Ah, that faint smell of Fall is briefly in the air. In Florida, that means its less than 90% humidity, 78 deg. Dew Point and 92 deg. F.! Its nearly time to Hoover the garage HO and WD 40 the G outside. You guys in the "sweat shops" (Museum) must be getting a "new lease on life" with cooler temps. Tom, maybe just a Folgers dark roast "unleaded," a Thomas' toasted English, Breakstone unsalted butter and Smucker's ('scuse the language) grape preserves. Don't move, I know where it is.

Wonder who will have the most posts, etc? There is another Topic on "the best 4-8-4 loco ever built." Typically, most folks are throwing in "the kitchen sink" from Road Names (regardless of builder) to oldest and newest vintage built locos, on and on. BTW, we could use some more input for the "Ugly Duckilings." pwolfe, Rob and me have made entries. Anyone else care to throw in their choices? Some examples are: the Pensy GG-1 in AmTrak livery- -Southern Rwy (U.K.) Class Q- -A.C.L. "passionate" purple and silver (livery)- - the G.M. Turbo Train. Obviously, there can NOT be a "winner" as it is all a "matter of taste" However, we might put together the "World's Ugliest" passenger/freight consist from the entries on offer. [how about those steeple cabs, etc.]

Well, its still early but it looks like Ophelia is taking a northwest tack. My friends in Virginia and D.C. may get a unwelcome house call.[:O] If I never hear another word on the relentless "blame game" now being "billboarded" on the Katrina disaster, it will be too soon.[:(] How is this helping the "Helpless.?" Gotta go for now, see ya's soon.

Good Morning All: Monday again (seems like it was only yesterday). A round for the house and more quarters for the jukebox. It can't be the last birthday bash of the year as mine is on December 29. Anyway, comments about the Ironhorse Bar are well taken. I recall it as a place filled with Bruins fans (in various states of disrepair). The Boston Elevated yes, I am dating myself), did stop at North Station on its way to Lechmere. All of that has been and is undergoind lots of change as a result of the complete rebuilding of downtown Boston; something of great interest to those of us who work in subterranean areas. This leads me to ask a question of the proprietor (aka ringmaster) of Our Place. Are reminiscences about subways, trackless trolley, etc. allowed here?

Your decription of driving the bust to the Custom House was outstanding. I am sure your shipmates did not forget (probably for a long time afterwards). We had lots of Navy folks in our neighborhood (amny of them worked in the yard at Charlestown); good people, many with lots of WWII yarns as well.

Let's gat after it.

Lets all have a cup of strong coffee to start the week off. Boris, thanks for using the special blend with chicory from the Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. This is a great way to commerate a great eating place on the river bank. Now, if we could just get the Mentor Bakery to make some bignets to go with the Cafe du Monde coffee.

Thanks to all of you for the great posts commerating 9/11. That was a tragic day for the United States and the world. Let us hope that the world can heal form this tragedy. I do apologize for the several dropped letters in my 9/11 post. I was rushed due to company arriving and did not have the opportunity to do my usual poor job of editing. Blame it on lazy or tired fingers not hitting the keys hard enough. We need to convince the Kalmbach web master to institute a form of spell check for clutzes like me. That way we all would not look so silly on occasion. They do have a *** filter which i agree with. Unfortunately it filters out some words it should not. For exampe the filter does not like the name of my employer and the wonderful railroad library he endowed at Southern Methodist University here in Dallas. What is wrong with D e G o l y e r? ( ***lyer ). See it bleeped out the name.

The new issue of TRAINS, the one with the NS locomotive on the cover, has a picture of the original Norfolk Southern crossing the Albermale Sound on a five mile bridge. Sadly this bridge is gone. Norfolk Southern was a short line going south and west from Norfolk that was bought by Norfolk and Western. After N&W sucked up Southern they took the name of the short line. This is a true American success story. A very short short line becoming one of the most profitable Class 1s in North America. Class Act.

