Dianne and I just had a great weekend with some long time friends! We went to London, Ontario on Friday to see one of Dianne's high school buddies (Brenda) present her first solo CD. We were at the London Music Club which is a very intimate and very friendly venue. There were three sets of musicians plus Brenda with her band called the Back Seat Girls, all very entertaining.

Eight of us stayed at Brenda's that night and drank more wine than we should have! The next night we went to Aylmer, Ontario to see a band called 'Lion, Bear, Fox'. They are three guys who have both powerful and poignant music. No covers, all original. They have all given up regular jobs to follow their hearts as musicians. They were tremendous!

While we were enjoying a wonderful salmon dinner on Saturday at Brenda's, I made a casual comment about the fact that, between the eight of us, there was almost 500 years of experience around the table. I had no clue what I had started! Within a few minutes a couple of the girls were calculating exactly when the '500th' shared birthday would take place. That proved to not be quite so simple a task. In fact, I think we probably could have used an actuary to help us out with the various factors like leap years added into the equation. That lead to the question of how and where we would celebrate said event. The outcome for now is that we agreed to arrange a party this fall to plan THE party which will happen sometime in 2020, probably in some exotic location. You have to be some serious partiers if you need to have a party to plan a party!Smile, Wink & GrinYesBeerHappy B-DayDrinksThumbs UpYeahWowDinner. We have a great group of friends!!!

Oh, I only mentioned model trains once during the weekend. My bad!Smile, Wink & Grin

P.S. galaxy: I do understand your point of view in that Steven has been posting a lot and that some of his posts could be a bit tedious, especially initially. However, any young kid who knows something about Jim Clark and Lotus racing cars can't be all bad. Please give him a break. I think he is learning how to fit in.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

I thought I heard somewhere that Jackie Stewart once broke down on the final lap of the Indianapolis 500 he got out of the car and started pushing! Something about racers honor and having to finish the race.

Another story I've heard is when Parnelli Jones was practicing with the STP-Paxton Turbocar (Andy Granatelli's brainchild) A.J. Foyt said "That's no racing car, that's a          aeroplane!" Laugh

'Mornin Folks —

Monday already?

BATMAN
Ed, What year was that photo taken? They are very cool.

Thank you, Brent. Those two photos were taken 31 May, 1975. A few weeks later we were making regular runs between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio, on the B&O's branch line.

Here's a shot from the following year:

Oh, those were some fun times, alright!

Glad to hear you had such a great time, Dave. Never too old to party! Cool

The C - O - L - D weather is still hanging around the Great Lakes area. Lows in the twenties(F)! Maybe things will warm up a bit this week?

Cheers, Everyone! Thoughts and Prayers, too.

Good morning everyone...

What Zoe?  Ah, no, can't even have a cup of coffee this morning....  Yep. will be heading over to the Outpatient Surgery Center in about 45 minutes.  keep the coffee hot and order another half dozen dougnuts for my son and I for when I arrive back home.

My eyelid surgery is this morning and I guess I am about a s reday as I can be for it.  Weigthed myself this morning and the scale said 228lbs.  Getting there, slow and steady.  31 years ago when my wife died I weighed 235 and after that time I got up to 320lbs. so I do feel better physically and mentally as well.  I want to get down under 210.

I was working the NMRA Table at the Batavia train show yesterday.  I unloaded the VOLT at the door they specified, took the stuff over to the tables they gave us, then had to go park the car in the main parking lot.  I came back in through the entrance that was where visitors would go through to pay.  Just getting ready at a table their was a lady who alnog with her husband are NMRA memebers and also officers of the Club putting on the show.  I walked right by toward the main doors and got yelled at by her that I had to pay and they weren't open yet.  So I mosseyed over to the table and said, "Don't even recognize me do you?"  She stopped, looked at me again, and then from my voice figured it out.  She went nuts!  She hasn't seen me since the beard went bye, bye....

Had a good day at the show and handed out a lot of NMRA and Division materials.  We are getting into transition mode as I am definately stepping down as Superintendent in the Fall.  Have a good idea who will take my place.  We also will most likely need  a new Asst. Super as the guy who now holds the job is the one I mention some time back who had a very bad stroke.  I will likely stay on the board and will be "communications officer (whic I do at this point anyway).

