Good evening Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!
Leon, I would like a juicy Filet Mignon with lots of mushrooms! Since Nick is somewhere in the building, maybe he could cook it? Yes, a cold Keith's, please.
Finally got some time to pay a visit to my favorite place by the siding, Our Place! A pretty nice day here this Saturday.
Rob – Thanks for the answer! I’ve been flying over Sault Ste Marie many times, last time was last Sunday. Hard to see any details from 37,000 ft though. Tom – Gas up 30 cents! Wow! Here it hasn’t moved at all so far, still around $3.40. I better get some gas tonight. I know Lars knows how to wake you up, I just had to give something back. I understand you now, what I missed. In my very narrow world the new day starts when I wake up in the morning (whatever time that is). Yes, I also wish that I could get a ride in one of those old, good looking, Zephyrs. But I am afraid those days are gone. My favorite planes flying across the pond are Boeing 767 and DC-10 (MD-11). That little locomotive is, as far as I know, a fantasy creation. It is a real steam locomotive running on a (about) 7” gauge track. Its just for fun rides and I just happened to drive by and stopped when I saw it.
The steam locomotive.
There is also another locomotive, a gasoline powered one. Nice collection of photos! My favorites being AlaskaRR at Denali and the old Observation Dome car at Montreal Central Station! I have to remember to win the powerball so I can take that trip across Canada in old Budd cars! Pete – Yes, it happens every now and then that too high vehicles are hitting the overhead barrier and, sometimes, also the electric wire. The barrier is about 1 meter (39”) lower than the wire. In Sweden, like several other countries in Northern Europe, they use 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC to power the trains. I don’t know where that little locomotive was built. I have to do some research. Nice photos from Alan as usual! I have a V100 model and also a model of the car next to the V160 locomotive. It looks like Alan took the pictures in the spring. I am not sure where in Germany Meinerzhagen is. Thanks to Alan!Nick – I guess I would prefer to be in the UK if I have to see lipstick on a pig! Hmm. Do you know what happened in the chunnel? What caused the fire, etc?
Eric
Evening gents-Leon-a round of brandies to wash down the beers everybody else has bought-just a quick `bookmark` whilst I catch up...
Apologies for missing yesterday-was a matter of priorities-was mine & missisnicks 19th anniversary -also we have her mum down for the weekend-not enough hours in the day I`m afraid
Notes from the real world-I think events in New York have been eloquently and adequately covered by those best suited to so do.......Chunnel fire is apparently now out, although have had no word of services being resumed-extensive safety checks still required..........Grim news of Ike ripping up Texas.......Equally grim tidings of metro train wreck....On a lighter note,in these parts, lipstick on a pig generally indicates that someone is looking at a hot date.....
Back in a bit
G'day Gents!
Aside from Pete, our Bar Chandler, dropping off a two-fer with some fine Pix, this place is typically slow on this Saturday in mid-continent USA.
We're hot, muggy ‘n waiting for "the other shoe" to drop as remnants of Ike are heading this way . . . Juneau knows something's "up," for he's staying close to the house . . .
Figure I'd put this "up" ‘n call it a day . . . going out this evening for the finale of our summer theatre for this year. Tonite is "The Music Man." Seen several times "live," but always a winner.

Hi Tom and all.
Back again CINDY with the rest of Alan's photos from Germany and another Bathams please.
Another photo of No. 8 a bit further along the freight only line.
The special train reversed at Meinerzhagen onto another freight only line.
The line serves a quarry, but the line is threatened with closure. Looking the other way from the last photo this is former station at Krummenerl with No.4 in the background.
Another view of the former station at Krummenerl.
Well CINDY it is amazing how well the free Bathams is going down so another one please.
Pete.
A little early but seeing as it free beer again and to celebrate the Mighty Shrews 7-0 win I'll have a Bathams please CINDY.
ERIC Yes it was my first flight across the Atlantic and back I had a 777 although the TV in the back of the seat did not work on one of them. I will probably feel the same way about flying when I get back from my trip.
Have you heard of any high vehicles hitting the overhead electric wires in Sweden, not a good thing I would have thought.
The electric power in the centenary in the photos is 25, 000 Volts single phase A.C.
Many thanks for the photos. I think the small steam locomotive ‘Brasken' could be a locomotive of that name that was built in early 2006. It has been on the Exmoor Steam Railway and the Rudyard Lake railway in England if it is the same engine.
ROB Glad you enjoyed the photos. Those electrics were certainly good locomotives for BR, with English Electric electrical equipment. Like the Geeps there are still a few of EE class 37s hanging on in there in Britain, even some of the 50 year old class 20s working for DRS.
Yes I could get used to this free beer and food at the bar, hate to think what my bar tab will be like when I get back from my holiday, rising interest rates and no wages to pay it off, but I am sure there must be a scheme for paid holidays at the bar.
TOM They are forecasting about the same amount of rain for us here, but there again they said we would get about 3 to 4 inches yesterday but we got nothing, hope they are wrong about the 6 inches.
Glad you liked the photos yes I too prefer the steamers but I am really glad I took those diesel and electric photos as it is surprising how quickly the rail scene can change.. Although it might be possible to see a class 60 and if lucky one of the few 86s left at the same place, the passenger trains are all Pedilonos and class 66s on the freights.87101 is no more having been scrapped.
The Thyristor Control was a form of electronic switch to control the power to the traction motors, which I believe was fairly new when the 87s were built. The other 35 class 87s had a Tap Changer transformer and rectifiers; perhaps Eric can explain more about this.
It is good to know the Western Fusilier is one of the Westerns preserved, it is owned by the National Railway Museum at York, are you sure it was not a Bronx Cheer.
Sounds a good plan for my visit the membership card is in the wallet.
I have some more photos from Germany from Alan On the special train there was a photo stop between Marienheide & Meinerzhagen.
These two feature No.8 which was an ex DB class V160 No. 216.
The other locomtive on the special train was No.4 an ex DB class V100 No. 211.
The photos were taken on a frieght only line which apparently is to close soon. The limit of passenger operation is Marienheide.
Well CINDY the computer seems to be getting slower at loading the pics so I'll have another free Bathams and post these 4 photos and back in a while.
<CP Rail M-630 at ExpoRail - personal foto>
The smell of freshly baked pastries ‘n brewed coffee fills the air at the Saloon by the Siding on this Saturday! Time to check out our <light> ‘n <traditional> breakfasts too . . .
Petrol has jumped 30 cents to $3.70 <rounded> ‘n is expected to top 4 bucks real quick, perhaps even make it to a fiver before all of this business with Ike is over.
Weather predictions now has the remains of the storm system passing directly over us on Sunday <tomorrow> with the possibility of 6 inches of torrential rainfall along with sustained high winds. Ought to be a loveRly day ‘n nite . . . batten down the hatches, Boris, we're in "it." <yikes> Gotta man the "diaper brigade" as well, for undoubtedly there'll be water coming through the basement bulkhead . . . <arrrrrggggghhhhh>
Estimate for the "fix" came in just about where I figured - I bought a car for that price <once or twice>! <censored> But, watchyagonnado, eh
Truly a treat having our Senior Manager <Emeritus> on board once again, if only for the Monthly Remembrance of the founding of this joint called "Our" Place! Sure knows how to shake things up! <uh oh> But hard to argue with his points . . .
Comments from the Proprietor
It's "You Post, I Post" at the Bar by the Ballast!
Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative):
Friday - September12th <all times Central daylite>:
Page 19 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 8:30 AM <9:30 AM EDT>: Oh yeah, I surely did check out ALL of the RDC Pix at that great site you recommended. Absolutely wunnerful stuff . . .
Did read about the Chunnel fire with that freight along with the disruption of service for stranded rail passengers at either end . . . a mess fer sure, fer sure. Aside from a wall collapse, fire in the tunnel surely can <and did> ruin one's day! <yikes>
Also a tragedy out in SoCal with that Metrolink ‘n freight train collision. Some rather graphic fotos have been on the tube . . . loss of life in that one. <sad>
Do appreciate your support for this place along with the QUARTERS ‘n ROUND! However, since the drinks were on the house on Friday, our Monthly Anniversary - your money will be carried over to today <Saturday>!
Page 19 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 9:08 AM <10:08 AM EDT>: Nice threesome of fotos from our Resident Ontario Connection on our Monthly Anniversary day!
Wondering WHAT that NS duo is called
One of these days <daze> there's just gotta be a way to experience the Algoma Central's passenger train for the full route <round trip of course>. Getting to it from here is surely a challenge, fer sure, fer sure. Now that the family coffers are to be depleted of a significant amount of treasure <thanx to that blankety-blank wall problem> it will be awhile before expendable dollars get amassed for things like FUN! <groan>
Thanx for thinking of us!
