity filling up my head these days (daze) ... OR just that my tolerance for rude and inconsiderate people has a very low threshhold ....... Nick That is a good idea about using the NO trolley line to bring in supplies but from what I understood the lines are land locked away from regular rail.Also the lines themselves are likley heavilly damaged aas they were in the heavilly flooded areas from my understanding.