Speaking of the NS their bridge over Lake Poncertrain fared much better than the dual highway span, which was destroyed. From pictures I have seen the NS bridge structure survived in tact, however the track was swept into the lake. The photo I saw was of 6 crane barges lifting the track from the lake on to the bridge. I suspect that a little MOW work will be required before any trains are running. The railroads, unlike FEMA, can marshall work crews in a minute to repair any damage, be it a flood, land slide, accident or what. We need to get a few of the railroad MOW personnel in charge of FEMA. So Tom will not jump on me, the Coast Guard did yeoman.s duty. they jumped in ASAP and were rescuing people while the rest of the Feds were thinking what to do. This is the Coast Gard's forte-quick response and rescue. My had is off to them and to Tom, a retired Commander from the Coast Cuard.

Better get to work. Boris, could I have a roadie and a Bignet? I will wear the powdered sugar on my shirt from the bignet as a badge of honor.

Ted Well, I think the loco that has turned me off more than any would be my favorite - the GG1 - but NOT in Amtrak livery. So how does that work [?] Love the loco - hate the paint job! I'll try to think of a few others ...... thinking is a bit harder these days (daze)! [swg]

Many years ago, when several influential members in Congress wanted to disband our organization, we changed our motto from "Always Ready - Semper Paratus" to "In our obscurity lies our security" - lay, low, be quiet and perhaps they'll not see us. Hello there everyone. Tom, I'll take a steaming cup of joe and some plain dognuts,please. Been reading up on all the postings since my last and will try to respond.
Trolleyboy Rob, I can tell you had a great bday ba***hat was apparently quite animated. It would appear that everyone has been accounted for in one way or another. I happen to think the ACL purple scheme was quite attractive. GG1s-the only one I've seen is in STL in Amtrak paint so I'd think either original PRR scheme is great. Tom, as a truck driver I can appreciate the double clutching, one way streets, and Boston area driving. Outfit I drove for back in the 80s had a warehouse in Worcester where we'd load up for stuff to pedal before loading up for the left coast. Just about any diesel scheme from the 40s thru the 60s are classic and can't think of any too ugly. Kinda partial to Rock Island's Rocket scheme, however.
Barndad, about your post concerning the R&LHS meeting. Our local rail museum counts among its members a retired CNW engineer from Chicago who started in 69. He hauled both freight and passengers until retiring in 02. Perhaps your speaker and my friend worked together.
Theodorebear, great post about 9-11. A great saying is that those who forget history are bound to repeat it. Let's hope that terrorists do not take advantage of the USA's current state of affairs to strike again.
Towards the end of each season for about 4 or 5 years now, the General Manager of the Midland shows his appreciation for the volunteers by hosting a GM special. Food in great abundance is enjoyed and people get together and talk. The officials of the Midland operate the train FOR the members who help the railroad thru the year. As a result of my promotion to an official position with title earlier this year, I was fireman Saturday night. We operate the train to the BNSF junction right up to the derail and set up lawn chairs, eat, and watch BNSF operate the parade of trains on the Emporia sub until way past dark. That's where we were at Saturday night when Trolleyboy's party was happening.