Page 19 - Lars <LoveDomes> at 10:45 AM <11:45 AM EDT>: And another "easterner" has been heard from - this time our most revered Senior Manager <Emeritus>!
I thought of you on the 11th, as the televised shots of the ceremony at the site was being aired. I guess as the construction proceeds, the day isn't that far off when the "hole" will no longer be there as the foundation work ‘n lower levels of the project begin to take shape. Don't know how many times I've thought about flying to NY City just to pay tribute to those lost . . . but always change my mind in favor of my way of reflecting here at home. A most somber day, as you put it. I'll surely never forget AND totally concur with your comments regarding how we must win the war against those H-bent on engaging in the most cowardly of acts - terrorism.
Hadn't seen a Knickerbocker ad in awhile - I do recall that particular one of yours though put up at the bar back when we had JanOlov appearing regularly with his whisky/whiskey bottles! <grin> Hmmmmm, now there's a name from our past. A guy who just flickered out like the snap of two fingers. Not so much as a courtesy Email . . . just gone-zo. Takes all kinds, eh
Many thanx for the link on the SI Ferries . . . brought back some fine memories, especially looking at the Pix from the older boats that I used for many, many years. Was always a treat. No more cars though - I knew that, but just had put it aside in my feeble mind. Guess with the Verrazano-Narrows bridge, the handwriting was on the wall for that service to cease. Gawd how I hate to think of "our" island getting "ruined" by that connection with Brooklyn. <censored> Anyway, Spirit of America boat surely was a treat to see - most special of all, fer sure, fer sure!
Only YOU <The Platters> can "say it" the way "it" needs to be said! ‘nuf said!
Really enjoyed viewing your book covAHs once again at the bar! No problem with the Rule of Six Suspension - at least you have my "okay" to do so - now ‘n then! <grin> And you kept them all within reasonable bounds. We all know about the "loading" issues being brought to our attention because of too many Pix on the Page.
I liked that Jersey Central covAH the best - looks like the Raritan River bridge, eh
Many, many thanx for keeping us in mind - and YES, I do get a little "rattled" when I see guys logged on for hours at a time without visiting. Don't know why that is, other than to say it "forces" me to sit here - waiting - for something to get Posted. Kinda like a "magnetic" attraction, I suppose. <yikes>
Hope we get to enjoy your presence in the not to distant future - I know RUTH surely looks forward to it! <uh oh>
Page 19 - Pete <pwolfe> at 2:06 PM ‘n 3:51 PM: "In" with a two-fer on our Monthly Anniversary day! Looks like you were not only spared the price of a tankard, but also the food was free as well! A good day for our Interim Governor General!
Fine shot of GWs 6024 snaking its way to the mainline!
Electrics look good too, but ya know - I'd rather see those monster steamers! <grin>
In your latest list of 10 names, Fusilier kinda stands out for Moi! And yes, the cheering was almost audible in advance of your Posting of ‘em . . .
If all goes well, I'm thinking we'll "do" the TrainWreck on Thursday - then the Barriger Library along with the StL MoT on Friday . . . don't forget your MoT membership card!
Figured you'd "get it" once those Zephyr names came up . . .
Tickleberry - now there's a name for a tunnel inhabited with bats! <yikes>
What's Thyristor control Curious mind needs to know . . .
Methinks you may be on to something with that innovative idea to power your aircraft over the pond . . . <uh oh>
I'd surely have to consume at least 4 or 5 pints of ale before attempting to pronounce any of those "funny" names that we've been seeing at the bar. <triple yikes>
Many thanx for your always inclusive efforts along with the descriptions accompanying your Foto spread.
Page 19 - Eric <EricX2000> at 6:38 PM <4:38 PM Sandbox time>: A daylite visit from our Sandman! Now that's the way to do it - surely keeps things alive ‘round here - just in case we have someone stopping by to keep the conversation flowing . . .
The time of your previous Post was 12:05 AM on the 12th <Sandbox time> so methinks the Larsman gotcha!> However, not to worry, if there's anyone ‘round here who has put forth all kinds of memorable remembrances of our anniversaries - it's been YOU! Lars just loves to jangle one's chain - he does it soooooooo well, eh <grin>
And oh yeah, I <gotcha> too with my comment about "missing something" . . . BUT do understand that when you began typing your submission - it was indeed BEFORE the new day . . . however, technicalities have sent many a person to their demise OR set ‘em free, depending on which side of that coin one is on. <uh oh>
Always like that Zephyr shot at the MoT . . . must've been a treat to travel those trains, eh My guess is you're thinking of the cab, whereas I'm "in" the coaches . . . <grin>
Yeah, the Exposition Flyer drumhead is my favorite of that string as well!
I found the 777 just too big of an airplane for my liking. The bigger they are, the harder they fall is the way the saying goes! <uh oh>
Curious mind wonders about that last foto of yours????? Where was that shot taken ‘n what is it???? Real or model???? What's the purpose of it, is what I'm driving at . . . .
Many thanx for your most inclusive comments ‘n support for "Our" Place!
Page 19 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 8:51 PM <9:51 PM EDT>: Our Manager has returned to the scene of the crime <aka: bar> with some good cheer ‘n company for Leon, Boris ‘n the H&H "gals.".
October 1st is right around the corner for our Gordon Lightfoot concert! This is the one where we donated some bucks to our Public Broadcasting Service <PBS> ‘n received two tix "up front" for the show. Really looking forward to it - love the man's music.
I think you, Lars ‘n Moi have a most difficult time of it when the subject of our being treated so shoddily comes up. All I can add is that we are guests here - it's free - ‘n we must "play" by their rules, even if they happen to be skewed from time to time . . .
Looks like the Larsman has a way of getting right to the point, eh <grin> Take it from me - it's simply the "way" many people from New YaWk are - direct. <triple grin> I've been away for over 40 years, so perhaps that aspect of my personality has been watered-down. But every now ‘n then . . . <uh oh>
Glad to know that you're not letting our Bar Chandler get away with anything! <see, YOU are doing a "Larsman" on HIM!> Anyway, keeping tabs on his compound interest is helping us retire our debt ‘round here! <Ka Ching> <KaChing>
Regarding "my other Thread" - I think what I'll do is Post a Pix now ‘n then, just to keep it "up" on the first Page . . . don't want it to "slip" to oblivion as "Our" Place III has. Of course, once the LOCKMASTER "does us" with that one . . . oh well. <barf> But, for all intents ‘n purposes <dontchaluvit?> Translasted: For ALL in TENTS ‘n PORPOISES! Anyway, where was I Ahhhh yes - my active support for that Thread is over, surely not seeing any return on the investment in time ‘n effort. Conversation much better ‘n appropriate right here.
Fine inclusive offering on our Monthly Anniversary Evening . . . appreciate your 2nd visit ‘n support for "Our" Place!
Reminder: Cindy has the bar from 9 AM until Leon the Night Man comes in at 5 PM ‘til closing.
Dinner begins at 5 PM so come early ‘n often!
Boris, serve ‘em all of the "spiked" OJ they can handle!
Good evening Leon , I see that you are still running about taking drink orders , happens when the boss opens the vault and offers free libations , doubled by the Senior managers pention for pre paid food ( at least we got paid for it though at the very resonable sr managers discount ) So with that said a Keith's and large pizza with all the trimmings.
Tom-Good to hear that after many a try you've found someone to fix the wall properly Though unfortunatly it will deplete the ole retirement fund somewhat could be worse you could be right in the way of Ike.They've gone out on a limb and posted flood warnings for most of southwestern ontario Sarnia to Toronto in case the strom drops a pile o rain on us on sunday when it's supposed to arrive over head. Where did I put that oil skin Some great reading from da archieves as well sir
I try not to look at the active topics it makes me ill still to see how we've been shafted, yup my toughts no one will change that.I'm sure the lockmaster will enjoy that coment.
Lars-Good to see you again sir and you were in with some fine fine books.A little bit there for everybody which is A1 top notch stuff.Very generous to spring for the food on this montiversary as well
Neat link on the new ferries as well. It's nice to see that the risde is free not that the nickle was anything to complain about ( I'm sure some people would though )
Ontario is heaven,Northern Ontario is definatly Gods's country,I do intend to retire there eventually . I'm what you call an oddity,I'm as fiercly loyal and pround of my country and home Province as most American's are of theirs. But you knew that already,I can always count on you to rattle my chain
Pete-Some fine looking shots from "over ome" I've always liked the geeps , first gen power in general. It's amazing how much work they still ring out of these old diesels.
