Excellent quote, Bear!

I guess we are just getting old. The world has changed, but has it really?

The answer is to be found in the words of wisdom by an ancient fellow called Socrates.

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”

Words, spoken almost 2,500 years ago!

We are on page 5 and it seems as it I got tops!

I brought some pastry - pick your favorite!!

Happy times!

In reality Steven can pose how he likes, so perhaps I shouldn’t have made the comment even though it was tongue in cheek. But old habits die hard; when standing at ease you didn’t dare put your hands in your pockets, “slovenly laddie, slovenly…”.

Oh dear, I think I might have offended a few peoples' sensitivities with my comment on Steven's relaxed pose. I didn't mean to do that.

If Steven had been standing in place as a member of the wedding party and had posed like that I would be the first person to slap him up the side of his head! However, I suspect that he posed quite properly during the formalities.

I do understand and respect the need for proper behaviour on certain occasions. In fact my son has been complimented regularly for his manners by his peers and their families and Dianne and I will take credit for that.

Good Morning All,

Just a regular to go please Flo. Still thrashing in the shop getting ready for Daytona.

Will stay away from the hands in the pockets thing. Got fired from a job for having my hands that way - waiting for my ride home after I had punched out. And true enough a stint in the military will cure any further tendency.

Cheers, J.R.

Steven,

Sorry to hear about your situation at the club.  That is completely unacceptable (all of the issues) and you did well to walk away, frustrating as it may be.  As far as the photo, I say you look good just the way you are.  Nothing wrong with taking a casual picture with your hands in your pockets like that.

During the formalities my hands were clasped one in the other either in front or behind me.

Thanks for the support on the club situation.

Good morning, everyone.  Coffee, please.  Lots of coffee.

It's the time of year for crazy weather.  This morning the temperature is 13°F.  On Saturday, the forecast is 65°.

It's also a time of year I miss baseball.  Through the season I could always find a game to watch in the evening.  Now I have to find something else to watch.   It's a typical complaint -- we have around 300 cable channels available, and I can't find anything I want to see.

After college, I was single for several years, living alone.  TV became company for me during those years.  If I was home, it was on.  I guess I've never outgrown that.  I have a TV on the wall in my layout room, and if I'm in there, the TV is on.

Hope everyone has a good day.

For me growing up during baseball season it was always SNY with Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling doing the commentary for Mets games, I'll sometimes just have the Mets on in the background while I'm doing something.

I usually don't have time for TV, I have most shows on my phone but I probably spend perhaps 4-5 hours a week actually "watching" TV.

I use my phone a lot but mostly just playing music, other than that.

Steven - I hope you are not offended by all the well-meaning comments on your pose. We are just a bunch of oldtimers having grown up under the rather rigid rule of our parents with a long list of "do´s" and an even longer list of "don´ts". I have vivid memories on how much I hated those reminders, like "sit straight", "walk upright", "don´t hunch your shoulders" and " get your hands out of the pockets". I was shocked when I found myself saying the same things to my son.

I maybe wrong, but, following what you wrote, growing up "back then" was still easier, IMHO. I think there was less harassment like you experience  and a little more respect.

John - I gave up on watching TV nearly 3 years ago. The TV set is still there, but acts as a piece of decoration only. We are not connected to any provider. I don´t miss it at all. Not wasting our time watching the "idiot box" has actually improved the quality of the time Petra and I spend together. And our bank account!

Happy times!

Steven, when I grew up, the only baseball we could get was on the radio.  My brothers ran a wire antenna out our basement window and up into a tree.  We could then get St. Louis Cardinals baseball with Harry Caray.  Holy Cow!

Good morning

NWP-SWP ... You are fundamentally a very good person, and nobody can take that away from you. Walking away from a bad situation is the right thing to do. Don't look back. Forget about those people.

I would suggest working on your own model trains, and telling us about them. I recall you kitbashed a  KCS coal car, and it looked good in the photos you posted of it .  Probably it would be constructive for you to do more projects like that.

I don't care if your hands are in your pockets.  That's what pockets are for. LOL  best wishes to you.

TV became company for me during those years.  If I was home, it was on.  I guess I've never outgrown that.

The wife is like that.  Either a radio, TV or both have to be on in the room she is in.  It drives me nuts.

When she leaves for work, everything gets turned off.  IF feel the need for music, or to have something on, I put on Sirius XM Symphony Hall.

Cold here in SE WI this morning.  The combo of yesterdays all day sleet, snow and some rain all froze over night into frozen mess.

Our maple trees still have leaves, some even green!  What a strange year this has been.

Going to our place in the North Woods on the 14th to close it up for the winter.  We usually have it open well into December.

The good news about all this crazy weather is, I've been running trains, and getting some train related projects going.

OH! and, Trainfest is this Saturday!  My official start back into model railroad season.

Mike.

.

Oh boy. Anyway… back to Georgia where the diner is this month.