Good evening everyone. Tom&awk I think I'll partake in a black label and some beer nuts whilst I collect my thoughts this evening. (first day back to work after a 10 dau holiday so my brains a bit mushy tonight )[:(][:p] CM3 trackless trolley's and subways should and will be a decent disscussion topic as well I think ( as tom already stated ) Thanks for the info on North station I had thought Boston's electric transit did stop there. Any of the elevated left or did the urban planners completely do away with it ?Our museum has 5 old trolley buses as well. 4 Flyer produicts from the 70's two TTC and two HSR. We also have a 50's vintage cancar brill electric bus of HSR herritage. The original plan was to build a street scape on the west end of the property and a loop of bus wire but as with most things time and money for a vollenteer group it hasn't happened. I'm not sure if any of them are functional at the moment. The flyers all were when we got them in the early 90's. Of note BC transit in Vancouver has completely rebuilt and enlarged their trolley bus routes [tup][8D] Ted I thought of an ugly steeple cab for you. OSR { ottawa street railway } had an octanganal cabbed steeple cab ( English electric ) quite odd. Also in the grusome catagory the Montreal system ran a funeral car all black with some gold filagree on the front and back. But get this it's wheels were painted white. pwolfe I think i found the answer to your south american sub question. I beleave Chile had 3 or 4 oberon class but ot was Brasil that had the French daphne class they looked similar and were of the same vintage construction wise ( mid sixties )Well gents I'm a bit tired so I'm off fer now. Hi back again already I told you my brain is mu***oday[V] Ted and everyone interested. I posted a few new street railway shots I dug from the HCRY archieves. Several shots of Niagara St Catharines and Toronto cars ( NS&T) A couple of their interurbans and a couple shots of their 300 series Cincinati curved siders used in city service in St Catharines ON and Niagara Falls On. Also a couple shots of some Montreal and Southern Counties machines including our museums car 107 in service during the 40's and 50's.They are on pages 6 and 7 of my railimages account ( click on the link under my signature } Also page 6 has the expnaded shots of our Freindly manager's Ted's layout. EARLYDIESELS About half way down page 96 Tom kindly posted some pics of mine of Green Bay museum one of the photos is of a GG1in Pennsy livery .

THEODOREBEAR A little bit more on the Q1's. They were a class of 40 engines of which 1 was saved. I was fortunate to have a ride behind it when it ran on the Bluebell railway in East Sussex. It is part of the National Collection and it is now in the National Railway Museum in York. Two railroad authers at the time said of them "indescribably horrible" and "bizarre in the extreme" while one loco chief engineer asked "Where the key" [(-D] Still they were theU.K.'s most powerful 0-6-0 locomotive.

Tom Thanks for the info on the Southern Pacific. Were most of the long distant trains named over here [?].

Mornin' Tom and all present at this ungodly hour.[zzz] Just a Piels please (of Bert and Harry fame) to "put out the fire," ahh thanks. Rob, the added photos are excellent. Question: were the "curved sides" Cincinatti Cars (#303, #311)originally "double pole" cars? I seem to remember pix of their system where the cars had parallel poles on both ends, but I could be wrong. There was a "funeral car" in K.C., MO and it too was out of some Gothic horror tale. The octagonal "steeple cab" beggars imagining.. Right now, "the mind's eye" sees a middle ages castle turret on wheels.[V] Now 'dat' gotta be uuugly! What could the Builder be thinking?

pwolfe, from the discription and "Authors comments" on the Class Q, I can only try to visualize a 0-6-0 from the very "bowels of Pugatory."[:O] HeyNick, know the "feeling" when 5 reeds, 5 bones, 5 trumpets, piano, bass, drums and guitar really "hit" as one. We did some "time charts" (7/8- -11/4- -12/8- -9/4, reps.) with Hank Levi at Towsen State, MD.! Its like being put into a sonic "envelope" of perpetual motion...no escape! Really "Dig" it man..."digit, digit, digit!"[^]

Earlydiesels Dan, yeah there ain't nothin' much nicer than a GG-1 in pin stripes. But, she's a Jekyl and Hyde in anything else.[:O] Hope you're arent "pullin' my chain" on the ACL livery? ***, sure appreciate your comments on Southern Rwy. I'm modeling after that Road in HO. Aha, CM 3, so you really were born and not composed from a Bard's quill.[swg] And, oh yes Tom, my first encopunter with the downtown Boston "rotaries" put me on the BM R.D.C.'s from then on.{:O]

Good Morning all: Fill the thermos, please. Round for the house and quarters for the jukebox. Tom- I throw myself on the mercy of the court (now there's a scary thought). Sorry for violating the house rules; 59 (I think...see I forgot, already) .

