pest control problems during layout storage?

I live in northern CA and am getting ready to put my layout away for the summer (it gets to hot in the garage for playing with the trains)It is stored hanging from the ceiling under a plastic dust cover. My problem is that when I dropped it down after storage last year I found evidence of visits by rodents, nothing major but you could tell they had been on it. This year however I have added lots of new bush's and trees etc that I think will be attractive to the critters.
Does any one have any ideas of what I could put on the layout to keep the pests away. I have heard about the dryer sheets for the bugs but havn't heard of any thing for mice etc.
Any advice or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bob R.

Build a frame for your layout and cover it with aluminum screening, this should due it, the mice will sure miss living in their summer home though.

A few open boxes of mothballs placed around the layout will keep all sorts of vermin away including mice, squirriles, chipmunks and bats.
But a couple of warnings....
1. Your garage is gonna smell like mothballs.
2. It is violation of Federal laws and possibly some state laws to use mothballs(napthalene) to control such beasties.
Now isn't our government looking out after us...we can put the stuff on our clothes and wear them but we can't repell layout eating vermin with it....Take Care and Have Fun....Vic

I just cound not resist this,
make sure that aall of the doors and windows on the buildings on your network are closed and locked. ?The other ideas seem to be good to me too.

I would do some research befor using mothballs, the fumes and if they come in contact with certain plastic and foam products will melt or distort them. Go to your local pest control store maybe they can help you. A few years ago my neighbor went on vacation and someone told them to put mothballs around their house, they did and a few under their refrigerator the fan sent the fumes into the frig. needless to say they had to throw out all the food in the freezer and frig. and the frig. also your layout will smell forever.
Good Luck

I was talking to a friend about your problem and then I remembered my daughter owns a cabin on a lake and they always had a problem with mice, last year she bought 4 of the electric pest repellers at Target and when they went to the cabin 4 months later there was no sign of mice and she has not had a problem since, so for $25.00 you might try this in your garage.

As per the writing on the box it repells mice, rats, roaches, spiders and other insects, Target stores have it on sale this week for $24.99, try it if it don't work for you refund it.

But the package also says that curtians, furnature, and walls limit the efectivness of these things. If Bob were to use one of these, I would probably put one on or above the hanging layout and run an extention cord up to it. I do have four of these in my house and they do work OK, But the best effect was most likely tested in a room with no carpet, furnature, or anything else that would absorb the sound waves.........Jamie

That shouldnt be a problem for me then. I have a 68' x 16' layout with no walls in between and no carpeting nor anykind of curtains or drapes.
Wonder how much of an area these things cover. I want to be pest free from the bottom of the table to the top of the layout. Nothing more annoying than to crawl under a table to fix something, and there is big black and ugly staring you in the face sitting in his webhome!