You must be in heaven with the free beer and food, your tab for once will not increase in size ( other than the daily compound interest )
Eric-Coupe more neat neat pictures, love the shot of the Zepher. The Agawa Canyon is in North Western Ontario. You start at Sault Ste Marie and the train goes north west for four hours.
Rob
Good afternoon Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!
Hello Leon, you look kind of tired! No, I'll have a sugar cured ham sandwich on rye, please. A free Tuborg Gold to that!
Happy 41st Monthly Anniversary!
Another busy day in the desert. I have decided to post my catch up post on Sunday. I'll drop it in the mail slot. Alan – I believe you. I just thought that no one possibly could spell a name like that correctly. I would lose track of where I was after typing half of it. Tom – Thanks for the drinks! We all have senior moments, I have them several times every day. Now I remember, we (the brunette and I) saw that guy standing in the corner watching us at St. Louis Union Station. He actually looked a lot like you! Hmm. It was in June 1993! Did I miss something? Hmm, now I am very confused. Doesn’t take much to get me to that point. Hmm. Let’s see... no, I am afraid I need a hint.Interesting facts on Burlington! including a nice looking book cover, The Pioneer Zephyr! They certainly had quite a few Zephyrs running in all directions. I like the Exposition Flyer drumhead!
Museum of Transportation, Kirkwood, MO.
CM3 – Yes, most grade crossings are set up the same way as in my photo. The gates usually goes all the way across the street/road. Rob – Do you pay the bills? It just cost a lot of money. Three nice photos of some veteran diesels! Algoma Central and Agawa canyon, what province? Lars – Nice to see you again, sir! I agree 100% about yesterday (911) being a very somber day. Watched the History Channel for a few hours. I remember that day like it was yesterday. My trip to Sweden is over and I am back in the desert. We had some bad dust storms yesterday evening. Nice collection of book covers from Larsman’s Moblile! Especially one book looks very interesting, Morris County Traction Company. Looks like a streetcar on the run in the middle of the forest. I did not mention the montly anniversary in my post last night because for me it was still yesterday and I wanted to save it until this afternoon when everyone is awake (hopefully). With only Leon and me present and awake there isn’t much celebration going on. Pete – I have never been in a 777. Would love to fly one sometime in the future. Pedals? I wouldn’t be surprised. Each set of peadals could be hooked up to a generator to generate electric power that could be used for outside propellers helping the plane during take off. Good idea! 90 MPH with 5’ drivers, that is pretty good. Fly to North Wales? Hmm, I think I have had enough of flying for this year now. The overhead barriers at the grade crossings are not very sturdy. They are supposed to give if something hits them. It’s a warning that there is danger ahead. Interesting photos of those electrics (and diesel electrics)! What is the voltage in the catenary?
A smaller loco of unknown class. Steamed up and ready to run.
Back again RUTH the free beer it is hard to resist.
TOM Many thanks for the Fallen Flag on the Burlington Route. I see the BN still had 10 steam locomotives in 1963,which I guess was quite late for a class 1 railroad. I see what you meant about some of the Zephyr named trains, The Morning Zephyr and the Afternoon Zephyr served different destinations from Chicago. I think the Exposition Flyer is one of the most attractive drumheads there was.
Is that cheering I hear, it must be because it is time for the next 10 Western names.
1021 WESTERN CAVALIER
1022 WESTERN SENTINEL
1023 WESTERN FUSILIER
1024 WESTERN HUNTSMAN
1025 WESTERN GUARDSMAN
1026 WESTERN CENTURIAN
1027 WESTERN LANCER
1028 WESTERN HUSSAR
1029 WESTERN LEGIONNAIRE
1030 WESTERN MUSKETEER
After the names I had better post some photos. These were taken near my old home at Rugby. The first one is a class 60 diesel-electric No. 60085 ‘Axe Edge' heading north over the River Avon Bridge with an empty stone train; this was the site of water troughs in steam days. The 60 has the Trainload Construction sector markings on the side of the loco.
Before the 60s took over the working of this train a pair of class 37s worked it, if the wind was right the sound of the 37s could be heard for many miles at my old house.
Looking the other direction, with the Parkfield Road bridge in the background. a class 87 electric works an Inter City train. The 87s were introduced in 1973 to coincide with the extension of the West Coast Electrification northwards from Weaver junction(north of Crewe) to Glasgow they were the main express passenger power until being taken over by the Pendolinos.
The other side of the Parkfield Road bridge on the path that leads to 'Ticklebelly Tunnels', of bat fame; is another West Coast electric class with a long and succesful career, a class 86 on an Intermodel train. The 86s were introduced in 1965 and I believe there are still a handful still in service with FreightLiner.
A class 47 diesel-electrc on a short freight. The 47s were introduced in 1963 and the there were 512 of the class built. The 47 has Railfreight Distribution Sector markings.
A single class 87 was fitted with Thyristor control and this was numbered 87101 seen here on a train of new autos.87101 gained the name Stephenson which was first fitted to 87001.
Well RUTH keep the free beer flowing and I'll have Lar's Steak and Fries now please..
41st anniversary to Our Place the best bar in the ether. Well RUTH Eric is buying my beer until the end of the weekend, Tom is getting the beers today and Senior Manager Lars is in, so keep the Bathams and Holden's coming.
TOM Great toast for today.
Good news you have found someone who is willing to tackle the basement how you want it to be done. That is the method we had done with the front wall, which is totally underground, and there is no sign of leakage along that wall in our basement where there was a fair bit before we had it done.
I must admit has I got older I really learnt to appreciate the narrow gauge and the industrial railway scene.
It is really good those timetables from back in the day survived,as you say, it would be greatto have a look through them . I am always up for a visit to the Barriger Library.
Yes there really is some great material in the back pages of Our Place.
G.W, ALAN Thanks for the translation of the Llanfair PG name. Reading it reminded me of where I had seen the translation before. In the late 1950s or early 1960s BR had a small kiosk on the seafront at Rhyl where we used to holiday. They used to advertise local excursions and cheap tickets, they also produced a small booklet with timetables and a guide to the places in the area and the piece about Llanfair was in the booklet. Like Tom and I discussed about old timetables etc that booklet would be very interesting to read today.
Thanks for the info on the Wisbech Tramway as well.
Pride of the Great Western No. 6024 King Edward I leaves the sidings at Tyseley, Birmingham.
NICK I did not know the Llanberis Lake had extended their line until I was looking at their timetable on their web site and got confused, there was a map and it showed the line terminating opposite the Snowdon Mountain Railway, or so it appeared.
If I see any thing in the mags about Russell's overhaul I will put it up at the bar.
It would be good to see a photo of those Y9s, I had a look and in 1958 there still was a handful still running, it seemed most of them was allocated to shed 65E KIPPS, which was under the control of 65A Glasgow Eastfield. I'm afraid I know nothing about the shed at Kipps.
ERIC I did have a screen in the back of the seat on one of my flights, I think the plane was a 777. I would not be surprised if the one I am going to England on has pedals connected to propellers and a relative of H&H with a whip in economy class.
I think the drivers worked the 9F spaceships fast when they could, a speed of over 90MPH, when one took over the Flying Scotsman express after a loco failure, was recorded. The 9Fs only had 5 foot driving wheels.
Come over with us and we will go to North Wales and get someone to say that long name.
Many thanks for the photos; I guess those barriers are effective protecting the overhead wires on the grade crossing.
CM3 Yes I will visit the photo site again. Great to see the American rail scene in the 1960s, and I felt a bit nostalgic seeing a time when the Gatwick Express was just starting up and the Deltics were still to be seen at King's Cross.
Another Our Place coincidence. Just reading your post about the fire in the Channel Tunnel when BBC local radio reported on it. It seems it took 16 hours to put out.
ROB Many thanks for the photos. Those Geeps are interesting and powerful looking locomotives.
LARS Great to see you in the bar again, I will enjoy the steak tonight, thanks.
Many thanks for the link to the Staten Island Ferries. That is a wonderful tribute to those who lost their lives, The Spirit Of America. There are some great Lithographs on the site as well.
Glad you are enjoying the photos, I'm a new man since I got my scanner. Yes you will have to visit Tom's layout and a call in at the TrainWreck Saloon; I am looking forward to seeing the new steamers and cabooses next week.
It is great to see the book covers from the Larsman Mobile. Great Alcos on the Spokane one and the Morris County Traction Limited looks an interesting read, as does the Tri State Traction book. I think that is a ‘Jones Goods' 4-6-0 on the Highland Liveries.
Hope you are able to call in again soon, RUTH and the Mascots are not the same without you around.
Well RUTH this is getting a tad long so another Holden's while I post this, read Tom's Burlington post and load some photos..