.

These pictures are from Forrest Park, Georgia today. The fall colors are on display, but certainly not as majestic as in other parts of the country. However, tjhis is much more vibrant that what we see in Florida where everything just stays green all the time. The old cemetery is in a picturesque setting.

.

.

This is the NORFOLK SOUTHERN line through Forrest Park. I wish I could have seen a train, but they do not run on my schedule.

.

.

The yard throat into the NS yard in Forrest Park. This yard is on a very broad curve and looks like what I want the yard to resemble on my next layout. I did not go beyond the fence to get a better picture. I stay off of the railroad’s property at all times.

Good afternoon from the West Coast on day 14 of sunshine where it is 14c.

Steven, as you go through life you will learn the difference between real friends and all the rest. Early in my adult life, I was surprised by some who I thought were my good friends only to find out otherwise. I have a handful of really good friends and we stand by each other no matter what, a couple of them I have had in my life to cherish for 60 years. Toxic people, I avoid like the plague, negative and racist people will bring your mood down faster than anything, they are not welcome in my life.

Never hesitate for a moment about moving on from any situation and if you are not happy about something fix it, don't dwell on it as that is a waste of time. Poor chronic health issues may be the exception but even then there are ways to be productive.

John, I was poking fun at you about baseball the other day. I just wanted to let you know I played baseball as a kid for a few years and as an adult, I played in a very competitive industrial fastpitch softball league. I love playing baseball, but watching it is not something I enjoy. I also coached a girls fastpitch softball team for a few years as well as boys minor league baseball and then moved on to hockey. There is nothing like seeing a bunch of unruly hooligansLaugh coming together as a team as the season progresses.

I mentioned the wife bought a box of laptop cases, she ended up paying $15.00 for the lot. There were six in the carton and each one also had a laptop cover inside. She picked them up today and this is what she got. Six of these.

As far as dress codes go I have failed on several occasions.Laugh I use to often get called to the high-level meetings when the mucky-mucks were in from Ottawa. The meetings were held in the Federal Government building in downtown Vancouver. I had my own work truck and would just drive that into town wearing my coveralls and parka and would often be a little on the dirty side. One time my truck was in being serviced and I got the call to see if I could get to the meeting on short notice, the only vehicle left was a shunt tractor so I hopped in and when I got to the building realized I could not fit underground so parked on the street in a spot that was reserved for "Government Of Canada vehicles only". Before I could even climb out security was all over me saying I had to move, I showed them the registration that said the vehicle was owned by the Government of Canada and walked in the building.

Now the kicker is, the Federal Minister would often be at these meetings and he was there this day. After the meeting, he asked if I could give him a ride back to the airport as I had done on previous occasions. I said I can, but you might not like what you get to ride in. You will have to sit in the instructors' jump seat, I won't be offended if you want to take a cab. So we make our way down to the street along with the local top brass, you can imagine the look of horror on their faces when I presented the Minister with his chariot. He was a very cool guy and we got along great. Upon seeing his mode of transport he said: "what fun let's go".

This is almost identical to what I drove a Federal Government Minister to the airport in. He had to sit sideways in the fold-down instructors' seat. Like he said though we're saving the taxpayers some money.Laugh

Hands in your pockets when you are giving a speech, being interviewed always looks bad.

we have around 300 cable channels available, and I can't find anything I want to see.

My wife totally agrees!

My cousin records all of the shows she wants to watch so that when she plays them back she can fast forward through all the commercials. Sounds like a smart plan, but I can't convince Dianne to try it. She is electronically challenged to put it politely so she fears having to cope with any new procedures. I'll keep working on her.

I could care less about the commercials because I don't watch TV except for the occasional newscast or food show, and I do that primarily just to spend time with Dianne.

 Evening Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk a Buffalo treat.

Not much to type about which I guess is a good thing.

Windows 10 users Do you have to have a Mircrosoft account to use it? I have been trying to get this refurbished computer running. I have created a password, gave my age (that seemed odd) and used my phone number to get my code. Computer say's I have been sent a code but the phone has never ring's?

Dirk is barking for me to come in, so later.

It's been a long time since I created a Microsoft account.  It may be sending a text message.  It looks like you can establish a new microsoft account with either an email or a phone number.

Windows 10 cracked down a lot on security compared to say windows 7. I believe that having a microsoft account (e.g. outlook account) is now mandatory. However, you can go into settings and change it so that no password is required upon login. Thats what I did, but its your risk...

Not quite sure why you are having so much trouble with your product key. Microsoft DID change to a more secretive digital system, but that means if you got the computer with the Windows 10 OS already installed, the built in product key should have the OS activated already. AFAIK, you cannot find your digital product key without downloading special stuff to dig it up for you.

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

You can also get voice calls for the codes for many things not sure if Microsoft is in on that.

