In another forum I visit they were talking about leopards and I showed them the kind of leopards we have, seen in their natural habitat.

I am not aware of lions, but at one time we had tigers!

None of them survived, only a few have been stuffed and are on display in museums.

Happy times!

Ulrich, I know you have family in Germany, so I probably already know the answer to this.

If things don't work out in Denmark, is there a possibility you would consider the U.S. or Canada?

To get on the interstate, I look to my left to see the traffic. From there I will know which cars will pss before me, and which ones will be behind me when I get down to the bottom of the rqmp.

As soon as I am on the ramp I bring my speed smoothly up tp 75 mph, and my chosen hole should be there waiting for me.

Bring it up to 80 mph and merge left.

Well usually there is no traffic to merge with, but sometimes there is.

ROARING

In Atlanta the interstates have 7 or 8 lanes in each direction. When merging from the on-ramp (or when simply changing lanes), you can't just look at the immediate adjacent lane. You have to look two or three lanes over. If there is a gap of one car length in your intended lane, you can bet at least two other cars are already trying to jump into it.

Happy motoring.

Robert

John, we had been mulling over a move to either the US or Canada for quite some time, but had to discard the idea. Canada requires either a lot of cash (which we don´t have) or a profession which is sought after, but only if you are young enough. We are too old and too poor.

Moving to the US requires also more funds and income that we don´t have. The move to Denmark is only possible if our friend buys the house and lets us use a part of it for a nominal rent. My not so low medical bills will still be covered by my insurance, which does not honor any medical expenses outside of the EU.

We should have moved to the US many. many years ago, when we were still able to build up a new life. But I am afraid that´s too late now.

In Ontario we have on ramps that are long enough to comfortably get up to speed, and just about everyone will allow you into the right lane either by slowing down or moving over if possible. Even in heavy traffic merging is still reasonably civilized.

What I hate are those people who try to merge at well below the speed of traffic. I don't understand their thought processes. Why do something that puts your life and the lives of others at risk?!? There certainly isn't a lack of horsepower even in the micro cars (except maybe the original Smart for Two which is no longer sold here).

Where we do have a problem is with tailgaters. It is not uncommon for drivers to be less than two car lengths off my back bumper when I am already at 125-130 kms/hr (which is 25-30 kms over the speed limit). If there is nobody immediately in front of me then I will always move over well before the faster cars get up to me, but when the traffic is solid it makes no sense to try to move over just so speedy pants can get one car ahead. I expect the problem goes well beyond Ontario.

Afternoon Diners. Time change sucks rail spikes!

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk his Buffalo treat.

Got the front yard cut in Mulching Mode to get rid of some of the leaves. To bad that 75% of the leaves are still on the trees. Finally got all the gas ran out of the mower so it is done this year.

Mainly a Dirk Pip day. Dirk, Sue and I went to Lowes to return the Ventless wall heater I now don't need. Short visit to the park then too the market for some BBQ food and stuff.

While in Lowes my wife came to me with a Rub called Booty? Why in the world she thought I should buy that is beyond me? Bottle said it has a Nashville Taste. To make her happy I bought it, but acouse she did not want any on Her Rib's? I am all so trying Stubbes Spicy BBQ Sauce. BBQ is done in 4 minutes! Dinner

Stubbs Spicy should be labeled Stubbs HOT! It was way too hot for my old taste buds, anyway. Maybe you like things hotter than I do? I used to like the heat but lately I've tamed things down to medium or even mild. I can always add heat (Frank's Red Hot, Red Devil, Tapatio, Crystal or Cholula are some of my faves) but can't take it away.

Still like Szechuan or Hunan Chinese and hot mustard (not the packet stuff) for my egg roll, though. Dinner

Hope you like your BBQ, Ken Big Smile

Dianne and I are headed in the opposite direction. We rarely ever used hot sauce. Maybe a couple of drops of Tabasco in a large pot of spagetti sauce, but that was about it. A small bottle of Tabasco would last us for years.

Now we have three or four different varieties of hot sauce right beside the stove. We buy the big bottles of Frank's and they last about two months. When I make a Caesar I put 32 shots of Frank's Hot Sauce in mine and 24 in Dianne's, plus eight shots of Worsestershire in each (16 oz. glasses). We make them with gin by the way and they are very tasty!

