"Our" Place is CLOSED on SUNDAYs

Starting TODAY at the Mentor Village Emporium Theatre!

. . . April 27th thru May 3rd: Walk the Line <2005> Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin, Robert Patrick & Dallas Roberts - and - ENCORE Presentation of Cobb <1994> Starring: Tommy Lee Jones & Robert Wuhl. SHORT: The Three Stooges - Three Little Pirates <1946>.

<Note: Cobb first shown on Sunday, April 30th thru May 6th, 2006>

Walk the Line <2005>

PLOT SUMMARY:

A solid and entertaining biopic, Walk the Line works less as a movie than an actors' showcase for its stars. Joaquin Phoenix's total immersion into the skin of singer Johnny Cash is startling--watching it, you can't believe this is the same guy who whined about being "vexed" in Gladiator. As he evolves from a farm boy to gospel croonin' plunker to the Man in Black, Phoenix disappears into Cash's deep baritone, his way of slinging the guitar onto his back, and his hunched-up style of strumming. But it's more than just picking up mannerisms: Phoenix also sings as Johnny Cash, and it's quite impressive.

<from: amazon.com>

Cobb <1994>

PLOT SUMMARY:

Tyrus Raymond Cobb played baseball like a man charging a machine-gun nest. He gave no quarter took no prisoners. And when his Hall of Fame career was over Ty Cobb attacked life the same way. Tommy Lee Jones portrays the legendary - and equally cheered and detested - Georgia Peach in this acclaimed film from writer/director Ron Shelton (Bull Durham Dark Blue) also starring Robert Wuhl and Lolita Davidovich. From its recapturing of the outfielder's playing days (Roger Clemens portrays a rival pitcher) to its recreation of a 1961 Hall of Fame banquet Cobb is a movie grand slam.

<from: amazon.com>

SHORT: The Three Stooges - Three Little Pirates (1946)

PLOT SUMMARY:

Curly, Moe, and Larry, NYC garbage barge sailors, wash ashore on an island stuck in the 17th century, and ruled by a tyrannical Governor. With the help of the lovely Rita Yolanda, and using the ruse of a nearsighted Maharajah and his entourage, they go in search of a pirate named Black Louie who will ferry them to the mainland. Unfortunately, the Governor and Louie are well-acquainted, and the pirate forces the Stooges to engage in a deadly knife-throwing contest to purchase their freedom from the island.

G'day Gents!

Yes, we are CLOSED on SUNDAYs - but the mail slots do accept messages ‘n fotos! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Saturday - April 26th <all times Central daylite>:

Page 18 - Pete <pwolfe> at 11:09 AM: A rather early appearance from our Bar Chandler on a Saturday. No matter, the support for our Saturday endeavors means a lot. Seriously doubt that anyone, other than Moi, was around to read your inclusive comments though.

Next Dart's Challenge ‘n Grudge Match Question [?] Honestly can't think that far ahead - seriously wondering whether this joint will remain open past this spring . . . <uh oh>

Should I see Sonia, I'm sure SHE will ask where you are Question [?] <ooooooo la la> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I'm hoping NOT to see that less than communicable Service Manager we had! Thumbs Down [tdn]

Spate of six fotos w/descriptions worked out well for our "new" Saturday bill o' fare! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanx for the visit - fotos ‘n comments. Yeah!! [yeah]

Page 18 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 6:09 PM ‘n 8:09 PM <12:09 AM ‘n 2:09 AM Sunday GMT>: Didn't expect to see ya over the weekend, Mate! Surprised but pleased you not only made it "in," but was able to provide two fine foto spreads for us to gander at! Thumbs Up [tup] Really provides great insights to the railways in your part of the world - descriptions are everything! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thanx for the effort - I know it takes time.

Not to worry, you've demonstrated a keen ability to cover all the bases regarding playing catch-up! Remember the old days when we had at least three times the Posts of today Question [?] <phew> At least we've gotten rid of the "fluff"!! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Three ROUNDS for the boyz ‘n lots of good CHEER, can't beat that! Yeah!! [yeah]

Sunday - April 27th <all times Central daylite>:

Page 18 - Eric <EricX2000> at 12:49 AM: In the 90s with NO air conditioning turned on Question [?] Good Gawd Gertie - how can you DO that Question [?] I'd be dying, fer sure, fer sure. And don't give this crap about "it's a dry heat"! <barf> I remember the desert heat in places like Palm Springs, Laughlin, Barstow, Palm Desert, Victorville, Lost Wages and Needles. Dry my Sweet Patoot! <grin>

Also remember the creepy crawly things resident in the Mohave when on "missions" to interrupt things the bad guys were trying to do . . . Yeah, I remember. Thumbs Down [tdn]

We'll chat about the MetroLink system at Rendezvous III - and by the by, MetroLink is the proper name - it's not Metro as I've noted some use <not you!>. Note the subtle difference in the way it is spelled - LA uses Metrolink whereas here in St. Louis it is MetroLink. Minutia, granted - but as an old song lyric stated, "Little things mean a lot." Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

The platforms at Montréal's Central Station have lighting beneath - am unaware of any maintenance or other efforts underway while the trains are at the station. VIA Rail has a major facility in Montréal where all the long distance trains receive service prior to departure. It's a fascinating set up ‘n best viewed from a vantage point in one of the local hotels with a room facing the tracks. We always request such a room, just so I can watch the make-up ‘n break-up of the trains. <cool>

Many thanx for the visit, chat ‘n foto spate . . . good stuff from the old country! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Good evening Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Leon, just an icy cold Keith's, please! I am thirsty after a pretty warm day here in the desert.

A busy day today so my visit is later than planned.

Rob –  That interurban is on the list to be refurbed. It still had the original truck at the other end. Yeah!! [yeah]

A bunch of interesting VIA photos!Thumbs Up [tup] Including one of the RDC’s! I still have to buy a model of a RDC. The only own memory I have of RDC’s is from Union Station in Washington back in 1992. Some RDC’s were parked on track 15 during daytime with their engines idling all day. All the exhaust fumes came across the platform to track 16 and were sucked into the X2000. Terrible.Grumpy [|(] We finally managed to convince Amtrak that those engines had to be stopped while the RDC’s were sitting on track 15.Mischief [:-,]

That FPA4 almost looks brand new!Smile [:)]

Fergie –  Wow , you have been busy doing all that stuff!Smile [:)]

Tom –  Almost icy conditions again?Wow!! [wow] We had 94˚ today. But we haven’t started the air conditioning yet.Smile [:)]

I don’t know if transportation planners are worse than other planners but I have never seen any project being finished to budget.Wink [;)]

What was the problem with that expansion of the light rail in St. Louis?Question [?] I think you’ve mentioned it once before but my memory...Confused [%-)] Maybe something for the Rendezvous?

I like the photos from Montréal’s Central Station but there is one detail I wonder about. I can see light under the cars. Do they perform any kind of maintenance or inspection while the train is sitting at the station? Question [?]

Interesting photos from the Skyline Car!Thumbs Up [tup] Perfect to first have dinner and then get up into the dome and enjoy the views around the track! Stealthy Pete is nowhere to be seen!Wow!! [wow]

Part III shows kind of a cloudy, maybe rainy day! Yes, I remember the disappointment with the bus ride.

Pete –  Oh, yes, I remember our trouble with the management! It included Senior Manager Lars, we just tried to help but he didn’t like it for some reason. Whistling [:-^]

Do you know that a Swede participated in the Rainhill Trials in 1829? John Ericsson built his locomotive, the Novelty, in 6 weeks and it was 4 mph faster than the Rocket. But a pipe overheated and it couldn’t be repaired quickly enough. John Ericsson later immigrated to the US and was the man behind the srew-propeller and the Monitor during the Civil War. See this link:
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USAericsson.htm

A handful of interesting small tank locomotives!Thumbs Up [tup] And a diesel! I think the Deltics are still in use today, is that correct?Question [?] Do you know why they had that white around the cab windows?Question [?]