No music here this morning???  Oh, Jukebox got smashed by an unhappy guy who drank too much coffee....  Hey, you can't please everybody.  When I get home from the surgery, I guess I'll turn on the system, put on some Mannhiem Steamroller and crank my Alesis Nearfield Monitors hear in the dinning room....

Have a great day out there.  Sun is shining hear in the Finger lakes region of New York State!

Afternoon folks!

Well I have survived!  Both the Doctor and the Anathesiologist said everything went well, and don't think I should have any problems.  I already have some swelling as expected.  My vision is much better though.  Periferal vision is greatly improved imediately!  Main thing now is for me not to mess anything up.  Soreness is setting in.  My son is out to get me some Tylenol for it.  Can't have aspirine for another week....

Thanks for the good wishes!

I have to ice my eyes again.  Catch you later...

I don't know if I'm thankful or not. I didn't have to go out to the ranch this morning as it was too muddy for Mom to even get out of the driveway. Most likely it just means that I will have to do it tomorrow. However...

Hobby Front: Got two things done and one thing further along. The GN hopper reletter is done. Put yet another coat of Micro Sol on it to make sure that the lettering was down. I then put a light coating of Humbrol Rust to weather the car a bit to show its age.

The BN SD40-2 is also ready to go home. I finally got the handrails attached last night. (One of my micro drill bits helped with that to make the holes just a hair bigger.) I thouched up some of the paint that needed it. I ended up replacing two complete nose stripes and part of a third as the old stripes didn't stick down to the nose very well. (The stripes weren't very good off the old sheet I had in the first place. I cut some replacements from the new sheet that I got last week.)

I also got the last boxcar painted. (The second coat is drying as I type this. The paint was one of the items that my friend picked up for me in Billings.) We shall see if I will need to put another coat on the sides. (Yellow at times doesn't cover railroad cars well. However, it does seem to cover fingers well.) It won't be today however. I'm out of paint thinner. (Will need to get more from the layout. Too smelly to keep in town.) I will also need to finish painting the doors black.

I will also be getting another new boxcar probably tomorrow. (Not that I really need more freight cars but I couldn't resist.) I deccided to get one of Accurail's new NP combo cars. This one will be used for grain loading as they were still used for that purpose to the early 80's. Will need to do some weathering and maybe a little bit of decal work and that car can go home.

Afternoon/Evening folks, I just finished trying to pressure wash at hotel B spent an hour trying to get enough pressure but got no more pressure than a supersoaker! Sigh

The jukebox may return if Mr. Otte says its ok but until he stops in the diner the jury is still out. In the event that it does return I'm not going to be using it for a while being that I was the main "offender"!Laugh

Here's a copy of the MR forum rules, just so we're all clear with each other.

This is the distilled version.

Here's a quick and easy, distilled version of the most important Forum policies. Scroll down for the more detailed version below.

Off Topic Stay on topic -- model train talk only, please (though civil off-topic discussion is tolerated in the Diner thread).

Angry Stay away from divisive topics, like graffiti, hoboes, train-hopping, and what makes a "real model railroader."

SoapBox Avoid controversial off-topic subjects like race, religion, ethnicity, sex, violence, guns, abortion, politics, unions, and immigration, even in signatures. This extends to images, as well.

Bang Head Be civil. No name-calling, insults, or put-downs (including accusing others of "trolling").

Devil Keep it clean. No "bad words," even if you replace them with $¥MßØ1$. And no racy pictures or discussion of adult topics.

My 2 CentsThumbs Down No selling or advertising. That means no links or references of any kind to items or services for sale or auction. No promoting events, fund-raisers, contests, websites, Facebook groups, or other Forums, either.

If you spot a violation of these policies, have a problem with another Forum user, or want to contact the site moderators for any other reason, use the "Report Abuse" icon at the lower-left of every post.

See? That didn't take too long! Big Smile

Now for the detailed one.