I know that Frank's barely qualifies as a hot sauce but we like it. We don't go nuts on the heat in case you were wondering, but hot sauce has definitely added enormously to our cooking repertoire.

Good morning.  I love the time change.  There was enough light this morning for me to walk the trail instead of inside the field house.  It won't be too long before it gets too dark again early in the morning.

Not much going on today.  I'm going to work on my least favorite thing of the layout -- putting ballast on another section.

I have been working on the layout for about 1½ years.  When I started, I thought I would like certain things, like laying track, wiring, and landscaping.  Now that I have worked on this, those are actually things I don't enjoy doing.  I have grown to love scratch building structures -- something I didn't want to do when I started.

I think out of everything, laying ballast and getting it to look right is my least favorite.

I can see the advantage of belonging to a club and having different jobs divided up for people who like doing different things.  Although I like living in a rural area, one disadvantage is there are no railroad clubs anywhere near.  I'd like to be in a club where I could build structures and have someone else do the other things.

Have a good day, everyone.

Good Afternoon!

Still feeling terrible - no wonder after a nearly sleepless night! As one famous German poet (Heinrich Heine) once wrote "when I think of my country by night, I wake up in terror and fright" (slightly adapted, from his novel "Germany, a winter journey").

I just hope we manage to get out of here in time!

Over the weekend we had a SW Gale, winds over 76 MPH., after filling the generator every 8 hours for two days, the loss of an hour really isn't important. !!

Good afternoon ....

We retruned from our trip to Arizona. Our daughter and her husband are doing very well. They are in Casa Grande which has ample opportunities for train watching. It is on the Union Pacific's former SP Sunset route. It is a double track main line with trains running continuously .

I see we moved to Georgia while I was away. It is a great location for train watching.

Cheers.

Since we are in Georgia, I decided to take some pictures of some local sights and share them in the diner.

.

We are starting with a trip up Interstate 75 just before exit number 39 approaching Adel. There is this massive industrial installation on the West side of the Interstate that looks like an amazing thing to compress and model.

.

This plant was originally built in the mid 1990s by a German company trying to introduce aerated cement panels to the United States as a building material. It was abandon several years ago, but there were plans to reopen the plant about five years ago using funds from another German investment company. That never happened.

.

The site was a pallet recycling location, but I believe that enterprise has also shut down, and now the facility is falling into disrepair. I love all the visible equipment outside the structure. It has so much more character than some industrial buildings where everything is hidden behind massive monolithic walls made of corrugated steel siding.

.

There was at one time a railroad spur that entered across cook street and branched into at least three stubs inside the gate. These rails have been removed, but it is still possible to see where they were positioned.

.

This would be an industry that is not normally represented on Model Railroads.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Sorry for the poor pictures, but the neat stuff is only visible from the Insterstate view as you drive by. My wife shot the pictures while I went by.

I saw a poll that claimed 70% of Americans don't want to change time. 40% want standard time and 30% want daylight savings time.  I'd vote for standard.

I've only been in Georgia once, for a convention.  However this thread reminded me of one of my co-residents, who I stayed with then.  His wife was one of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

Last I talked to him he was out of work, having had a bilateral knee arthroscopy with unsterile instruments and getting a life threatening infection.  Someone told that wasn't true and he was a narcotics addict.  It happens to anesthesiologists.

I looked him up on the Internet and he is still practicing in a pain clinic and has no medical board actions against him.  I have to give him a call.

I operate on my own internal clock, so neither standard nor savings does much for me. Both are pretty much a nuissance.

My complaint regards the mathematics. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but there are about 240 days of daylight savings time and about 125 days of standard time. If they're gonna keep the current scheme, they should at least switch the names vice versa the other way around. Or maybe begin calling the schemes something like Standard Time and Daylight Wasting Time. After all, there's a lot of daylight in the summer, you don't really need to save any; winter's when some saving would help.

Good evening all.

Zoe - A nice large Mexican Hot Cocoa please. Thanks.

Ed - Your Pittsburgh experience reminds me of one I had in Erie. It was a snowy day last winter and I was entering onto I-90. There was a car quite a ways ahead of me on the on ramp, and slight traffic on the interstate. As I got to the middle of the on ramp, the vehicle in front of me was approaching the end of it. I began looking to my left checking interstate traffic, and looking for a spot to merge into, while accelerating to the interstate speed (that segment) of 55MPH.