Nick –  That is what I call a model railway, a good size layout outside!!!Wow!! [wow] Is that still in use?Question [?]

More interesting pictures from the Ffestiniog (and other) Railway(s)!Thumbs Up [tup] No roof on the cab on the Double Fairlies! As far as I know there was only one Double Fairlies in service in Sweden. I don’t know what happened to it, but I have seen some photos of it years ago.Smile [:)]

Finally some photos.

Right then Leon-better have another round over here please, and as it`s saturday lets have a deck of cards -how about a game of Killer Queen ?--1st Q. nominates a drink,2nd Q. pays for it,3rd Q. stumbles up to collect it & 4th Q. drinks it (in one)..........perhaps not then....Whistling [:-^]

O.K-another six-pack coming up-this time mostly catching up on stuff from last week that may have needed further explanation.....

img{sat1.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Earlier in the week,PETE & I touched on the Ffestiniog & Blaenau narrow gauge line that was taken over by the Great Western, well here is one of the transporter wagons they used to connect Manod quarry with the Festiniog system-They built their own 2` gauge slate hutches for this traffic-as far as I can tell, the wagons were rated at 14 tons load, which fits with 6 hutches at 2 tons load each plus just under 7 cwt each-sounds about right......

img{sat2.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

To quote the Beatles "Fixing a hole" from the inimitable "Sgt Pepper" -and when my mind is wandering....there I will go (Lalalalala)......Here we have a variation on a theme ,this time from the 4` gauge Padarn Rly,which ran from Gilfach Ddu-to Pen-Scoins,where the hutches were lowered down an inclined plane to Port Dinorwic-this port was servrd by the London & North Western Railway ( I believe ) as as well as boasting a delightfully minimalist yard (which could only be switched in one direction) also featured mixed gauge grade crossings wher the slim line was laid over the standard and removed between train

img{sat3.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

And now some for Pirate [oX)]Captain [4:-)]TOM-Having startled you with those Irish railcars the other night ( I have rarely seen anybody turn that colour without medical intervention before....) here is something more soothing-one of the three Hunslet tanks that worked the Padarn in it`s latter days---The tall chimney gives it a lovely Victorian feel-the timber additions to the cab remind one of the sometimes ferocious weather in those parts..

img{sat4.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Like the walrus & the carpenter,we have talked of many things-among them recently,Double Fairlies-Here is an 1871 view of the 1st of the kind "Little Wonder" (1869) at Portmadoc with all 4 types of the famous quarrymens coaches

img{sat5.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Here, the crew of "Taliesin"-(essentially the same as the above but modified with experience)chat with an interested party after bringing a train up from Portmadoc to Blaenau-date unknown- sat6.jpg picture by nickinwestwales}/img

Here`s a taster for next week-the engine is 19th century, odd parts of those buildings prolly date back to about the 8th century -the town itself prolly dates back to before we fell under the Roman Eagle (54 B.C or so-although the village I live in never did-for some reason the Legions just gave up with this bit of Wales-it was obviously just not worth the bother

The line is the Welshpool & Llanfair-it sits in a very green & pleasant part of the Marches ( on the Welsh side !!!)-was a common carrier, rather than the more usual Welsh lines which tended towards the single industry support ...Have visited but not yet ridden-long story--but have pix of a former German Military loco with mixed stock, also pix of the lines `home` engines ,plus what a narrow gauge Great Western branch terminus with Service facility should look like

O.K-gonna take a wee walk round the block and get some fresh air-if I dont get the last 3 days post dealt with tonight ,I promise its my first job tomorrow--principal memory from fast flipping thru everything----those Budd cars and the Can-Am retro night--this place continues to astonish  Thumbs Up [tup]Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

O.K-I have pen & paper in hand -am making notes as we speak-will slip one under the door tomorrow if that is agreeable-for now, fare thee well gentlemen ( who would have thought I would lose 17 straight hands of `Killer Queen`-Aless trusting person would suspect collusion )-

Right then-fare thee well for now and kind regards to the various ladies who indulge us...

Leon-a quick round of rums to keep out the chill dear boy-thats the ticket-don`t be shy with the bottle now,no sense in putting that cork back in -anyway,Boris has just swallowed it (Good boy !!!  )

Sleep well

Hi Tom and all.

A cup of the coffee and a couple of bacon sarnies please CINDYThumbs Up [tup], before I have to do some more yard workShock [:O] on this sunny but cooler day in Mid-MoApprove [^].

TOM We did not get the amount of rain or the severity of the storms they predicted yesterday Thumbs Up [tup]I hope it was the same in your area.Yeah!! [yeah]

Yes the attitude of the staff and volunteers at a preserved railway or museum has a great impact on whether a repeat visit is made and on the answer you give when someone asks about the place visited. I have to say though that the folks we talked to at Exporail could not have been better who seemed genuinely pleased to talk to people with more than a passing interest in trains and streetcarsApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

I was thinking those ‘gals' were the Second Class Saloon's secret weapon for the next darts contest.Shock [:O]Big Smile [:D]

Thanks for the kind words on the photosThumbs Up [tup]. Sometimes is does seem like yesterday I was at Rocket 150 not 28 years, even worse this year it will be 40 years that the last BR owned standard gauge steam engine ranApprove [^]. I bet the were not many who thought there would be still steam locomotives regularly running specials on the main line todayApprove [^].

I did not know about your appearance on TV.I would love to see it one day.Thumbs Up [tup]

Enjoyed seeing the route map of the ChaleurThumbs Up [tup], don't forget to give Sonia my regards if you see her.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

ROB Glad you liked the photosThumbs Up [tup]. Yes, a big week at Molly's,Approve [^] I know BORIS is a willing worker, but I have never found out why he has such a big smile when he goes out with his shovel to fill the pit with the mud.Shock [:O]Smile [:)]

Many thanks for those great VIA Rail photosApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. Bayview Junction must have been a great place to see trains in the 1980s.Yeah!! [yeah]. I think the VIA livery looks better than the Amtrak livery on the P42s.

I thought what goes on in the pit stays in the pitSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg].

MIKE I had not realized there was still 3 British World War I veterans still aliveBow [bow].

Thanks for the photos of the C&V locomotives at St AlbansThumbs Up [tup].

ERIC I think you and I were still in trouble with the ‘management' over the RUTH incidentShock [:O] when the Canadian Pacific Buffet Specials called at Our PlaceSmile [:)].

Yes a lot of the railway drivers in England who used to have a favorite landmark which meant they were nearly home and in steam days, for the stokers where they could stop the heavy firing. Letting the fire burn down if the loco was going on shed or getting it in a good condition for the fireman who was taking over after the crew change.

Glad you liked the photosThumbs Up [tup]. The coal advert was a clever pun on the title of the L&M celebrations, as the event was known as ‘Rocket 150' ,after the name of the locomotive that won the Rainhill Trials in 1829.Smile [:)]

Interesting photo of the Interurban carApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

Some mixed photos from me today from the late 1970s.

A while ago we were talking about steam locomotives on London Underground. They bought some pannier tanks from the Great Western to work their works trains. Some have been preserved, here is one in LT colors at Keighley on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.

A 0-6-0 Pannier tank in GWR colors at Tyesley, Birmingham.

Many of the preserved lines used Industrial locomotives to haul their trains in their early days. This is the Severn Valley Railway with Ex War Deparment 0-6-0 ST No 193 'Shropshire' built by Hunslet of Leeds.

Manning Wardle Works No 2047 'Warwickshire' at Bridgnorth on the SVR. This locomotive worked at a cement works about a mile from my old home in RugbyThumbs Up [tup], good to see her preservedApprove [^]

Narrow gauge 'Linda on the Ffestiniog Railway another Hunslet built locomotive.

In their last days on BR the Deltics allocated to Finsbury Park depot in London had a white surround to the driving cab windows. Here 55009 'Alycidon' arrives at Doncaster with a Leeds train.