If you are new to our forums, welcome! Below is an outline of our general forum rules.

If you ever see any of these being violated, please use the “Report Abuse” link that’s found in the lower left of every single post in our forum. (It looks like a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point.) An automated message will be sent to our moderators and the infraction will be dealt with.

Thanks for participating in our forums. Your contributions make our forum a great resource for train enthusiasts from around the world. Your assistance policing our forums helps keep the environment positive and enjoyable for people of all ages.

Now, to the rules:

Please keep discussions on topic (that is, railroad-related).

Your forum signature should not be used as a place to express your personal beliefs (religion, politics, marital status, sexual preference, etc.). Remember, this is a forum tied to our common bond of railroading; don’t let your personal viewpoints on unrelated topics interfere with the common reason we’re all here.

No buying and selling via the Forums. Our forums should not be used as an advertising medium for companies who want to promote their business or products, or by individuals who want to promote their items for sale or their eBay auctions. Our users are the drivers behind this policy. They don’t want the useful information in our forums watered down with advertisements or solicitations to buy something. If you’d like to advertise on our site, scroll to the bottom of this page and click the “Advertise” link. Show promoters, check out our Coming Eventssection. You can post your events free; click “Add My Event” in the left column.

No swearing or foul language. And we don’t care if you use symbols to mask the words. The meaning is still conveyed and we don’t want it in our forum. Please keep in mind that we have readers of all ages. This isn’t a tavern.

No personal attacks or name-calling.Please keep conversations cordial. We understand that there will be differences of opinion. Please don’t let those differences turn ugly. Accept that others might not have your same point of view, don’t sink to personal attacks. Nothing is gained by doing so.

No political discussions or signature messages. We know, railroads are sometimes affected by politics. However, we’ve found that political discussions almost always turn into arguments. We have a common thread of being interested in railroads. Don’t let that common bond be destroyed by political differences.

No inherently divisive discussions or signature messages. Hot-button topics like guns, abortion, religion, immigration, and crime aren't welcome, for the same reasons as political discussions and signatures. We all have our own views, and this isn’t the place to share them. Remember, this is a railroading forum.

No inappropriate images or videos. If you choose to post photos or links to videos, please keep them railroad-related and use your best judgment. Someone getting hit by a train or using poor judgment around a train (e.g. playing “chicken” with a train) isn’t welcome.

Don’t use our forum as a means of promoting another forum (or discussion group, Facebook page, online magazine, contest, fund-raiser, etc.). Within your forum profile, you’re allowed to share your own Web site and blog URL. Leave it at that. (To update your forum profile, log into the forums, then click your username where it says “Welcome back so-and-so” near the top of the forum.)

Don't post event announcements here.We have a page on our website for Coming Events. Please post your events there, not on the Forum. Here, it counts as advertising.

Please respect copyright material. If you want to share copyright material with our users, please link to it. Don’t take a story from another Web site and post it in our forum. Don’t take a photo that you don’t own the rights to and use it in our forum.

No discussions about graffiti. We understand that it’s a part of modern railroading and in turn something that the modelers on this forum may want to replicate. However, we’ve found that every time the topic comes up, an argument ensues because of the strong viewpoints against it. Plus, it’s vandalism and not something we want to glorify.

No discussions about train-hopping, hobos, or the hobo lifestyle. It’s dangerous, illegal, and sets a poor example for the youth that visit this forum. Plus, like graffiti discussions, it usually leads to arguments.

Thanks again for joining and participating in our railroading and model train reader forum. Have fun!

And here's the rules of the Diner as they appear on the opening post.

Welcome to Jeffrey's Trackside Diner.  It's a place where you can come in, relax and talk about most anything except religion, politics, immigration, or any other hot button topic that may ruffle feathers or is deemed inappropriate for a family-oriented hobby.  Please see forum rules if you have any questions.

Just in case anyone needs a refresher.

Young Steven,

I don't believe any of us need a "refresher", I suggest you acquire some manners, and pay attention to the suggestions you have been given. A opening format for the Diner has been developed over a period of time, which you seem bent on ignoring. It is not your place to make any arbitrary decisions. This is what has precipated the angst.

thought I'd stop in anyway.