Well, well - the Larsman returned with a super-fine spread of book covAHs for the gang on the occasion of our 41st Monthly Anniversary!
Great having our Senior Manager <Emeritus>on board!
A tad hard on the boyz though - for I doubt that either of ‘em <Sandman or Shane> deliberately failed to recognize this day - just a matter of not reading 'n connecting with the daily reminders . . . happens.
Anyway, good to see Lars, Shane ‘n Rob come in during the daylite!
Springs me loose for this from our sub-basement archives room . . .

HAPPY 41st MONTHLY ANNIVERSARY
to "OUR" PLACE and CURRENT CREW!
Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!!
Ruth my deAH, your radiance is omnipresent - did I say that Anyway, great to be back at the bar for a special day! The Forty First month of "Our" Place is definitely a celebraSHUN in the making! Set up the bar on the Senior Manager ‘n let me take care of the tab for the food, as I see Da Bossman is providing free drinks on this day!
Boris - time to feed those crittAHs! Awk gets the tray of seeds - Frostbite the bucket of ice cubes - Spike gets the tree bark - Tex is waiting for his saucer of brine - Artie is ready to devour a field mouse <OUTSIDE!> ‘n of course Juneau a chew bone! After that - YOU get the LARGE jar of pickled pig's feet! <phew>
A toast to the boyz at the bar AND to our most illustrious leadAH, Cap'n Tom - our most dedicated and tireless man at the helm!
I see that three regulAHs have dropped by since the midnight hour, but only ONE has made mention of our MONTHLY ANNIVERSARY. Looks as if what Cap'n Tom has been saying still holds true. The 12th still goes by unrecognized. The more things change, the more they stay the same, huh
Yesterday was a most somber day for me as a group of us attended the ceremonies at the site of the towers over in Manhattan. Very sobering, very sad and very remindful of the struggle ahead. There is no winning this until the vermin are eradicated from the face of the earth.
What has this to do with trains Well, I guess there is a connection in that the trains are running again at the site as we caught glimpses of the new Path trains and terminal being constructed.
Cap'n Tom, you'd love the new ferries. Nothing like those from when you boarded ‘em regulAHly. What used to cost a nickel is now a FREE ride. Remember when you could take your car No more, just passengers. Still one of the best 25 minute "sea" journeys around.
Here's a URL you might enjoy. Lots of places to "go" and lots of things to reminisce about too. This one is a ferry that is very special . . . it was "our" boat for one of the trips.
http://www.siferry.com/Current_Ferries.aspx
I see NOTHING has changed - we were shut down at SIXTY THREE, but others are STILL up ‘n running with far, far more than that. Wasn't I "called" on that some time ago by the Lock MastAH
Sorry to see that youse guyz weren't able to find a place to relocate. Maybe something will come along. I did receive the e-mails, although my frequency of checking ‘em is rather poor. <ooooooooops>
Haven't really spent a great deal of time online lately, but of course have been looking in. I don't log in, just to keep Da Bossman's blood pressure DOWN! I know he gets rather irritated seeing any of us logged in but not posting. So the idea is to NOT log in until ready to post! <gotcha Boss!>
In scrolling through about a dozen or more pages, I see that the group has remained rather steady in terms of numbers, although there's been quite a few periods where very little <except for Cap'n Tom> has been posted. Good to see the "core" sticking togethAH! Picked up on Pete ‘n Tom getting together <again>. Do you suppose Pete is trying to turn the man into a Brit
Eric in Sweden, Allan in Australia ‘n Pete soon off to the UK. Are you a far-flung lot or what Oh yeah, CM3 I'm NOT Shane in West Virginia - that's a far flung place too, dontchano! <grin> And of course, can't forget Rob up in Ontario where for whatever the reason he seems to think is heaven. <grin>
Must make comment on the outstanding material being provided by youse guyz! I have enjoyed the photos, makes it far easier for we reading-challenged types! <grin> Anyway. Pete has a never-ending source from his friend who seemingly lives to ride trains. Not a bad life! Then there's Eric with his random ‘n most interesting "stuff." The man who got rolled over by a trolley <but didn't realize it>, Rob - keeps on keeping on too! Gotta make mention of our man in west Wales, Nick too - for he comes up with all sorts of interesting material in visuals from his part of the world! Gotta say that the hand's down winnAH for the "best in show" goes to our Cap'n! Where in the world do you get the time to come up with the things you do Personal travel pix - railroad advertisements - great series of things, it just doesn't stop. Way to go, mate! And I did pick up on the locomotives you purchased. Like those B&O steamers, nice selection! I just gotta find a way to visit that train room of yours.
The idea of this contact with the bar is to help celebrate the occasion. So what bettAH way than a visit from the Larsman Mobile
No abuse of the RULE OF SIX intended. However, as Senior Manager, I'm exerting my privilege extended to me by Da Bossman to "go for it"!
I think that's "it" for now! Hope y'all enjoyed the spread . . .
Ruth, I'll be waiting "you know where" to help you with the <ahem> admin work! <blush>
Ring the gong, Boris - set ‘em up!
Until the next time!
Lars
A quick good morning folks. Ruth just a half order of the splashed coffee as I'm in a bit of a hurry ( gotta pay the bills afterall , so they tell me )But I couldn't not stop first thing in the morning on the monthiversary afterall.Proper acknowlogements later this evening.Herer'sa couple shots to keep thingsinteresting.

Another Northern Geep for everyone to enjoy.
Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox. Clear here this morning with temps in the 50s. Bought some $3.85 "bargain" gas on the way to work this a.m. Can't wait to see what it'll be next week.
Now to the stack of stuff.
Rob was in with comments - am glad to see that your picture machine is working again.
Pete - Thought you'd enjoy that site - he keeps adding to it.
Alan - Hello, again - thanks for information on Llanfair.
Nick - Mittle Feat and James Brown in the same sentence? Whoda thunk it.
Eric - Free drinks for being 1/2 right? I like it! Interesting setup at the grade crossing. Are most of them like that in populated areas?
OSP - Appreciated the rerun of GS material. I thought you'd enjoy the site - did you take a look at the RDCs in Pittsburgh and the CN RDC. Your remark about Channel Chuggers kicked something forward in what's left of the brain cells. There was a fire yesterday in the Channel tunnel. Freight train. People were evacuated out through the third tunnel. That was all they said on CNN - no mention of it after that. Good luck with the basement.
Will try and get back later.
work safe

41 months ago on this day, "Our" Place was founded as a cyber bar ‘n grill for adults who enjoy sharing info on Classic Trains while having some fun doing it. We've had many pass through our doorways <we have 2 sets!> some we'll fondly remember - others not. Some very interactive - others not. Some genuine in personality, acts ‘n deeds - others not. Here's to those who gave <'n give> a Rat's Patoot about this Tavern by the Tracks, especially our current crew! <clink> ALL DRINKS ON THE HOUSE TODAY for our Gang of Regulars!
Breakfasts are being prepared in our galley for those who enjoy a <light> or <traditional> pick-me-up before heading off to work or play! Our coffee is freshly ground ‘n brewed ‘n our pastries in The Mentor Village Bakery case are mouth watering . . . check ‘em out!

Page 19 - Alan <Great Western> at 5:05 PM <11:05 PM GMT>: A most surprising but welcome visit from an interesting fellow in the UK!
Can't classify the man as a customer - therefore no <tweeting> for Rules Violations! However, he has been OH-FISH-UL-LEE welcomed in the past, therefore "qualified" to spend some bucks at the bar! <grin>
You may want to remember that Wednesday is our OP-SHUN-UL Toy ‘n Model Trains Day! at the bar - ‘n since you are a modeler, we'd surely enjoy contributions from your corner of the world!
Always appreciate having you with us!
Page 19 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 7:04 PM <1:04 AM Friday GMT>: And another visit from a man in the UK, very much appreciated ‘n in keeping with the spirit of the way we do things ‘round here!
Band being ready for the road means an absence from the bar . . . Hmmmmm, that won't do! <grin> Please keep in mind that an Email would really be appreciated regarding planned extended absences - surely helps in planning ‘round here.
Can't ‘n won't "jump in" on the pronunciations in your part of the world. Boggles my feeble mind just to try ‘n read the words! <yikes> What was WRONG with those people who created that "tongue" <grin>
ANY foto of a VIA Rail observation dome car is a PLUS - in spite of it being attached to those funky Chunnel Chuggers <aka: Renaissance>!
My compliments on a fine inclusive offering along with your generosity in filling our glasses!