Well CINDY a quick coffee pleaseThumbs Up [tup] then out out in the yard for me.

Pete.

G'day Gents!

Things are looking up after a late Friday afternoon storm system and front roared thru east-central MO here in mid-continent USA. Temps have dropped to where I feel comfortable <really don't like it above the 70s - sorry Eric!>. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Page 17 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 5:14 PM: Admittedly I've only traveled the corridor route on three occasions between Toronto ‘n Montréal. And I didn't spot ONE freight train on the right-of-way for corridor trains! No kidding . . . perhaps things have changed <for the worse> - hope not! I know there was a time when VIA Rail advertised their on-time-performance for the VIA1 crowd <my preference> between those two cities. At the prices for VIA1, I can understand why!! So, those of us in the "cheap seats" get to reap the benefits, eh Question [?]

I'd be more concerned if my Proctologist came at me with shoulder length gloves! <yikes>

Must be just the stage of life that I'm at, but I'm really taken aback when viewing film clips of the armies in WWI. Countless numbers of ‘em - getting blown up, gassed away, or victims of the Bayonet. Scores ‘n scores lined up to board awaiting ships. And now - all but a veritable handful left alive ‘round the globe. Won't be that long when the same situation will involve the WWII vets. Yeah, just aging - time marches on ‘n doesn't wait for any man.

We just tapped that keg of Keiths - hope you enjoyed it! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Can't speak for Sweden, but ‘round these parts the transportation planners are the most disingenuous bunch in the public eye - next to "genuine" politicians that is! "They" promise the moon, fall far short, ‘n wind up with cost overrides that would gag the healthiest of maggots. <barf>

Somewhere in my personal archives is a video clip of a session I had on TV with one of ‘em. I had been invited to a Sunday morning talk show to discuss the expansion of MetroLink <this area's light rail system>. Anyway, I got "in it" right away ‘n became a "folk hero" to some ‘n a "bane" to others. Only thing I'd do differently today would be to put out the running lights of that JO - off camera of course! <uh oh>

Not the most attractive of vehicles on the rails - rubber tires at that! Wow!! [wow]

As always, an interest Post to eavesdrop ‘n appreciation for the visit ‘n business! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 18 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 6:24 AM: Seeing that great shot of the VIA Rail F40PHs in front of those AMTRAK Superliners makes me wonder - why hasn't VIA contracted Bombardier to make those for them Question [?]! I'm sure there's a story there - not anecdotal crap, but the straight skinny. All the fotos I've seen of the now-defunct International ran the Amfleet equipment. Nice to see the Superliners! Thumbs Up [tup]

Nice fotos! Thumbs Up [tup] Enjoyed ‘em all - especially the Brantford shots! Yeah!! [yeah]

This time next week it will be awakening aboard the Chaleur - freshen up - stroll up to the dome with a cuppa Joe - down to the dining area for a sumptuous breakfast - back to the dome, aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh! Can't wait. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Yeah, it's been awhile since we've been treated to visits from our trolleyMAN in the daylite on Saturday morning. Yeah!! [yeah]

Just caught the news about the TTC "unannounced" strike . . . Thumbs Down [tdn]

Great to see ya ‘n appreciate the chat - after a hard nite's work! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 18 - Fergie <Fergmiester> at 8:10 AM <10:10 AM ADT>: I KNEW you could do it - an inclusive Post from our Resident irregular part-time Canadian Martime Mariner! Thumbs Up [tup]

From the "sounds" of things, you got lots done outdoors. Down here I've mowed the south forty FOUR times - grass is so thick that I doubt a herd of Yacs could get thru it. <geesh> Stalls out a 10hp lawn tractor . . . <yikes>

Can-Am Railway pleases me, but hardly stacks up against those in the mags . . . didn't create it to be anything other than fun for Moi. The guys who've visited have all enjoyed it, so that's one of life's little pleasures coming back . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

If you've "caught it," our trip to ExpoRail has been cancelled . . . the place will only be PARTIALLY open to the public. Anyway, got a few train rides cranked in - one from Brantford, On to Montréal, Qc with ROB - then a solo round trip aboard the Chaleur to Gaspé. As they say, "Wish you were here." <grin> Why Gaspé and not Halifax Question [?] Easy decision - Budd stainless steel beauties on the Chaleur - Renaissance <Chunnel Chuggers> on the Ocean. EZ decision! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Don't really envy the voyage you'll be taking - those bergs can definitely ruin a mariner's day! I KNOW you'll be on your toes . . .  Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Visit, chat, 'n BUSINESS appreciated! <KaChing> <KaChing>

Good Morning Captain Tom and Sundry

Yes top me up please and I'll have an apple Danish as they are fresh, as always.

Well yet another busy week behind me as I have the flower beds prepped and 3 yards of bark mulch on the driveway to be distributed... Hallway painted, new baseboards nailed in place in both hallway and kitchen. And I'm still slugging away at the garageSad [:(] Oh the horror!

So... Coalminer, never seen a pair of Fog glasses before, eh? most people haven't as they only come out in the fog but thanks for asking. For that I'll buy ya a Kieth's!

Mike Loved the pics of the CV. I've always liked their Steam roster and would dearly love to have one of their 2-10-4's for the MESS as they were a unique breed of engine with CN accents.

Tom and Nick thanks for sharing pics of the Layout! Tom I'never realized your layout was that big, really looks impressive!

Rob: To be honest with you I'm not completely excited about going up there this time of year as the fog will be a factor that will keep me on my toes as Bergs don't always show up on the radar all that well. We will definately be running at reduced speeds in restricted visibility.

Anyway gents thanks for the Mug!

Later All

Fergie

Eric- Interesting photo's sir sad to see an interurban in that state but I'm sure it will get a refurb at some point.

So that was stealthy Pete's best side eh Question [?] At least he didn't spill the soda on your camera,yo should see him in the pudding pit though. he's the only one to actually pin Helga for a three countShock [:O] She was all smiles at the end of it though, which is a story for another day <uh oh >

Good evening Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Leon, you must help me! I would like that Welsh Black Steak, or whatever Nick calls it. You know what I am talking about? Can you fix it? Good! A cold Carlsberg, please!

There was something I was going to tell, but right now I am having a very senior moment, so it has to wait until next time.

Tom –  I am with you!Yeah!! [yeah] I am against the tunnel they are going to build in Stockholm. I know the cost will be much higher than estimated and other problems will occur. It would be much wiser to stay on the surface and add two more tracks. But then they have to nag a little bit out of couple of old buildings (from the 1600’s) and you can’t do that. Oh, no.Sigh [sigh]

Well I am not in the position to say no (or yes) so all I can do is to stand by and let things unfold themselves.Blindfold [X-)]

About the monorail in Seattle, I stayed at a hotel in Seattle and the monorail went through that building. But I never tried it.Smile [:)]

I must have missed when those two consists stopped at “Our” Place for the special buffet! Too bad!Censored [censored] I’ll talk to the President of CanAm Railway to see if he will allow any special runs.

