evening

Had a pretty good day today. The Sante Fe engine we were looking at had the emd builder plate taken off.We couldn't see on the other side of the loco without tresspassing so that project is on hold.Went to Deshler.Csx was still log jammed.Did get some pictures and documents in frames in the museum. Some of the pictures were gluded to poster board(ugh).Friend finally got a call for a westbound. We'll see how long it takes him to come west.

evening

Friend left his coat at our house yesterday.Gave me a chance to go up along the Chicago line. They were single tracking near Delta. 56 K (Ns grain train) had to hold at Wauseon due to the maintainers hitting a shunt on a crossover. It also had the N&W unit 8103 on the point.Came home and neighbors had made some spooky cookies for being on leaf patrol.Tomorrow its back to work.

I spent a good deal of Saturday on the radio - amateur radio - for the New York QSO Party (QSO means conversation).  The intent is to contact all 62 NY counties.  I got 21 counties, as well as 11 states and Quebec.  Several I contacted on different "bands" so they count as extra contacts.

No record breaker, but it was fun.  Heard one fellow say he'd contacted all 50 states during the contest.  Conditions weren't all that good for contacts within NY during the day, but picked up in the late afternoon, which is when I got most of the NY counties.

Ham radio is fun!

CSX  PSR strikes again.  We have an empty northbound Hertzog train including a single loco parked on our siding.  It has not been split and has blocked one grade crossing.  The kicker ?  parked here since late Tuesday afternoon.  It is now Sunday evening.

Have suitable complaints been registered?

When I got to Jacksonville just after Christmas 2019, the FEC had a Herzog empty ballast train parked on a track under the Baymeadows Road overpass.  When I headed back North on March 2, the train was still parked there and had not turned a wheel in over two months.

At this time snow just started falling in Rochelle IL as seen on the webcam. Meanwhile three more days of 90F weather are forecast here without any rain in sight.

Still parked.  2nd hand was told the city mannager was told that loco had a broken part that was hard to find (  CSX  #561 ).   Going to talk to him this evening and confirm that is what was told.  Can you believe ?

WAG - seized traction motor.  Loco facility at Tilford was probably closed when Tilford was closed.  I would have thought loco people from Waycross would have been relatively 'johnny on the spot' within a day or two along with Cranemasters or some other contractor to change out the traction motor and at the very least install a idle axle (wheel set without traction motor) in place of the defective one.

Not moving a locomotive that has a frozen traction motor is SOP.  Letting a locomotive sit there for a week in such a condition WAS NOT the norm when I was working.

It would be cool to save some of the bricks for future projects.

Used brick is not that unusual in new construction.  In the area around the office building where I usually work, I observed bricks being salvaged as part of a building demolition.  They would be sent to a yard where they were prepared for resale.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

With Deshler, there are a couple of projects planned for the area of the rail park.  Re-using the bricks would preserve a bit of history.

Used brick are important especially for restoration, repair , and in historic districs.  Often a brick style is no longer baked due to brick refactory out of business.  Also some manufacures may have exhausted one or more sources of clay.  All clay is not the same in color, impurities, chemical composition, ect

Thursday Morning (about 08:30 AM)  was looking out my window, and saw a 'move' ! Looked like 3 GE's in custody of a pair of new Siemens Chargers; headed West.  (Their tops were painted black, wonder if they might be a coupe of the new 4400hp models? )

Sometime after yesterday afternoon train finally left.  Balt.  Thought you might be correct but there is no indicsation that a crane was around to loco 561 to lift it.  As well the train was parked at exactly jusst south of the island circuit of the next crossing where all trains wait for clearance to proceed to CP and gain the main line..  No excuse for leaving the train blocking the next crossing for over 10 days,  Complete brake test would be required anyway.

Finally left sometime after yesterday afternon.  D not think frozen traction motor as no evidence of crane there to replace a motor.  As well train parkked just outside of next crossing's island circuit where all trains wait to ge clearance to proceed to CP and access the Main.  Still no reason for some other train to pull the back of Hertzog train off the blocked siding.

Friday PM...Had a stacker parked out back for some time now...Supposed to get below freezing tonight..Honey-do, Moving plants into the garage, in advance of that.               Kept hearing 'heavy engines' !  Looked up, and saw our resident war bird up , 'Doc" [a B-29].   There is no sound like four of those multiple recip engines climbing...Hard to forget, once you've heard them. Seventy nine degrees here today.  And the last nice day for a while.  At least it was a dry 79.

Hopefully the oncoming band of rain will be past us by the time I go out for the "Pumpkin Walk" with the grandkids tomorrow night. High tomorrow is supposed to be +51F, with below freezing overnight.

Winter makes its way in...

I had a chance to do a "self guided" tour of a B17 some years ago at an open house.  As big as they look in movies, they aren't.  My 6'5" frame had some trouble getting into the nose...

A C5 crewman at the same open house said they'd carried a B17 (sans wings, of course) in their cargo hold...

I'd love an opportunity for a ride, too.

Visited the Combat Air Museum in Topeka several years ago.  Most plane displayed were various fighter aircraft from WW I through some of the early jets.  It is amazing just how small they really are - especially the WW I aircraft.

While I have been to and through Pooler, GA many times I have yet to tour the 8th Air Force Museum there - they do have a B-47 posed alongside I-95.

My daughter's neighborhood tried a new idea this year - a "Pumpkin Walk."  Residents carved pumpkins and put them out for folks walking around the neighborhood to view.  Others had more extensive displays as well.  All in all, it was very nice.  We fell in with some of the daughter's friends, which made the walk that much better.

Daughter lives in a pretty good sized development - we didn't cover the whole thing (the 5.5YO granddaughter wouldn't have handled it well), but there was plenty to see in areas we didn't walk through as well.