Friday - September 12th:
Page 19 - Eric <EricX2000> at 2:05 AM <12:05 AM Sandbox time>: Yeah, that trip to Alaska was an all ‘round great experience - a special vacation for our 15th anniversary <a couple of months in advance>. The "pillow" thing didn't really diminish the whole of it - but surely would've expected better for the amount of money put out for 1st class . . . that was the point in my telling the story. That airline has gone from "class act" to an embarrassment in my humble OH-PIN-YUN.
Yes, we'll surely discuss our travel plans for Rendezvous IV when we get together in November in the Sandbox! <grin>
Connecting rod! Why in the world the term didn't come to me is baffling - chalk it up to a senior moment. Having ‘em more ‘n more these daze . . . <uh oh>
I didn't "connect" 1993 with the first attempt at the World Trade Center . . . yeah, you were on tour, fer sure, fer sure. I saw you in St. Louis with THAT brunette, remember???? <caught!>
We purchased two very well put together volumes on the tragedy called 911 . . . the photos are so vivid that one relives that horrible day in front of the tube again ‘n again. People jumping from windows to their death - planes about to hit the towers - rescuers entering the buildings, some never to be found again in the rubble of the fallen buildings. All of it - the Pentagon - the field in Pennsylvania - captured forever on film. ‘nuf said . . . aside from my hope that there is a place WORSE than Hades where those responsible are suffering an eternity of anguish.
A nice, inclusive offering from our Sandman - but you MISSED something! Hmmmm - think about it!
Appreciate your continuing support ‘n business! <KaChing> <KaChing>

95 is a looooooong time, but never a good time to bid adieu to friends.
Reminder: Ruth has the bar from 9 AM until Leon the Night Man comes in at 5 PM ‘til closing.
TODAY is Pizza ‘n Beer Nite! - and - Steak ‘n Fries Nite!
Saturday is Steak ‘n All The Trimmings Nite!
Cindy is our Saturday bartender!
Hi folks,
Regarding the spelling of that looooooooooooooong name. I checked with the four web pages I Googled and they all five four L's. Anway no one ever says it as we all know. It's just Llanfair PG.
Just quick visit. I have to assist at a funeral in an hours time. Dear old soul of 95 years. RIP.

Good evening Captain Tom and all present!!
Leon, still awake! Yes, a cold Tui, please.
A busy day. Tonight I watched a lot of TV. It was all about what happened 7 years ago. Made me think about the WTC attack 1993. That was when Amtrak had the X2000 in revenue service between Washington and NYC. I saw the smoke that time. 7 years ago I was home from work, sick and watched TV all day.
Tom – No, Rendezvous IV is still on my agenda and I don’t plan to remove it. Just hope the gas price is a bit lower then. Maybe we can discuss the travel plans in November when you are in town! Two seats to yourself on long flights is worth a lot. Much more room for everything and can go to the bathroom anytime! No pillow when flying first class doesn’t sound right. They actually had pillows in economy class last Sunday when I flew from Chicago to Phoenix. United Airlines. Yes, today is/was a tragic day. I remember like yesterday when it happened. Was sick and saw when the second plane hit WTC live and heard when the plane hit Pentagon. A reporter was reporting from Pentagon when it happened. I spent a couple of hours in front of the TV tonight watching a lot of videos from that day. I am afraid I need a name on what is missing on that locomotive. A good try though! 1/3 correct!
Interesting SP ad! Palm Springs looked different then, in the early 50’s!CM3 – Parts of the valve gear is missing, but so is another part that is more obvious in my opinion. But I’ll give you 1/2 right answer, free drinks the rest of this week and weekend! Sunday you have to come in through the back door. Boris will let you in. Rob – Correct answer! Most obvious is the connecting rod! That locomotive was in running condition until a few years ago but when it was sent to this place, a former railroad station, they removed the connecting rods and parts of the valve gear to make it possible to haul it in a freight train. And for whatever reason they have not put back those parts yet. Free drinks from now until next Wednesday evening! Very nice photos! That Budd car looks great but still it is in the wrong place with those “R” cars. The RS23 looks brand new. Nice paint job!Pete – Very good answer! This is getting kind of tricky. Hmmm. I guess the best thing to do is to let you all have free drinks from now until the end of the weekend! Camera on your plane going to UK? If you have a screen in the back of the seat in front of you and it is an Airbus, there may be cameras. Check it out! I don’t know if Boeing has that alternative on their new planes. I wonder how you run a locomotive as a spaceship? I would love to hear somebody say that name, Llanfair-something. Alan – Hmm, I wonder if you spelled that name correct? Hmmm. I think there is one l too many. Nick – No, sir the valve gear is partly missing like the connecting rod. Yes, I enjoyed my trip to the old country, but as I mentioned earlier this week, flying is no fun nowadays.
Two photos.
Same class B as last night. The former station building to the left.
A typical grade crossing in Sweden.
Well good evening gentlemen all ,Leon-a quick short for all please whilst we take a minute to consider not only what happened on this day,but also all the other times when innocent passers by became victims ...................................thank you
Right then-just back from band night, and my word was it loose and funky-more Little Feat than James Brown-and none the worse for that -this show is definately ready for the road.....
So-to business:-
ERIC-good to have you back mate-hope you enjoyed your travels.....-nice pix of the class `B`-I`m assuming that the valve gear is inside the frames..??-keep it near the boiler and the radiant heat keeps everything running loose and easy.......
TOM-Everything changes mate-all the time-I dare not go back to the old village `cos it won`t be the place I left-last I heard,I ran into a bunch of tourists down from there (about 10 years ago) and a kid I remember being born was then the head barman in the local pub-where I used to work a generation before.......
The new job is not a worry-have always worked in the service industry, this time I dont have to get 40-60 meals ready 3 times a day-just answer the phone and wrap books......... I can live with this
SHANE-completely agree-N.G itis is a devious disease-one moment you are cutting timber for a basement full of main line trackage, before you know it you have assembled a 3 ft cube of a North Wales quarry with lines on 5 levels, various lifts between levels and you are downloading articles about exactly what wet slate or rusted rails look like and how to reproduce a waterfall in 3.5mm scale and where to get genuine slate fragments from...............
The `company` image mentioned earlier is mid green panels with yellow trim and doors and white window frames-will get a couple of pix together-
ROB-Beware the evils of drink-also the even greater evil of mixing with the boys in the band -as to clothes,denims,T-shirts and leathers have always worked for me-black or dark blue for preference-even in black suits I look like a head transplant victim......what ya gonna do ??
A weird pic of the dome car with the cast offs...
TOM-a very nice piece on the `Golden State`-
PETE-Again you have the better of me-was the first time on that line-no idea whether that was the original terminus----sorry
Now then-Peter Sam-the engines on the `Skarloey ` railway featured in several books-I will need to go and raid Hannah`s bookshelf for my Rev Awdry Compendium before I can come back to you on that one.
Russell-last contact I had with one of the W.H.R mob ,they were hoping to have Russell back for the grand opening...we shall see
Sounds like the Darjeeling engine is the one I thought it was-will load in pix of the Westerns as soon as I have a moment to myself -can`t beat the old Ian Allen combined volumes -I believe the "permanently attached tenders` were 5 plank wagons with the ends knocked out
ALAN-A pint of guinness for you for spotting the correct translation of Llanfair P.G-full marks mate -and another pint for extra detail on the Wisbech & Upwell-good call mate
Right-thats me for tonight, see you all soon, take care now.......
Good evening gents,
Sorry I can't stop. Popped in just to see who was here.
Re Welsh station names, Well I am alive and I can pronounce it. I learned it in 1953 - which is a long while ago.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
The longest town name in the world means "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave".
The Wisbech Tramway carried mainly fruit and produce from the Fenland fields. It was a pretty unique system and the line was very flat with virtually no grades. As it was classed as a tramway and ran, in parts, on public roads the cowcatcher was a government regulation.
Oh. yes. Thanks for the Milwaukee Road page . That's one of my US railroads on my models.
<VIA Rail's eastbound Ocean at Moncton, NB - personal foto>
Time to get a leg up on the acknowledgments . . . good to see some daylite activity ‘round here with 3 of our most special regulars showing up!
Page 18 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 8:40 AM <9:40 AM EDT>: That "six degrees of separation" applies to many situations - today being one. Seems if we really think about it, we all are "connected" to that tragic day in more ways than one might imagine. <silent toast to the fallen>
I visited that link <worked fine!> ‘n found it every bit as interesting as you indicated. Also sent an Email to "Bob" - invited him to the bar ‘n asked his "okay" to use some of his images. Really a super fine site.
Yeah - that's IT - the "thing-a-muh-jig" is missing! I KNEW it! <grin>
Thanx for the visit, chat, link, QUARTERS ‘n ROUND!