You are right about the owner of the yellow shirt.Yeah!! [yeah] He was working hard to wipe up all carbonated soda in his black bag when I took the picture. Wink [;)]

Nice photo of Allan’s friends!!Oops [oops] How did you learn to know them?Whistling [:-^]

CM3 –  I agree 100%, the cost for the tunnel and everything will be much higher than what they have estimated. Much higher.Evil [}:)]

DL –  Nice to see you even if it’s just for a brief moment!Smile [:)]

Rob –  Sportsman in the pudding pit? Say no more!Whistling [:-^]

Yes, what you can see in the photo from inside the view car is Pete’s best side. We saw it only for a moment, then he disappeared again.Oops [oops]

Too sad if they didn’t preserve any of those Imperial Limited cars! I’ll see if I can find any pictures of them. I am curious! Smile [:)]

Pete –  Getting short on cameras? In that case I think you are wise if you stay away from the soda pop. We will try to keep it out of reach for you.Wink [;)]

So you found the Årsta bridge? In that picture only one of them was built. I’ve been running trains across the old bridge countless times. Coming to Stockholm it was always nice to cross the bridge, I knew I would soon be on my way home. Smile [:)]

Ahh, The Titfield Thunderbolt star, L&B Lion!!! One of my favorite movies! Yeah!! [yeah]

Nice photos!Thumbs Up [tup] Does the banner in the background of the #5407 photo read Coal The Roket Fuel? Any special occasion? Ooops, looking at the next photo I see it! Smile [:)]

Mike –  Thanks for the round!Thumbs Up [tup] And thanks for the print date of the map! I asked because I couldn’t find the bridge on that map. I found Hell Gate, but no bridge. Besides that, I am also a map freak and love all kind of maps! Old ones and new ones.Smile [:)]

It’s amazing som many veterans from the Great war are still alive!Wow!! [wow] Just one from the US though. I heard recently that he was allowed to get buried at Arlington!Smile [:)]

CV-600, a beutiful locomotive! A Mountain! Built 1927 by ALCO. 73” drivers, weight 325,000 lbs. Retired 7/31/56. No one of CV “Mountains” has been preserved.

A rubber truck equipped interurban!

Hi Tom and everyone, a round for the house

I'm just going to eat some shoots and leave.

Eric, the map showing Hell Gate is dated 1909 and thanks for asking.

The last 8 known veterans of The Great War as of April 4, 2008:

Henry Allingham of Britain, aged 111. The only survivor to have served from beginning to end of the conflict, he started in the Royal Navy and then ended in the Air Force, seeing action at the Somme.

Harry Patch of Britain, 109. Called up in 1917 and saw action in the trenches of the Belgian front, including during the murderous 3rd Battle of Ypres. Injured by a shell in the same year.

Delfino Borroni of Italy, 109. Joined an elite unit in 1917 and notably fought against Austro-Hungarian forces in the Tyrol.

Francesco Chiarello, also of Italy, 109. Called up in 1918 and saw action in his country's final battles of the war.

Frank Buckles, United States, 107. Joined up by lying about his age when his country entered the war in 1917 and served as an ambulance driver in England and France.

John Babcock of Canada, aged 107. Was sent to Britain as a junior soldier with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1917, but did not see action because he was too young.

Franz Kuenstler of Germany, aged 107. Joined a Hungarian artillery unit in February 1918, and served in Italy. Only survivor of the Austro-Hungarian forces.

Claude Choules of Britain, aged 106. Joined the Royal Navy in 1916 and served in the North Sea while only a teenager.

Good afternoon Leon , justa tankard of Keith's if you don't mind. Last stop before I'm off for the day ( working the late late shift day before my vacationGrumpy [|(] arrrgh )

Tom-Ah yes people watching , should have at least an hour before my train departs ( as long as we don't get snarled by frieght trains )I did enjoy the meatings with the livestock board,I only worried for a second when I saw Biff the head inspector reach into his briefcase,I caught sight of the shoulder length rubber gloves and almost passed out ,but he bypased them for a ballpoint penBlindfold [X-)]Wow!! [wow] another close call.

I have to say that when Pete and I were signed on she took measurements ofr those matching banana yellow speedos. luckily they didn't find one in Boris's size,so they allowed for a rule change for him to wear his favourite yellow loin clothShock [:O]

I await the photo's of the subway system once the rendezvous is over with Thumbs Up [tup]I did thoroughly enjoy the CanAm photo run by's of the various versions of the Canadian.

Yes one last surviving Great War Vet for us. there still is a push for a fullstate funeral if the family so wishes it. I saw an interview with him last eyar on TV he's still quite spry for his at the time 107 yrs. He has a wicked sence of humour and was quite the good story teller.

Pete-Great photo's from over 'om as they say Thumbs Up [tup] I'll se you at Molly's next week. remeber it's the anual mudwrestling and BBQ hoedown, a can't miss.

PRR Q1 #6130 4-6-4-4 (1948) (fair use)

G'day Gents!

Got lotsa outdoor things done, like mowing the south forty <1/2 acre> with the push mower! Censored [censored] rider battery crapped out . . dontchajustluvitwenthathappens Question [?] Anyway, probably did my near-70 year old body some good . . . yeah, right! <bratzafratz> Rains are due any moment . . . torrential so "they" say. Stand by the bilge pumps, boyz, we've sprung a leak! <what's new?>

So, feeling a bit like a penny waiting for change, what better way to unwind than to mull through this day's offerings at the bar Question [?] Thumbs Up [tup]

For Rendezvous III Participants! Amtrak "Beagle" <Texas Eagle> trip has been booked! Round trip at that . . . Cardinals day game on Thursday - Amtrak on Friday - Saturday at the St. Louis Museum of Transportation, are the featured events for this year's gathering of the "Our" Place faithful! With all kinds of good things in between . . . Yeah!! [yeah]

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative):

Friday - April 25th: <all times Central daylite>:

Page 17 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 8:59 AM: Ideal world, HAH! Mine is about as helter-skelter <these daze> as they've ever been. NMRA to me means: Not My Railroad Association! <grin>

Looks like our Manager has arranged to get things squared away with the Road Kill ‘n Sausage MoSheen - and - the DoNut MoSheen. Don't know who did it, but for awhile there, we had some interesting results with holes in the middle! <ugh>

Emails continue - we're on a roll with the Rendezvous ‘n other things! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanx for the quarters, chat ‘n ROUND! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 17 - Dan <DL-UK> at 12:44 PM <6:44 PM GMT>: Glad you're back from your adventure - good deal about getting seated in the diner for both legs! Thumbs Up [tup] We await your write-up!

Visit ‘n ROUND appreciated! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

No, those "ladies" are no kin to Cindy ‘n her Ladies of Perpetual Motion ‘n Knitting Circle! Somewhere in the archives we have a foto . . . something barndad provided way back at "Our" Place I. Hmmmmm.

Chastised Question [?] You Question [?] Over flag comments Question [?] Surely you jest! Anyway, can't get "touchy" around this joint, for you'll surely wind up with the short end of the stick! <grin>

This time next week - I'm in Montréal ‘n you're heading back aboard VIA Rail's corridor train. Hope we get in on time to at least provide us with a bit of time to enjoy the station environment together. It's a grand place for people watching, while sipping a "cold one" . . . I'll have plenty of time to do that, as my train for Gaspé pulls out at 6:15 PM. Can't wait . . . feel like a kid again! Always happens when train trips are coming up. Yeah!! [yeah]

With relatives coming in <hers> just before I depart - Juneau ‘n the bride will have lots to keep them busy whilst I'm twiddling away the time enjoying the good life in Oh Canada! Yeah!! [yeah] Did I plan this right, or what!?!?! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Motor testing with my tongue Question [?] Errrrrrrrrrrrr, hadn't thought of that approach. Hmmmmmm. Just give ‘er the juice ‘n off they go! That's the way we do it with the Can-Am City Subway System <CACSS>! Haven't ventured down to the train room today, but I will. Still have to get some finishing touches done with the station. Then there's the "blocking  in" of the area before ‘n after the station. The only view available to the onlooker will be the trains at the station. It's long enough to handle four subway cars - so it won't be one of those "now you see it, now you don't" affairs. <grin>

Yes, in my discussions with Molly <and there have been a few> she's rather enamored with the two of you. Pete certainly has charmed her out of  . . . well let me restart that! Pete has been quite the gentleman, deferential to her wishes, but absolutely a flop at mastering typing techniques. You on the other hand have been more than a match for her in the mud wrestling department! She appreciates the fact that you like chocolate pudding! Didn't know Speed-o's were "in" for that kinda thing! <yikes>

Caught the reference regarding MY buying the Blue . . . that happens AFTER you, of course! Host goes first, second ‘n possibly - but no guarantee - 3rd. <uh oh>

Many thanx for the visit, good cheer ‘n chat! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 17 - Pete <pwolfe> at 3:57 PM: I see the Bar Chandler has made his Friday appearance - so all's well at "Our" Place! Thumbs Up [tup]

Must admit that when we've visited the St. Louis Museum of Transportation, I don't recall the "smugness" in attitudes that at times are prevalent with visits elsewhere. Never have figured that out - I mean why in H are they trying to attract visitors, then turning around by turning them off Question [?] Doesn't make sense to me, but what do I know, eh Question [?]