Mainly for an update for RAY. Glad to hear the surgery went well, I see the orthopedic Surgeon tomorrow, may be facing r knee surgery, need TWO canes now to get around, to keep pressure off the knee. Us old timers and surgeies, aches adn pains and ailments....lololololol.

YOung Steven NWPSWP, agian, gently reminding you:

AS Jan White so eloquently put it: we don't need a "refresher" on forum rules, I, myself, have been here 12 years, you were just starting Kindergarten when I started on here, you were barely able to read, and probably not even able to wright {I think that comes in 1st or 2nd grade}

YOur very answer, and perhaps MR. Ottes, too, IS CLEAR AS DAY IN YOUR infinite wisdom of posting your "refresher", which ALL of us here as "old timers" know very well, TO WIT:

"No Innappropriate images or VIDEOs: If you choose to post photos or links to videos,PLEASE KEEP THEM RAILROAD-RELATED, and use your best judgement. Somone getting hit by a train....{etc}"...

Also, although Youtube is public, THERE MAY be copywrited material somone has posted that you inadvertantly post here....SO, ALSO TO WIT:

"Please respect copyright material...." it DOES say "Please link to it".....but I have saved YOUTUBE videos on my Youtube account, that were later removed for copyright VIOLATION. SO, ONE does NEED to be very careful in that department. Most of us old timers are very aware of copyrights, and YOU are just "LEARNING"...so heed this advice....

Thre is ONE section, I COULD be accused of: "No personal attacks or name calling...".. I am IN NO WAY "attacking you".....just trying to provide you some gentle guidance.

YOu have YET to learn the ways of the workld yet, my young friend, as WE ALL did when WE were 17..in 1920-,30-,40-50-or in y case very early 60-something.......you were born THIS century, we were all born LAST century. In fact many of us or at least some of our our counterparts, thought the WORLD would end in the year 2000!!! There was a mass panic amongst some! ALL computers would CRASH {they were only originally programmed to 19-- {something} {meaning up to 1999 ONLY, not allowing for "2---"}}. By the way, personal type computers weren't even out when I graduated High School...hows that for you? ANd phones WEREN't push button, but rotary dial {look it up, you had to spin a circular dial to dial a number, SOme on here remember when TV came out {Heck, I was 13 before we had a COLOR TV}! lol I could go on and on...but you get the picture......that's not to say we haven't addapted to modern tech, or we wouldn't be chatting with you on a personal computer, tablet or smart phone.

I am Not "resentful", but I do perhaps detest that you ahve tried to take this well and long used forum, which IS carved in stone how it has and is operating, and making it YOUR OWN PLATFORM to CHANGE, ALTER, DISTORT into your own tangled web... I DO understand asbergers have difficulties communicating, but there are plenty of other forums, OR you could start your own, or a BLOG or VLOG of your own. MY OH {short for "other half"...if you don't get that, menaing my spouse} WORKS with "special needs" individuals with asbergers, autism, Downs syndrom, etc..well lets say those with "different abilities" as I hate the term "special needs" as much as I HATE being called "disabled" because I have gotten around with a cane for 10 years, and have "Handicapped" license plates. I guess I usually say I have "limited abilities"....

so read, digest, LURK here for a while, but DON'T try to change a format that has worked WELL for YEARS before you came along.

AGAIN NOT AN ATTACK but a gentle reminder...and GUIDANCE.

First, grow up a little, learn to TAKE guidance from your ELDERS or SUPERIORS OR you will be clenaing pools for the rest of the your life instead of being a police officer or crime scene investigator,as your SUPERIORs, will wnat you to FOLLOW PROTOCOL, or risk insubordination.

I'M ONLY ASKING YOU TO FOLLOW protocol HERE.

{and NO i didnt get up on the wrong side of the bed, I got up on hte right side, as thats where i sleep, adn YES I had my coffee.....}

Now for a cup of camomile tea before bed....or is it "sleepy time" i need?

Until the matters are resolved, I shall probably be scarce here.

thoughts prayers for those in need.....