Page 18 - Rob <trolleyboy> at Noon ‘n 12:20 PM <1 PM ‘n 1:20 PM EDT>: Surprise noontime visits from our Manager! I'm "on" to you, Mate - keeping the staff off guard with these irregular visits - just to ensure things are going well. You may want to know that our cadre of aviators <avions> keep a good lookout - Awk, Artie ‘n Frostbite have set up a relay system when they spot your VW coming down the hill . . . .
Picked up on the "shoddy look," eh Yeah, some of these so-called fashion statements make me want to . . . but I do think that's ALWAYS the intent on the part of those on the fringe of it all. Isn't anything new - they somehow enjoy the "shock value" of what they do <or don't do>. I recall way back when - used to keep my cigarettes rolled up in a sleeve of my t-shirt <up against my shoulder> - wore my belt buckle off to one side ‘n of course had a sneer that Elvis would've envied. Yeah - the "shock value" was something else! <grin>
Isn't every day we get a sack o' quarters for our Coal Scuttle! Five plays for 25 cents is a good deal - anytime - for Herr Wurlitzer's seemingly never ending selections of music to satisfy ALL tastes <'n then some>! <grin>
Picked up on your comments over on "my other Thread" ‘n appreciate your decision. It's just run its course - perhaps we can bring it back at a later time, IF that is it doesn't fall into the clutches of the LOCKSMITH! <uh oh> Which brings to mind - have you checked the Active Topics lately Still have the usual suspects running full bore with far more Pages than the 63 we had at "Our" Place III. <censored> <barf>
Just finished putting "window glass" in the first of 10 cabooses for the display case. This one is a CP with the script Canadian Pacific - wood sides. Looks great!
Nice foto spread - looks like the Evangeline Park car - but couldn't enlarge it enuf to tell . . . Yeah, with the Renaissance consist, that Budd beauty looks rather lonely. Have been wondering when ‘n if VIA Rail will paint the traditional blue stripe on the Park car in a color to match the Chunnel Chuggers. Probably not - unless there's a massive repainting for ALL of their equipment in the works.
Surely if PhotoBucket changed your foto codes they can undo the problem. Why not ask I mean you have a treasure of images at the bar ‘n over on "my other Thread" - a real shame to drop ‘em over a procedural matter <if that's what it is>. G'wan - send ‘em an Email - can't hurt.
Appreciate the support ‘n hope to see ya ‘round here in the not-too-distant future!
Page 18 - Pete <pwolfe> at 4:07 PM: First step taken regarding the basement "fix" as a young man, very professional, arrived to assess the situation. He was totally in agreement with my thoughts regarding finding the source of the water, then attacking it from the outside of the house. His company will also waterproof the outside foundation wall with sealant - so that along with a French drain system should "do it." Next is to agree to the price ‘n schedule the work. Feeling better - even though this is going to set us back some bullion from the coffers. <uh oh>
Predictions for rain ‘round here is to have a very rainy Friday ‘n Saturday then the remains of Ike passes over on Monday. All should be clear for our get together . . .
I'm really not a narrow gauge enthusiast either - but thanx to the most informative stuff EVER that gets provided at our bar, the learning curve just has no end! Steel wheels on steel rails - no matter what the form - are most welcome ‘round here!
Oh fer sure, fer sure - there are collections upon collections of RR memorabilia including those passenger train pamphlet-ads "out there" - probably sitting in someone's basement in boxes or file cabinets - just waiting to be "discovered." <grin> Remember those train schedules we saw at Union Station that were sitting in the glassed-in display case Would've dearly loved to have browsed through them . . . Perhaps we could find some over at the Barriger Library! Now there's a thought . . .
Glad you took the "trip" back in time - I plan on providing a link like that just to encourage our crew to review some of the fine material we've shared at the bar. Why not Otherwise it just evaporates into the abyss of the ether . . .
Many thanx for your < I3 > Post, good cheer, order of food ‘n ROUND!
A pint of Bathams please RUTH.
TOM Yes it does not seem 7 years since the tragic events, even the newscaster on TV just saying today's date brings it back like it was yesterday.
I had a look back at the bar a year ago, there are some names we no longer see but great to see the names we still have today. I had forgotten about that great painting of the GG1.
As you say, I can just see that Santa Fe on The Can-Am backing down to take a heavy train over Mentor Mountain.
Glad you enjoyed the photos. I am not too up myself on those narrow gauge engines but like the American locomotives I am learning at Our Place.
Hope we can get off light with the amount of rain they are now forecasting this weekend and then the effects of Ike early next week. Hopefully it will stay to the east of you. I have put some more sealant on our basement.
Many thanks for the Passenger Nostalgia on the SP's Golden State with its attractive drumhead. What a great trip it would have been to take the through Pullman car from St Louis to Los Angeles. I wonder if many of those folders they sent out survive in collections today.
NICK Many thanks for the information on the Welsh narrow gauge locomotives; I knew I had come to the right place to get the answers. In the first photo with Thomas Bach, is that the station that is nearer the center of Llanberis than the old station on the new bit of line.
Passing the ball with only 5 yards to go seems sensible with a big prop forward, in the form of trying to identify Tal-y-Lyn engines and rolling stock, approaching me. I have been trying to recall in what books Peter Sam appeared, any ideas
I believe Russell is having an overhaul just now, it will be good to see her stretch her legs on the WHR with a vintage train. I have had a look and the Darjeeling engine worked on the Reseau Guerledan in Brittany and was named France, it seems real sad the locals forced the owner out.
I will look forward to the Western photos in their different liveries, I recall on one of my first visits to Paddington station seeing, I think it was D1035, in a very dark green livery.
Looking at an ABC I found the Tram locos on the Wisbech & Upwell were the 0-4-0 being Y6 built in 1883 and the 0-6-0 J70 of 1903. The Y9s were an 1882 Holmes, of the North British Railway, design 0-4-0 Saddle Tank. In the book there is an asterisk by half of the class with a note saying "Locos running permanently attached to wooden tenders", aren't those old Combine Volumes great.
It seems good progress on the model layout with the 3F getting the identity of an S&D engine. What a great job with those rare books I wonder if you will see many railway volumes.
ERIC There was a piece on the 9Fs on a DVD it said something like "The engines got the nickname ‘Spaceships' and the Drivers drove them like a spaceship".
That is great idea to have a camera on the aircraft facing downward I don't suppose the plane I'm going on will be fitted with one.
Glad you liked the photos from Wales. When I started work there were a few lads from North Wales and they could say that long name without pausing, it was known to us English as Llanfair P.G. as Nick says. The Tal-y-Lyn is 2 feet 3 inch gauge.
Many thanks for the photos. # 1268 looks in good condition apart from the missing connecting rod and other parts of the Stephenson Valve Gear. Thanks for the round.
CM3 May I join you in that toast.
It seems as though the factory I was at had a very close connection to GE, I believe it was the British part of GE when it was the British Thompson Houston Co.
Glad you enjoyed the narrow gauge photos, I have some of the Ffestiniog I will post next week.
The photo of the sign from Llanfair PG station was at a museum, I could not recall the name yesterday but it came to me today, it is the Penrhyn Castle Museum. I have a feeling that Llanfair PG station was closed for a while, although I could be wrong, and the nameboard came to the museum then. In the National Rail timetable today BR uses just the first 12 letters of the station name.
I used to have a platform ticket with the stations name on it, they were sold mostly as souvenirs.I have a link to the museum and a photo of the historic Fire Queen locomotive somewhere Iwill try to find.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrhyn_Castle_Railway_Museum
Many thanks for that great link to those great photos, plenty to look at. Enjoyed the old diesels and RDC on the B&M although that livery on the locomotive on the Talgo train takes a bit of getting used to and great shot of the Gatwick Express MLV striking an arc on the third rail in the British section is great as well as the Deltics. A site well worth keeping.
ROB Thanks for the kind words on the photos. Yes it is great those narrow gauge engines were able to be saved. The Tal-y-Lyn will always have a place in the British Railfans heart as it was the first preserved railway in Britain. I wonder if those pioneers ever though there would be so many preserved lines and one of them is able to run engines at 60 MPH for testing purposes.
Glad you have sorted out the Photobucket problem I know the feeling when I managed to delete all mine at one time. Many thanks for today's photos. Certainly the photo of the Budd cars shows the big difference in loading gauge between Europe and North America. Great photo of the M630s on the bridge.
Well RUTH a round pleaseand I had better keep H&H happy by having the Fish 'N' Chips.