Not sure I'll remember - so, what's this about a horse ride ‘n a preserved line Question [?] Got my curiosity up, fer sure, fer sure! <grin>

Lord only knows who put those gals up to "it," but they surely aren't "homegrowns" from Mentor Village. Must be imports from cross the county line . . . strange lot over there, do strange things as I've heard - whistles, chairs, whips, etc. But nothing dirty going on! <a line from Best Little W-House in Texas!> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Recently noted that Canada has only 1 vet remaining alive from WWI - John Babcock, who resides in Spokane, WA <he became a US citizen and joined the US Army in the 1920s!>  Here in the states, our last passed away on Feb 22nd - Howard Ramsey was one month shy of his 109th B'day . . . Perhaps Allan knows if any ANZAC vets are still with us.

Fine spate of fotos, Mate! 28 YEARS ago, ehQuestion [?] Wow!! [wow] Bet it doesn't seem that long to you, eh Question [?] Thanx! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Noted that you've given up STAKE for STEAK - easier on the chompers, eh Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Many thanx for the visit, chat, < I3> Post ‘n ROUND! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Hi Tom and all.

A pint of Bathams please RUTHThumbs Up [tup].

TOM. It was a great CPR 'The Canadian' train day yesterday with Rob's post on the passenger operations on the CP and the different CP locomotive liveries on the Can-Am.Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

Good news the Can-Am Subway is in operation and the station nearing completion.Thumbs Up [tup]Bow [bow]

Good and true words for Allan Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]and may I join in a toast on ANZAC DayThumbs Up [tup]. There is a railway connection with ANZAC, as one of BR Standard Britannia class 4-6-2s was named ANZAC. Perhaps Allan saw this locomotive as it was allocated to Holyhead shed at the west end of the North Wales Coast Line and used to work the expresses along the coast line, like the Irish Mail. I think the Kinmel Park Camp, near Rhyl, where Allan was at is near the coast line.

As I say it seems as some museums don't realize that a lot of people who travel a long distance to visit a railway museum are railfans, often knowing before hand what exhibits are there. To think that going to a museum and not be able to see a lot of interesting exhibits is sadThumbs Down [tdn]. I can fully understand if it is a workshop and for safety reasons it is not possible to let the public in, but cannot understand when it is just a shed when all it takes (as far as I can see) is unlocking the door and turning the lights onConfused [%-)]. I would not mind if there were a small charge for a conducted tour of the sheds.

Remind me to tell you about a horse ride they was having at a preserved line next time we meet up.Smile [:)]

Was that Temperance photo sponsored by the brewing industrySmile,Wink, & Grin [swg].

NICK No ill effects from BORIS being in the galley last nightThumbs Up [tup]. Sounds like a great musical evening with your band.Yeah!! [yeah]

See you soon.Thumbs Up [tup]

ALLAN Glad you were able to call in the bar while you are away from home.Thumbs Up [tup]

Yes we have had some great posts latelyApprove [^] and I will look forward to your comments when you can.Thumbs Up [tup]

ERIC Thanks for the answer for the quiz and the linksThumbs Up [tup]. It seems unbelievable that Los Angeles did not accept that offerConfused [%-)]. I bet today it would have served the airport today instead of having to catch a bus to get to the railway stationThumbs Down [tdn].

I noticed the Arsta bridges in the map in the link about the new City LineThumbs Up [tup].

Great photo of the Sightseer Lounge on the Texas EagleApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup], try to keep me well away from any soda pop this timeSmile [:)] as I am running out of camerasSigh [sigh].

CM3 It is very sad that the Budd plant as gone nowThumbs Down [tdn]. It is a sad fate that as happened to so many great manufactures whose quality products we thought would be around forever,Sad [:(]. Captain [4:-)]Tom and I was discussing this at our last meeting.

DL Thanks for the round. I shall look forward to your trip report and the comparison on the dining on the train between GNER and the new franchise.

ROB.I think Molly Throttlebottom has got plans for you and me to pay for her pension by keeping us attending her classesShock [:O]Smile [:)].

Enjoyed the Classic Diesels # 31Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup].I think #2928 in the photo was the loco we did not see at Exporail.

I should have phrased the ‘Left hand' comment better, it sounded like the start of a Rugby Song.Big Smile [:D]

I heard on the radio that a lot more was made of St George's Day in England this year than usualApprove [^] but it did not say the reason. I think my bar tab can stand a ‘blue' from TomSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I have some photos taken at the Liverpool Road station site in Manchester which was the original station for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. The site is now a museum and the photos were taken at an exhibition there for the L&M 150th anniversary in 1980.

Ex L&B LION was giving rides in replica period coaches. Lion was a star in the Titfield Thunderbolt.

Class 5 4-6-0 No 5407 in LMS livery. The locomotive is still working main line steam specials today.Bow [bow].

LNER  A3 class 4-6-2 No. 4472 Flying Scotsman.Note the advert for coal in the backgroundSmile [:)]

Good afternoon Ruth,I hope that you got Boris to finish cleaning the donut mosheen, you should have seen the health dept. forms I had to fill out to get it recertified as being able to produce product fit for human consumptionGrumpy [|(] No No Boris , they are supposed to be Apple fritters not apple critters ( I see  now where the cross contamination came from now Sigh [sigh] )

Well Ruth just a Keith's I'm still coughing up hairballs from those donuts from yesterday.

Tom-Yes I got booked on the 3:40 back no ,connnection throught o Brantford but that's fine that's what Go transit is for. Still don't know the train number ( without looking at the ticket Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] ) BTW Molly has labeled me us non-reformable ( I used spell check and still managed to spell it wrongShock [:O] ) she just keeps me around because I'm such a sportman in the pudding pit Whistling [:-^]

I did see the flag thank-you I just didn't comment as I was so roundly chastised for mentioning my feelings on it the last timeSigh [sigh]

Good to hear that the CanAm subway is 99% operational ( just don't let Boris near the controls ) now when starting up the car do you first test the motor leads with your tongueDead [xx(] Don't get me started on the cost overruns of anything public transit related Censored [censored] I'm suure that we are of the same mind.

Hopefully those shots of Allan's friends are not  a time advanced photo of Cindy and the Ladies of perpetual motionShock [:O]

CM3-Had to giggle about the possum glazed donuts mmmm do they come with pink sprinkles Question [?]

Eric-Nice shot of the inside of the dome car, I see that you just about captured stealthy Pete, was that his best side Question [?]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I don't think any of those original CPR cars from that train are left. There is a restored wooden baggage/combine at the Steam and tech Museum in Ottawa that's owned by the Bytown Historical Society folks, and they run occational steam, excurtions with it and their CPR Pacific.it's the same vintage and well could have been part of that train 1903 built I believe.

The only reason I can think for the shorter time the one way is less grades and fewer station stops. Some of those early trains stopped at every barn in every hick town along the route.

Thanks for the link I'll check it out.

Nick -Hope the day goes well for you. I must say that Boris peerformed admirably in teh galley yesterday,H&H carefully watched him.,No non fish parts made it into the deep fryer <uh oh >

Nice to see that Allan and Dan were able to check in, thanks guys Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete-There was a joke there with regards to your left hand being naughty.. however this is a PG forum so I won't delve deeperLaugh [(-D]Mischief [:-,]

Boris is most certainly not enviromentally friendly no matter if it's before or after PPF, it only changes the speed ( and volume )at which he works. Shock [:O]

Yes St Georges Day at the pub would have been a treat, they saved their deck oppening for that day Thumbs Up [tup] Well I'm sure that Tom will buy us a blue in your honourWhistling [:-^]

Good Morning Barkeep and All Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  ‘Nother lovely day here in the coalfields although we may get thunderstorms later on, but it's nice now.  Gas holding at $3.65.

