WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE RAILROADS WANTING TO GO TO A ONE CRAFT OPERATING JOB. JUST IMAGINE YOU ARE WORKING FOR A MAJOR RAILROAD AND CRAFT AUTONOMY NO LONGER EXISTS? INSTEAD OF HAVING AN ENGINEER, A CONDUCTOR, AND/OR A BRAKEMAN YOU WORK ON A LIST THAT CAN YOU CAN BE CALLED FOR ANY JOB.

The language filter wont allow me to express myself as fully as I would like to on this subject.
If I had wanted to be a utility man, I would have gone to work for the light company
.
Stay Frosty,

Most places are going to that jack of all trades mentality.I am qualified to sub for anyone in my area.I can drive a forklift straddlestacker(goes 2 stories high) and tug trains if someone goes on vacation in my old building. If they want railroaders to do more they better open up their pocket books but sometimes that isn't enough.
stay safe
joe

What we are being told is that it will be one board. everyone will be a qualified engineer. senority will dictate who runs and who sleeps. but the pay will be the same.

I believe that the one craft idea sucks. If they want to do that, then everybody should be paid at the highest rate that any of the jobs that they cover bring. I would be happy to get called as a helper if I were getting u-man rate. What is better, having somebody do a job that they specialize in every day, or hit and miss with a guy that is a switchman 90% of the time, and gets called as a hogger the other 10%? As a conductor, I would be more than nervous if my hog only runs occasionally, as opposed to a hog that runs constantly. The RR's motto..........Uphill slow, downhill fast, tonnage first, safety last...........

Yea, the UTU and BLE have been fighting for so long, they do not know any other way.

In the meantime, the railroads sit back, watching and smiling as the debate goes on about who is more important, who should be paid more, who in really in charge, etc.

The age-old motto: "Divide and Conquer" seems most appropriate; or perhaps "United we stand, divided we fall".

I work in aircraft completion. We started the same thing about March this year. Our manager wants a big promotion and is most likely telling his boss how great it is working. Problem is it is not working. It has slowed down our production, our planes are going to paint without beging audited (which should happen before they go to paint). People are very p***** off and people are quitting right and left. The morale is at an all time low. And it is holding up the other hangars in doing their jobs. People who have told our manager "it is not working" have been walked out.
They do not want to hear the truth. And if this isn't bad enough, they are going to start this concept in the other hangars. OH BOY ! ! !

Big business isn't it wonderful. [xx(]

TRADITION?? Tradition don't make profit! Railroads are not in business to make employee's happy, they are in business to make stock holders happy. This is definetly a Union problem. The Unions are going to have to prove that keeping job classifications is more efficent.
Show me a railroad that operates by tradition, and I will show you one thats bankrupt.

Frnakly, I's suprised this hasn't started to happen already as the numbers of post '85 hires begins to eclipse the older folks. Most post '85s are from the ranks of trainmen and many are quickly trained as engineers giving the companies a lot of opportunities to use us as APEs...