With Shane ‘n Rob "in" during daylite, seems a bit "normal" round here - not that those two are anything close to "normal" - but nice to have ‘em aboard! <grin>

Here's something to enjoy regarding the Southern Pacific (SP) from a 1951 advertisement in my personal collection.
We think, you'll enjoy our "Golden State," especially if you're an experienced traveler. We have many friends who repeat, winter after winter, "chasing the sun Southwest" on this smooth, extra-fare S.P. & Rock Island streamliner. It's convenient. Takes you via El Paso and Southern Arizona's winter resorts to Palm Springs & Los Angeles. She's been re-streamlined, too, from stem to stern. We've issued a folder to celebrate the event and would like to send it to you. Helps you choose your accommodations, whether Pullman (Drawing rooms, Compartments, Bedrooms, Roomettes) or Chair Car (economical; Coffee Shop). By the way, the "Golden State" is extra fast, too - 44 ¼ pleasant hours, Chicago-Los Angeles or vice versa. Fine connecting streamliners. Perhaps you'd like to try another great S.P. route, going home. That way you see twice as much, usually for no extra rail fare. The little map shows how. Why don't you plan on the "Golden State" for this winter or next summer? And meantime, let us send you that folder?
"GOLDEN STATE," Chicago-Los Angeles, via El Paso, Douglas, Bisbee, Tucson, Phoenix, Palm Springs, 44 ¼ hours. Through Pullmans, Minneapolis and St. Louis to Los Angeles. Through Chair car, Minneapolis-Los Angeles. Connecting service to San Diego.

Afternoon Ruth ,I think a large sandwich is in order, the turkey club on rye would work with all the fixn's as well and I think a nice draft of Keith's to chase it with. I'll leave a twenty for an afternoon round as well.
Lets see since I have now figured out / fixed the photobucket issue I had which caused all the posted pics to disappear. ( changed class of account and they changed all the photo codes ) Sorry folks too many previously posted pics to go back and fix em all so I'm not gonna try.Fresh new slate from now on
Heres a few that have not been posted here before enjoy.
Shot of the Ocean just outside of Halifax, ignore the horrible "R" cars and envision an entire Budd train much better
Something from Fergie's Neck of the woods,a Windsor and Hantsport RS23 on the ex CP Dominion and Atlantic lines.
Something from my neck of the woods CN M630's pulling a train over the Paris Ontario bridge over the Grand River
Good morning Ruth , yes Boris I know It's afternoon where I am bu it's still morning at the bar.I should know I went to Sir Stanford flemming High School afterall.Later cahnged name to Laura Secord ( more of a local hero in my neck of the woods than the creator of standard time ) At any rate Ruth just a large thermos of the "special spiced" please oh and here's a sack of qaurters for the coal scuttles as well. What's that Boris no there are kknow silver coins from Oak island in there.
Tom-A fine looking colection of steam for the high Iron once the cabooses are in tow the shot's will be complete.I had to giggle at the latest round of "goods" et al written up in the mentor want ads.At least there were no mention of Chinease food and cats in the same sentence.
No need to add anymore to teh sombre day today is,nice touch to add in the link for those wayward folks that just look in and say nothing.
Pete-Fine steam shots enjoyed them all sir I too am starting to recogniaze some of them just like Tom.We both may become "Englishified" after all, so ther's some hope for we mere "colonials"
Shane-I'm always mistified at the shoddy look of today's clothing.Having at least ten emplyess at teh store under teh age of 17,you can imagine. For this reason we strictly enforce the company dress code ( no torn clothing proper fit etc etc )You gotta love those jeans with the crotch where the kneecaps should be
Nick-Whats to say but wow I can't remember anything after the first encore, and I never got to the profered "cigarette"
Eric-Great shots from home sir I'll take a stab at the what's missing.Looks to be that some of the conecting rods are gone and I didn't see a reverser either.
Back soon.
Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.
Before we do anything, a toast to missing friends. Today cuts pretty close for me because of folks I knew who were on one of the planes at the WTC and a member of my wife's family who barely made it out of the Pentagon. The section of the building where he was held together long enough for him to escape.
Pete - I knew you'd pick up on my reference to Mazda. I remember GE-Mazda Christmas tree lamps back whne I was a pup.
Delightful pictures of the narrow gauge. Narrow gaugeitis, BTW, is a serious affliction. Kind of like logging disease. It causes otherwise rational people to rip out perfectly good layouts, wreck their basements, and disappear for months at a time. One day, they're modeling WV operations in HO, and the next day we're in Colorado doing On3.
Llanfair - outstanding! I remember pictures from there and IIRC the station was a lot smaller and a lot older. Is that a new building? Track looked as though it was being worked on, r/b or something.
Nick - I'm here, sir! Roofers are done (PTL) and office is getting back into what passes for normalcy in my business. Interesting to read that your are going for "company look" on buildings. Also appreciated your pictures and comments - it all helps to round out the story.
Eric - Lovely 4-6-0 but what happened to the valve gear?
OSP was in with comments. Mazdaites are a sect, kinda like mallites.
Now for something which will interest all of you. The following website (I stumbled into it yesterday) features a fine selection of what can best be called planes, trans, ships, trolleys, etc. Many of them were taken in New England but there are others from differenet locations. Note to OSP - includes lots of RDCs cars in different habitats. Pictures of the "New England States" with Canadian Pacific sleepers were interesting as they operated between Boston and Toronto (what a concept!) anyway, there is a lot to look at - enjoy.
http://www.bcoolidge.com/Index.htm will get you there - suggest you just go there rather than trying to use a link from this post as they don't always do what they are supposed to.
Hard to believe that it's been 7 years . . . makes for a sobering remembrance.
It's Thursday at the Bar by the Ballast ‘n time to join us for coffee, pastries ‘n breakfasts from our Menu Board!
Tomorrow is our Monthly Anniversary . . . Since the Larsman departed the scene, I don't recall anyone mentioning the 12th - unless "prodded" of course.
Perusing Pages from our Past <P3>
Here's something NEW for our crew - checking out material from those who were at the bar on this date "back when" - so, here's Sep 11th, 2007, Page 109 "Our" Place II . . . Check it out! Who knows, you may see something NEW or that you enjoy viewing again!

Wednesday - September10th <all times Central daylite>:
Page 18 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 8:26 AM ‘n 1:49 PM: A rare, but most appreciated two-fer from our Resident WVA Connection!
Given that only you ‘n Pete are our daylite regulars, it's going to be a loooooooooong lonely month of October. <groan>
I'm not a subscriber to RMC - however, I'd like to have read that S-scale article . . . and yes, it most probably was more of a "hands on" hobby earlier on.
Mazdaites Hmmmmm, where did I see that before Hmmmmm. Certainly NOT in the confines of "Our" Place! <grin> Do a search on that name ‘n tell me what you think! <grin>
Never would've figured YOU for a wearer of anything other than the finest of finery! I've just never understood the rationale behind purchasing supposed NEW garments that have been washed, faded, torn ‘n tattered . . . surely have better ways to throw my money away. Hmmmm - model trains comes to mind!
If wishes were horses . . . I'd dearly love to have complete sets of at least a score of named passenger trains from back in the day. Not in any particular order, but on my mind tonite - Broadway Limited - 20th Century Limited - Super Chief - Crescent - Empire Builder - California Zephyr - Royal Blue - Canadian - Super Continental, etc., etc., etc.
While I've discarded many of the boxes ‘n packaging accompanying my model railroad purchases over the decades - I have retained the boxes for the locomotives ‘n rolling stock. Some of those price stickers bring tears . . . oh the good ole daze! <groan> Must say that packaging as surely changed over the years - now it seems that the carton is surely upscale to go along with the upscale product. The things we throw our money at, eh
Double dip of quarters ‘n ROUNDs most appreciated along with your continuing support for this Tavern by the Tracks!
Page 18 - Pete <pwolfe> at 2:56 PM: Our Bar Chandler arrived with a fist-full of fotos, commentary ‘n a ROUND for this thirsty crew of ours!
Professionals!?!?!? You mean THEY get PAID regularly for doing what you ‘n I do <occasionally> I think it's time for me to become a Brit! <grin>
I do agree with your comments on the steamers shown on the Can-Am main lines. With the mountains as featured landscaping, those beasts do look as if they "belong," especially in the snow!
My guess is that there was no more confusion with "Hiawatha" than with "Zephyr" when it came to the named trains of back in the day. Just a matter of ensuring that the train board was checked closely for the destination desired! <grin>
Between you ‘n Nick, I'm beginning to recognize some of those shots taken in Wales! <yikes> I'm becoming a Brit!