Rob was by with comments and information.

Pete was by as well - Budd was pretty well covered up at that time, not that they were unhappy to get the order.  Their plant and just about everything else is gone now.  Enough to make you weep.

Nick was in - expect to hear from you once the sun gets to the west side of the building (lol).

Allan visted, too.

Eric - I couldn't play the quiz because I had no idea - thanks for the information in the links.

$2.5 billion?  Multiply that 5X and you'll have a more accurate figure unless the engineers have some good ways of cost containment.

OSP - E-mails rec'd and responses sent.  I watched the Cards and Pirates last night - good game for the Birds with some ferociously good infield play on both sides.

Canadian material is always good - lovely picture of the Budd diner, and I remember that flag very well.  I enlarged the passenger pictures on the CanAm - nice!  NMRA standards are like any other in that they apply to an ideal world.  The donut  machine is in trouble?  Well, I'll pass on the venison crullers but how about a dozen of the ‘possum glazed?  As Granny once said, "He's mine; I saw him first!"

Work safe

Cross-Canada rail adventure IS definitely a hi-lite for us - even though we never experienced the original route. What we did see <twice each way> was absolutely magnificent by any standard I know of. That equipment is on the way OUT - "word" is that Colorado Railcar will be manufacturing those single level full dome cars of theirs - don't know about the coaches or bedroom cars. Sparse info at best - but CHANGE is on the way - count on it. So, if you ‘n your lady are planning a trip, don't procrastinate, Mate - don't put it off! Thumbs Up [tup]

Rob's comments on underground construction vs above are RIGHT ON! We went thru that in these parts with a portion of our MetroLink expansion. The costs are astro for tunneling . . . but "they" seem to do it anyway. And you wouldn't believe the cost-overrides due to infrastructure realignments, etc. Interesting conversation - just haven't been able to ‘chime in' . . .

Thanx for the info on the monorail - I've ridden the one in Seattle . . .

Good evening Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Yes, Leon, I am kind of late but I am raedy to have something to eat! I think it is a good evening for my favorite Rumpsteak Café de Paris! Yes, as usual!

I'll start with providing the correct Quiz answer: The Disneland-Alweg monorail was designed/constructed by Alweg in Germany. Alweg was founded by Swedish industrial magnate Dr. Axel Lennart Wenner-Gren in January 1953, based in Fühlingen, Germany, near Cologne. The Alweg name is an acronym of Dr. Wenner-Gren's name (Axel Lennart WEnner-Gren). More info on this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALWEG

More about what could have been in Los Angeles:

http://www.monorails.org/tmspages/LA1963.html

Tom –  That is my point about taking more photos of the CanAm layout, there are so many details I missed last time and taking pictures from different angles. As you mentioned, there is a lot to view! Smile [:)]

I actually had the location typed under my picture last night, but I must have missed to copy that line when I copied the rest of the text. Anyway, the picture was taken at Atchison Railway Museum, Atchison, KS. It shows Burlington Northern caboose #10410. Originally a CB&Q caboose. The museum plans to restore it to the CB&Q colors.

The Scenic Dome Route across Canada!Thumbs Up [tup] Hopefully I will win the Powerball jackpot soon...
The info on CPR is interesting even if the Canadian today is run by VIA. Too bad they changed the route to the CN route. But there are very beuatiful views in those photos and I guess they are all taken along the present CN route.Smile [:)]

Perfect timing with the photo runs of the different editions of the Canadian!!Yeah!! [yeah] Did the Maroon Beauty stop behind Our Place during that photo run?Question [?] Maybe it is time for a new photo run in a few weeks!?!Wink [;)]

CM3 –  More info on the Stockholm Big Dig on this link (in English):
http://www.banverket.se/en/Amnen/Corrent-Projects/The-City-Line-in-Stockholm.aspx

The yellow dotted line on the map/photo is the future underground line. The Årsta Bridges are over the water at the bottom of the map/photo.

More tracks are needed through Stockholm, the traffic now is at its max capacity. The total cost is calculated to $2.5 billion.Smile [:)]

Rob –  The new underground line will certainly be electrified like most railroads in Sweden. See my comments to CM3 for info in English.

Interesting article on Passenger OPS of teh CPR!Thumbs Up [tup] The Imperial Limited, launched 1899, must have been something very special! 100 hours across the country at an average speed of 29 mph! Is any of the original cars preserved?Question [?]

Pete –  I know you are very stealthy!! Very, very stealthy!! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanks for the additional info on the Ffestiniog Railway! Thumbs Up [tup]

I am afraid your second guess is wrong. Correct answer above. Smile [:)]

Nick –  I’ll pick “kicking back with our buddies night!”Wink [;)] We all need that every now and then!

Allan –  Thank you for the round! Looking forward to your next visit!Smile [:)]

Sooon!!

G'day Gents!

Pleased to report that the Can-Am City Subway System <CACSS> is operational! All track has been permanently connected ‘n glued down onto roadbed which in turn was glued to the 3" foam insulation board forming the base. Exception - that portion at the station - still have to wire in a device that will automatically stop ‘n start the trains with a pre-set delay. Should be "cool"! Subway station nears completion - fotos taken of progress, but will be withheld ‘til June! <sorry> Want the guys coming to Rendezvous III to get first crack at seeing ‘n operating it! Thumbs Up [tup]

Thought I'd get a leg-up on the day's activities . . . doesn't hurt! Thumbs Up [tup]

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative):

Thursday - April 24th <all times Central daylite>:

Page 17 - CM3 Shane <coalminer3> at 8:35 AM: Appears we Posted at the same time. What, no prize Question [?] Thought the MagMoguls would at least provide us with a round trip aboard the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver! <geesh> Anyway, glad to see ya! Thumbs Up [tup]

Great stuff regarding those 20-point turns. Of course not humorous to those in the vehicles, structures struck by the vehicles or the rescue people attempting to dislodge the occupants of those vehicles. Got a laff outta it anyway! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

My passenger fleet is comprised of ConCor <VIA Rail> - Walthers TrainLine <Amtrak> AHC/Rivarossi <VIA Rail> and RDCs from LifeLike Proto1000 <BC Rail ‘n VIA Rail>. The ConCor cars are very light and require more weight than NMRA calls for <what do THEY know about MY pike, I wonder Question [?]> Anyway, the Walthers stuff is fine as are the Rivarossi cars. LifeLike's are very heavy since they really are locomotives - even the dummies are heavy. ConCor was the only manufacturer I could find that had the Budd VIA Rail cars - before VIA decided to emblazon the Canadian flag on the corrugated sides. Anyway, love ‘em all! Thumbs Up [tup]

Been flirting with the 80s here for a few days, but thanx to a few showers ‘n a front coming in - temps are back to comfortable - muggy though. Just can't wait ‘til the "dog days" get here! <aaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh>

I think you'd really "dig" the trip I'm taking up to Gaspé. It's only a matter of time before that track gets ripped up . . . Pete has commented on it a few times. Another factor is the age of those marvelous Budd cars - they have surely surpassed their shelf-life, in spite of some fine refits. That's the thing with ‘wanting' ‘n ‘doing.' Just happy that I'm still able to ‘do' ‘n that the equipment is still on the line. Thanx for the well wishes! Thumbs Up [tup]

Many thanx for the ROUND ‘n quarters! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 17 -Rob <trolleyboy> at 11:10 AM: Figured you'd get the return trip done, especially since I provided you with everything other than the engineer's employment ID number! Train #, indeed! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

That feature on The Canadian was reworked - considerably. With only ONE Resident Canadian on board - figured you'd pick up on it! <geesh> Didn't even comment about YOUR flag - which I provided for YOU. <triple geesh> Yeah, I know - no one who stops by gives a Rat's Patoot about stuff from many of us - at least that's what we've been told - apparently by someone who keeps track of the intent of those dropping by <anon or otherwise> . . . <snark> <snark> <snark>

This time next week we'll have connected at Union Station and should be at the St. George Arms pub! <urp> I'm looking forward to those MULTIPLE Blues from Rendezvous I . . . bet you didn't know the INTEREST accrues on beer, eh Question [?]