Thoroughly enjoyed the SP posting; one of my "short list" of truly missed fallen flags. SP equipment mostly BIG Alcos) showed up now and then on the L&N when I was living in Nashville. L&N had some large Alcos, too, but they didn't get to Nashville that much, so appearances of these beasts in any livery was sort of out of the ordinary. Anyway, it was quite something to watch three SP Alcos head out of Radnor on a freight; smoke, oh my God!

Engine service folks in Nashville told me that the L&N "picked them up" in New Orleans to run off mileage which had accumulated on L&N power which went over to SP. The L&N guys used to complain abt. what happened to their equipment when it "vanished" onto the SP. It would come back in pretty sad shape, missing accessories such as radios, etc. I also heard similar complaints abt. power that wound up on the "all black painted road which shall not be named."

We did see much, if any, SP passenger equipment through Nashville until Amtrak came along. Then stainless equipment sublettered for the Sunset Limited appeared. I dug up some of my old notebooks and found references to SP sleepers, coaches, and diners on the Fast Flying(?) Floridian. The diners still had SP dishes, etc. so riding on them was a little different than the SCL equipment which usually ran on that train. I'll have to see if I can find my pictures of this stuff.

The August, 2005 issue of the New Haven Technical Association's Bulletin appeared in this a.m.'s mail; an long article abt. the UA Turbo Train leads off. Lots of good pictures in there - the most interesting of which is a shot of the Trurbo at New Haven with an RS3 and some Osgood-Bradley coaches in the background. IOW something for everybody.

Those Boston "rotaries" weren't the problem so much as the drivers! [:O] Most aggressive, inconsiderate and accident prone that I've ever had the displeasure of encountering - anywhere. To this day, whenever I detect a "Bay State" license plate, I cringe at the prospects of what may come ......... [tdn]

Didn't take too much to get me aboard those RDC's .... [tup] B&M surely had a nice fleet back in the time I was up there. [tup]

So, you've taken a liking to the "outlaw" image - somehow, that simply doesn't jive with the manner in which you communicate. Neverthless, if you want to be known as the Desperado of "Our" Place, that can be arranged.

CM3 Okay, you're in the next revision to the Birthday Watch List - December 29th - 59 for CM3 [yeah]

Glad you liked the SP information ..... I recall seeing a couple of SP smoothsides and stainless cars hooked up in a consist heading to Boston, through New London, CT, back when Amtrak was taking over. Just couldn't get over the absolute disarray of liveries - UP - SP - PRR - NH - and some others. Broke my heart to realize that the days of those wonderful matched consists were over. Change can be kinda like a case of hemorrhoids, just can't sit still for it! [swg]

Don't know why, but I've always liked those RS series of loco's .. RS2 in NYC livery kinda sticks in my mind. But then again, anything with that lightning bolt scheme just "worked" for me! [tup]

Hello everyone. Tom, a cold house draught, please. I'll walk over to the jukebox and punch C5 and go from there. Tom, my favorite locomotive to run on the Midland is a New York Central RS3 painted in the lightning stripe scheme. It still has the remains of the steam generator in the short hood--something in there rolls around like a bowling ball at certain speeds!!! One of the cylinders needs gone thru so she has'nt ran this season so I am seriously having withdrawals as she is a barrel of fun to run.
I liked the Mop listing for the fallen flags. Mop was the underdog in Springfield as it was the end of a branch from Crane. When I was a wee lad, Mop kept 2 geeps and a endcab switcher here. The geeps would take the freight of evenings to Crane and the SW would work days switching. Around 1975 or so, the federal govt made Mop abandon its branch so theline was torn up and the freight went out on the Frisco to Aurora, which is what BNSF does for M&NA today. Mop's Bicentennial geeps made an appearance in town wearing their fancy dress once. In steam days, motorcars and passenger (and mixed) trains ran from Crane to Spfld passing thru towns where there are no signs of a rr ever being there. Mike Adams wrote a book back in the 80s about this part of Gould's old empire.
Yes I do like the old purple and silver ACL colors. It looks real snazzy on clean long nosed Eunits. SAL had a winner also with its citrus scheme, which was also a product of EMD's styling dept. SAL had the only E4s and they had pullout nose doors and that weird 7bulb headlight. When ACL and SAL got together in 1967, both of these beautiful paint schemes disappeared under black. I remember SCL hoods detouring thru Spfld in '73 because of floods down south. Kinda partial to these 2 roads as my folks spent considerable time in Florida and just happened to be living there when yours truly was born. Mom said the SAL passenger crews were always real nice and helpful while ACL crews were the opposite. In her younger days, she would catch Frisco here in Spfld and ride as far as Frisco went and then caught either of these other 2 roads.