Looking forward to our get together next week ‘n hoping the weather cooperates . . . by then I should have a "handle" on the next phase of my basement nightmare . . . <ugh>
Thanx for your continuing support for our Watering Hole by the Wayside!
Page 18 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at: 5:52 PM - 6:49 PM ‘n 7:26 PM ‘n 8:08 PM ‘n 8:22 PM <11:52 PM Wednesday - 12:49 AM ‘n 1:26 AM ‘n 2:08 AM ‘n 2:22 AM Thursday GMT>: "In" with a FIVER - first one arrived whilst we still had daylite in these parts - many thanx! Hurtin' for business ‘n conversation with so few remaining . . . Always a pleasure to have our Resident Londoner in Wales up ‘n about the decks!
No little ones remaining to tug at Grandpa - but perhaps one day some great-grandkids! <grin>
Lars almost had me convinced that I "needed" to return to my place of birth . . . but I never made the commitment ‘n really still do not have the desire to go back. I've mentioned my feelings on this regarding my 25th anniversary trip <high school reunion> ‘n how the things that no longer existed really destroyed my "mind's eye" remembrances. Don't like that aspect of nostalgia . . .
IF the Can-Am Railway had the room - I'd love to put in another mainline dedicated to nostalgia - then those steamers ‘n perhaps some strings of heavyweights <varnish> could in fact be realized. However, being very realistic ‘n in consideration of the rather large inventory of passenger ‘n freight cars sitting idle in the display cases - I'm inclined to hold the line where it has been drawn! <yikes>
I do plan on making up some ‘specials' now ‘n then - of course fotos will be taken for the enjoyment of our clientele.
Your comments regarding the numbers of people "hitting" on us is well taken. Pete ‘n I have discussed this so many times . . . ‘n probably will again upon his visit next week.
Those fotos of the narrow gauge in your part of the world are most interesting ‘n perhaps one day I'll get to see ‘em up close ‘n personal. Working trains - now that's my idea of railroading. Then again, none of it really was <or is> for pleasure when it comes to the people employed to make "it" happen, eh
Somehow envisioning our man Nick as a guy behind the counter just doesn't "ring" for me. However, I'm wishing you the best ‘n undoubtedly any steady source of income is one that needs not to be passed up.
Nice job with being not only inclusive but making your comments on point as well!
I won't profess to understand one bit of what is going on ‘n beneath the mountains in Switzerland ‘n France - but I'm wondering if it's time to bend over ‘n kiss our respective keesters bye-bye! <Styx for reference!> Yeah, beneath the bedding is my choice too! <grin>
Many thanx for your visits - chat - fotos - ROUNDs ‘n good cheer!
Thursday - Sepember 11th:
Page 18 - Eric <EricX2000> at 1:54 AM <11:54 PM Wednesday, Sandbox time>: Yeah, I guess when one considers the definition of "vacation," then having a job factors in. But in the widely accepted view, just getting away from it all is what most of us think of as vacation -not just leaving work behind. Anyway, certainly relieved to know that Rendezvous IV won't be impacted . . .
Although it is over a half year away, perhaps you'll be able to stay here the night before our drive to WVA . . . that way you'll get to see the Can-Am's latest, up close ‘n personal. But of course as we get closer, the plans will come together via Email!
We'll be looking forward to getting together with you ‘n Pam in Phoenix this November - just wear your "best" torn ‘n tattered clothing so that I'll recognize you! <grin>
Having two seats to yourself on such a long flight surely takes the "edge" off in terms of comfort. I can well imagine the deterioration in cabin-service, which is a crying shame. When we flew round-trip to Anchorage <first class> on American Airlines - we couldn't even get a pillow! Yeah - I'm serious! They had removed all of ‘em from their planes to save money!! Fortunately, the seat backs had somewhat of a pillow built in to the headrest - but hardly the same. Also wasn't ecstatic with the service on our return flight. Wrote ‘em a letter - never received an acknowledgment. Wrote another, got a "canned" reply. <barf>
And to think all of this began on this date - seven years ago. Of course the tragic loss of life ‘n property is far more important than nonsense like pillows on airplanes. However, the spillover effect into other aspects of our lives is evident all around us.
Fine fotos - airport gates all look the same! Your quiz . . . hmmmmm. I know something is missing, but I don't know the name of it! Hmmmmm.
Many thanx for your visit - late or not, it's most appreciated as is the ROUND!
TODAY is Fish ‘ Chips Nite!
Friday is Pizza ‘n Beer Nite! - and - Steak ‘n Fries Nite!
Leon, it's time for Rumpsteak Café de Paris, please! Medium as usual. A cold Keith's, please.
Sorry I am late tonite. Got some other things I had to take care of so I have not been doing any catch up this evening.
Tom – Looking forward to see some photos of your cabooses when they arrive! This was my last vacation. Rendezvous IV, is not vacation! Hard work, just hard work (of the interesting and entertaining kind). In my opinion I can’t have a vacation if I don’t have a job and after Oct. 30 I’ll finally be 100% retired, no job!!! What’s the address to that Mentor Village’s Flea Market ‘n 24/7 Garage Sale Outlet Store? Must be an interesting place! Could it be... hmmm, I wonder if it is Vito’s garage? Toyota Hunchback for only $2,000?? That’s a bargain!! Vito’s driveway? I like those caps Fergie sent you! And the cup! Of course it is cool to look shoddy! What did you think? Thanks for the photos of your new steam locos! Indeed very good looking locomotives!CM3 – Yes, that plane was named after me. Eric Viking. My grandma’s maiden name was Viking, so it has my name! I had two seats to myself which was nice! Gas prices here have not increased, they are still going down. Pete – Sputniks or not, I still don’t like the name ‘Spaceship’ for a locomotive. But I guess they liked the idea at that time. Thanks for the info on the WD locomotives! SAS has two cameras on their Airbus jet liners flying across the Atlantic. One is aimed straight forward and one straight down. There is a small screen in front of each passenger where you can watch movies, play games, etc., and also look outside through the cameras. I like to check when they start and land. Thanks for the photos from Wales. That is certainly a long name. Is there any living person that can pronounce it? What is the gauge? Looks like 2” something. Nick – Yes, I am well, thank you! Survived the trip to the old country and is now back home in the desert. Nice to be home again. Thanks for the translation of that name! I think I recognize it. Nice photos of those narrow gauge locomotives!
Some more photos.
Stockholm, Arlanda Airport, terminal 4, gate 32. Just posted a hello at Our Place! 8/23/08.

The rear end of the same locomotive.
Quiz: What is missing?
Round for the house!
Eric.
Oh right,I see-the particle accelerater has gone wrong and I am now in a universe where there is nobody at our place-very scary...gonna go and hide under the blankets, just in case.......
Right then LEON- I think its time for a bottle of the special rum and a handful of shot glasses please...
O.K-before we go any further, tis time to welcome back ERIC and SHANE to the fold, greetings gentlemen both-I trust you are both well ??
Well then-`tis pikes perspective day,so whats new-well I think the big news is the new Can-Am steam fleet-looking very well if I may say so -and would look rather better with a string of varnish on the hook..............
New on this side is-a whole load of sheds and huts (inherited from Alan) now painted into `house` colours,a B.R mk1 Bk 3rd painted into Carmine & cream livery to make up a 4 coach set,got the transfers together to properly number 3f#43216,got most of the low level lines `live` now, layed the last tracks into the top station (complete with soldered `droppers` for the dead ends)-starting to look ahead to signalling
Absolutely refuse to lose another winter to `really don`t feel like going up there`-even if I never get to run a train I can spend useful time repairing scenery and so forth.......
Well-thats the plan anyway........lets wait and see if reality intrudes
Looks like I have got a new job-one of small Hannah`s schoolmates dads (?) has a business sourcing rare books and then posting them on-seems he needs a storeman to sort of take care of the physical side of it whilst he mans the computer-indoor work with no heavy lifting at $15 an hour-will see me through the worst summer in recent history quite nicely-bring it on as they say -let me know if there are any rare volumes you need for your collections.....
Right-bed now-school run tomorrow-take care chaps
Quick top-up post:-
ROB-grovelling apologies for missing the Band/the Hawks and Neil Young on our pre-gig inventory -I trust our encore performance of `Southern Man`made up for this-although as you were asleep on one of the pool tables by this time it is possible that this passed you by.....moral of the story-never share a smoke with me or Steve the drummer ,especially after consuming that amount of ale.....................................
PETE-Wisbech & Upwell-Toby the tram of blessed memory -two types I believe,Y7 & Y9 -one an 0-4-0 and the other an 0-6-0-could well be rambling here-its the fumes from the jam & chutney factory in the galley here......
Right-back to it-should be caught up soon,as long as I dont get distracted