Next day we'll be on our way to Montréal aboard VIA Rail. Let's hope the weather conditions are good for the visibility through the dirty windows. <grin> Guessing you opted for the earlier train - Brantford connection Question [?]

The Chaleur gets serviced in Montréal, so at least I'll depart with clean glass - interesting to note how things deteriorate as the trip progresses. Since it's the same equipment for the return trip from Gaspé, dome glass should have a good splattering of bugs ‘n grime by the time we wake up Sunday AM . . .

Oh, meant to tell the guys that someone had run through some road-kill in the DoNut MoSheen by mistake. Don't know if anyone got A-ROUNDTUIT for cleaning . . . hope those DoNuts didn't have a "gamey" taste! <yuck> No extra charge, of course! <grin>

Gotta laff outta that story about the guy who expected dry land, but wound up in the drink. <yikes> I remember winding up in a corn field - but that's a story for Rendezvous III - OR perhaps our train ride to Montréal! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Appreciate the support over on "my other Thread" - here Question [?] Hey! You're a paid employee! <grin> Good to see ya, anyway! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 17 - Rob <trolleyboy> at 4:23 PM: Okay, that does it! YOU WILL attend a crash course on using the spell check! Molly is waiting . . . What is a "fright only" railway Question [?]

Okay, okay - yeah, you're being picked on! But look at it this way - suppose no one cared Question [?] Then again, we know "someone" does! <grin>

Fine stuff on the Canadian Pacific - a fine supplement to this UN-OH-FISH-UL Theme Day! So to you, a free stein of the brew of your choice for the support! <urp> Watch him Boris . . . don't let him pour a 2nd . . . <uh oh> Pete will probably gripe about "where's mine???>

Page 17 - Pete <pwolfe> at 4:54 PM: We had a bit o' rain this morning, but nothing heavy. Keeping any eye on "the" wall . . . fine so far. <fingers crossed!>

Actually had you decided to come along, we'd be going up to Gaspé . . . after visiting with Rob of course. ExpoRail wudda be cancelled out as I dearly wanted at least one more shot at those Budd domes! Yeah!! [yeah] Absolutely was fortunate in getting in touch with the fellow who was so helpful to the both of us last year. He's the top guy, so there's little doubt that if ‘n when you decide to use the "credit" - contact him if you have problems. You've got <or should have> his contact info from last year . . . <grin> Probably wound up with that ExpoRail book of yours! Gone-zo . . . <oooooops>

Eternally grateful for your "heads up" - I had believed them when they said they were "open" on May 3rd . . . never thought it was "partially." Censored [censored] Banged Head [banghead] You'd think they wudda . . . nahhhhhhhh. Thumbs Down [tdn]

Two finger typing is NOT an OP-SHUN. Admitting that you're failing is a sure-fire way to NEVER get on top of this. C'mon, you can do it! Using only 2 of 10 fingers shouldn't be all that hard - it's simply a mental thing - train yourself ‘n in no time you'll be on your way. Think of it this way - you can drink a brew with either hand, can't you Question [?] <grin>

Are you SURE it was Clyde Question [?] Bet a couple of guys up in Montréal would be able to tell! <uh oh>

Glad you enjoyed the CP spread . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

I see you're back to only ONE chip with the fish! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanx for the continuing support, fine < I3> Post ‘n ROUND! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 17 - Nick <nickinwestwales> at 7:10 PM <1:10 AM Friday GMT>: The Mighty Man has returned - but seemingly a bit outta gas. No problem, we can excuse that, especially given all of the fine inclusive, humor filled 'n interesting fotos coming from Wales!

BUT! You've been flirting with Rules Violations, Mate! So here's your FINAL reminder - Rule #1 - Greet the barkeep upon entering - Rule #2 - Order drink or food. Otherwise you'll be on the short end of a <tweeting>!

Thanx for keeping us in mind . . . Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Boris in the galley - what hath Gawd wrought Question [?]

Well then gentlemen, please excuse the lack the lack of any sort of responses- thursday night is band practice/therapy/kicking back with our buddies night (take your pick ) and tonight we didnt have a drummer so we assembled in our cottage instead-had  guitars in 3 different tunings,a mandolin, numerous harps,my fretless bass, and Missisnick singing her heart out covering some complely improvised versions of songs from our set-has been an exceptional evening -the down side is that I am unable to make any useful contribution tonight ,other than to note that there are loads of points I want to respond to-Give me a day or two

BORIS is in charge of the galley tonight--looks like a quiet night,so lets`s give him a chance....He is eager to please-and lets be fair, that is rare enough in these latter days

O.K-have achieved critical mass/hit the wall-be happy & well,speak soon

HI Tom and all.

A pint of Bathams please RUTHThumbs Up [tup].

TOM. Hope you are avoiding the heavy rain we have been having this morningYeah!! [yeah].

Real glad you have got the Canadian trip sortedThumbs Up [tup] out after finding that ExpoRail would not have all the sheds openThumbs Down [tdn], I read that was sometimes the case from a letter in one of the British railway magazines I have. The more I think about it the more I realize how lucky we were on the day we were there, being Museum day opening early and able to see the great exhibits in Shed #5Thumbs Up [tup]. I don't think you would have liked to see a grown man cry if I could not have seen the A4 60010.Smile [:)] Glad the VIA man you got the name of was able to fix you up with the trip to GaspeThumbs Up [tup] I feel sure it will be all the way by train this timeYeah!! [yeah], as you say, good food, Budd cars and the Dome car it does indeed not get much betterApprove [^].

I don't think my keyboard is quite ready for my two-finger typing just yetShock [:O] and the left hand is not behaving itselfSigh [sigh] so it has been relegated to just working the shift key as punishmentSmile [:)].

Yes talking to the outsource people can be bad for one healthBanged Head [banghead]. When my wireless connection was playing up with the intermittent fault I could not get any helpThumbs Down [tdn]. Luckily the part we though that might be causing the problem was the cause, and the puter was back to normal after a replace part was fitted.

Great posts to celebrate what would have been the Canadian Pacific Canadian's 53rdHappy B-Day [bday]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup].

I bet the Budd Company was very pleased to receive that order for those 173 carsYeah!! [yeah]. I wonder why steam was still used as late as 1959 when they had those F units,Confused [%-)] I guess steam was used very rarely considering the dome cars in the consist. The Budd dining car as captured the bygone elegance of an early age to meApprove [^].

Great photos as wellApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup], showing the stunning sceneryWow!! [wow], I love those ‘glint' shots where the setting sun makes the cars look gold platedYeah!! [yeah] and the one with the moose by the dome car is a classic.Bow [bow]

I am just glad Clyde got the blame for the noise instead of meSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg].

NICK I guess a journey in the carriage behind the goods wagons on the Donegal would best is described as ‘leisurely' especially if shunting to serve the goods yard en route was involved, but just for the chance to do it today.Yeah!! [yeah]

Many thanks for the info on the Festiniog and  Blaenau railwayThumbs Up [tup], looking forward to the photosYeah!! [yeah]. I doubt when it was in narrow gauge operation those who worked it would have thought that, one day, an American Built 121 ton 3,300 HP diesel locomotive (which we had on our special train) would work over the trackbed.