Hi Steven! One of the important "Social Graces" to learn in life (took me years to get it right) is to know when to just ignore others when they are rude to you.  Of course for me it took many years of teaching Middle Schoolers to even start to get it down pat! LOL  Sometimes the best response is no response.  I tend to use that often at any forum I am at.

You are still young and a bit "wet behind the ears"  (I was much worse at your age), so my advise is to just pass by the remarks without comment, but do use it to learn from.

(Aside) When I got the call from the Surgery Center pre-surgery, one question they asked me was, "Have you ever felt or considered harming yourself or someone else?"  I thought for a second and replied, "Not since I retired from teaching Middle School Music!"

"I did go to school - my kind of school. When I was a kid I went out ... and you meet people. You talk to them. Anybody says something that makes sense, it stays with you, rubs off on you. That kind of school." - George Burns

Happy Sunday to everyone.

.

I hope my kitchen remodel updates are not too far off topic for everyone. It is model railroading related because the end phase of the house remodel is that I will get a layout room. This is the first step.

.

We are trying to decide on a backsplash tile now. We narrowed it down to these six choices, but when I tested them on the wall, and we don't think any of them is perfect. I guess we are going shopping again.

I think SOME variance is needed instead of all hospital white.....

Not to leave you out, JOHNBOY....

I'm surprised you remembeer my garden room....but its less than 12' square {don't now abotu meters} meaing its 11'3" one side x 11'9" the other.

It really has no room for a layout, the two doors are in opposite corners.

It also serves as our dining room, wiht drop leaf toable and chairs in it.

Ive thought about it, it IS heated and A/c'd, but its more "upstairs space we'd lose.

dont know.

I DO like some roundy rounders, I cna watch that for a good hour. I can;t really use my little 3.5'x5.6" layout as the curves are tight. iwant to broaden the curves so I can run my bigger locos....

Ill think on it....

thanks anyway...

Good evening from the soggy Eastern edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Have had a busy day today juggling many different goings on. Trying to simplify my investments by closing out a couple of trading companies I have dealt with for forty years. I use seven different ones as one should not keep all his eggs in one basket. I also use four different banks and that is proving to be a pain as money goes in and out of all of them for different things. I have really lost interest in stock trading in the past year or two. I started as a way to supplement my income as I had decided to stay on the blue collar side of the career world and high school was it for me. I self-educated myself as I went along and it ended up really boosting my standard of living.

We are starting to get pestered by developers making early offers for the joint. All were too low to be taken seriously. The condo crusade is 2 KM down the road so I guess we are now in their sights.

Jan, my wife's dogs seem to be pretty popular with the local hunters looking for good gundogs. One of them sent this to her this morning. She also sells a lot of dogs to field trial people, now that is a past time I don't get. Hunting, sure. Killing hundreds of beautiful ducks just to have a competition to see if your dog can retrieve just rubs me the wrong way. To each there own I guess.

The kid has landed a movie that starts three days before school ends. They are flying him home for a day of costume fittings just before his exams start. The kid says the airplane is the best place to get work done for school as nobody bothers him like they do in residence, so he is fine with the ten hours of having his butt in a seat on a plane. Frequently he gets the whole row of seats to himself so he can spread out. He is trying to get his last two exams moved up. The University is pretty accommodating about that stuff. He is guaranteed a minimum $5000.00 a week and his part of the shoot is slated for two to three weeks. A good start to student Summer employment. The kid was super busy today with a long police interview on campus over an incident he may have witnessed. So along with classes, he had me working out the logistics with the movie studio today. I'll give all the support the kid needs when is working his butt off like he does.

The wife is picking up Chinese on the way home from the riding lesson tonight as we are all bagged.

I am the executor of an old friend of my mothers that asked me forty years ago if I would be. She is closing in a 100 this year and the charity she left her money to is no longer around. She is an American and has informed us we are now one of three beneficiaries in her new will. I am and have been the executor of quite a few people, however, with her being an American there will be new ropes to learn. I have found a good Law firm that does U.S. estate work. Busy, busy.