I looked back in front of me to find the car I was following at a distance completely stopped! (No reason for this, as there was lots of places to merge into as traffic was light.) Now, it is snowy, and I am now at the correct 55MPH speed. I hit my brakes and quickly cut right. (Another 4-5 seconds later and I would have slammed into her no matter what I did.) I passed by her still stopped car using the right shoulder, then cut back into the merge lane and easily merged as there was plenty of room.

The issue is, with the snow, there was zero chance she would be anywhere close too interstate highway speed before running out of on ramp merger lane. My evasive action had me below highway speed as it was, so she had zero chance of being even remotely close.

Some people should simply not drive on interstates. (Or at all, but that’s another story.)

Ulrich - Sorry that you are having so many issues with the needed move. I really hope it can be made as a viable option still.

Jimmy - Yep, it got pretty windy in many places in Westrn PA! Lost power for a time in my area from that storm system as well.

Ken - The Windows 10 code should be included on a sticker on the computer, and I do recommend a magnifying glass or magnification reading glasses, as it is very small print and it needs to be entered exactly correct.

I also recommend, if you are speaking on the phone with them, getting a Microsoft agent on the phone who has English as their first language, as that does help a lot.

I have gone a few rounds with them folks myself, so I know where you are coming from on that front!

Weather - Had a shot of snow, but very little. Have had more than our fair share of wind though. Not really liking all the weather fronts though, as that is affecting the asthma.

W*^k - Almost got hit, twice, by two different inattentive drivers in the same intrsection in the span of 10 minutes today. The first one the pickup behind me was hoping I would roll the stop sign. I didn’t. He spiked his brakes and somehow, squealing tires and all, missed the back of the delivery car by only a couple of inches. (I was actually waiting for the bump of the impact, but it never came.)

The second time, there was a car properly stopped at that same stop sign, waiting to turn left, and as I was turning left back onto that road (T-style intersection where the bottom of the T is the only road that has a stop sign), she began rolling out into the middle of the intersection. She was looking down at her phone and had let off on her brakes just as I got there. My hitting the horn scared her silly, as she stomped on her brakes, jumped quite a bit, and said phone went flying into the air inside her car. (Had I not hit the horn, she would have hit the drivers side rear door on the delivery car.)

I began laughing at that reaction, as it serves her right to be startled that much when texting while driving and almost hitting someone because of that.

Of course, both of these two idiots glared at me and signaled that I was number one. But, I had done nothing incorrect both times, and had actually been the one obeying the traffic laws in both instances.

Trains - Curious, what does everyone use to strip paint off of a decorated model? I have a couple of cars I am going to re-letter/re-number, (but not fully repaint if I can avoid it.) and a locomotive that will be turning into a different road name and paint scheme. (It needs a full repaint.)

I have heard of using 91% or higher rubbing alcohol, along with a toothbrush to strip paint, and using decal solvent and a pencil eraser to remove lettering only, but am wondering what some of the more experienced ones would do for these.

(If it helps, the cars are older Roundhouse Hoppers, and the locomotive is a BLI diesel.) The cars I am changing to a newer herald and a unique number for each, but the locomotive will be completely different when finished. I’m therefore hopeful that the cars I can simply remove the lettering and heralds only, but they could be fully repainted if need be.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!

Jalapenos Peppers is about the hottes I can take. I liked the rib's I had.

Jan Good to see you again!

Rick You are right about the small letters! This is a refurbished computer and I don't think it want the Key Code. I looked at the invoices and I think the code it wants is R2 Ready for Resale? Just to tired to try again to night.

Ulrich I might be wrong but I am 85% sure one Tiger has been restored.

Looks like Newegg is going to give me a refund on 2 of the computers! Funny thing I wonder if there is some way they could be useful? For $127.49 each they are pretty cheap?

Good Evening,

A Happy Birthday to Johnboy!! I know it was yesterday but I was away and so missed the official day.  Hope you had a good day.

Well I finally got the decoder in the C Liner and it is running great. It is really heavy and  I expect it can pull a lot, not that I have many cars to pull. Anyway it is a passenger loco so that does limit the length of train. It will have to make do with 5 heavyweights as that is all I have.