Enjoyed the layout photos and descriptionsApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. It seems the interchange yard and the Maple Leaf Tavern is very busyYeah!! [yeah]. I wonder if the Tavern would be up for a triangular darts contestQuestion [?]Smile [:)]

ROB Thanks for the roundThumbs Up [tup]. I don't know whether we class BORIS as environmentally friendly when he is switching the Can-Am yard at the back of the Mentor InnBig Smile [:D], I think it depends on if it is before he has the PPFs or not.Shock [:O]

I think it will be a lot harder for me to leave the St George's Arms than for me to enter itYeah!! [yeah]. Yesterday would have been a good day to be there as it was St George's Day.

In the latest issue of Trains Magazine there is an interesting article on the VIA Rail RDCs that runs between Victoria and Courtenay and the Koaham Shuttle that runs between Lillooet and D'Arcy in British ColumbiaThumbs Up [tup].

I am sure you will have a great time riding the rails with Tom.Yeah!! [yeah]

CM3 I bet getting that 18-wheeler out of the neighbors yard drew quite a crowd; in the UK the big trucks usually save themselves to get wedged under railway bridges. Alan recently sent me an e-mail with true smartCensored [censored] answers people have given. One was a truck that was wedged under a bridge and when the police arrived the officer said, "Got Stuck then". To which the trucker replied. "No I was delivering this bridge and run out of diesel"Smile [:)]

ERIC Yes, one speed but very stealthySmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I have had look at the line through Ffestiniog & Blaneau, thanks to Nick in giving the correct name for the lineThumbs Up [tup]. The narrow gauge F&B opened in 1868,if I have read the chart right. It said the F&B was vested in the Great Western in 1883 when, I suspect, it was converted to standard gauge as the connecting Bala & Ffestiniog Railway opened in 1882. I guess the GWR bought the F&B to stop the L&NWR from advancing westward from Blaenau. The Bala & Ffestiniog became a part of the GWR in 1910, although I guess it was very close to the GWR before the official take over.

Can I have another guess at it your QuizQuestion [?]. Is the Monorail going through the Swedish part of Europe in Disney world.Question [?].

Well RUTH I see ROB as been back in the bar with Classic Diesels of the CPR and Captain [4:-)]TOM with the Canadian trains on the Can-Am Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]so let me get a round and join in Captain [4:-)] Tom's toast to a great trainYeah!! [yeah] while I study the two posts.Thumbs Up [tup]. Then the Fish 'N' ChipDinner [dinner].

G'day Gents!

Guess I should be happy with small favors - the ONLY thing gone wrong <thus far today> has been the loss of my Post! So, here it comes again . . . <grumble> <mumble> <bratzafratz>

On a positive note, we've been visited by CM3 Shane 'n Rob <twice> today! Thumbs Up [tup]

* * * * *     * * * * *     * * * * *

A couple years ago the Can-Am Railway had a commemorative run for the 51st Anniversary of THE CANADIAN  . . . so here are a few fotos that only the old timers will recall . . . that's Pete - Eric - CM3 Shane - Rob 'n Nick! <grin>

(1) Where else but here would you see something like this Question [?] All the editions of that fine train!

(2) Two interations passing "Our" Place!

(3) Maroon beauty on the east side!

<Yeah, I know the beaver heralds are missing from the F8As - but at least the cars have 'em!>

(4) Action red on the west side!

(5) Gotta luv those Park cars!

(6) Three editions of Park cars at Can-Am City's Union Station!

<Should be noted that everything shown, except the VIA Budd equipment 'n F40PHs are housed in one of my display cases. None of that stuff has been detailed . . . . just haven't gotten A-ROUNDTUIT!>

Ring the bell, Boris - a toast to the train named The Canadian! <CHEERS!> <clink>

Enjoy! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good afternoon gents. I see that Tom's still pounding out the CPR pasenger train info so here's a re-worked piece to add to the muddle.Leon I could use a Keith's while I make sure this doesn't wide page the ole thread.

CLASSIC DIESELS # 31 PASSENGER OPS OF THE CPR PT 1

Today the Canadian Pacific is a fright only railway,    accept on the portions of the line that hosts VIA, GO Transit,Amtrak, and the odd private passenger run Rockey Mountaineer. The CPR has started running their own "cruise like" passenger service THE ROYAL CANADIAN PACIFIC ( on occation steam powered by Hudson 2816 ) but this is a rare milage extra ( with an extra high price )However during the CPR's first 80 yeasr of existance, passenger service was a vital piece of their corporate existance, in fact they did become the world's greatest transportation system with their operations of local, midrange, and transcontinenetal passenger trains married to Hotels, resorts, Steamships and an Airline ! At one point the CPR concidered their passenger service(s) an important cog in their corporate wheel.

A CPR Jubilee that is preserved at Exporail in Montreal, backbone of the early commuter services.

It's most recognized passenger service was the transcontinentals and the hotels/ resorts that were built to be serviced by them, however beside giving the "gentry " Van Horne's amazing scenery and hotels these train also served as the colinization route for the influx of settlers to the Western provinces of the Dominion, and thus helped grow the powerfull industrial base that the CPR thrives on in the west today. So here's a few examples of CPR's passemger services.

The first cross-country trains provided by the CPR came on line in 1886. These were the ATLANTIC EXPRESS ( eastbound ) & THE PACIFIC EXPRESS (Westbound )For these trains new cars were built with exteriors of varnished mahogany, with interiors of satinwood, trimmed with inlaid brass and mother of pearl. These were typical Clerestery roofed cars of the time. This service took approx 139 hours to cross the country, giving an average speed of 21mph for the length of the 2,906 mile trip !

In 1899 The CPR launched  a new trancontinental train, calling it THE IMPERIAL LIMITED,this train used new cars that the railway had said were "near perfection in their appointments".The name of this train was supposed to reflect the CPR as an all imperial British route to the Orient. This train was operated seasonally ( spring-summer ) on an improved schedule of 100 hours and an ave speed of 29mph.The June 1909 timetable shows train #1 The Imperial Limited departing Montreal at 10:10am arriving Fort William at 8:30pm after travelling the north shore of superior all day.Arrival at Winnipeg was at 9:45am the next morning, crossing the the prairies for most of the day arriving at Calgary at 5:20pm. the Great Divide between Alberta and BC was to be reached at 10:00pm This schedule didn't allow westbound passengers to see the Rockies or Selkirks in daylight. However a noon departure from Kamloops four days after leaving Montreal allowed the passengers to see the Thompson and Fraser river canyons with a night time arrival at Vancouver at 10pm.

In 1900 the Imperial Limited began operating a section via Moosejaw sask to the CPR / SOO interchange at Portal North Dakota, with cars running through between Chicago and Vancouver. This was done to further exploit the CPR Hotels and Resorts in BC by bringing them and even wider clientelle.

In 1919 The Imperial limited was replaced by the Trans-Canada Limited. This name had started to be used by the summer trains in 1907, it was formally changed in 1919 as this train had even higher service standards than it's predessessors. It was an all first class sleeper train using seven compartment one drawing room cars and a three compartment one drawing room observation car.Plus dinning car service between Montreal and Vancouver.A Toronto section connected at Sudbury. This train operated on an even faster timetable 93 hours 30 min from Montreal to Vancouver,92 hours 15 min,in the opposite direction.By june of 1925 four more hours had been cut from this service with the advent of newer faster locomotives. The CPR hearalded this in their advertisments of the time pushing their convienient arival and departure hours to all the major cities and resorts.

  •    By 1931 CPR's trancontinental services reached thier peak with four trains in each direction over the system. These were.
  • The all sleeping car Trans-Canada Limited, between Montreal and Vancouver with a conecting section to Toronto.
  • The Mountineer, an all sleeper train between Chicago and Vancouver, operating via SOO LINE east of Portal
  • The Montreal-Vancouver Imperial carrying coaches and sleepers, including carsconnected at MooseJaw with Soo-Pacific Express to and from Chicago The Dominion, a Toronto-Vancouver caoch and sleeper train that also handled shorter distance cars between Toronto-Winnepeg,Fort William-Winnipeg, Winnipeg-Calgary , Medicine Hat-Calgary, and Calgary -Vancouver.