Time for a glass of wine, I think. What happened to the music in this joint? Trains and music are my passion equally. I kinda liked hearing what other people were listening to. I didn't have to click on it if I didn't want to.

All the best to all.

PS: Young Steven, I enjoy your youthful enthusiasm as it reminds me of all the years I coached kids sports. Times I truly miss.

You are still young and a bit "wet behind the ears"  (I was much worse at your age), so my advise is to just pass by the remarks without comment, but do use it to learn from. . .

+1. Very well said.

The only thing I would add is that bullying is an ugly activity, regardless of the venue.

Therefore, as Sheriff Steven has been known to link to a music video, I’ve taken it upon myself to wave my trusty Whitworth Adjustable Spanner and 3 ½ pound dumpy hammer, in the general direction of the jukebox and see what happens!!!!

So, anyway..... It looks like the page number thing, you know what happens after page 5? has gone away.

It has been replaced by other issues on here, for me anyway.  Logging into the archives is a constant challange, usually taking 2 or 3 tries,

but hey!!!  Life is good. Smile, Wink & Grin

Howdy diners,

Galaxy, the diner is open to discussion of anything as long as it's not in violation of the forum rules, I am not advertising, preaching, or endorsing a political candidate so I'm in the clear as far as I can tell, after all this is a "diner" so we need a "jukebox", please I encourage everyone to drop a "quarter" (or two, or more) into the "jukebox" and play one or two of your favorites. As for the car thing I gotta drive here somehow, might as well go in style! Laugh

Stephen NWPSWP,

<snip>

This thread {the diner} GOT SO OUT OF HAND BEFORE YOU CAME ALONG, THAT MR. OTTE was strictly and Permenantly installed to moderate it daily to be sure it stayed in a good realm of a pleasureable place for all to come.

<snip>

IT IS NOT UP TO YOU to DICTATE HOW THIS FORUM IS RUN. THAT is MR. OTTE'S job.

Neither, Galaxy, is it yours.

The rest of the Forum is required to stay on the topic of model railroading, but there is no such restriction here in the Diner. As long as it doesn't break the Forum rules, it's allowed here, as long as it's stated in a civil manner.

This latter rule, YOU have violated.

The Diner belongs to its patrons. Everyone who comes in changes it in some way. To expect it to always stay exactly the same as it was when you first started posting is naïve and impractical. I'm very sorry if recent changes have rubbed you the wrong way, but that's life. I wouldn't normally be so harsh, but you've established that precedent with your own post to NWP SWP, so I'll be as blunt to you as you were to him:

Get over it or get out.

Now, let's have some music.

P.S.:

Once, just once, I would love to be able to take a couple days off from work and NOT come back to a huge Forum blow-up. Seriously.

I don't think Jeffrey would like the arguing ... His rule was "Don't tick people off." or something like that.

The Diner is dedicated to Jeffrey .... So don't argue and don't tick people off.

Even though off-topic is permitted, I prefer to include some model railroading in each post ....

MLC .... Your crossing signal looks great.

I'm still running the Empire Builder. ... I'm using GP7 helpers for a grade. Only one E7 is powered, and the trailing E7 is a dummy. A single E7 will stall on the grade without helpers if pulling the dummy and the 10-car train. . ..

Normally, I don't use the GN E7's on the Empire Builder, but use them on shorter local trains. ... Usually, I pull the EB with two powered CB&Q E-units or with 3 or 4 GN F-units.

Afternoon diners,

Not much going on today, not going to the MRR club tonight because two cars are in the shop, and I've got a headache.

Glad Mr. Otte says music is OK, the world would be quite dull without it.

Nothing MRR wise to report, I do have a decent income coming in now that will allow me to work on some train projects.

Now for some musicWhistling

Looking good Garry

I did not think my signals were half bad considering they were my first scratch build attempt. I did have to clean up the soldering a bit as my skills have changed. Just adding signs and repainting them spruced them up considerably. I had them on my 4x8 layout when I was in highschool.

Brass tubing, brass rod. washers and brass tube made up the flasher heads.

Work wasn't too bad. Cleaned out some old PCs from an office. 1992 called and wanted their PCs back.