At work were running Windows 7 Professional on all the computers in the branch, so about 9 machines, end of support for 7 is January 14th, 2020, you can continue to use 7 beyond that but it will not be secure and no patches/updates will be issued from then on.

We will be going to 10 sometime in the next two months, ohh joy, I'm not looking forward to training the rest of the front desk staff how to use 10.

Next week I'll be training one of the new girls from kidzone for the front desk, I'll be running basketball practices and games in January and February so I'll need some one to take some of my shifts so I don't end up with "too many hours" (over 29 and metro starts whining) should be easy training her tho, she is abt 20, shes the daughter of the new preacher of my old church and is friends with my friend Sarah so there should be a bit of a rapport there.

Thanks guys for the votes of confidence.

I think some of the people at work may be coming around, at the very least we are on speaking terms.

Still looking for a car, I'm looking at a E46 330ci ZHP, great car and practical, also have been looking at Z3 3.0i Coupes the "clownshoe" fun car but not so practical.

Anyone remember the Cannonball Run movies?

Steven, sorry to hear about how the other members, especially the younger guys, had pushed you out of the train club. I think to often people feel that certain kinds of banter, jokes, ribbing, etc. are not offensive no matter what they say when in reality, it can be. People's feelings are not important so long as the jokes make for a good laugh. Those actions are not funny unless all parties can enjoy it and laugh along with them, and if you're the butt of their jokes, and they're not being considerate of you, you have every right to leave. Such behaviors were one reason I left a job many years ago because the assistant manager, twice my age too, made me the butt of his jokes in front of customers and coworkers. His actions left the place, a retail store, understaffed at Christmas time. One is never to old to learn to be a decent person. Such behaviors are not okay if people are getting hurt over it. Bringing up the concerns to said members is great if people are receptive and concerned enough to change their behaviors. If the result is instead they continue and make fun of you for saying anything, you're even more vindicated for saying "later guys." The YMCA seems like a cool place to work, and in fact, I am going to my local one tomorrow morning before I do homework.

I will join the I can do without TV crowd as well. I like Hulu, Netflix, Youtube, and more for streaming shows at times, but I do not wish to sit and watch anything on regular network TV, or even cable or satellite. I'd like to own a decent sized TV to watch movies, TV show episodes, as I do not like looking at a laptop screen for long periods of time. However, I've done Youtube browsing which feels much like channel surfing hoping something vaguely interesting pops up. I could use the time to read, do homework, or work on trains :) and when I am not tired from a long day of work or school, those are great things to do.

I sat in on two different court room sessions today, a treatment court and certain summary offenses, at the local county court or what's called The Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. I appreciated getting to be there and listen in on the proceedings. I had permission beforehand from the courthouse administrators.

The Y is a great place to work, a lot of drama but it's still a great job.

Their logic was that I'm being defensive because I am gay, which I'm not, if I was gay I'd probably enjoy the jokes better because it would be truth, I'm not some intolerant fool, if you have a good joke, with a decent punchline and it is well executed it is more than acceptable, but when it becomes a constant stream of jokes of the same nature and mostly just the same joke over and over no bueno.

And the funniest thing was right before I just gave up on them I made a joke to one guy in response to his joke about me being gay, I said he's one "mistake" with his girlfriend from having a family to feed so he better get a well paying job after highschool (he isn't the brightest so safe dancing is probably not his first thought) he freaked out and called me a "mistake" my response was that he's just mad because he doesn't have to worry about making a mistake because he isn't dancing. He then blocks me in the group. Maybe he doesn't know how to dance?Laugh

Then everyone piles on me saying I crossed a line, and that my alluding to that was disgusting. Really?

So saying stuff of the same cloth about me is 100% ok but I make one crack back and its "too far"?

Well that's just some people.

Back to chilling to some Red Hearse, half•alive, and Saint Motel.

I'll try again.  The girls were hilarious.  Judy sister came down from Wisconsin.  They all had their duck shirts on.

Marky Mark had his Papa Duck shirt on.

The other sister is Nancy.  Nancy is a union welder that welds ships among other things.  I looked around at my friends there and Nancy could probably kick all our buts.

Nancy is a hardcore girl, I love her.  I know how to do everything in my life today.  I have to admit I don't know how to do what she does.

I love that woman,  she's tougher than nails.

Um ok TF, your post had a faint inkling of coherent thought but for the most part was kinda just puzzle pieces that don't fit together.

But I'll try to make the puzzle go together.

"The girls" I presume is Judy and her sister(s)? One being named Nancy and they are from Wisconsin.

They are hilarious, guessing that has something to do with the "duck shirts".

Who the hell is marky mark? How does he fit into this? Is he one of the family patriarchs?

Nancy is a welder, cool job, pays good for sure.

Aforementioned Nancy can kick you and your buddies patards.

You know how do do things and she can do them differently/better?

I started out pretty sure what you meant now I'm not so sure.

Gotta love your posts when slightly (possibly) inebriated.LaughBeerDrinks
