Went and took brother some goodies.Nurse asked why he and I are so interested in trains.Ns did run some intersting stuff.Even saw a scale test car on an eastbound. On the Ns wabash side train 189 got lined through St.Joe(across csx) with no problems. He was only 13,000 ft long today.Dispatcher told him to pace himself to New Haven.Going to see who is on playing football.

Enjoyed the sunshine today and went to Deshler.Heard on the scanner that there was a problem at Leipsic and trains had to go 10 mph over the diamond.Csx was in it's usual hurry up and wait mode.Took care of a couple of chores at the park as well.Guessers say we have something coming for early in the week.We will see.

Car looked so much better when I saw it at Union Station in Chicago in 1959 or 1960.

Well gee-whiz... When it saw you 60 years ago, you looked in better shape too...Clown(I resemble that remark too)...I see no evidence of an Amtrak era 800XXX number in the photo. Driven only by little old hoggers on alternate Sundays every once in a great while?

The last few days they've had wind problems out in Wyoming. Some gusts predicted to be 100 mph, don't know if they actually reached it. 100 mph pretty much stops everything.

Jeff

Jeff hopefully you fared well during the derecho back in August. We got the aftermath this way with 60-70MPH gust. I had read at Atkins, IA measured winds gust were recorded at 126MPH. Cedar Rapids had a gust that measured around 140MPH.

And so did Marion- we lost around 50% of our tree cover, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a homeowner in town with no structural damage.  Personally, we lost a couple of shingles, the garage door (which faces west) was damaged, and had a tree in the back yard uprooted.  Fortunately it didn't land on anything.  A neighbor across the street from us with a two-story had the fireplace chimney enclosure ripped off of the north side of the house.  There were a couple of three-story apartment complexes on the south side of Marion that completely lost part of the top floor!

The most aggravating thing about the derecho for me was that the power went out BEFORE THE STORM EVEN GOT HERE.  As a result, my weather station on the roof (which survived) never recorded a thing.

...the garage door...

When the 1995 derecho struck here there were similar issues, albeit spotty, but one that struck me as I toured one damage area the next day, was that all of the garage doors on one road were stove in.  They all faced the wind.

On ours three of the four panels have "wrinkles" in them, and a noticeable bow in the middle.  The lowest two lag bolts on the north track were pulled out of the door frame, but I was able to reattach them.  The original door installer (two years old) came out and scheduled us to get a replacement, but not until late January/early February, they're that booked right now.

Meanwhile, in the next state to the west........ Got asked a couple questions on finding old map and record data for Beatrice NE for a surveyor in Mookie-land.. Wrinny put Beatrice in one of his blogs several years back. Was that ever a hoppin' place, railroad-wise, in the past.(4 railroads + stated goal of interurban OLB that never got there) Now it's just the stub end of the line on one lonely railroad branch. Sad.

(If you ever wondered where Beatrice Foods and Meadow Gold dairy began, now you know.)

Snow isn't so bad for now.

Been watching it accumulate on the Deshler cam.  We're due for some fairly soon.  Most of it will be to the south of me, though.

We had bitter winds from due north, but no snow except for a few flurries in the air.  They're getting more of it in northwestern Indiana.

Today we got a call from my favorite restaurant in Gary, just checking up on us!  And now you know how they stay our favorite place.  We're going to have to head out there and make their place our destination, even if we don't order much of a meal there (my appetite is still appalling in a miniscule way, but the weight somehow doesn't plummet with it).

While out mailing packages today, I encountered a westbound manifest freight on our main line.  I was surprised to see, in the middle of the train, a loaded string of welded-rail flat cars owned by the CWR Transportation Company (reporting marks CWRX...I think I see a trend here).  The cars I saw came from three or four different number series (they still looked the same...faded black with white reporting marks and numbers).  None of those series contained CWRX cars I'd seen before.  I'm going to be busy tomorrow...

Yes, Joe, that's the place.  They've stayed closed on Saturdays for a while now.  Most of their business comes from the surrounding industries and local fire and police personnel.

An well placed holiday display was set up a few nights ago at the park across from the Ft. Madison IA railfan cam - to see it you must view after local sunset. I have not yet found out if the park display was present in prior years.

Well CSX did not hit a tractor trailer that snagged on our local crossing at about 1530 local time.  It was a FED EX tractor trailer that  had both its landing gear not all the way retracted and its tandems too far back on the trailer.  .  Snagged on one of the rails so reported that to CSX as well.  Waiting to see if FED EX will call be back about the problems noted.

FED EX did not call back but CSX did because FED EX driver gave some false info. CSX told me inspector was on way to scene..