Hi Tom, another Piels please, thanks. Good ole MoPac, used to see a lot of 'em around K.C. The Eagles had a fine livery of design and colors (my opinion). Yeah, gotta agree with the comments on the Bean Town Bumper Cars. On the way to Beverly (North Shore Music Theater) an "Air Head" came "end for end" across the center median (Rt. 127 north) and hit my '57' Saratoga 4 door hardtop head on. Glad I was in a heavy car.[:O] The only competition for the New England Barney Olfields I've seen is in Puerto Rico[xx(] Take to the sidewalks if you're driving your own car.[8] [#offtopic]

Just a "shot in the darkTom," I'll say 1200 posts eminating from the Propietorship. ***, there are so many places we will miss in New Orleans, until reconstruction, Cafe du Monde being among them. The La Louisian coffee could take the enamel off your teeth but the pastries were superb.[tup] I'll certainly miss Dan's Pier 500, The Famous Door, Preservation Hall, Arnaud's, Court of 2 (3?) Sisters [by the time I got there I was "3 sheets to the wind."] and of course the venerable Pearly Thomas Trolleys. CM3, I should hope to shout that "trackless trolleys and subways are "fair game." Do you know the old "Red Birds" (N.Y.C. systems) are available in HO? The P.C.C.'s on what is now the "T" always struck me as out of sync. but then, what do I know. Too bad the trolley bus came to the same grief as the street cars. Further proof, to me, there was a clandestine, orchestrated conspiracy for clogging the Nation's city streets with smoke belching, noisy motor busses lumbering in and out of traffic with perilous effect.[2c]

Let's see, "6 favourite classes of locos, cars and trolleys, etc." Pwolfe, by Gadfrey you have soemthing there.[^] Its back to my library of V.H.S. tapes and books to be sure I don't leave any species unchecked. BTW, don't know what ever happened with that game of Skittles? I'll try to get back on this slow Tuesday, if possible. Until then.

Ted Never drove in Puerto Rico - but I must admit, it did seem rather crazy. But, that was a loooooooong time ago. Ah yes, good old Route 127 - man oh man, do I remember it well. A speedway for sure and good training for one's reflexes! [swg] Now, the period of time I'm referring to was from 1968-'73. Drove an assortment of vehicles duirng that period - let's see: ' 67 Dodge Coronet Wagon - '69 VW Squareback - and ' 71Plymouth Satellite Wagon. One car family back then - subsistence existence, if you will.

Okay, you're in with 1200 as your guesstimate for the CONTEST. Remember, guys - we need a minimum of six in order to play! C'mon .......

Oh the talk about New Orleans and what will be missed really tweaks my memory banks. As I've indicated earlier, I spent quite a few nights in the Crescent City. The Cafe du Monde was one of my favorite places for morning start-up. Someday - perhaps at the Rendezvous in Toronto - I'll share some stories regarding a "bust" or two that took place there (not the female type!). [swg] I'm familiar with most of the places you cited and have to say that I never had a dull moment in the Big Easy, not-a-one.

If my model railroad could be expanded for a larger city scene (which it cannot), I'd sure consider some PCC's, which of course would make Rob's traction heart go, clickety clack! Anyway, right now, I'd dearly love to find a couple of modern day - North American - city transit buses in HO. They ain't available - not a one. Oh well .....