We were visiting our friends near Thief River Falls over the weekend and had a really nice visit. Both are having some health issues which is a concern. They only have one westie now and he is getting on. Very quiet in the house considering they once had 7 and were active in both showing and breeding westies.

Well it is nearly tomorrow so I better hit the hay.

Good Morning!

I am starting to feel slightly better. I caught a little more sleep than in the previou nights, so that might have helped.

I am really worried about Johnboy! He hasn´t posted for quite some time. Wherever you are, Johnboy, Happy B-Day and please let us know you are doing OK.

I am not much of a "tank fan". I find tanks fascinating pieces of machinery on one hand, but fearsome and frightful on the other hand. In my teenage days, we lived about 10 miles away from a "military playground" for tanks and you could hear the rumble of those tanks up at our place. When they started shooting, my mom was always terrified, as she recalled memories of the Red Army coming close. For a teenage girl an experience she should have done without - like all others of that generation in Europe and Asia.

Ken, yes, there are a few tigers tucked away in some museums. They are just liked stuffed animals of an extinct species. None of them would have survived an encounter with, say, a Leopard II.

Guess how much distance a tank requires to come to a complete halt from traveling 50mph?

Happy times!

Hi Bear,

Thanks for the video of the Tiger tank. If I had deep pockets I would gladly contribute to the preservation of the Tiger despite its origins as a tool of the Nazi regime. We have to preserve these artifacts if only to remind us of the atrocities that were committed during WWII.

I hope I haven't offended the moderators with my comments. We are walking a fine line here.

There are people who collect tanks and other military vehicles.  Tom Clancey had a Sherman tank.  There are youtube videos of various tank restorations.

Fort Meade, near me, used to have one of those tanks from WW1 that looked like the one in the Indiana Jones movie.  I would not want to have been a tanker.

Aberdeen Proving Grounds, which is near Sheldon's (Atlantic Central) home used to house the Army's collection of tanks.  They all sat outside, slowly rusting away.  Some were quite small.  They moved them to Ft Lee in Virginia along with Anzio Annie

Good Morning All,

A regular and an English muffin please Zoe. Got back to the layout last night before the Giants game - should have just kept going, eck.

The big bridge has some 140 holes in the deck for the railings and most were not anything more than slight divots in the edge. Couldn't use an electric drill because the back wall is too close on the far side so I hand drilled all 72 holes on that side with a bit in a pin vise. Not too bad. Checked all the walkways beneath the deck and refastened two of the railings there as well as one walkway. Drilled all the rest of the holes on the deck out and got the far side railings in. I now need to make and attach the guard rails for the deck (code 70 for those) which is always a fiddle. They are 40" long each so I will solder two lengths of rail together and then form the angle for the ends. Probably need to make a fixture to hold everything straight and square as well.

I like tanks probably for the same reason I like trains. Big improbable mechanical things fascinate me. I had one customer who needing work after WWII bought a surplus (deweaponed) army tank to use for demolition work. He had wanted a bulldozer like he had used in the SeaBees but they were too expensive so he settled for the tank. He would drive it straight into the building they were taking down and if he ended up in the basement - no problem - he could just drive back out.

My cousin was in armoured in the Army (three tours in Nam - two as an advisor) and ended up teaching new recruits at Fort Knox. I was busy riding big gray boats at the time but he hosted my brothers on the training grounds there and they got to ride around in the tanks used for practice (pretty sure it was before the M-1 Abrams).

All for now, we are still thrashing to finish up for Daytona with the trucks leaving Sunday (work expands to fill the time available).  Ciao, J.R.

Good Afternoon,

Another cold day here. It is only -6C now which is below normal for us and is supposed to stay that way for the next week.

If anyone knows Johnboy's name, send me a PM and I will see if I can find out if he is ok. He lives about a 6 hour drive straight west from me. I don't plan on driving to Regina but I can certainly phone.

I sure do like 5 axle C Liners. I wish mine had sound but I can't find a sound decoder with the correct sound file. Perhaps I'll find another with sound as they did come with a QSI sound decoder option. I guess I'll just use the under table sound decoder. I have no idea what a FM engine sounded like so I'll fool myself with some other option.

Time to head out and do some errands. We are out of dog food and bird food.

Johnboy´s last post was on Sept. 15th this year. I hope he is OK!

Heading for the hay - CU tomorrow!

Happy times!
